With favourable weather conditions, spectators gathered on 50th Avenue to watch the street being lit up with glittering Christmas lights as the annual Night Light Parade passed by. Christmas elves merrily waved from this year’s floats, and Santa wished everyone a Merry Christmas at the finale. The Jr. B. Tigers once again held their hot dog fundraiser at the Atco building. The Jr. B. Hockey Team volunteered their time cooking approximately 235 hot dogs and serving hot chocolate with the proceeds going to support meals during their out of town games. Many children attended in hockey jerseys and enjoyed meeting the players. “We had a lot of people come out to buy hot chocolates and hot dogs; many leaving a donation and generally supporting the cause,” said Neil Zack. After enjoying the parade, families gath-
ered together at the Lakeland Mall to visit and shop. The Rotary Club offered hot chocolate and homemade cookies for donations to the Haying In The Thirties Cancer Support Group from November 24 - 26. “We were pleased with the turnout; we really appreciate the community’s support. Everyone is very giving in our town and are always willing to help support a good cause,” said Rotary member Janine Lange. Photos with Santa were available thanks to Dragon Hare Studios. These photos will be available at the Lakeland Mall from November 23 – 25. The Festival of Trees once again made an appearance at the Lakeland Mall. This Chamber of Commerce hosted event ran from November 23 – 25. Everyone who attended had the opportunity to bid on approximately 20 trees entered by businesses and non-profit organizations as Vermilion Chrysler elves Lance Adams, Wendy Stepanick, Linden Adams and Darren well as being able to vote for their favourite Skolarchuk help Santa find his way in the Nightlight Parade. Dewberry Arena Grand Opening

Approximately 200 people gathered at the Dewberry Arena on November 24, as the Dewberry Agricultural Society held their official Grand Opening. The day was full of events as a Dewberry Mustangs skills camp was held along with free skating, a silent and live auction, balloon pop, a ‘Fly Me Away’ raffle for a trip voucher, as well as a dance with the live band, the ‘Prairie Dogs.’ Speeches and a ribbon cutting ceremony were also an important part of the evening along with a banner presentation to the Dewberry, Marwayne, and Kitscoty Minor Hockey clubs all being awarded the Hockey Association of the Year by Hockey Alberta. Holly Holmen, Secretary-Treasurer and local project coordinator for the arena construction said, “With the arena completed, we would like to thank our community and neighbouring communities for the support.” Speaker s inc luded Relationship Manager from Vermilion ATB Financial Brett Flanders, Division 7 County Councillor Leslie Cusack, Dewberry Mayor Ken Haney, Vermilion-Lloydminster Inde-
pendent MLA Dr. Richard Starke, and Dewberry Ag Society President, Allan Parr. Several contractors involved in the build attended. According to Holmen, the community has been using the building for over a month, and have no vacant time slots on the schedule. “The opening of the new building has created enough excitement with players from 20 years ago back on the ice on a Mustang Alumni team,” said Holmen. The program opened with the singing of “O’Canada,” and followed by emcee, Holly Holmen, delivering various recognitions. Past Mayor, Headley Dennill presented her with a plaque representing the end of an era and the beginning of another. Relationship Manager from Vermilion ATB Financial Brett Flanders noted that the committee was one of the most organized and passionate groups that he has ever sat down with and said, “It goes to show how great this community is.” County of Vermilion River Division 7 Councillor Leslie Cusack thanked all of the volunteers for their hard work. Can Pretty Lights Brighten Your Mood?

As someone w h o ex p e r i e n c e s Seasonal Depression ever y winter, I have noticed that s i n c e t h e C h r i s tmas lights have been coming on it brings some cheer into the long winter evenings. Instead of going out in the evenings and seeing a dark, dismal street without leaves on the trees and sunlight shining the lights on houses and displays in the yards somehow seem to break the gloominess of winter. I love the Christmas season mostly because of the lights and the displays

