Hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the Mannville Agricultural Fair and Parade on August 19. A pancake breakfast was hosted by the Mannville Historical Society and the parade was organized by MMI FCSS. Children were thrilled to collect c andy and watc h the collec tion of floats pass by. Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed an antique tractor show, bench fair, petting zoo, country market, as well as face painting and ‘Sprinkles the Clown’.
The afternoon was filled with the oppor tunities to tr y 1Up Mobile G a m i n g , B a k i n g R o b o t s C h i c ke n Bingo, or watch the Mannville Fire Depar tment Demonstration. 4-H Hosted Carnival Games, and visi tors were drawn to the peddle tractor pulls and hot wheel races, as well as the archery demonstration and target range. A roast beef supper hosted by the Mannville Historical Society finished off the fun summer day, and guests enjoyed live entertainment by the ‘Off Ramp Boys’. See more pictures on page 2.

2nd Annual Feast On The Farm
Celebrating their agricultural roots and student-led activities, Lakeland College hosted the 2 nd Annual Feast O n T h e Far m at t h e B ar r Far m in Vermilion on August 19. Approximately 250 communit y members gathered outdoors to enjoy an evening of fine dining and musical entertainment. “We have an interdependent relat i o n s h i p w i t h t h e c o m m u n i t y, a n d being involved is a big part of what we
do. We would like to thank our sponsors and industry partners,” said Geoff Brown, Lakeland College’s Associate Dean of Agricultural Science. Brown went on to say that Lakeland College has grown in a lot of different areas including the heavy oil program, human services, university transfers, school of business, interior design, trades, and the fire school. Lakeland College President, Alice Wainwright-Stewart said that the original owner of the property where the event was held, William Barr, was

We live our lives each day never really

When the STARS me d i c s walked into the room, I can remember saying to my Mom, it’s not much, but I am certainly glad I buy those STARS calendars when they are for sale. I will never take it for granted that they will always be there when we need them, I will forever buy calendars when they are available.

The creamy fruit salad would also be nice served at a tea with healthy muffins and cheese. This recipe serves 6 – 8, and it can be cut in half or doubled with good results. When I studied nutrition at the University of Alberta several decades ago, oranges were famous for their high content of Vitamin C, today scientists now know that in addition to being an excellent source of vitamin C, oranges are even more amazing with over 170 different phytonutrients, in excess of 60 flavonoids and an abundance of beneficial anti-oxidants. Oranges, apples and bananas all contain beneficial fiber. Bananas, especially ones that are a little on the green side, contain natural
prebotics that help us absorb nutrients, such as calcium, by producing digestive enzymes. A banana and a dairy product are a good combination to eat together for increased protection from ulcers and increased calcium absorption. Bananas are a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and potassium. Apples are shown to help regulate blood sugar, to reduce fat in the blood, aid in weight loss and help cleanse the body of toxins. The malic acid in apples has the ability to bind to lead and aluminum toxins, helping to flush them out. The redder the skin of the apple the more disease fighting antioxidants that are present. Apples, oranges and bananas are best eaten raw for the greatest benefit of all the nutrients, making this salad a great way to enjoy a variety of fresh fruits and multitude of nutrients. September 10, was declared World Suicide Prevention Day, and October 6, was declared World Cerebral Palsy Day.
2 large bananas or 3 small 2 apples 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup whipping cream Combine the mayonnaise and the whipping cream for the dressing. Peel, section and chop the oranges. Core and dice the apple with the skin on, unless the skin is very tough. In a bowl stir together the oranges, apples and dressing. Slice the banana and gently stir into the fruit mixture. This can be served right away, or it can be made several hours ahead and stored in the refrigerator. You can also omit the mayonnaise and whip 3/4 cup of whipping cream with 2 tablespoons of sugar for the dressing. This variation made it a total dessert, full of antioxidants and beneficial nutrients. If you are intolerant or allergic to dairy, just substitute the whipped cream for cool whip.

