Celebrating Ukrainian New Year’s, Malanka was held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on January 13. A lavish Ukrainian meal, a selection of festive Ukrainian dances, and a live and silent auction were held at the event. “We were so excited to see everyone perform,” said instructor, Elizabeth Zee. According to Jason Stelmaschuk, Ukrainian Cultural Association presi-

dent, the Samotsvit dancers shared s o m e n e w i d e a s t h i s y e a r. Fr o m toddlers to adults, full energy and colour ful costumes filled the stage; even a sword dance was performed. “We are extremely grateful for the community support from families and busines ses in the area; it is what keeps Malanka growing stronger each year,” said Stelmaschuk. will be doing strategic planning from the end of January to early in the beginning of February so they can better articulate to residents what the next four years will look like. “I would like to let residents know that we are beginning to explore the opportunity of bringing Senior Level 4 housing to Vermilion,” said McAuley. She went on to say that council is in the early stages of working with Alberta Health Services and MLA Dr. Richard Starke, to gather statistics and match what the need is to what the service could look like. According to McAuley, the Town of Vermilion will be placing a stronger focus on industrial and retail economic development going into 2018. As a result, they will be sending a member of council to the International Shopping Conference in Whistler, British Columbia. The Mayor is also thrilled with how well the New Commercial Retail Development Incentive Program has been going. Expecting more businesses in the future, along with the four previously approved for the program, McAuley said, “I see good things for our downtown; by the summer, th Vermilion is going to look very different. We are also very grateful to a community resident who has donated $50,000 to support the program.” McAuley went on to say that what is

nesses to find out how things are going and if there are any niche businesses that we could bring in to benefit them. This will be a tougher financial year for us, but bringing in new businesses will help cover the cost of the development of land. I think overall we are heading into an exciting year! Making Your Resume Shine

Best-Selling Author, Sheila Musgrove, delivered a presentation to assist audience members with making their resumes shine at the Alumni Theatre in Vermilion on January 10. In her best-selling book, “Hired! How To Get The Zippy Gig,” she sourced the Financial Post’s Peter Harris who in September of 2016, said, “Eighty per cent of resumes are rejected within 11 seconds.” To help people get more than 11 seconds, Musgrove wrote the book describing how to create a winning, shiny resume to have an applicant’s phone ring off the hook. Her two-step resume formula covers a person’s key successes and highlights their results for future employers.

“The biggest mistake people make with resumes is filling them with bullets describing functional responsibilities,” said Sheila Musgrove. She suggests only using bullets to list key successes, versus a long list of personal attributes or job description points. The model in her book encourages people to describe succinctly what their previous role was by answering what level they reported to, what their job was, and what their scope was. The model also encourages readers to describe how well they did their previous job, by answering how big, how much, and how many about some of their key successes. “Numbers and percentages are powerful,” said Musgrove.

H e r e’s w i s h i n g that ever yone is having a happy new year thus far, I am still fighting off this mutated flu good days and others not so good, it’s a bug that likes to hang around I am thinking, know of some that had it for three weeks to a month now. H owever I only allow it to slow me down just a lit tle bit, and with the new little bundle of joy... my pup Miss Teek, I can’t afford to be lying around, and let me tell you she is a hand full and always on the go. That first week after Christmas, of course, she had to sleep in the house, sleep was something she got to enjoy as I was up every two hours taking her outside to relieve herself, something that didn’t help my flu all that much. But her little smiley face always made me feel better regardless what time of the night it was, no matter how badly I felt she was never a regret, and a couple of energetic puppy kisses always fixed everything. She has changed personalit y in leaps and bounds, a very energetic, adventurous and smar t puppy now with all the makings of an excellent lead dog, which I am already training her for in just small fun activities. She can already outrun me at only nine weeks, so she is going to be an outstanding runner, I slowly introduced her to the other adult pups which she now tries to keep up with, so I have to watch her every move, so even doing even small chores take forever. I have her sleeping in the shop now where she has two huge beds, one

A winter weekend is a perfect time to warm the house by cooking up a roast complete with Yorkshire pudding. As the name implies, Yorkshire pudding is a British dish that is traditionally served with roast beef. It is special puffed bread, that later collapses, with an indent in the center. Gravy would be poured in the hollow of the Yorkshire pudding. Yorkshire pudding and gravy is used as a dinner course the proceeds the meat and vegetable course. In Canada, we eat it along with the roast beef dinner. The use of milk as the liquid yields a softer Yorkshire pudding favored in the south

of England and using water delivers a crisper product, more desired in the north of England. You can also use a mixture of 1 cup milk and one-half cup of water, mixed together for the liquid. A secret to success is pouring the batter into a very hot, preheated muffin tin. The second secret is to never open the oven at all to peek while it is cooking, as the puffing will fall and the results will be disappointing. If you must look, then turn on the oven light and peek through the window, to check the color. Also, you will have better luck, with the Yorkshire pudding turning golden brown when it is cooked on the top rack on the oven, making sure you do have enough room for the large steam rise that will be happening. You will be amazed at how easy this

