Approximately 100 people registe r e d fo r t h e 6 t h A n n u a l O va r i a n Cancer Canada Walk of Hope at the Vermilion Provincial Park on September 10. The walk began in Vermilion to highlight the late Lyla Fee’s courageous battle with the disease. Participants this year enjoyed the weather along 2.5km, 5km, or 10km walks as well as a barbeque, sparkle tattoos, and acoustic musical entertainment by Kaitlyn Kwasnykia. “It’s beautiful, and a good cause,” said Caroline McKinnon. According to Ovarian Cancer Canada, thousands of Canadian women are currently living with ovarian cancer and sur vival rates have

not improved in 50 years. They estimate that this year 2,800 Canadian women will be newly diagnosed with this disease. Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer for women a n d i s t h e m o s t s e r i o u s wo m e n’s cancer. According to Ovarian Cancer Canada, there is no reliable screening test for Ovarian Cancer. They recommend asking questions and getting second opinions. “I had participated in the past and wanted to help raise awareness. We would like to thank the volunteers, sponsors, donors, and par ticipants for their support,” said event co-chair Katie Kwasnycia. Appreciating local talents, approximately 500 people gathered for The Good Life Institute’s ‘Art In The Park’ event at Vermilion’s Heritage Park on September 9. A combination of painting competition, classes, artisan vendors, and tasty treats, the event was a source of entertainment for people of all ages. Inter Pipeline sponsored the lunch which

included hotdogs by Lasting Impressions Catering and cinnamon buns from the community oven. Inter Pipleine Op Tech Corey Gabruk said, “It’s a great thing the community started, and provides an excellent way to interact with the community.” “The whole event was magnificent. Students in Vermilion bounced back to school, eager for their first day on September 5. The community was attentive as yellow buses lined the streets and parents encouraged their children for the upcoming season of learning. According to Allan Chase, St. Jerome’s School Principal, there was a lot of excite-

Currently, we still have Craig’s, but once they are gone, I’m not exactly sure where we will have to shop local for clothing items, except the Bargain Shop. One thing about fall time is the jump right back into activity on many so fronts… like students back to school, universities, and colleges. It also means a return for some to the hectic pace of harvest season out on the farm, or if you work in an industry of projects building ‘widgets’ of any kind the nibbling around on smaller things for the summer

On The Road Again

(while everyone uses their vacation days) ends and bigger items in the plan pick back up. For anyone that has been working all summer on a construction site…the pressure to get as much done before the snow flies begins to increase as the days left on the calendar run down to still fit everything in. A few of us may have seen all sides of the above as we progress through our lives as kids and adults. Lucky us, eh? I remember a lot of those past early September days as hot, sunny, and dry afternoons, head leaning against the glass looking out the side window on the long slow rides home down dusty gravel roads on the bus after school. The first ones on it and the last ones to get off. It wasn’t such a bad thing after all though… after the daily diet of CFCW streaming from Dad’s ‘Old Red’ half ton truck out in the Coulee building fences all summer, it seemed like

a rather refreshing break getting back to school and listening to the new crop of one hit wonder 80’s tunes for the first time on CHED. Not too much longer after, the roads got longer as being ‘on the road’ to work on the roads took over. That kind of construction gig for a few years, working around crushers and asphalt plants, gave a long look at a lot of different places on the map, some mundane and some a little more interesting. It was a lucky break really even if the job became a boring routine once you had settled into each new place you worked from…it was one way to see Alberta in all its glory that you would not have gotten otherwise. I’m sure a lot of those working out in the oil patch would have a similar story to tell in that respect. I didn’t really know anyone that really travelled all that much when I was younger, other than perhaps my Uncle Herman who seemed to get

around to what I thought were strange and faraway places like Missouri, so getting to travel as part of a job was kind of uncharted territory on two levels. So what is it about being on the road travelling though, at least for a job, that can be both maddening and exhilarating all at the same time? Being away from home and loved ones and missing out on things like playing on a sports team with friends can be on one side…the other getting to do things you never likely would have been able to do if not for the job like visit the Alamo, see an MLB game in a desert city, see the Louisville Slugger bat factory, or get on the biggest army base in the free world. Stuff like that just might happen to you. Anyway, I’ll have to apologize for a hiatus on stories as work takes me this fall on a sojourn out of good old Alberta for a little while to Boston, MA. Maybe I’ll even find a new Bobby Orr lunch box in my travels.

