Hockey Champs Return After 50 Years

There were hugs all around as the 19 67 Ver mili o n K ins m en Po nt iac s celebrated their 50-year reunion at the Pomeroy on July 29. An original jersey, trophy, and blanket decorated the room, and team members were both thrilled and grateful to see so many of their friends. Manager Bud Baddock was in attendance and brought his championship jacket. Players had each received a similar corduroy jacket 50 years ago. “It was my favourite jacket in my life; it’s like it was made for me,” said Lorne Wasylishen. “There are a couple of guys closets I wouldn’t mind seeing because I know they would have taken good care of the old uniforms and jackets really well. In those days, they were made stylish for teams and sponsored by local companies. A lot of them were

worn right out because they were so nice,” said Robert MacPhee. Guests enjoyed refreshments while visiting throughout the evening, and cherished their time back in Vermilion. Reminiscing and exchanging their favourite memories brought a lot of excitement, and even a bit of emotion for some. “ Manager, Bud Baddock said, “ I enjoyed working with the youth and being involved with hockey. The team all fit in well together - we all helped each other. They were all good players, and they’re all good boys.” “ What else besides hockey could you celebrate a 50-year reunion for?” asked team captain, Ron Jones, who had won the coach’s hat in 1967. Thousands of people flooded the Vermilion Agricultural Grounds from July 27 – 29, taking in a mix of midway, agricultural shows, and entertainment. The parade kicked off the Fair with a variety of entries categorized in commercial, out of town, senior and junior organizations, comic, pioneer, antique, and decorated cars. People of all ages enjoyed watching the colourful floats pass by, most tailored to the theme celebrating 100 years of 4-H in Alberta. “I was super-duper excited for the parade,” said six-year-old David Causley. In the staggering heat, visitors then proceeded to the fair grounds, meandering through trade booths, the bench fair, food vendors, and the midway. Equipment displays, and several livestock shows were of interest to agricultural enthusiasts. The Knights of Northern Realm performed martial combat at the Vermilion Fair on July 29. “The history is incredibly interesting. The 111th Vermilion Fair ran from July 27 - 29 and according to Vermilion Ag Society president, Jay Sinclair it was another successful Fair even with the price increase for gate passes which hasn’t increased since 1982. “ The gate pass did increase this year from $5 per day to $10, and the t hre e - d ay g ate p a s s i n c rea s e d to $20 from $15, but it didn’t seem to affect our attendance, it was what we expected,” said Sinclair. As with any fair, vo lunteer s are needed to help make the fair a success, and according to Sinclair, the number of volunteers they had, was good. “There are always volunteer opportunities, but we were good this year. It always gets done, we work together, and sometimes we work late, or someone jum ps from one c ommit tee to help another committee; but like I said there are always volunteer opportunities during the Fair and we welcome a ny o n e w h o w a n t s t o vo l u n t e e r,” added Sinclair. In previous years The Vermilion Fair offered a wide array of events, shows, and displays, but this year the Ag Society also added new shows, events and food vendors to the Fair lineup.

Vermilion Fair A Success

“This year we had the Knights of the Northern Realm, the breed display s h ow fe at u r i n g p i g s , s h e e p, l o n g horned steers and different horses as well as Route 60 which is a new food vendor,” added Sinclair. The heav y draf t hor se num ber s were also up during this year’s Fair and exceeded the number of heavy draft horses within the last 10 years. “ We h a d o v e r 10 0 h e a v y d r a f t horses, and of the five - six horse hitches, four of them placed in the Calgary Stampede,” said Sinclair. Other attractions to the Vermilion Fair which is always a hit with attende e s b e s i d e s t h e c hu c k wag o n an d chariot races are the exhibit halls, trade show, and the Old MacDonald’s barn. “ T h e ex h i b i t h a l l s ar e a l ways a big attraction. There are some ver y talented people in this world. The trade show was full, and they want to come here, so that is always a good thing. The chicks hatching is always a good draw for the children; they flock to it to see them. The petting zoo at the Old MacDonald’s barn is another hit with the children as well. This year we had bunnies with new born babies, goats, ducks, kittens and a little pony.

We didn’t have puppies this year. Sinclair also added there were a lot of raffles available this year. “We had two raffles from Dewberry, the Marwayne Ag Society, the Lions, Vermilion Minor hockey and of course the Rotary holds one every year,” said Sinclair. Ac c or d ing to Sin c lair the at ten dance at the beer gardens was very good, and the crowd attending it had been very respectful. “Something different this year is we also licensed one of the bleachers on the east end of the chuckwagons and at the antique tractors,” said Sinclair. When asked what Sinclair thinks makes the Vermilion Fair a success each year he said,” I think it is the old fashioned feel and the variety of things offered. Our gate pass is affordable, and people who come here can see a lot for the value. We have nightly entertainment at the grandstand and the beer gardens. The Vermilion Fair also has a machiner y display and I have never been to another fair that has one; I think that is also a huge draw to the fair. People who come here from out of town say they can see everything from the petting zoo to chuckwagons to machinery displays and go to the

trade show all for one price and we are very proud to keep it that way.” Sinclair would like to thank all the volunteers and everyone who made the Fair such a success.

