Hundreds of community members stopped by A&W in Vermilion to support their ‘Burgers To Beat MS’ and ‘Cruisin’ The Dub’ Campaign on August 24. A large group of local ladies came to support their friends living with Multiple Sclerosis, enjoying a meal and visiting together. “Everyone is affected differently,” said Jane Mercier, who was diagnosed at age 57, which she noted being as unusual. Typically, those with MS are diagnosed as young adults. Donna DeFord was diagnosed 23 years ago and is in remission, but still struggles with balance.
“When the medicine stops working, you have to go through the process of finding a new one that works. When people say, ‘You look good,’ I often want to scream and say, ‘I wish you could see my brain and damaged nerves,’” said DeFord. Mayor, Bruce MacDuff volunteered to serve burgers during the event, and customers rallied in support of the cause. According to the MS Society of Canada’s Lloydminster Chapter Coordinator for Programs and Services, Valerie Lazicki, the funds raised by the campaign will go towards both research and local programs and services. The local chapter shares information on financial stability and support groups which include a
coffee group and a dinner group. “The dinner group provides a natural way for people to be comfortable and break bread together. Last year this campaign raised $1.6 million, and we hope to beat that this year!” said Lazicki. According to Lazicki, the campaign had already raised close to $1 million before August 24. Staff had been selling A&W merchandise across the country in order to prepare for the event. On August 24 in Vermilion, people also had the opportunity to donate by purchasing $1, $2, or $5 cut outs, as well as having $2 from ever y Teen Burger sold go towards supporting MS. A Silent Auction was held, and a photo booth and clas-
sic cars provided conversation pieces for the public. The national campaign has raised $9 million in the past, and now has Canadian Women’s National Soccer Team Captain Christine Sinclair as an Ambassador. The two-time Olympic Bronze medalist’s mother, Sandi, lives with MS, giving Sinclair her passionate background for the cause. “We would like to thank the community, volunteers, and businesses for their donated silent auction items to help support MS,” said Vermilion A&W staff member, Rayann Ramirez. Dairy Learning Centre Grand Opening
Lakeland College welcomed approximately 500 community suppor ters, government and industry leaders to their Grand Opening of the new Dairy Learning Centre in Vermilion on August 22. Dean of Agricultural Sciences, Josie Van Lent emceed the event and thanked the community for their support, Van Lent also thanked special guests Alberta Minister of Advanced Education-Marlin Schmidt, Chairman of Alberta Milk -Tom Koostra, Director of Eagle Builders-Craig Haan, Lakeland College Board Chair-Darrel
Howell, Lakeland College President-Alice Wainwright-Stewart, former Premier-Ed Stelmach, Mayor-Bruce MacDuff, and County of Vermilion River Reeve-Daryl Watt. “We look forward to the opportunities this brings,” said Van Lent, who noted that it would host students from Ontario to British Columbia in September. M ar lin S c hm i d t , t he M ini ster of Advanced Education, was excited to learn that Alberta produces 650 million litres of milk per year and said, “This facility is amazing; a really exciting advance, the dairy industry is very important to Alberta.”

The total cost of the facility was $9.5 million, of which, $3,467,500 was federally funded. The 46,600 square foot building holds both robotic and parlour milking systems as well as automatic feeding, and energy efficient touches including a skylight. The barn build took five months to complete. On behalf of Eagle Builders, Craig Haan said that they would like to give back to an industry that has supported them. He went on to announce a $100,000 perpetual scholarship to a student leader of the Dairy Learning Centre. The scholarship will have $4,000 annually being
given through a rigorous application and interview process to a student applying to manage the Lakeland College Dairy Learning Centre. Lakeland College was extremely grateful to Alberta Milk for allowing them additional quota, allowing them to double their herd and increase students, a gift value equivalent to $5 million. “This is certainly a momentous occasion for us at Lakeland College. When I look at the generosity of those who enabled this facility, it’s mind boggling,” said Lakeland College President, Alice Wainwright-Stewart.