Small Business Owners To MPs: ‘Stop Hitting Us With New Taxes’

14,691 petition letters to be sent to MPs today Ottawa, September 5, 2017 – The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) will deliver 14,691 petition letters to MPs, today, from business owners concerned about the increased tax burden being placed on them by Ottawa. “As the federal Liberals convene at their caucus meeting in Kelowna and Conservative MPs in Winnipeg, independent business owners want their MPs to know that they’re being unfairly targeted. Small business owners have been slammed with increased payroll taxes, higher EI premiums, and new environmental levies – they feel like they’re being hit from all sides,” said Dan Kelly, President of CFIB. “This is deeply troubling because it shows a grow-

ing disconnect between Ottawa and the small business community, the group this government is counting on for job-creation, innovation and economic growth.” The federal government has also broken its election promise to lower the small business corporate tax rate to 9 per cent and recently announced new proposals that would dramatically alter the way small businesses are taxed in Canada. If implemented, the new tax rules would restrict small business owners from sharing income with family members; hike taxes on some investments; and make it more difficult for business owners to transfer their business to the next generation. “In my 23 years of working on behalf of small businesses, I have not seen this degree of spontaneous outrage toward any other policy,” added Kelly. “Tax experts are describing these proposals as massive

It was a great weekend of shared memories from students, teachers, secretaries, and bus drivers from J. R. Robson Class of 1977. Hosted at the Vermilion Legion Hall, 71 guests, of which 37 were former students, enjoyed a steak/chicken supper and an evening of class trivia, games and prizes. Dewberry Welcomes Home Chuckwagon Teams

After a successful summer away, Dewberry’s four chuckwagon teams were celebrated at the Communit y Pride’s beef on a bun supper, which was the first event in the new Arena. On September 9, Kurt Bensmiller, Chance Bensmiller, Vern Nolin, and Dallas Dyck were thrilled to be home and were thankful to have over 200 people attend and show their support. A subdivision of the Dewberry Agricultural Society, the Community Pride group prepared the meal and all of the fixings. Guests enjoyed visiting, door prizes, a 50/50 draw, a slideshow highlighting the areas outriders and drivers, as well as some old school stories. Congratulations were given

by Lloydminster-Vermilion MLA Richard Starke, County of Vermilion River Reeve Dar yl Wat t, and past Mayor Headley Dennill. According to Allan Parr, President of the Dewberr y Agricultural Society, construction on the Arena began i n M ar c h of 2 015, a n d t h e f i n i s h ing touches are underway. They are expecting to have the ice in at the end of September, and are looking forward to hosting a Grand Opening on November 24. “We’re excited to see the ice after being without it last season. But those qualities didn’t dampen their excitement to play the new to them and quite different format football. Alberta’s 6-Man League The 6-man league has more than 20 teams covering the province from north to south and east to west. Like the other Alberta high school league the season culminates in an Alberta Bowl provincial final at Foote Field in Edmonton. The Marauders will be in the northern division and play Millwoods, Redwater, Breton as well as Jasper and Hinton. Their

first opponent will be Assumption from Cold Lake. Sedgewick, a former Wheatland team, is in the south division. 6-Man History The 6-man game was born in either Nebraska or Texas in the 1930s, both claim to have the first games played in their states. As with any football in Texas, the 6-man game is revered and shuts down towns for Friday night games. Its popularity isn’t limited to the US and is growing in Canada. The best-established leagues are in Saskatchewan. Six-man football is especially celebrated for its high scoring. Some leagues keep track of the highest scoring games of all time with some of scores topping 80 points per team. September 14, 2017 will mark the start of a different era in Vermilion Marauder football as the team hosts its first Alberta Sixman League game. New players didn’t replenish a large group of graduating Marauders. Instead of folding the team, the Marauders dropped out of the 12-man Wheatland league and pursued at least an exhibition season playing the 6-man game. After arranging a practice and controlled scrimmage with Millwoods Christian Academy for Sept 8, the Marauders were asked to fill a spot in the league after another team left. “The league has been very welcoming,” says Lorne Maier, the Marauders heat coach. This included the tip filled practice and scrimmage in Edmonton last Friday. One of those tips was to expect a lot of on-side punts. It came after Marauder punter Cameron Bartley faked a punt and scrambled for a first down. Fans should expect those types of nontypical plays in the high scoring and fast game that is 6-man football. For the Marauders, the taste of the 6-man game was met with enthusiasm, “This is so much fun,” said third-year Marauder Bartley. “Running back is the sickest thing ever.” “I love it,” was Wyatt Payne’s reaction as he came off the field from practicing punt formations. “Defense is so fun,” added the second year Marauder. “It’s awesome,” echoed Jonathan Pries as he took a turn on the sidelines after practicing punt returns. All the Marauders expect to have more touches this year from the combination of a small roster and the game logistics “There’s a lot more opportunity,” said Seth Mansfield, another second year player. FCC Donates To VES Hot Lunch