4 eggs 1 1/2 cups milk 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/4 cups flour 12 teaspoons of oil or fat or drippings Into a blender add first the eggs and milk, add the salt and flour and blend until smooth. Allow the mixture to set for 30 minutes or longer. Into muffin tins add 1 teaspoon of oil or fat into each of the 12 muffin tins, greasing the sides and bottom of the tins. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and cook muffin tins, with only the fat/oil in them, for 5 minutes, until the oil and the tins are very hot. Pour the batter in the tins, 2/3 full, and it will make hissing and sizzling sounds. Bake at 425 degrees for approximately 20 minutes or until the Yorkshire pudding is golden brown. Yield: 12

A 100 Years, Still Under The In’flu’ence

Well the New Year 2018 didn’t ring in with the best kick off for yours truly back on Day 1 as it was spent entirely flummoxed with the flu, not just for the first time of this winter but times two. It is not exactly a count of import that anyone strives to achieve; I just don’t remember ever getting it more than once before in a year. And I’m not about to get into the debate about anti-vaxxers or such things, because I’ve been firmly employed in the healthcare side of the economy for a long time and lean toward the side of best efforts and intentions to the right outcome there. I’m just thinking this winter’s edition of the flu shot I got back in November was less probable from a “You shouldn’t get it” lot and more likely from a uniquely created “Jim’s try out all flus” special edition produced just for

me. I jest of course in my case this time obviously…though 20 years ago a rather nasty variant of it managed to plant me in the hospital for a couple days and I could gladly do without making acquaintance with that experience ever again. Yes, the flu is hardly something to jest about and this month just happens to be the 100 year anniversary of the recognized beginning of 1918 flu pandemic. Morrison library. One of the 3 Victoria Crosses awarded during WW1 to a

Canadian aviator was to a pilot named Alan MacLeod, who with his observer Arthur Hammond, fought off 9 Fokker Triplanes from their observation plane destroying 4 of them. During the epic fight their fuel tank was hit and both of them were wounded multiple times, and as the aircraft was on fire Alan piloted the craft down to the ground while standing outside the cockpit on the wing to avoid the flames, and then on the ground dragging his wounded observer to safety under heavy fire. Hard to believe Alan managed to live through that incredible ordeal…and yet within a few short months on coming back to recuperate from his wounds at his home in Manitoba was taken instead by “The Spanish Influenza” on November 6,1918, only 5 days before the end of the war. He is unique in being the only Canadian VC winner under active service to be buried in Canada. He was not yet 20 years old. At the time…the flu was taking the young, the strong, the healthy, and even the brave too.

Cow-Calfenomics 2017/2018 is coming to a community near you in January 2018. “This year we have again, put together a well rounded agenda with interesting speakers and topics on farm business management in the Alberta cow-calf business,” says Rick Dehod, farm financial specialist, Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF). This year’s presentations and presenters are: Ann Wasko, market analyst from Gateway Livestock will speak on the cattle market situation and outlook. Ann brings her insight in to the Beef markets and what the market outlook could be going forward. Brenda Hagen, project coordinator for the Western Livestock Price Insurance program, will explain the use of risk management tools in the beef industry. She will outline the various tools available to protect your profit, and how different tools will work in different market situations. Joel Bokenfohr, AF, will speak on business structures for new entrants. Anyone who is entering in to the business will find this beneficial. Joel will review what business structure could allow you to retain your profit and grow your business. Herman Simons, AF, will speak on production enterprise analysis, Herman reminds us that most farms have numerous enterprises, but often we don’t know which one makes money and which one loses.

Often we keep doing what we have been doing when good enterprise analysis will give you the information to make changes that will increase the profitability of your whole farm with the same resources. Rick Dehod, AF, will speak on a farmer’s guide to agricultural credit. Agriculture is a capital intensive business, and debt is a tool to enhance the opportunity for profit. But like any tool you have to understand its use and features to get full benefit for your farm. There is a lot to consider when taking on debt, and the cost, interest rate, is not the only thing to consider before you sign on the dotted line ML Manglai, AF, will review the AF AgriProfit$ Beef program and how this tool provides information that can be used as a benchmark for your own operation. A Canadian Cattlemen Young Leader participant will reflect on the value of having a mentor . The Young Leadership program includes mentorship and is important to the program’s success. “It’s a full day, with a lot of great information, that any farm manager can utilize and incorporate into their farm management tool box, wherever they are in their careers,” says Dehod. Happy New Year from the students and staff of St. Jerome’s. We hope everyone had a family filled, refreshing Christmas holidays. Students were excited to see each other and share their holiday highlights with each other. Many classes did a variety of activities to ring in the New Year. “2018” party hats decorated, New Year toasts written, games played and celebrations enjoyed. The Grade 3 students began learning about the country of Peru and some of their unique New Year traditions; money in shoes, eating twelve grapes and wearing yellow underpants. On Tuesday we gathered with commu-

