On December 12, a bus load of local men pulled up at Craig’s Department Store in Vermilion to thank John and Doug Stewart for their many years of service. O r i g i n a l d r i ve r, A r n o l d U s e n i k ,
returned to help recreate a similar event that took place in 1982, and Doug Stewart came to greet the gentlemen. According to par ticipants, the original trip had stemmed from hearing concerns that a group of ladies had taken a bus to Edmonton to Christmas Shop. While having their Christmas
coffee party at The Brunswick, a group of men decided to respond by adventuring a mere two blocks away by bus for a Christmas shopping extravaganza at Craig’s Department Store. Some original group members and many of the next generation attended the second trip from Nicks Restaurant,
and all enjoyed reminiscing their many special memories of Craig’s. The men exchanged stories and checked out areas of the store they hadn’t seen in several years. “The bus boys would like to thank John and Doug Stewart for their hospitality,” said Gary Moses.

Bird enthusiasts gathered around Vermilion for the Christmas Bird Count on December 16. Chris Olsen, Lakeland College’s Program Head/Instructor of Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation led a group through the Southeast quadrant of a 24 - kilometer circle surrounding Vermilion. Olsen has been attending since 1992, and the count has been held in Vermilion since the 1980’s. Compared to temperatures dropping below -30 C last year, the Christmas Bird Count was considerablymilder this year
with an actual temperature of -4 C, and an approximate 30 kilometer wind making it feel like -10 C. However beautiful the birds, scenery, and sunrise were, walking the tree lines participants felt every bit of the frosty winter wind. “The wind was unhelpful, but participants were able to hear a territorial Blackcapped Chickadee song, and saw Chickadees, Common Redpolls, Magpies, and a Ruck Pigeon all at their first stop. Throughout the day, remarkable sightings included a Northern Shrike, a Northern Flicker, a Snowy Owl, and a couple of Great Horned Owls,” said Olsen.

Thousands of Christmas Bird Counts are held across North America dating back over 100 years. Originally Christmas bird hunts were common until Ornithologist, Frank Chapman, began the practice more friendly to bird science; with results now being compiled over large areas. Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation graduates, Alyssa Metro and Caleb Corcoran, returned for another year of spotting a variety of bird species. “I like the outdoors, wildlife, and being able to give back to the environment; making sure it is there for future generations. I really enjoyed an ornithology class, and the Christmas Bird Count seemed like

a really good opportunity to get out and learn more,” said second year Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation student, Blaine Olfert. Jan Scott hosted a potluck for all participants, and numbers were tallied by Iris Davies. For results, you can see next week’s issue of the Vermilion Voice.

Matt Patershuk Swoons Vermilion Folk Club

M at t Pater shuk ’s voice had just enough grit and tenderness to put listeners at ease when he was hosted by the Vermilion Folk Club on December 16, at the Elk’s Hall. The Straight Arrows were a perfect compliment, accompanying him with talented solos and a similar ease of ability. According to the roots artist, his new album, ‘Same As I Have Ever Been,’ is packed with a fitting compilation of country, blues, R & B, and Celtic creations. A f t e r l o s i n g h i s s i s t e r, C l a r e Patershuk, to a drunk driver a few years ago, Patershuk feels he is a changed person but appreciates having found the things about himself that are fundamentally the same.
“I think writing is a way to figure things out and performing brings unbridled joy; so it’s kind of like two sides of the same coin. The title track, written to my daughters, expresses that we all go through changes and get knocked off balance, but hopefully, we have a center nature that we can return to,” said Patershuk who feels that he is getting closer to his. According to Patershuk, he had avoided performing before his 30’s due to stage fright, but his genuine interludes and stylish performance left no evidence of this. Originality, truth, and sarcasm are all portrayed in his lyrics and were easily related to by the crowd. “Matt Patershuk is an amazing talent! We would like to thank the Alber ta Foundation for the Arts because they make live music happen in Alberta,” said Rod MacMillan.

Tim Hortons Donates To KidSport

On December 14, Tim Hortons Owner Greg Whitney donated $2016, the proceeds from the Smile Cookie campaign, to Vermilion KidSport. KidSport is a non-profit organization which helps support children and families who do not have the financial means to participate in sports. The organization helps pay registration fees for a variety of different sporting activities along with occasionally
helping to supply equipment when needed. Vermilion KidSport has helped approximately 35 local children this past year. “We have been doing the Smile Cookie Campaign for about six years now here in Vermilion, with the donations going mainly to KidSport. I would like to thank the community for their support this year and in previous years, “ said Whitney. It’s a great program, and we plan to continue with KidSport in the future.