Lakeland College To Fill Oil And Gas Industry Void

(Lloydminster, Alta.) – Fuelled by innovation, Lakeland College’s petroleum management diploma program is the only one of its kind in Alberta. M ad e possible through industr y partnerships, this two-year petroleum management diploma program equips industry professionals with the necessary skills to work safely and transition into a managerial role within the oil and gas sector. “One of the most pressing industry gaps is the training of plant and field operators to transition them into a managerial role in their respec tive companies,” says Ben Sey, dean, School of Energy at Lakeland. “With the economic downturn, most compa-
nies have a need for training their managers to be highly efficient and through key partnerships, Lakeland is filling this void through this diploma program.” The program consists of 10 threecredit courses hosted at Olds College and at various Keyera Corp. plant sites in Edmonton and Fort Saskatchewan. Each course is comprised of 16 hours of in- class instruction delivered by high caliber educators who are industry experts and 24 hours of pre-course work. “Many managers have benefitted from this program and attest to the practical skills they’ve gained,” says Sey. “This program is also vital in equipping mid- to senior-level managers in the oil and gas industry to be environmentally
responsible and compliant with regulations in their roles.” There are various admission routes available to students, with the potential to fast track the first year of this twoyear diploma program by using prior experience and education. To qualify for the fast track option, applicants must have at least one of the following: completed one of several Lakeland College energy programs; a university degree in energy or environmental sciences; or possess a journeyperson trade ticket. Other petroleum-related programs will be considered. Applicants who do not qualify for the fast track option will be enrolled in the online Competency Management and D eve l o p m e n t S y s te m (C M DS) fo r comprehensive training prior to taking

Well there we have it, the summer holidays are coming to a close once again. I don’t know if ever yone else has found the summer to go quicker than a fly at the end of a frogs tongue as I did, but this summer seemed to have disappeared. Each year I keep

saying I am going to explore Alberta and each year it seems the time slips away before I have a chance to even think about it let alone do it. The time I could have taken as a holiday was just used to look after Jason; I’m not complaining though, I would much rather make sure he is back to good health then galloping all over Alberta. We will take the time on days off to eventually go sightseeing, I hope. One thing about having a close call is it
certainly opens your eyes to what is more important in life. In just over a week the children of our communities will be excitedly hurrying off to their first day of school. I think it is important to remind everyone, including myself, to slow down and keep all eyes open and on the roads for our children, they often let their excitement take over their knowledge of the road safet y rules and common sense.
Remember always slow down in the school zones and stop when the lights on the buses are flashing and don’t text and drive. It only takes a split second for a child to pop out in front of you no matter what age they are; sometimes the teenagers do it more than the younger children. Let’s all make this school year a safe one for all our children. The Vermilion Voice is wishing all the children returning to school a wonderful and safe school year.

Taylor was reported missing August 25, 2017 from a residence in Lloydminster. Taylor was last seen at the residence August 24, 2017 morning and has yet to return. Sometimes in life we have to deal with people that feel they are truly entitled. If fact the self esteem of the entitled is often so high and so large that they consider themselves to better and smarter than those around them. They actually are not able to clearly see themselves as others do or as they really are. They may be young, but they know it all. They are users of people, and therefore people in their life must provide some benefit to them in order to be considered worthy to listen too or acknowledge. They are experts at the art of rudeness. If things do not go their way, there will be hell to pay, hissy fits, nasty e-mails and derogatory gossip. They wrongly see that they are due special treatment that others are not worthy of. They are narcissistic in nature, frequently taking selfies for social media posts and are busy working out at the gym. Some of the entitled are so self important that they are busy developing their personal brand through social media. Part of their value is often tied to how much money they make, how many likes they have on social media, the brand of clothing they wear and or course the home, vehicle, travel and other luxuries that they are entitled to.

They feel that they are entitled to a certain wage and often refuse to work, even when unemployed, unless the salary matches what their inflated self esteem feels entitled to. In the work place they feel entitled to taking as much time as possible off their job to help balance their work, family and social schedule. The entitled often do not understand the concept of teamwork and will not reciprocate help and support to other team members in a work place or family, unless there is a benefit for them. When a work schedule conflicts with their personal life, or they are confronted with a performance review their supervisor may quickly find themselves accused of bullying behavior and the victim of insults and temper tantrum drama. The entitled find it very difficult to admit their mistakes and their short comings, often blaming other people. The entitled have no problem speaking their mind and are quick to bash anyone on social media that does not meet their standards or causes them perceived inconvenience. Specialists in human resource management caution to carefully screen prospective employees or board members for entitlement issues. The entitled also make lousy friends and are bad marriage material. Researcher’s site that the largest percentage of the entitled are found in the millennial generation born from 1980 – 2000, but entitlement is not exclusive to this
generation. This personality defect is found equally across Canada and the United States. One wonders how did this happen? Psychologists point to a shift of focus on creating strong self esteem in children during this time period as the cause of the problem. Events such as everyone on the sports teams being awarded a trophy, stole from these youth: the important lessons of working hard together to achieve something that is not about self, and the reality of being losers together to realize where the bar is set and the hard work needed for success. Somewhere in the child rearing process they failed to learn that they are not special. (Sorry to burst any bubbles.) They also missed out understanding the value and respect of all people. It is better to tell your child that you love them than to tell them that they are special. It turned out that for many, this increase in self esteem helped young people to have the confidence to nail the job during the interview process, or go after what they wanted in life, but it did nothing to help them keep the job in a work environment that counts on team work, building strong relationships and rewarding real performance. The entitled also suffer in the relationship department, lacking the team skills, and the ability to see beyond their own needs that are so important for a successful marriage. The entitled often face disillusionment, for being told that they are special, that they
can have it all and they deserve it. This collision course with the reality that, they are not special frequently causes job loss, marriage breakdown, broken relationships, the inability to establish an intimate relationship, anxiety, unhappiness, drama, disappointment in life and a reoccurring loop of distress. This is strongly contrasted with the mavericks that founded our country and the later generations that were community builders. These people were not told that they were special, and no one was concerned about their self esteem or confidence level. They were not afraid of hard work, and the meager money that they made all went to make life better for their family. They were proud of their starter homes, and their children were to be seen and not heard. They knew the value of team work and got together to build each other’s barns and homes and to quilt each other’s quilts. They knew how to build strong relationships; they were grateful and giving of what little they had. Together they build hospitals, schools, churches, businesses and communities where none existed. They were humble and always ready to lend a hand. This generation had no sense of entitlement, they taught the value of hard work and relationships, there was only one trophy for the winning team ... and they raised the lowest percentage of entitled children.