and of ten wish they would stay up longer than the just in the season. I know how they brighten my mood and it makes me wonder if they have the same effect on other people who suffer from seasonal depression? Light therapy is one of the suggested treatments for individuals who suffer f r o m s e a s o n a l a f f e c t i ve d i s o r d e r because it mimics sunshine. Typically, you sit in front of the light box for 30 minutes a day which is supposed to stimulate your body’s circadian rhythms and suppress its natural release of melatonin. But what if a visual stimulus such as Christmas lights or even bright white lights brightening up our community during the winter months
In the month of O c to b er 2017, Ve r m i l i o n R C M P responded to 350 c alls for ser vice. Of those, 134 are property crimes, 99 are traffic related, 19 are false alarms, 16 are persons crimes, 8 are animal complaints, 5 are domestic related, 2 are related to mental health concerns and 67 are other calls for service. During this time, 33 criminal code and 11 provincial (tickets) charges were laid. Files of note: Vermilion RCMP located a vehicle being driven. Members determined the driver of the vehicle had consumed alcohol and began an impaired dr i v ing invest ig at i o n. As a result of the investigation, 21 ye a r o l d M a r k H a r a s y m u k of Star Cit y, Saskatchewan was c harg e d with refusing to provide a breath sample. Harasymuk was released from custody on a Promise to Appear. This matter remains before the courts. Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of an erratic driver. Members located the suspect vehicle. As a result of the investigation, 32 year old Pavos Darmanin of Wainwright, Alberta was charged w i t h r e f u s i n g to p r ov i d e a breath sample. Darmanin was released from custody on a Promise to Appear. This m at ter re m a i n s b efore t h e courts. Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a male utteri n g t hr e at s. A s a r e s u l t of the investigation, 25 year old Grant Davidson of Vermilion, Photo submitted
RCMP executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant at a residence in Vermilion and arrested a male inside without incident. Police seized multiple firearms and wea p o n s, $1, 5 0 0 c a s h al o n g w it h marihuana, cannabis resin, cocaine, methamphetamine, psilocybin (mushr o o m s), o x y c o d o n e a n d f e n t a n y l tablets. Two stolen ATV’s and a snow blower were also recovered. Mark Richard James Cameron, a 4 3 -year- o l d fr o m Ver m ili o n wa s charged with 34 Criminal Code offences which include: • Possession of property obtained by crime (X3) • P o s s e s s i o n o f a p r o h i b i t e d weapon (X3) • Unauthorized Possession of a firearm (X5) • Possession for the purpose of trafficking (X7)
Possession of a weapon/firearm/ammunition while prohibited (X11) He was remanded into custody after a judicial hearing and is set to appear in Vegreville Provincial Court on Nov. 27, 2017 via CCTV. “The business of drug trafficking risks the lives of everyone involved,” says Corporal Corey Buckingham of the Ver milio n RCMP Det ac hment. “Drugs such as these have a detrimental impact on the communities we serve but every seizure we make plays a vital part in making our streets safer.” Members of the public who suspect drug or gang activity in their community can call local police, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1- 800 -222-TIPS (8 47 7 ). it? Or is it just because I am excited about the season? I don’t know for sure. It would be interesting to know if the bright lights of Christmas also seem to help other people who experience Seasonal Affective Disorder. My thoughts are we put up patio lights on patios in the summer months because we enjoy it. We sit and watch a fire in fire pits, and I would think it is because we enjoy watching the light from the fire flicker and change colour. So logically, I would think that Christmas lights or even bright lights up after the holidays could possibly help damper the effects of SAD, even if it didn’t, it sure would look nice during those long winter months.

could have even the slightest effect on someone in a positive way? I know for me the seasonal depression seems to start when the evenings get dark and long. My sleep pattern gets all out of whack as soon as the time change happens. I want to go to bed earlier because by 9 p.m. it feels like 11 p.m. as it’s been dark for so long and then by 1 a.m. I am awake staring at the ceiling or tossing from side to side. When the Christmas season starts and the lights come on it seems to cheer me up for that little while and the nights don’t seem so long. Then when the lights are taken down and the evenings become darker, it comes rushing back. Is there a correlation to

Its Christmas baking time and sugar cookies are on the Christmas classic list. They can often be found at holiday gatherings and most importantly on a plate for Santa Claus with a glass of milk. They are easy to make and use the most basic of ingredients. They are easy to dress up and take to any holiday party. They can be cut with cookie cutters into a variety of shapes. They can be left plain or be decorated with icing, coloured sugar, and sprinkles. They can be drizzled or dipped in chocolate. They can even have a half of a candied cherry pressed into the middle. For Mexican sugar cookies, sprinkle the cookies with a mixture
of sugar and cinnamon when the cookies are still warm, fresh out of the oven. The history of sugar cookies goes all the way back to ancient Persia, 7th century AD. Cookies were baked until very dry and hard, to increase storage time and portability. With the Crusades and the spice trade, the cookery of Persia spread through Europe and to England. The sugar cookie recipes of the middle ages in England, favoured the added spices of cloves, mace or saffron. They also would have had any one of the following ingredients added into the sugar cookie base: anise seeds, coriander seeds or currents. In the middle ages England, rose water was used to flavour the cookie as well. Sugar was expensive during the middle ages and the baking of these cookies was saved for special times, like the Christmas celebrations. In
German speaking Italy, there is a sugar cookie recipe in which the sweet spices are added, and then the dough is chilled for several days, to allow the spice flavours to develop, before baking the dough into cookies. From the middle ages to the present day, and around the world, the sugar cookie recipe has evolved, but it is still a Christmas favourite. Even though are easy to make, they burn quickly, so keep a close eye on them. They are best made using real butter. Sugar Cookies 1/2 cup butter – room temperature 2/3 cup sugar 1 egg yolk 1 1/2 cups flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