Fire In Vermilion

On July 29, at about 8 a.m. south of the Vermilion Fair Grounds main entrance smoke could be seen coming from a duplex. Volunteer firefighter Tyler Dickson from Hanna, AB was sleeping in his tent in the RV/camping area when he heard someone yelling “FIRE!” Dickson saw the smoke, retrieved a fire extinguisher from his truck, and knocked down the fire which was on the outside of a duplex. He then proceeded to use the water hose attached to the duplex and continued to put out the fire and hot spots. Vermilion Fire Department arrived shortly but the fire was already extingushed. Things could have gone much worse without Dickson’s quick response. It appeared that a small BBQ was on the deck outside and could have been the cause. egg whites until the soft peak stage. In a small bowl combine the sugar and the cornstarch and stir. Add by tablespoon to the egg whites, continuing to beat with the electric mixture, until all the sugar is added and the egg whites form stiff peaks. Add in the 1 teaspoon of vinegar and beat for 20 seconds longer. Using a spatula mound the egg white mixture on to the parchment paper, using your drawn circle as your guide line. Have the meringue a little higher on the outside and a bit lower on the inside, to create a form that will hold the whipped cream. Bake for 70 -75 minutes. Allow to cool. Beat the whipping cream, vanilla and sugar until peaks are formed. Spread on the cooled Pavlova base and cover with your favourite fruit.

I am loving summer thus far, enjoying every spare moment I can. I just sit back and take it all in, however, unfortunately, those moments are few and far between; it seems like my retirement can’t come fast enough. I have renovations, a huge dog kennel, endless summer yard work; honey do’s, and everything that seems to demand my attention now! Right now…however, I will sit in the shade by the fire pit and enjoy the outdoors every break I get. Much of what I am doing has to be done by freeze up, which will come quicker than we like so I will get things done, I have the main frame done on the big kennel now, now for the 7-foot page wire fencing itself. Due to terrain where it sits if I wanted to

keep it level and match the other kennels I had to set posts, so there will be a lot of shovelling done on one end. Actually the shovelling will be done on the entire fence. A foot or better will have to be dug on the one end tapered off to level on the opposite corner, which means the actual fence will be buried for the most part, not a bad thing as it prevents the escape artists from digging under. In fact, my plans is to take extra chain link and bury it two feet into and a foot down inside the kennel, which will make it a maximum security facility, a necessity with Alaskan Malamutes. So if I get it done now during summer while the ground is soft, what takes me a day would take a week if frozen, plus thawing fire, etc., I would rather be doing many other things, but all will be worth it when done. Like just yesterday my bowhunting buddy Blaine and |I went to move and set up a couple of tree stands, I only had two of the

It broke my heart to leave Miss Noel, but the little sweetheart came into “season” or estrus for breeding, at just seven months old, besides being a little strange, there is also a danger she may stray or run off with a coyote. The females can become moody, stubborn, and just strange, much like females of all species at certain times with the lady thingy’s going on, and that’s as far as I am going with that. Also, there’s a chance that even Sir Mukluk could breed with her as nature at that time doesn’t let them rationalize they are siblings, even a coyote can/will breed if circumstances are right. So she has to be segregated in her kennel by herself for a while when I can’t keep a constant eye on her, but when we are home she gets to run and play all day, however, she will soon reach the peak of her estrus. So I may have to get her a diaper or “season” pants to make it improbable for breeding, for health and growth reasons I don’t let the females breed until at least their third estrus, which makes them usually a year and half old. Before that they are just too young, also at a younger age, they are not yet fully developed which could lead to difficulties thru the entire process of having healthy puppies. And just this weekend I noticed that Miss Oohohh is in “proestrus” which is the first stage of season or estrus but females won’t breed during this time, so now shortly I will have two females acting weirdly. However Miss Oohohh is ready for puppy’s, and my planned unification was between her and Sir Mukluk, although he will be only eight months old he will be breeding mature for a male. I would like to see him be a little older also but Mother Nature’s plans are never predictable, so we have different bunking in the kennels right now, Mr. Donka having been “fixed” or neutered, is packing an empty change purse, and it all means nothing to