watching it. Kids being young and not yet displaying the grasp of all the mechanics of the natural phenomena in our world, it was an interesting running conversation as I managed to impress with an ability to take two cardboard tubes, wax paper, duct tape, rubber bands, and tin foil to craft a suitable contraption without instructions or even breaking sentence. ited word of ‘Cool’ offered as my youngest examined the outcome, we went out on the deck and seemed to be all set looking at the tiny circle of light on wax paper. In the end, the duration of the occasion and the contraption were somewhat less than spectacular…pretty hard to impress minds that have grown up with all the Internet has to offer when a few fast moving clouds basically dimmed the Sun to the same degree as the Moon was doing concurrently. Even though we had been watching coverage of the totality together on TV prior, a few metaphorical shrugs and they were off with Barbie’s and what have you, their memories of celestial doings no more changed than that fast moving cloud shadow across the grass on the back lawn. In the end that is all it really is…time, knowledge and where you are when something happens, big or small, making all the difference in how you view it. My first eclipse experience was through a couple of small pieces of welding glass from the side of a ball diamond between games at the Kitscoty ball tournament, my elementary school teammates taking turns with me to look at a black bite out of the Sun on a scorching hot day. Why it is that you can remember certain things like that in detail so many years later…including the blistering sunburn I got that same day…is one of the strange things about memory. I’m not sure my kids would have quite the same instinct now of mentally
pressing ‘record’ as events happen… through their eyes the world is totally different. They would look first for their phone or tablet then after the fact be laughing as they replayed it over and over again. Moments in time like that have never existed in the same context for them…never growing up prior to even the record, pause, and rewind buttons of a VCR. I wonder myself now if I appreciate a memory better if it is by recall alone or something I can call up from a disc or hard drive. Occasionally now have to catch myself from reaching for the smartphone like they do and just experience…trusting senses and synapses to record it best. In the meantime unless we humans do come up with some advanced virtual equivalent (think Star Trek holodeck), hoping to still be around with my adult children to find out when the next big dark shadow from the Moon comes around in August 2044. If I ask for the duct tape and rubber bands again, I hope they remember to laugh.

Starting on Canada’s west coast, and finishing on Canada’s east coast, this event is an epic journey of over 7,000 km. National cyclists bike from coast to coast along a well-planned route, joined by hundreds of local community cyclists for shorter regional and local rides. The route visits most of Canada’s 17 pediatric cancer centers the event supports through its

Now in its 10th year, the 2017 event will be an emotional and inspirational adventure beginning in Vancouver on September 6, and complete in Halifax 18 memorable days later on September 23. At the start and end of each day the team of cyclists and volunteers will participate in local events where the community will share inspiring stories of strength and hope that will give our cyclists an extra boost of energy to endure another grueling
day on their bikes. Together, we will raise millions of dollars on behalf of charities that improve the quality of life for children, and their families, living with and beyond cancer. Our destination – beyond cancer! Funds raised will be directed to both national initiatives in support of childhood oncology programs, as well as, to local and community programs through pediatric oncology hospitals and centers across the country. The event is conducted by the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foun-