I apologize for the missed c olumn last week folks, but I took a week’s holiday using the remaining vacation leave I have left before I retire on September 1st, 17 sleeps left as I write this. It was kind of like a prewarm up to the retirement life, got a lot done but was surprised on how fast a week passed by, I also made it out to the cabin to set up tree stands, blinds and trail cameras. I also realized I need a bigger truck, or an improvised puppy hauler, I only brought half the herd with me, Miss Oohohh and Sir Mukluk which the latter filled most of my extended cab of the truck. Miss Oohohh wasn’t too happy about that, I built a special bed for her back there before the pups were born, now the pup fills up the entire bed, and Miss Oohohh doesn’t have a spot to lay down. She did get the passenger seat all to herself, and a window rolled down half way to stick her nose out, but she couldn’t lay down, which wasn’t bad on the trip there, but I worked them hard, and she was tired on the trip back. They got to run over 15 miles during the day long adventure, which involved many stops at any water hole for a cool down swim, I also carried a couple

When my family and I were visiting relatives d own in Calgar y a c ouple weeks ago it was interesting observing the moisture c hange gradually as we drove the 3 hours south. As we left our yard it was mostly overcast and rainy, with perpetual puddles in our tree shaded driveway that have yet to dry out even once since spring. Whereas we arrived on the outskirts east of Calgary to fields

They had a great time and enjoyed the running; I was pleasantly surprised with Sir Mukluk, at just over seven months he already towers over Miss Oohohh, and looks like a clumsy clown. But he surprised me with his speed and endurance for a big puppy, he could even outrun Miss Oohohh at times, she was always my best runner, but now she has upcoming youngsters to compete with. Sir Mukluk is known as a “giant woolly” in the Alaskan malamute circle, simply meaning he is bigger than the norm and has a long woolly coat, I thought he would overheat and we stopped at all the ice cold water holes. Some of these springs that feed these water holes come straight up out of the ground, so the water is cold. However, it didn’t seem that his long woolly coat didn’t hinder him at all and in fact when damp actually helped him stay cool longer. They did very well stayed with the vehicles and didn’t stray, although they were very energetic they were beat and “napped’ a lot that evening and all the next day. It was nice to have the week at home…lots of bonding time with the wife and pups…Roxanne, my wife, had the week off also, we went to the city on one of those days but other than that I just puttered around the home. The Queen Esther Chapter of the Order the Eastern Star welcomed top officers to the Mason Star Hall in Vermilion on August 15. Alberta Worthy Grand Matron Deb Buxton, Alberta Worthy Grand Patron Hal Welke, and Saskatchewan Worthy Grand Matron Colleen Hozack were greeted with coffee and refreshments by local members, as well as distant members who travelled for the occasion. The international organization has a half millio n mem ber s (men an d women) that volunteer their time in over 20 countries. The Eastern Star’s official charity is ser vice dogs, but they also support Alzheimer’s, caregiver s, and rotate bet ween cystic fibrosis, autism, juvenile diabetes, and asthma. Each of the 29 Alberta chapters (almost 1,800 members) can choose to support other local needs. The Queen Esther Chapter in Vermilion has donated to the Rotary Club, the Vermilion Health Centre,
likely to overdoing it all at one time, now if I can dig a wheelbarrow full and get them in the cold storage for winter, I will be most happy. It didn’t take long to go through that first pail, we had fresh garden taters for supper, next morning, lunch, supper again and repeat, I love those tater gems, perfect food! In fact just yesterday we dug part of another hill and the wife made a huge bowl of the best potato salad you can enjoy, sorry to say I didn’t share with pups, perhaps a little pay back for un-authorized digging. Summer for most is passing quickly, and soon September will be upon us, September is one of my favourite months and a lot of years September is much nicer outdoors than August. If you’re one of those that think summer ends with August, you better get out there and enjoy. When The Smoke Clears As a youth in school September meant the end of summer’s adventures, as an adult September meant the beginning of many autumn adventures, in my retirement maybe September could just be the transition month between summer and autumn adventures.

All depends on where you are when thoughts on Alberta climate cross your mind…a 3 hour trip could change your mind once and then right back again. Or something to the effect of it changing in 5 minutes. We’ve obviously been more fortunate on the moisture front so it has been a pretty good summer on the growing things front so far up here. Our garden that was such a crash course in planting earlier this spring just to get in is now lush and tall, populating our table with veggies. I must really be determined to enjoy it this year because we planted more beets, I never used to like or eat them, and I actually admitted to liking the first batch that made the table. All I can say is…never say never. As a kid I can’t say I was always thrilled to get dragged out to pick all the peas, beans, corn and the like.