Well, here we are down to the crunch. Christmas day is a week away, and my Christmas spirit hasn’t made an appearance yet. I am usually bubbling over with joy and excitement during this time of year, but so far it has eluded me. Maybe, it’s because I have had so much on the go and many things on my mind that the left prefrontal cortex of my brain has shut itself down, while the right prefrontal cortex of my brain has been in overdrive. Or maybe I am just becoming a humbug because my children are all grown, and that sense of excitement isn’t there like it once was.

I also wonder if it is because of how much earlier the Christmas season is starting each year. A lot of Christmas craft shows are held in November, the Christmas parade was at the end of November, and the Stores are placing Christmas items right after Remembrance Day, I think Christmas is getting beat to death long before it should be. I remember a time when the Christmas season didn’t kick in until at least the first week of December. Maybe it is a combination of all, but I am not going to let it ruin my Christmas, no way, no how!! I am just going to have to do things that will bring my Christmas spirit back to the way it has always been, and that’s that! So what will I do to get myself out of this funk? I’m going to start playing Christmas music. I’m going to go out for a drive and
look at the Christmas lights. I’m going to go wanting to get. You truly are the best! shopping (which I haven’t even started yet, Remember there could be many yikes!), and I am going to watch all the community members struggling hustle and bustle of last minute shopfor whatever reason during ping. Vegreville Pole Kats Head To Special Olympics

The Vegreville Pole Kats Special Olympics Floor Hockey Team won Regional’s in November, qualifying them to compete in the Winter Special Olympics in Calgary in 2018. The Regional’s took place at Edmonton Northland where three games were played, one against Edmonton and two against Olds. The scores were 6-1 against Edmonton, 12-4 and 10-4 against Olds with the Pole Kats the victor in all games.

As the night slips away into the dawn of a new day, the boys lie flat out on their beds. The bunkhouse was still, except for the spill, of noises from out of their heads. Between those loud snores and the dull groaning roars, the mice attempted to creep, In search of flakes from Christmas fruit cakes, while the cowhands were fast asleep.
Of the 11 members of the team, two members from Vermilion include David Rein and Justin Wolgien. According to Rein there is no swearing, checking or hitting in Special Olympics Floor Hockey. “I find the best thing about this sport is the sportsmanship,” said Rein. The team is currently seeking donations to help them with the expense of heading to the Olympics in Calgary. Anyone interested in donating may contact David Rein at 780-581-4029.

Gene baked the spuds, Roy spilled gravy on his duds, and Doc showed up sporting a Santas cap. Corn was a-poppin’, Hoppy started hoppin’, when hot apple cider spilled on his lap. Homemade ice cream, churned in a wooden machine, was a final touch to

Through the door he did creep and without ne’er a peep, went straight to work not waking a soul. He placed presents under the tree,

Well howdy, folks, guess who is back, truly missed you all, an d wa s to l d I wa s even missed by a few d e d i c ate d r e a d e r s , and a recent discussion with a youthful, spirited elder who told me the column was a weekly highlight in her weekly routine, and she missed it dearly. Basically, I was told to get my butt in gear and get the column back in so she could get updated on the adventures with the puppy chronicles, so how could I say anything but...Yes Ma’am, and so respectively here I am back at my two finger typing on a keyboard. A lot has happened in the last couple months, as well as adventures and a change in my life and lifestyle, as many of you know I retired after 38 years with DND, the Department of National Defence as a civil servant. It wasn’t my intention to slack off with this column, but while working in my free time I had access to my workstation and computer, where I could quickly type and pass on the column, my home computers were set up a little differently. Our home computer was/is a laptop style computer which I find difficult to type on and maneuver; I do have a standard computer in my shop, in fact, a couple of them, one of which I was going to dedicate just for this column. Now I know just enough about electronics and computers to get myself in