Farm Credit Canada donated $1,000 to Vermilion Elementary School’s Hot Lunch Program on September 6. “There is definitely a need for it, and FCC has been supporting the hot lunch program among other initiatives in Vermilion and surrounding communities in the past. We were happy to be able to add a little extra this year,” said Les McLaughlin, FCC Senior Relationship Manager. Knowing that hunger can directly impact a student’s ability to learn, FCC invested an extra $100,000 in school feeding programs across Canada through their ‘Drive Away Hunger’ program. The Hot Lunch Program was overjoyed to have received the donation.

During the September long weekend, you may have noticed four ladies painting up a storm on the west side of the Vermilion Paint and Home Decor store. Owner, Doreen McRobert decided that the west wall of her building needed some beautifying after the building next to it was taken down. “I realized the side of the building looked bad once the other building came down and I knew I had to paint the wall to help preserve my building, so we decided to paint a mural,” said McRobert. The Latest Stained Glass Window

The United Church dedicated their most recent addition of stained glass windows made by Art Boggs to celebrate all women in ministry on September 10. Art Boggs is a past Lakeland College Dean of Trades and Technology, and

an active community member who has enjoyed taking up glass work in his retirement. A large collection of his work can be viewed at the United Church. According to Joyce Cunningham and Dot Hartwell, Boggs had the window completed within a couple of weeks and was so happy to have

been asked to do it. “I started making stained glass windows as a hobby. For a time I sold pieces through Allied Arts but became so busy that now I just do it for recreation,” said Boggs. According to Boggs the process takes time because after selecting the colours you want, you have to cut each piece to

fit the pattern you are creating. Then each piece has the edge wrapped in foil before they are soldered together. “Depending on the thickness of the glass, the thicker the foil you use,” said Boggs who purchases his glass from Calgary, Edmonton or Vancouver; most coming originally from China.

Manager, Dana Biller, has been keeping busy for the past year with his new business; Wheatland Blasting and Painting. Biller had 25 years of experience in fabrication shops and the oilfield before he began getting into painting and sandblasting for customers by request. “When the oilfield slowed down in the area, I seized the opportunity. Because the need was there, I opted to purchase

bigger equipment to better be able to provide these services to the people. This broadened the value added to the services I could provide,” said Biller. Biller went on to explain that instead of clients having to go to separate locations to get repair work, blasting, or painting done that he can offer all of these services and relocate to operate on site throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. His company provides portable dry and wet blasting and welding repairs including cutting out and replacing rusted

metal, to gravel trucks and commercial trailers, oilfield equipment and trucks, farm equipment including grain trucks, trailers and grain bins, as well as graffiti removal. “There’s a certain amount of care that you have to take to repair something properly. Getting my hands in there and figuring things out was always something I was interested in. Taking things back to their original condition can provide interesting challenges but has been very rewarding. It adds to my trade making it

more dynamic and gives me the freedom to work on different projects each time,” said Biller. Biller was pleased to be able to announce that these services are available in the community. “I like the Vermilion area. I grew up here, and look forward to interacting more with people in the community,” said Biller who felt like being raised in Vermilion taught him the importance of working together with everyone in order to accomplish what one has set out to do.