and it went by as quick as a weekend… I think I will handle the retirement just fine; I was busy the entire time yet felt like I didn’t get anything done, got the yard looking great but it all grew back looking the same as when I started. I Spent a little time in my garden tending to my delectable potatoes, mouthwatering, dreaming of being the first… Hey wait a minute why does there look like a bald spot in the lush potato plants. Doh, looks like I won’t be the first to harvest and taste the morsels, one or more of the pups decided they would have that prestige, they got about a quarter of that hill, and the telltale tooth and paw marks told the story. Of course, all the pups looked innocent and had no idea what I was talking about…but were ever so eager to help me dig the rest of the hill for survivors, I was pleasantly surprised to see nice big red potatoes. I managed to save most of the hill, surrendered several damaged ones to the pups, of course who all acted like they never these potato things before, and decided to play…see who can throw this tater thing the highest… I am going to have a bumper crop again this year, that is if I can keep the mystery diggers out of the garden, it will be one of the first jobs I undertake with my retirement, a job I will take my time at. I have always found digging potatoes back breaking work, but it was most

We had a pretty big family and a big garden ever y year. The rows never quite seemed to end once you started picking …those hollow echoing thuds of the first few pea pods that bounced ominously at the bottom of your 5 gallon pail making your arms ache before you really even began. Filling the pail was just the beginning…there was always hoping something was worth watching on TV to keep your mind off all the shelling you were soon about to do. Thankfully tonight…there was a football game on which did the job. A garden was a lot of work then but necessary… many hungry mouths around (sometimes the peas never quite made it to the pail) and a grocery store wasn’t exactly across the street. Somewhere along the line…through all the planting and watering seeds, pulling and hoeing weeds…some dirt got under the fingernails to stay because no one in our household ever seems to mind
doing any of that work now. A full larder each winter sure doesn’t hurt. A part of it too is because there was always an aspect of tagging along learning things and being with our parents… as all of them were avid gardeners but each in different ways. It seems to have been successfully passed on… but perhaps because the scale of our garden doesn’t seem to daunt our kids just yet, warnings of expanding it again to meet the logistics of their growing appetites notwithstanding. The scale of bounty from other external sources this summer might do it though. The garage and kitchen have turned into a warehouse lately for boxes of apples, bags of potatoes, pails of cherries, packs of raspberries and saskatoons. I can’t take the credit for it getting all here…but I’ve spent more time up in the tops of trees lately than a man born in the Year of the Monkey should care to admit.

Come By The Hills Music Festival
The Come By The Hills 7th Annual music festival returned to the beautiful Mistahiya setting on August 18 and 19. Friday’s lineup included Caleb Hart, Paul Reddick, Aaron Goodvin then was followed by a Bonfire Jam Session. Caleb Hart grew up in the twin island nation of Trinidad and Tobago but now calls Canada his home. He performed with a wide variety of music including Gospel, Soul, Pop, Rock, Calypso and Raggae. Paul Red dic k has released four albums, with two nominated for a Juno award. He has gone on to earn a few Maple Blues Award for Songwriter of the Year. Aaron Goodvin who is from Spirit River, Alberta is a Canadian Country Music Award Nominee. His self-titled
debut album has been at the top of the Canadian Country Music sales charts for months. His performance on August 18 had many up and dancing the night away. August 19 featured The Awesomehots, The Raven & The Fox for the morning shows and the afternoon followed with Shady Mavis, Nancy Laberge, Ken Stead, The Rooster Davis Group and Sweet Alibi. The Awesomehots are from Whiskeytown, Alberta and perform with even invented musical instruments. The Raven & The Fox are considered to be folk pop music with sultry vocals and acoustic riffs. Shady Mavis band are an acoustic trio made up of Don Gammie, Elaine Somerfield, and John Whittington. They play tunes of folk, country, and bluegrass.
Nancy Laberge is a Calgary-based singer/songwriter with a new album out called ‘When We Were Friends.’ Ken Stead has his first full-length album out ‘Fear Has No Place Here.’ He has played at many folk festivals in Western Canada full of artistic output. The Rooster Davis Group performed a variety of music with their own influences including blues, funk, jazz, country, and rock. Rooster Davis has toured for seven years in Canada and the U.S. and has opened for big names like Alan Jackson, LeAnn Rimes, Keith Urban. Sweet Alibi has been touring for several years as a Roots/Pop group. This band hails from Winnipeg and is made up of Jess Rae, Amber Rose, and Michelle Anderson. In an effort to help save lives, Canadian Blood Services hosted a mobile blood donor clinic at the Lakeland College Gymnasium in Vermilion on August 16. Stuart Kunaman, a firefighter student from Saskatoon, volunteered to donate one pint of blood at the August 16 clinic. Having donated in the past he felt it was a good cause. “People need blood, and it’s an opportunity to give,” said donor, Kunaman. According to Canadian Blood Services, they have upped their stops in Vermilion from three previously, to four in 2017. Previous to August 16, they had received 52 new donors in Vermilion throughout 2017. Their target was to collect 120 units of blood, and they were happy to report receiving 142 units on August 16. “ We can’t say enough about how thankful we are to the blood donors in Vermilion. We really appreciate your support. Submitted The 2017 Biz Kids program is now coming to a close, and that means that it’s time to celebrate the accomplishments of our 49 participants across 5 communities. For those who are unfamiliar with the Biz Kids program, it is a youth program that typically targets kids between the ages of 10 and 16. These kids take part in a series of workshops where they learn about entrepreneurship, finance, accounting, marketing, as well as some basic business planning. These youth are then paired with a mentor from within their community to help provide them with guidance throughout their business ownership. The kids then have an opportunity to earn up to $100 in seed capital to start their business. Their eligibility is determined based on elements of financial need, as well as the ability to pitch their need in front of a panel of program representatives. The kids then apply for business licenses, and operate their businesses throughout the summer months of July and August. Check-ins are held twice throughout the span of the summer to evaluate progress and address any ongoing concerns. Many of the 2017 participants