a real mess at times, hence the huge delay with the column, we do have the most advanced WIFI satellite dish for the internet, but didn’t have the shop connected due to all the internet complications that could harm my business computers. I did tr y my darnedest to get one computer hooked up, but it just so happened I tried to do this during one of our worst wind storms in recent history, with winds that blew rail cars of the rail trestle on the Battle River. Which also unknown to me also blew our internet provider main tower over in two pieces leaving our entire midwest area without internet, to make a long story short that resulted in me messing up all our computers and pulling out what hair I have left. So with my apologies, I am back if you will have me, still haven’t got things worked out with normal computers and am doing my best writing this on a small laptop, now with all that computer mumbo jumbo aside, on with the adventures. During that entire time, I was missing in action an entire hunting season passed, bow hunting season was very adventurous but believe it or not one of my shortest in 40 years, which now being retired...something’s not right there. And you want to know why?...believe it or not it was because I was so dang busy. Now I’m going to blame that not on my patient wife, and her “honey do” list but on the kids...the furbaby kids that is, and in truth, it’s not their fault,
just wanted stuff done before freeze up and snow. I have expanded the kennels and putting a new roof on the kennel extension side of the barn; I planned to install metal roofing, made the mistake of removing old wooden shingles, which resulted in removing old roofing, then trusses and so on. So by the time I was done I almost rebuild the entire extension side of the barn, but all got done with a brand new roof, including inside deluxe housing for the furbabies, which if am still working on every day. All the pups are doing well and love having me home all day to cater to their every need, I can’t believe how busy that keeps me, but truth be known I love being with them every day, and it has made us very close as a family. I attempted to hook up the sled team in November but was leery to during hunting season as we looked like a pack of wolves on the prowl, so I was patiently waiting until December, now with all the warmer weather we have no snow. But I am sure that will come, and we will have plenty of time, the pups Sir Mukluk and Miss Noel look all grown up now, even still pups at heart, but are a big part of my pride and joy for sure. Mis s O ohohh c ame into season in September, and I was hoping for a huge bundle of Christmas puppy’s but Sir Mukluk, our planned Sire, was still too young unfortunately so I was a little sad and disappointed as I looked so forward to a litter of furball puppies.

Although I enjoy spending my retirement every day with my team, I think my wife Roxanne could sense I missed out on something I was looking so forward too, so guess what my loving wife went and did. On December 23, I am driving to Saskatoon to pick up my Christmas present; a little furry, bundle of joy, an eight-week-old red colour female puppy; a beautiful rarer colored Alaskan Malamute will be a new addition to the family, she is beyond beautiful, and I am thrilled and so thankful. We haven’t seen her in person yet, but have lots of pictures and get a daily description of her antics already; she is, of course, a little bit of a mystery to us on her personality. So I had to come up with a perfect name for her...which is “Teek” and of course, we will call her “Miss Teek”...which will be pronounced... “Mystique”...I love it and am smiling ear to ear as I write this. Well folks, not much on an adventure this time, more of just an update and to let you know I didn’t abandon you, but stay tuned as the adventures will be many and I have lots to share, take care and enjoy the season.
When The Smoke Clears Truth be known I most likely missed passing on the adventures to you than you missed me, so thank you for understanding, reading and sharing my life adventures.

Pineapple delight is a common Christmas dessert in the prairies. This is in part due to its contribution to many local fundraising cookbooks in the rural areas. It consists of a graham wafer base, a filling, and a topping. This recipe has a flapper pie type filling, with 2 tablespoons of sugar instead of 2 cups of icing sugar. The star of the show is the pineapple, blended into creamy whipped cream. Pineapple has many health benefits. It aids in collagen synthesis, helping our skin to be firmer and more elastic. Pineapple Delight
apple contains fiber and the natural digestive enzyme bromelain, which helps us to digest food better and to get more nutrition from our food. The bromelain found in pineapple also helps to fight cellular inflammation in our body. Pineapple is high in vitamin C, manganese, trace minerals and antioxidants, contributing to the health of our immune system, bones, eyes, and digestion. If you are allergic to dairy, coconut milk and cream can be substituted. If you want all the benefits the bromelain found in pineapple, you will have to use fresh pineapple instead of the canned, as the canning process virtually destroys all of the beneficial bromelain. The bromelain enzyme is so active in fresh pineapple that you cannot make a pineapple gelatin dessert with it, as
the gelatin will not set. If you are using fresh or frozen pineapple, be sure to remove as much liquid as possible from the pineapple before adding to the whipped cream. If you are cooking a turkey for Christmas, don’t forget to save the bones for an extremely healthful turkey stock for homemade soup. Pineapple Delight Base 1 1/2 cups graham wafer crumbs 1/4 cup melted butter 2 tablespoons sugar Filling 2 eggs 2 cups of milk 2 tablespoons of cornstarch 2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla Topping 2 cups whipping cream 1/4 cup sugar 1 can of crushed pineapple (well drained) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine the graham wafers, the melted butter, and the sugar. Press the mixture into the bottom of an 8 x 8 pan and bake for 12 minutes. In a heavy-bottomed pot whisk together 2 cups of cold milk, the cornstarch, sugar, and vanilla. Cook over med/low heat, stirring until the mixture thickens. Pour the thickened mixture over the graham crust and chill. In a bowl combine the whipping cream, and sugar and whip until thick. Fold in the drained crushed pineapple. Chill overnight. To serve, cut into squares.