nity members at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church for our monthly mass. Father Roger shared with the students that Jesus taught with authority because he is who the scripture is talking about. Christ is fully God and fully human. Thank you to all the students who sang in the choir and helped with the liturgy. A huge thank you to our wonderful custodians, Ernie and Dorothy Decker. The school looked amazingly shining and fresh after the holidays. Your hard work is very appreciated. Thank you to Mrs. MacMillan for the amazing job she does of our Facebook page. Our daily breakfast program that we offer free to every student each morning, has successfully switched from three days a week to five days a week this year due to the generous donations we have received in our first four months. We are continually receiving donations of food, supplies, and money from our school family and community. We are very thankful. Our $200 or more donors since September, 2017 include: Vermilion Rotary Club - $1000, Midwest Mobile Patrols and Services $750, Dustin and Carissa Farkash - $250, and the Vermilion Legion - $20. We thank everyone for supporting our program. Back in November, VIBE held their annual Pink Shirt Design Logo Contest. They had 30 entries from VES students. Our VES winner was Jordyn Pottle. All of

Horticulture On The Horizon

Jason Andersen from Kathy’s Greenhouse will be one of four Alberta horticulturists in attendance at IPM Essen 2018, the world’s largest Horticultural Trade show in Essen, Germany from January 23 – 26. Andersen along with Nadine Stielow from Thiel’s Greenhouses Ltd. in Bruderheim, Carmen Sim from Country Gardens and Greenhouse began their adventure by boarding an airplane to Amsterdam on January 11. They intend to meet up with Christie Pollack from Christie’s Gardens and Greenhouses Ltd. while in Europe. The group feels privileged to take part in the trade show as only 55 people from North America receive invitations from Ball Horticulture to attend the IPM Essen 2018. All of the Alberta horticulturists decided to make the most of their trip by leaving ten days early to tour some state of the art facilities in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. The hope for these tours is to possibly implement newer techniques and

technologies into their operations back home in Alberta. “As members of the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association, our goal with this trip is to share information with other members. We’ve opened up some fantastic industry contacts, and we hope to see some emerging plants that may be available in 2019,” said Andersen. A tour will be held at the BioBest insectory in Belgium. According to Andersen; the four group members order weekly shipments of beneficial insects used for insect control throughout their growing seasons from BioBest. One of their ten days will be spent at The World Horti Center in Naaldwijk, Holland. This centre opened in September of 2017 and is an international centre for greenhouse horticulture innovation. During the IPM Essen 2018 Trade Show, the group of four are excited to meet with Floral Daily-a worldwide industry newsletter to have a story written about them. Horticulture is an industry that affects

everyone from flower beds around town to farming to the food industry; it is all around us. The four horticulturists are very involved and passionate about this industry and get great pleasure in seeing things grow. “There is a lot of satisfaction in growing a plant; seeing it thrive and the joy a product can give to people. Everyone can appre-

ciate horticulture themselves whether they work with it or admire the work of others,” said Andersen. Andersen would like to invite readers to follow their journey by searching ‘Kathy’s Greenhouse’ on Facebook or Twitter and asks followers to post questions along the way.

When formed in 1998, The Mannville Historical Society had 15 members with the objective of preserving the Mannville Historical Telephone Museum which was the society’s first museum. The museum

is housed in the original telephone office that opened in Mannville in December 1917 with a Northern Electric switchboard. The telephone office closed in 1965 and became the local library for many years until the Mannville Historical Society converted it into the museum. The society also takes care of the Mannville Crossroads Museum which started off as a country school until 1958 when it was turned into the Ukrainian Catholic Church. In 2008 the Mannville Historical Society purchased it and turned it into a museum.

The United Conservative Party will be hosting and Annual General Meeting on February 8, at the Vermilion Public Librar y to select permanent board members for the constituency. Registration will begin at 7 p.m. in the Library basement with the meeting starting at 7:30 p.m. The par ty will be filling 20 board spaces, and in preparation for the new constituency boundaries has invited members from the Battle River Wain-

wright Constituency. According to Rowswell, the ideal board will have members who represent the land area of the constituency and reflect both legacy parties(former Wildrose and PC). His hope is for people belonging to or in support of both legacy parties to feel welcome and comfortable in coming. The AGM will allow the party to gain administrative direction, and in May, board members will attend a policy convention with details released for building on policy and how to run a

nomination.