Aging Population Poses Problem For Alberta Communities

According to the Alberta Government, about one in five Albertans will be a senior in the next 15 years. As of March 2011, there were about 410,000 seniors in Alberta but by 2031, when the last of the baby boomers reach 65 years of age, it is projected that there will be more than 923,000 seniors. It is predicted that within 10 years between the Town and County of Vermilion River, there will be 4,000 individuals in our community who will be 65 years of
age or older. If just 10% of those who live in the county need seniors’ housing, 400 rooms will be required. The Vermilion & District Housing Foundation (VDHF) is addressing this issue through their modernization project of the Vermilion Valley Lodge. The Vermilion Valley Lodge is critical infrastructure for the community by providing seniors with safe, affordable, and comfortable housing for those who can no longer manage in their own homes. The project is modernizing 50 lodge rooms so they are larger, have walk-in
showers and other modern-day conveniences such as added and upgraded bathing rooms, a larger commercial kitchen and dining room, and other spaces to increase staff efficiency and comfort. The lodge will have 124 suites in total. The modernized infrastructure is essential for providing seniors housing that follows current standards. This project is only the first step to address the increasing problem of an aging population. After the completion of the project, VDHF would like to continue to address the issue by expanding and

Crowds roared at the races and entertainment at the Lloydminster Exhibition grounds during the 25 th Annual Denham’s Ram Tough CPCA Finals held from August 16 – 20. Celebrations began August 15, as the Denim and Diamonds Silver Anniversary Gala was held at the Stockade Convention Center. A live and silent auction was held and guests had the opportunity to meet drivers and celebrate great racing memories over a prime rib dinner. Wagon Week drew crowds of people to the border city for various pancake breakfasts, trick riding competitions, the Midlite Rocky Riders flag carriers, a Spirit Horse Native Princess act for this year’s Crazy Cowgirl Liberty Act,

Settling back into drills, the 2017 Marauders held their first day of Football Camp at J.R. Robson School in Vermilion on August 14. The two-week camp will focus on getting players conditioned and football ready. “We want to get the players enjoying football and keep them safe while
learning a contact sport. We are looking forward to having a young team that can do some rebuilding this year, and I think we will have a lot of fun,” said head coach, Lorne Maier. Success At Senior Games

Mannville’s Ed Storch earned four medals at the Calgary 55 Plus 2017 Provincial Championships from August 10 – 11 at the Glenmore Athletic Park. Storch earned three gold medals for the 100m, 200m, and 800m races, as well as a silver medal for the 4 x 100 relay helping out team Edmonton. According to Storch, the 55 Plus Senior Games offer a range of mental and physical competition and provide fabulous social gatherings. The Calgary event included baseball, hockey, track, and swimming, while Grand Prairie is set to host events including card playing, horseshoes, and crafts. “If we qualify for provincials, we have the possibility of being selected to go to Nationals in St. John’s next year,” said Storch who currently holds three provin-

cial records for the 100m and 200m in the over 65 category, as well as for the 100m in the over 70 category. Storch gets his determination from his mother who competed in javelin winning a silver medal at age 101. “Both genetics and desire have something to do with it. To avoid becoming decrepit, I train and compete with myself, and the people I meet make it worthwhile,” said Storch. When not competing, Storch spends his time crafting knives, and is nearing 3,000 in lifetime production. His handiwork can be viewed on Instagram @ storchknives.