No…this isn’t going to be a treatise on a particular song of that name by that famous big band musician Glenn Miller, who happened to disappear in a small plane over the English Channel on the date I’m writing this back in 1944. You would not think someone who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s would be all that well versed on music from the swing era but WW2 documentaries and background music in WW2 fighter flight sims surprisingly helped fill in some of those blanks. One thing around December is that no matter what seems to be going on at home or the work front, outside forces and ‘tradition gravity’ gradually starts channelling thoughts, actions, time spent…and yes, mood… towards Christmas Day. I start picturing the Decem-

ber 1st event horizon being one of those pennies that gets dropped into those spiral coin donation funnels like you see at Dairy Queen, the closer you get to the big day the faster and tighter the spiralling gets as you get drawn down into that dizzying and frenzied state before conclusion. Lately it seems you catch the holiday music by ear earlier…maybe even subliminally or under your radar to not spook you too much that it is even there, and it is not even all that jarring anymore that some Christmas sales pop up before Halloween (August if you can believe it I saw Christmas lights on sale)…trying to widen that consumerism funnel side of the season a little longer and wider. Maybe it is just the internal thoughts about gifts, stockings, and all those ‘just one more thing off the list’ from the store runs before you really run out of time that they can’t help piggy back on it further. I suppose that ‘being played’ feeling is what puts a bit of a negative damper on the seasonal mood when you go to get one thing then get bogged down into the waiting queue ‘switchback shelves of death’, wall to wall full of knick-knacks just before the cash registers. Painful on the pocket book, and
certainly impulse control, but they are nothing if not effective, and effective is good for business. Yes, mood during the run up to the holidays is something you may have to manage like a marathon runner (I feel like I personally have to do it), not going out on a sprint too early and burning out before you get there to enjoy it. Let’s face it…for all the good cheer and good will generated that goes with the season it is not always enough to make it an easy time for everyone to get through. Those that have experienced loss in a job, a home, or a family member or are dealing with issues like divorce; the holidays can be a very difficult time for them to put a brave face on to enjoy it. Keep them in your thoughts and reach out if the opportunity is there. Now if it would just get a little bit cooler out so I could work on flooding my ice rink, I’ll help my own mood along by skipping all the Xmas tunes (however briefly) and think of P-51 Mustangs cruising blue skies and wispy winter cloud tops of December 1944 with ‘American Patrol’ by Glenn Miller on the radio in the background. It works for me.

Vermilion Chrysler Supporting Wellness and Men’s Health

Vermilion Chrysler raised $425 to fund a project for the Vermilion Wellness Coalition with the presentation made on December 15. The Beef on a Bun fundraiser was held on November 28 – 29, and patrons were entered into a draw for a Vehicle Detail Package valued at $475; with John Wilhelm winning the package. An organization that provides activities for people of all ages, the Vermilion Wellness Coalition was grateful for their contribution. Possible activities that may receive the assistance include bowling, ice or floor curling, the cooking club, or birdhouse building.

“We would like to thank Vermilion Chrysler for being so innovative and contributing to the Wellness Coalition which supports several wellness activities,” said Russ Cameron, member of the Vermilion Wellness Coalition. O n D e c e m b e r 14 , V e r m i l i o n Outreac h Sc hool gathered at the ATCO Gas warehouse to help Santa’s Anonymous volunteers package up the Christmas hampers which were delivered on December 16. The Vermilion Outreach School has been volunteering with Santa’s Anonymous for over 14 years. Every year many volunteers work hard to divide the donations to ensure that many families get help with
what they need for the holiday season. Dolores Coates-Lingley, Head Elf for Santa’s Anonymous the last 22 years says that the reason she remains involved is “The Spirit of Christmas.” “Some families don’t have things, and this is one way we can help them have a better Christmas,” said CoatesLingley. Santa’s Anonymous is a community-wide program organized by the Vermilion Lions Club which helps families in need throughout the Christmas
season, ensuring every applicant’s child has a gift to open on Christmas morning. Due to the generosity of the community, many donations of food and toys were dropped off since the middle of November.
The total number of hampers distributed this year was 54 reaching 169 people, 77 of them children. The families who received the hampers are in Vermilion, Mannville, Minburn, Islay, and Clandonald.