A s a r e l a t i ve l y young Dad with adolescent kids, it can definitely be a daunting challenge in this day to not only impart the knowledge to discern right from wrong but also to recognize when the situation requires stepping above the fray and not picking sides. Youngsters (at least mine anyway) often deal with understanding the world or stories better when there is a clearly identifiable ‘good guy’ and ‘bad guy’ to identify with but struggle mightily when the lines and the grey areas blur. The concepts become abstract, and it is not so easy to tell on the program who is really playing for the home team and who isn’t. My oldest at this point frames the world through those clear and
logical, concrete, and ordered terms but she could be hampered in that by being influenced by two parents who have been systems analysts, where everything is ‘0’ or ‘1’ and not even a semi-colon is allowed to be in the wrong place. Yeah…it’s going to be harder to pick up on the abstract given that union. I suppose this subject…the right and wrong and everything in between…is one that is a never-ending battle. Sometimes the not picking sides IS the right thing to do though…sort of like choosing to be that unloved but absolutely necessary referee that makes the game taking place possible and fair for everyone that wants to play but doesn’t really get any fanfare for doing it. The one battleground right now that has me thinking about keeping that ‘neutral’ referee side in place is Net Neutrality. Now I can tell you that over 20 years ago when my first connection to the Internet was at
best 28.8 Kbps, worrying whether someone was throttling my connection was not on the radar. Getting throttled by family for holding up the phone line for hours was much higher up on the list. I suppose the problem here is the Internet game has grown so incredibly far beyond warbling modems and PC geeks: it touches and runs everything we do or say globally 24/7. When you get in that league, there is always going to be someone or some company, lacking in conscience in my opinion, who will choose to selfishly exploit an opportunity for a ‘bigger piece of the pie’ rather than see no opportunity existed to begin with: only the public good exists. With billions of little packets of info each day routed along by little programs, through the air or down little wires, that could suddenly start having a gatekeeper at your provider that is looking down its nose at each one of them coming

I guess we’re all riding around on a spinning ball to begin with…

The Vermilion Folk Club will be hosting Alberta artist, Matt Patershuk, at the Elk’s Hall on December 16, at 8 p.m. Ad va n c e d t i c ke t s o n l y c a n b e purchased for $20 at the Vermilion Credit Union. Patershuk’s CD release show in Vermilion for his new album, ‘Same As I Ever Have Been,’ is expected to rock the house both with his energy and originality. “Some of the songs were louder and rougher than anything I’d done on my past albums, but I jumped right in without fear, hit the ground running and played with all the energy I could muster,” said Patershuk about creating the album. The album includes Honky-Tonk, Blues,
Celtic and Folk genres and according to his bio, with this new album, Patershuk won’t stay one of Canadian music’s bestkept secrets for much longer. It also notes that his songwriting perspective is highly individual. His bio states that “every song on ‘Same As I Ever Have Been’ resonates with a warm roadhouse, barn dance feel that can’t be faked.” Coming from La Glace, Alberta, Patershuk’s lyrics take a real and relatable approach to those living in rural Alberta, and are taken from his experience with ranch life, bridge building, a changing economy, and loss. Rita Elliot has owned Lakeland Florists for the last 24 years and was thrilled to open Vermilion Jewellers one year ago. “We have had a very good response from the community. The community has been very supportive and encouraging. We have done well in our first year,” said Manager Donna Kiziak. Along with all of the Canadian