Masterpiece Therapies 1st Anniversary

Clients, friends, and family all gathered to congratulate owner, Janine Lange, on one year of business with Masterpiece Therapies at the Prairie Place building in Vermilion on September 5. “It has gone very fast but has been a very good year. I’m thankful to my patients and to the town who are really supportive of business owners and events,” said Lange who offered homemade cupcakes and coffee throughout the afternoon. Lange’s physiotherapy business has grown in the past year, and she has been able to maximize her space with decorating improvements and incorporating new equipment. Her clinic now offers a gel warmer for a more comfortable ultrasound, as well as heat packs, anatomy pictures, and anatomy models. According to Lange, the 3D models work better than pictures to demonstrate to patients how their joints work, how muscles move, and that if something isn’t

aligned, what symptoms they can feel. During her first year in business, Lange also acquired her Certificate of Completion for Clinical Mentorship on the Integrated Systems Model. The five-month course required her to travel to White Rock, British Columbia to train with students from the United States, Japan, Finland and the UK. “I always like to keep educating myself and taking courses,” said Lange. Lange plans to complete a 4-day craniosacral course in September and said that she wants to find out more on what nourishes the spine and be able to offer something unique. Patients were eager to share how helpful Lange’s services had been to them. “During my first experience with physiotherapy, she helped me to get movement back in my knee. She was informative and gave me extra exercises to do, as well as stimulate blood flow with the use of Interferential Current. Studio, Vermilion Pond Hockey, K.I.D.S. Making A Difference Club, Kings Kids, and SHAPE Studio were bustling as participants signed up to start a new year of activities. Ryan Wilson, Vermilion Dance Impressions Owner and Instructor, said that they are in their 17th year and are really looking forward to continuing being a strong part of the community and providing a high level of dance education in the area. “I’ve had the privilege of teaching children since they were two-years-old, giving them a solid background, and some are now dancing professionally and teaching elsewhere. I think it’s great to have something

local that can offer students national level qualifications,” said Wilson who is regularly called out to share her knowledge of the dance world by teaching workshops and adjudicating festivals throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. R. also hosted its Pirate Crew Election to choose student leaders of four house teams; leaders would determine and organize the year’s events like dances, contests, festive activities. School pictures and class schedules were also ironed out. Not yet finished the first week of school, students have already been invited to represent Marauder athletes in volleyball, golf, football, and cross country running, with all four sports starting tryouts and drills already. The big annual senior high tournament Megavolley was hosted on September 8 and 9. The other teams have already begun practice, conditioning, and team building. Speaking of team work, J. R. is always in search of community volunteers who enjoy working with kids, know a thing or two about sports, or can offer their time to special events. If you’re interested in lending a hand, please let us know! We’d love to have you aboard. The week prior to students’ return, teachers were in a whirlwind of course planning and classroom preparation. We also collaborated with Tom Hierck, an educator of 35 years, motivational speaker, and author of “Seven Keys to Positive Learning”. His ideas helped

formulate and finalize our school’s mantra. The encompassing statement, “Marauders: Explore Create Achieve”. Enterprise and Innovation 8 Class from the previous school year would like to thank Tannis Henderson for donating prizes to first, second and third place teams. “ Wel c ome Bac k ” and “Welcome to St. Jerome’s” signs and decorations greeted ever yone as they entered St. Jerome’s on the first day back to school. Our 23 student council members had set up juice, granola bar, coffee and hot chocolate stations in the school, which were handed out to families, students and staff as they entered St. Jerome’s. High School students were encouraged to participate in the “Minute To Win It” activities set up at their entrance. The Student Council members also directed students to their classrooms and answered any questions parents or students had. Student Council had put in many hours even before school started to make sure staff, students and parents felt welcomed on the first day of school. They decorated every entrance way, and in many other places throughout the school. They have also set up a calendar with a variety of activities, dress-up days and other events, which will take place throughout the year. St. Jerome’s has been full of an incredible amount of excitable energy this first week as staff, students and families were all excited to see each other after an amazing summer. With