Christmas—that wonderful time of year where people gather together to wish each other well and look forward to the hope of the New Year. As Canadians we are incredibly blessed to live in this beautiful country. Our freedoms and opportunities are the precious gifts that were given to us through the selfless sacrifice of our veterans and those in uniform. During this season of giving we should always remain thankful to those who fought to secure our nation and continue to stand on guard for all of us. Modern communication allows us to know what is happening around the world or down the street at a moment’s notice. While we are richly blessed as a nation, there are many in our community who find themselves in a ver y difficult position this Christmas. We have the ability to step through our front door to donate or serve others throughout

this holiday season. We can make a difference to those less fortunate, to those who are hurting from the loss of loved ones, to show compassion and caring to those around us. It does not take a full bank account to let someone know that you care about them – it can be as simple as a phone call or a smile as you meet someone on the street. The Spirit of Christmas challenges us to serve more, care more, and love more. In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul wrote: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Eph 4:2 NIV). Words, centuries old, that hold hope and truth even today. This Christmas Alison and I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and may 2018 be all that you could hope for and more.

Fill The Cruiser
Olivier Mercier has been a Peace Officer for the County of Vermilion River since September and is also a firefighter for the County of Vermilion River. Mercier patrols the Village of Kitscoty, Marwayne, Paradise Valley and Dewberry. Orginally Mercier hailed from Quebec and previously worked in High Level as a Peace Officer before moving to the community. It was Mercier’s idea to do a food drive for the community and so went
with the idea to “Fill The Cruiser” but he did have the help of all those with him that day plus many others from the RCMP and many businesses were supportive as well. As people dropped off their bags of food, they were offered a chance to be entered for a $50.00 Tim Hortons gift card and were also thanked and wished a Merry Christmas. The Cruiser was full and so were four shopping carts which will be dropped off at the Vermilion Food Bank on December 18.
Santa stopped by and helped support “Fill The Cruiser” with a food donation.

Wow! What an amazing Christmas Concert the elementar y students performed on Thursday, December 14. The kindergarten started the concert singing two songs, Blitzen’s Boogie and Oh What a Glorious Night. They stole the show with their incredible cuteness. Then the Grade 1 to 5 students presented “Back To The Manger”. Congratulations to the Grade 5 actors for their spectacular performances. Thank you to Sonja Wilkinson for all the amazing props she created and to Francis Protsch for all the sewing she did for us this year. Finally, a thank you to all of our parents, grandparents and audience for filling up the theater and showing such tremendous support for our young performers! Celebrating the Five Days of Christmas has been a lot of fun and we are excited to finish off the week. Everyone was very sleepy on Monday, as many students showed up in the fuzziest and Christmassy PJs, as they participated in pajama day. Thank you to the High School Student Council for the delicious breakfast that they served the staff on Monday morning. We greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness and it was a wonder ful way to star t the week with terrific food and gathering as a staff. On Tuesday, it was BYOM Day for the High School students. Students brought their favourite mug to enjoy a cup of hot cocoa! Students also had a chance to decorate a sugar c o o k i e to e nj oy a s we ll. We d n e s d ay i s C h ar i t y D ay. A l l d o n at i o n s collected on this day will be sent to Sister Gloria, with the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Ervon, for their Peru Mission. On Thursday all students and staff are encouraged to wear Red and Green, Ugly Christmas Sweaters, or any festive gear to show their Christmas Spirit! The High School students will continue the Annual Christmas Tradition of exchanging “Warm Fuzzies”. Much joy and laughter is spread as students share Christmas greetings, hugs and strings of yarn with each other! Students will then share a Potluck Ethnic Lunch and a variety of activities throughout the afternoon. The Grade 6 class took their learnin g o n t h e road ver y ear ly o n t h e morning of Tuesday, December 12. They visited the Alberta Legislature and participated in a mock legislative assembly. After a tour of the building, they met their MLA, Dr. Richard Starke, and had some ver y intriguing questions for him. Starting on Wednesday, December 6, the students competitively hosted various events on different noon hours; Hanna DeVos, Grace Johnston, Brady Nelson, Sumiah Prill and Kody Westling earned the highest sales with their bake sale yielding $240.50. Other sales efforts at noon included pancake

The girls played a hard fought game but ended up running out of gas. “Our goal going into this tournament was for the girls to learn and be better coming out, which I think they did while having a lot of fun! Board members are involved in very important decisions about our school jurisdiction. Being able to visit our schools and better understand the physical layout as well as get a bit of a feel for the atmosphere is very helpful in their decision making process. The trustees appreciated the opportunity to engage with students and staff on December 6 when they visited VES. Our newest trustees also had a chance to visit, as they had never been here before. On December 8, report cards went home for the first third of the year. The next third of the school year ends on March 23, when the second set of report cards will go home.