Founder of ‘1 Kid Making A Difference,’ 16-year-old Taylor DeVos, is keen to launch a ‘K.I.D.S. Making A Difference Club’ in Vermilion. Originally from Saskatchewan, and having spent the past few years in Fort St. John, British Columbia, DeVos is thrilled to be back in a small town, and to see what areas she can impact locally and around the world. In 2010, at almost 10-years-old, while
watching an advertisement on how children in developing countries live, DeVos became compelled to make a difference. She soon began sponsoring Mesline, a young girl from Haiti, and continues to exchange letters with her. Her organization has led her to public speaking events such as We Day in Saskatoon where she was able to share the stage with the likes of Magic Johnson, Martin Luther King III, as well as Craig and Marc Kielburger. In 2016, Taylor accompanied World Vision to Haiti where she was able to meet her sponsor child, Mesline, as well as several of the school children whom she had helped to make a difference for. “Without a doubt, if we did not have this Secondary School that you have constructed for us, we as students would be leading a totally unproductive existence without any real life or any certain future,” said Johnky Pierre, Student of Jacques Roumain Secondary School. Throughout the past few years, DeVos has received the Governor General’s Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, City of Fort St. John’s Youth of the Year award in 2015, and was runner up in the TED X TEEN’s International ‘The Next Big Thing’ competition. Now, DeVos is having ‘1 Kid Making A Difference’ partner with World Vision to continue helping girls receive access to education in Mposa, Malawi, Africa.
Her assistance in this area has already helped sponsor two local students to attend college; provided school supplies, textbooks, art supplies, and sports equipment; as well as set up “mother groups” to care for teenage girls, and build sanitation facilities that cater to girls who have started menstruation in 11 area schools. Celebrating youth entrepreneurs, Community Futures Lakeland hosted a Biz Kids barbeque and trade fair at the Credit Union parking lot in Vermilion on August 24. According to Community Futures Lloydminster and Region’s General Manager, Phyllis Maki, the Biz Kids pro gram has now c ome full c irc le having one of their Biz Kids return as a mentor. The program began in Bonnyville, and now includes Lloydminster, Vermilion, and Wainwright participants. Maki has been with the program since its inception in 2001, and said, “ Now it is absolutely phenomenal; it’s incredible what the children have done.” She also mentioned that many of the youth have chosen to donate part or occasionally all of their proceeds within the community. “When you see that, it gives you faith that we can keep our small communities going,” said Maki. Forty-nine area youth participated
this year, and upwards of 15 showcased their business ventures varying from entertainment and accessories to baking and refreshments, bath and body products, fresh produce, and gun cleaning services. Proceeds from the barbeque went to support next year’s Biz Kids program. “They taught me about finance and marketing which is good to know,” said 17-year-old Jorah Morritt who plans to open a bakery in Vermilion in the future. Community Futures Representative, Connie Brooks said that the program has been amazing; giving the children valuable knowledge and experience. She noted the growth of second-year participant, Nathan James, who had learned his margins and mark up for his ‘Icycle Bicycle’ business. “The bike and freezers cost $4,000, and we have paid back $3,000 so far. This year has been pretty good; we’ve expanded a lot, and we are more experienced so we can do a lot more,” said 12-year-old Nathan James who added that they started with eight ice cream flavours and now have 15.
His sister Laura often accompanies Nathan, and they are saving up for cars and university and plan later to sell the business to their younger brother, Kessler. See more on page 17

Safety Is Important Both On And Off The Bus At t h e b e g i n n i n g o f e a c h n ew school year, the majority of parents watch their children as they get on their school bus in the morning. But as the days and weeks go by and everyone settles into a routine, we become less alert, pay less attention and are more preoccupied by our own preparations for the day. Perhaps you have already talked to your children about the rules to follow when in the proximit y of a school bus, but it is also imperative to tell them about the rules to follow when actually on the bus. First of all it ’s impor tant, when possible, for children to have plenty
of time to get to the bus stop without having to rush. The stress of being late is the cause of many accidents. I m p r e s s u p o n yo u r c h i l d r e n t h e impor tance of being visible to the bus driver at all times. If they have to cross the road in front of the bus, children should always make sure of being several feet away from the bus so the driver can see them. Lastly, all the children must comply with the rules of the driver who is the person responsible for safety on board the bus. As soon as they get on the bus, children must go directly to their seats. They must never stand up for
any reason before the bus comes to a complete stop and there should be no quarrelling, throwing of objects, yelling, etc., which could distract the driver while the bus is moving. Safety on board the school bus is ever yone’s business. By following the rules of behaviour as outlined above, children will be sure of respecting their driver, each other and arriving at their destination safe and sound. School Bus Safety Tips - Hold the handrail going up and down the stairwell so you don't trip. - Find a seat and sit down as soon as you're on the bus. - Be courteous and respectful to your driver. Submitted St. Jerome’s Catholic Sc hool is extremely excited to welcome five new teachers to our staff this year. Four of our new staff members have strong connections with our school already and it is thrilling to have them join our team. Now it is time to meet our new teaching staff. Arianne Lewin is thrilled to be joining the Spartan team! This will be her first year teaching at St. Jerome’s and also her first year teaching Kindergarten. She is excited to be teaching Kindergarten because of all the exploring, learning and fun her and her students will get to have. Arianne has a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Bachelor of Education Degree both from the University of Alberta. She graduated in December of 2016 and took a Grade 1 position in Cold Lake for the remainder of the school year. She loves to learn and she can’t wait to