Living Well Capital Campaign Kickoff Event

Vermilion Valley Lodge held the Living Well Capital Campaign Kickoff Event on November 25. The event started with words of welcome from Vermilion Valley Lodge manager, Sheri Heller who introduced Brenda Lee, the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation volunteer chair of the Living Well Capital Campaign. Lee believes the modernization of the facility is long overdue. “We believe in this project to provide modern, safe, respectful, comfortable senior housing,” said Lee. Lee went on to discuss how many of the Lodge rooms are extremely small and are no longer compliant with the Government of Alberta’s standards for the quality of living
that seniors require. She expressed her thanks for how responsive local businesses have been in contributing to this project with $1.1 million raised. “I am absolutely thrilled to be a part of a community who steps up to support big projects and make our community strong and vibrant. In this case, the community is dedicated to honouring our seniors. On behalf of the volunteer campaign team, thank you for your commitment to supporting this project” said Lee. Vermilion Mayor Caroline McAuley, said “this project is a vision we had as a municipality for quite a while, keeping our residents in our community is so important. I am looking forward to the grand opening.” Also in attendance were guest speakers Councilor Dale Swyripa, from the County

VES is proud to be hosting Alsena White for a series of “Kokum” visits in the Grade 1 and 3 classrooms. Alsena is a traditional knowledge keeper and Kokum, grandmother, from Saddle Lake Cree Nation. Students are learning about traditional ways of life, asking lots of questions, and even learning to sing in Cree. The Grade 4- 6 drama club did a superb job of presenting their play “Dragon Trouble” on November 17 and 18. Thank you to Mrs. Doherty and Mrs. Goodwin for being the directors. As well, we would like to thank the approximate 150 member audience who supported these fine actors/actresses. Thank you for supporting our Kinder-

before the boys’ departure on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, students and staff lined the concourse and halls cheering on the team as the players marched on with Coach Campbell following behind. The game was streamed live in several classes during Thursday’s opening game that J. R. won against the home team. The long-awaited 2016-17 yearbooks have arrived! Graduates of 2017 who purchased a copy may pick up theirs at the office. We’re almost sold out, but there are a few left if you want one. Yearbooks can be
purchased at the office for $40. 2017-2018 yearbooks will be available to order shortly. Last Thursday night the Blackbeard Pirate Crew hosted a movie night at the school. Students and their families were invited to watch Pirates of the Caribbean on large-screen in the main gymnasium. The school’s big popcorn machine was also a main attraction. For grade 12 students, if you need assistance with your post-secondary applications, career planning, or hunting for scholarships, please do not hesitate to contact

Also, high school students in work experience/ RAP/ Green Certificates, please continue to submit hours and complete necessary paperwork on a regular basis. The talents of their head coach gifted this group of young men, like a decade of athletes before them. Coach Rogan consistently did more than turn good players into better players. He did more than teach them how to win on the court. Coach Rogan, for the last decade, has guided and encouraged our athletes (with outstanding patience) to be winners in the game of life! His mentorship has created a ripple that will be felt for years to come, far away from the halls of St. Jerome’s and the streets of Vermilion. Thank you, Coach Rogan, for being the role model you have been. We thank you for your dedicated commitment to our athletes and our school. Your presence in the St. Jerome’s volleyball program will be sorely missed. May God bless you. The “Roots of Empathy” program has started at St. Jerome’s and the students
are thrilled to have met baby Hendrix! “Roots of Empathy” is a classroom program that aims to reduce aggression and bullying among school children. Children learn about emotions and social skills as well as empathy. At the heart of this program is our Vermilion family and their infant who visit the classroom every three weeks over the school year. Kari Thompson, our VIBE coach and trained “Roots of Empathy” Instructor, coaches students to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. Baby Hendrix is our little teacher this year and she helps children identify and reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others. “Roots of Empathy” focus on teaching inclusion and builds caring in the students. Kari also visits before and after each family visit to prepare and reinforce teachings using a specialized lesson plan for each visit. The children learn from watching the loving parentchild relationship and will someday use
this in their own parenting. On Tuesday, November 22 there was a lot of facial hair being sported in the hallways of St. Jerome’s as student from all grade levels participated in “Moustache Day.” St. Jerome’s also raised money for Prostrate Cancer throughout the day. A handful of our spectacular Spartans, were given the privilege of attending the annual Jr. High Leadership Conference, in Ponoka, November 17 and 18. Students were inspired with positive words from Alvin Law and Ian Tyson. The teens were assigned a “Spirit Group” in which older students lead activities, create discussions, and teach cheers! The main goal of the two-day event was to empower the students to return to their schools with new ideas and energy to promote a fun and respectful atmosphere. Thank you to Mr. MacMillan and Mrs. Protsch for chaperoning this wonderful group of young leaders!