For the past couple of weeks, VES has been fortunate enough to have six practicum students from Lakeland College working with our Educational Assistants. We would like to thank Haley Hendriks (Grade 5/6), Ethan Murray (Grade 2/6), Kiera Charlton (Grade 4), Lee-Anna Gibson (Grade 4/3), Vishnu Mohan (Grade 4/3) and Prabhjot Kaur (Grade 4/3) for choosing to do their practicum in VES. November was another exciting month! In partnership with the Vermilion Wellness Coalition, six VES students joined Cooking Club. The students enjoyed bringing a couple of guests to their final meal. Cooking Club will run again in the spring, so if you have an interested Grade 5 or 6 student, please stay tuned for more information. The Grade 6 VIBE Advisory is working on a Mindful Minute project. This month, they
had a special guest, Lorelee Marin, join them from Lloydminster. Lorelee works as a Health Promotion Facilitator and she spent time teaching the students about mindfulness. The students also had help from other VIBE Staff, Laryssa and Pat, as they helped the students to start picking out video script ideas. Throughout December, the students will tape short videos that they will later share with all of the VES classrooms to promote taking a ‘Mindful Minute’ sometime during the week. On December 13, Mr. Derek Young, the Director of Infrastructure and Planning Services, came to the Grade 4 classes to give a talk about waste management in the town of Vermilion. He talked about how the town will be using the green bins in 2019 for Organics. He explained why the new black bins are smaller; to encourage people to

recycle more. He also encouraged donating clothing to the Community Closet or the red diabetes bins. Grade 4 students all learned a lot about waste management in Vermilion. It is absolutely wonderful to have the outdoor skating area so close to our school. Several grades have been over to skate during their physical education classes. The heated building is such an asset in getting skates tied and giving students a chance to warm up a bit. Mike Bykowski of Bykowski Sand & Gravel was adamant his business is only “doing the right thing” as he steps up to extend his support with a $10,000 donation to the Living Well Capital Campaign. Thanks to Mike and Kelly for supporting this critical infrastructure in our community and for honouring our local seniors in this way! “ We saw the qualit y of care and support my parents received when they lived at the Lodge. But this upgrade to the building and rooms will enhance that home experience for our seniors into the future. Kelly and I are happy to offer our support to this long overdue moderniza-
tion,” said Bykowski. The Vermilion & District Housing Foundation (VDHF) is addressing this issue through their modernization project of the Vermilion Valley Lodge. The Vermilion Valley Lodge is critical infrastructure for the community by providing seniors with safe, affordable, and comfortable housing for those who can no longer manage in their own homes. Besides the modernizing of 50 resident rooms, the project will include a larger commercial kitchen and dining room, and other spaces to increase staff efficiency and comfort. Knights of Columbus Shopping Spree

The Knights of Columbus held their 13th Annual Shopping Spree in Vermilion at McDonald’s Family Foods on December 16. Volunteer, Bella Lane drew the winning raffle ticket on December 9. The winner of the raffle was Dylan Yungblut along with his wife Vanessa, and daughters Lily and Arya.
“Our winners have always reached $1,000 in the three-minute time limit. He plays hockey, so he’s in good shape, and will likely have no trouble,” said raffle coordinator, Larry Bingham. A hat-trick for Cory Clatworthy; two goals each for Kyler Anderson, Dan Webb, and Eric Fadden; as well as a goal each by Dallon Byrt, Dylan Yungblut, and Scott Roland compiled the two digit score. On December 13, the Vermilion Jr. B. Tigers met the Lloydminster Bandits in Dewberry and won 4 – 3. In the first period, Jesse Reeds scored with an assist from Jake McCormack. In the second period, Cody Jackson scored with assists from Austin Trach and Josh Eyben; while Brayden Wilson scored with an assist from Cody O’Hare. In Overtime,
Ryan VanGenderen scored with an assist from Maguire Blair. On December 15, the Jr. B. Tigers hosted Killam and fell short 6 – 3.