Regional Light Horse 4-H Camp

The Lakeland Longriders Light Horse 4-H Club from the Bonnyville District hosted the Regional Light Horse 4-H Camp at the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds from August 23 - 26. Forty out of 43 registered members were able to at tend the camp and participated in a wide range of events throughout the week. Members travelled from Fort McMurray, Wainwright, Marwayne, Kitscoty, Vermilion, Bonnyville, Cold Lake, and St. Paul.
Opening ceremonies were followed by cattle work, ground work, reigning, jumping, trail, a gymkhana, drill events, and closing ceremonies. Participants also had the opportunity to try photography, wood-burning, archer y, and Horse 101, 102, 103, and 104 to give the horses a break throughout the day. Prizes were given for individual stall cleaning, individual stall decorating, and club stall decorating. “Ever yone got to experience new things and have a lot of fun,” said coordinator, Tracy Bercier.

Kuk Sool Won First Black Belt Promotion
Kuk Sool Won Vermilion is pleased to announce the promotion of Sean Meier to first Degree Black Belt! Sean is the first student Kuk Sool WonTM Vermilion has had the pleasure of teaching all the way from White belt – Black belt. His promotion took place Saturday, August 19. “I have taught many students over the years who have been promoted to Black belt but Sean is officially my first Black Belt, I am very proud of his achievement and am looking forward to promoting the other students who are on their way to this coveted goal,” said Morgan Freeman, school owner, and 3rd Degree Black Belt Instructor. Meier first started back in 2012 when the
school first opened its doors, says Freeman. The journey from White belt to Black belt typically takes five years, in Kuk Sool WonTM. Once promoted to Dahn Bo Nim (Black Brown Belt) the testing for Black Belt begins and takes two solid years of constant testing. The testing procedure not only tests his knowledge of forms and techniques but also his martial spirit. The syllabus also prepares the student by teaching them how to teach, for when they wish to open their own school. Sean has put in five years of vigorous training and buckets of sweat! He travelled to Calgary for seminar’s and trained under the watchful eye of Master Sung Jin Suh, 9th Degree Black Belt, who decided to promote Sean to his new rank on Saturday, August 19.
We asked Meier why he started Kuk Sool Won and he said “Before I chose Kuk Sool Won, I researched various styles of martial arts. Of all of them, I determined that Kuk Sool Won would be the most challenging. That, and the fact that you get a lot of specialized weapons training later on. I have a life-long commitment to acquiring as much wisdom and new skills as possible. Kuk Sool filled a void that I needed with my active lifestyle, and it also made me feel like I was a part of the Kuk Sool family, with people that have common interests.” Meier also went on to say what encouraged him to stay with Kuk Sool. “I have persevered with Kuk Sool through the highs and lows since I began training in 2012 while staying positive and keeping motivated. A highlight just
happened at the Calgary WKSA event weekend, where I was promoted. I became the first Albertan to be promoted to WKSA Black Belt by Master Sung Jin, the second highest ranking Master in the world! I was very humbled by being in the presence of such greatness, as well as my instructor and all the other senior ranking members. I can hardly wait until the next WKSA event!” said Meier. When asked what his plans for the future are Meier said, “Eventually, I would like to open my own Kuk Sool Won training facility; I aspire to one day be as skilled as my instructor and hopefully become a Master. I recommend Kuk Sool Won to anyone that is looking for a challenge and an excellent way to get in good shape. Anything is possible when you believe in yourself!”

Lakeland Team Cattle Penning

The Lakeland Team Cattle Penning Association (LTCPA) hosted their last two sanctioned events of the season at the Lakeland College Arena in Vermilion from August 26 - 27. Approximately 50 riders participated with some entering multiple times to have 125 teams each day. Chadrick Carley who
is in his second year competing in the sport, travelled from North Battleford for the event. “I love the team penning family. We all root for each other, and every night, we sit by a fire and enjoy pot luck meals,” said Carley. The LTCPA Finals will be held in Cold Lake in September.