so many new staff members and many new students lots of time was spent getting to know each other. Students were racing around the school as many teachers had “treasure hunts” planned for their students. Lots of “First Day” artwork was completed and students had time to share special summer moments and information about themselves throughout the first couple of d ays. The sc hool looked ama zing thanks to our fantastic custodians, Dorothy and Ernie Decker, who worked incredibly hard this summer to get the school sparkling. All students at St. Jerome’s were treated to a hot dog and juice during our “Welcome Back BBQ” held at noon on Thursday, September 7. Student Council, and Mrs. and Mrs. MacMillan organized the event making sure each student received their lunch. Thank you to Ron Roth, Ed Mistal and Jack Seewalt, members of the Knight of Columbus for grilling the hotdogs for us. The Volleyball season started day one of school as all Jr. and Sr. Girls and Boys teams have started practicing and the Sr. teams were off to their first tournaments of the season. The Sr. Girl and JV Girl teams both participated in J.R. Robson’s Mega-Volley, while the Sr. Boy’s Team traveled to Camrose to play in a 36-team tournament. During the last week of August the

staff of St. Jerome’s were busy getting the school prepared for the 2017-2018 school year. We had a whole staf f professional development day focused on teaching language to all learners. The staff also attended Mission and Ministry day in Wainwright with staff from the division. David Wells, Catholic Education Speaker, inspired us all to reflect on our “Calling from God” during

this school year and how each day we can inspire students to listen and search for their calling. Upcoming Dates: Thursday, Sept. 14 – Sock and Sandal Day, September 15 & 16 – Sr. Girls Volleyball Home Tournament, Monday, Sept. 18 – Grade 5 and Grade 2 start swimming, September 20 & 21 – Grade 10 Retreat, Thursday, Sept, 28 – Fall Supper.

September 12 is Community Expo and Registration Night at the school. Come and see what is being offered in the community, e.g. 4-H, figure skating, hockey. Our Parent School Council will also be having

a BBQ that evening. For $5 they are offering a burger, drink and dessert. Everyone in the community is welcome to attend. This year students in Foods 10 with Mrs. Wagner will be cooking for the students of Mannville School as part of one of their modules. Students will be given forms a week before the “FOODS FRIDAY” to order as they will be rotating through Poutine, Taco Salad, and Ukrainian Food. year Rhys Amero will be headed to Wainwright on September 19 to compete in the BTJHAA golf tournament. Our high school team is traveling to the Grand Centre Golf Club on September 18 to compete in the NEASAA Zone Tournament with the opportunity to advance to the ASAA Provincial Tournament in Edmonton. Representing Mannville School this year are Baylee Strowger, Zach Polishuk, Quinn Harder, and Max Amero. The first PAC meeting of the year will be on Monday, September 18 at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Another date to mark on your calendar at home is Lifetouch Picture day on September 28.

The VES staf f would like to welcome all of our VES families. We are so excited to be back in school to make and share learning experiences. Teachers were very busy the week before last, preparing for the arrival of students, engaging in important school level conversations about the new school year and collaborating with colleagues across BTPS in the first of three Teacher Effectiveness Support Team days. Now we are extremely happy to have students in our classrooms. To start the first day of school, every stud ent re c eived a smoothie from the Healthy Schools Healthy Future program. In period three, we had an assembly, starting with the mass singing of O’Canada, our VES song, and the recognition of Treaty 6 territory. Mrs. Webb went over our mot to of Being the Best We Can Be and talked about our virtues. Our overriding virtue for this school year will once again be that of respect and we will discuss that periodically with our classes. September’s virtue is goal setting. Please make it one of your goals to join us on September 14 for our muffin morning open house from 7:45-9. This will be a drop-in morning to allow you to see your c hild ’s c lassroom and teacher, and to tour the school. According to WILDNorth, the Northern Alberta Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in Edmonton, Olaf the Owl is alive and well. “We still have Olaf and he has become friends with our other resident owl, Cecil. Olaf does fly and there is still an outside possibility that he may be released at some point. If not, we will likely keep him as a companion for Cecil,” said Kim Blomme, RVT, CWR | Director of Wildlife Services - WILDNorth. Olaf had been found injured near Vermilion some time ago, and had a bleak outlook for some time. The Vermilion Voice staff who located the owl, are grateful to WILDNorth for their special care of Olaf. If you are concerned about injured or orphaned wildlife, you can call the WILDNorth wildlife hotline at 780-9144118. WILDNorth offers helpful suggestions including preventative measure to avoid birds who may hit your window. If they have already, WILDNorth suggests protecting them from predators by plac-