The money that was earned will directly benefit the Kindergarten students in the purchasing of a wide range of learning resources, puzzles, games, toys and manipulatives, as well as materials they need to do a variety of fun activities throughout the year. The Art Gallery of Alberta is pleased to present VES with a First Nations, Metis, and Inuit selection called Wayfinders from its Travelling Exhibition Show. This exhibition combines three unique talents. From a world master – George Littlechild – to a mid career painter – Paul Smith – and an emerging artist exploring new directions – Amy Malbeuf – viewers are treated to a unique and compelling exhibition that draws upon personal reflections and experiences. Come wander the VES halls and take a look.
Operation Christmas Child
VES was excited to have Sylvia Malo visit our school on November 2 and 23. She was working with teachers in ECS and Grade 1, 2 and 6 on mathematics instruction. Sylvia was in classrooms modeling lessons to enhance mathematics instruction. What a wonderful two days of professional learning. The Kindergarten students had a fun learning experience at the Police Station on November 22 and 23. The police officers explained everything they carry on their duty belts and what each item is used for, they toured them around to see the jail cells, and they let the students look through their police vehicles. The police clearly explained all the ways they help to keep us safe and the importance of following rules. Students had many questions and were excited to learn what a police officer does while at work.
Several students commented about wanting to be police officers when they grow up. Thanks to the RCMP detachment for welcoming us to their worksite and helping our young students have a better understanding of what they do. Teachers from around Buffalo Trail School Division attended their second of three TES (Teaching Effective Strategies) Team Days on November 24. During these days, teachers work with other teachers across the division who teach the same grade or subject area as themselves and plan projects and lessons to enhance student learning. Written applications must prove need of financial assistance (in accordance with County Policy) for facility operation purposes and must be accompanied with the Facility’s Audited Annual Financial Statement (2016). Applications will be received by the County of Two Hills No. 21 on or prior to December 8, 2017. Recreation funds will be distributed for approved applications in December 2017. Sgt. Wilson’s Air Force Show

Approximately 100 people gathered at the Vermilion Senior’s Centre on November 24, for the Sgt. Wilson’s Air Force Show. Delighted by the music of the 1940’s and 1950’s, the crowd was taken down memory lane, with the added use of costumes, and props. The theatrical musical production included dance and depicted an accurate recreation of the time-period. Having been in Canada for one month
so far, the four performers and one soundman travelled from Holland, and plan to be home for Christmas. Their tour has been in the works for the past year and the Vermilion Senior’s Centre was thrilled to host the show. “We’re grateful to Lakeland College for partnering with us and providing the performer’s respite at Alumni House. We’d like to thank Sgt. Wilson’s Air Force Show for offering to come to Vermilion, as well as the community for their support,” said Executive Assistant, Dianne Dunn.

Hosted by The Good Life Institute, guests enjoyed visiting while sampling a large assortment of beverages and appetizers. “This event is a great opportunity for people to mingle, introduce new tastes to our liquor stores, and provide knowledge about the intricacies of scotch, wine and beer products. Every time that we have people from outside of Vermilion come to this event, I continuously get compliments from them about how welcoming it feels and that you can tell that we embrace a sense of community. The thing I love about this event is that everyone has a good time. No matter the age or walk of life, everyone can find a taste
that suits them,” said Candice Anderson, The Good Life Institute Coordinator. The Vermilion Wellness Coalition held their third annual bowling and curling events on November 24. These events are organized to give children the opportunity to get out and be active while having fun.

‘Tree To Our Nature’ Canada 150 Legacy Program

Community members and dignitaries gathered at the Vermilion Regional Centre on November 25, to celebrate the ‘Tree To Our Nature’ Canada 150 Legacy Program. On October 11, 70 trees and shrubs were planted adjacent to Lakeland College and the Vermilion Regional Centre. Species included Tamarack, “ S m o key ” S a s k a t o o n , L o d g e p o l e Pine, “ Herber t ” Paper Birch, Trembling Aspen, Big Sagebrush, Limber Pine, Mountain Alder, and Red Osier Dogwood. L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e’s I n d i g e n o u s representative, Kevin John, noted that many of the plants are native to the area and hold medicinal properties, and shared his feelings on Vermilion being among the best places in Canada. “As a re c o n c iliat i o n proje c t , we ex tend an arm of compassion and hope that peace is brought through love, respect, and unity,” said John. A grant of nearly $5,000 was received from Tree Canada to complete the