him. I don’t think it’s likely that Miss Oohohh and Sir Mukluk will have pups this go around, but when they do the pups will be absolutely adorable, people have already spoken for pups when they breed, but the only issue will be getting me to let them go… It was nice to get out there hiking, the pups loved it until it got hot on both days, although it didn’t seem like it, it has been very dry, and there was no water for them to cool down in. As I am in preparation for the bowhunting season, and I thought it would be too hot, I would carry my pack with all the supplies rather than Miss Oohohh carrying all the water in her pack. I carried a one-liter bladder bag of water for each dog, which was just near enough as all the water holes were all dried up, the woods were as lush thou as I have ever seen, so there was a lot of nice shade. In fact the foliage was so thick it made trails difficult to find, on the plus side saskatoon bushes were heavy with ripe saskatoons much to the pleasure of both Miss Oohohh and I. Also feed for the wildlife like moose elk and deer were more abundant than I ever recall, they will be very healthy going into winter this year, and we saw many deer and other wildlife, the abundance of feed showed in the already big and plump fawns. Other than be muggy hot it was an extreme pleasure to be in the wilderness exploring, upon arriving home each day the first thing Sir Mukluk did was dive into the “Cement pond” to cool off. He stood in there for 15 minutes, and I didn’t think he was ever going to leave his swimming hole, he looked so relived I actually thought of joining him, but alas I have so much summer stuff to do! When The Smoke Clears Why does it take until retirement that some of us realize all our life we worked so hard to make a living instead of making a life!

 

There is one thing about riding to g et h er i n a c ar for a long trip and h av i n g a c r ew o f cranky passengers going in at the beginning that doesn’t make for a whole lot of enjoyable initial moments for the ride. Certainly doesn’t make for settling in behind the wheel with the nearly the same zen of mind you would like….focus being a rather important aspect of the task. Distracted driving… as they say. I suppose it could have a good deal to do with whether the said passengers wanted to go along in the first place, or whether they get to bring along all the distractions for themselves to make the trip endurable for the length it goes and for a state of peace to be arrived at. There might be some comment there about how we spend a

lot more of our time on 4 wheels as a generation now as opposed to perhaps 40 years ago when I was growing up, and how the dynamic of being in a car has changed. I don’t have much of a memory of riding in our first station wagon car...but I do remember riding in our old white 1974 Gran Torino. I was all of 6 when we got that car brand new…but even then had some inkling that a family of seven riding in even the 4 door model of that car was going to be rather squishy, not even mentioning the safety aspect of seatbelts, etc. The good old days… right? We just didn’t spend a whole lot of time all together in the car in those days yet…trips where everyone bundled into the car were less…and maybe it was that fact that lent itself to enduring the rides that you did take with more patience fueled in the tank than I see now in my kids who seem far more lacking in that attribute. Maybe my brother and I between parents on either side sitting on the front bench (with no lap belts as I remember) had entirely more to do with being within reach of the long arm of the law, if you get my drift. My sisters may have something more to add on the subject about the general state of harmony on the car rides back then

as they rode in the back seat together, but as a rule I seem to remember it was the simple mantra of ‘behave or else’ that was in effect. The dispute settling mechanism did not take anywhere near as long as our courts…tolerance was just not a word in anyone’s vocabulary, not for even the slightest of shenanigans. What strikes me is how we as kids managed dealing with that…I certainly was no less in the high energy department as my youngest is now. I don’t remember us playing a lot of car ride games or anything or that sort to pass the time…or packing along any snacks/ drinks to quench growing appetites. Rides were a spartan affair. If you were hungry or had to go to the bathroom and were making a car 7-full have to stop just for you? You had better have an empty stomach AND a hollow leg or your eyeballs be a floatin’, mister. I guess we were content looking out the window and seeing what was happening around us as we went by. Imag-

ine that for a second. I know my kids usually have their head down over some book, craft, or device whenever I spot an animal or something if interest, or when I ask them where they are after the 100th time down a road and they don’t know… I find myself getting more frustrated with. Not sure I can recreate those Gran Torino trips now with any success, but I hope my kids finally learn something about the world and where they are just by something as simple as going along for the ride and looking out the car window. The

Lorraine Kochan, massage therapist can help your animal with many problems. Kochan started Country Touch 15 years ago and has taken numerous courses for many varies of treatment throughout the years, too numerous to mention. She has been helping people with their problems but about 3 years ago Kochan was looking for another course to take when she found the EQUI-BOW CANADA, (An Equine Bodywork Technique) offered in Ontario. This Equi- Bow treatment is based on how the body heals itself on an ongo-

It works primarily though the nervous system on both structural and energetic levels and helps with neuromuscular re-patterning. It is gentle and non-invasive. One of the testimonials was from April Ockerman when her cow ‘Heather’ seemed to have a swollen hip and flank. It appeared that a bone was broke inside of the leg because of a clicking sound when Heather walked. The Vet came out to do an examination to see if there was any surgery or medicine that could be given to Heather to fix her pain and help her swelling decrease for the long term. The Vet determined that the only thing that could be given was medicine for short term fix, keep feed close by for her to easily access and get her up to walk around instead of her laying down constantly. Heather was given medicine for a week and it wasn’t helping solve her problem of bringing down the swelling or decreasing her pain. Ockerman asked Kochan to come over and do a session and after the first treatment it decreased the pain around her hip and flank. By the second treatment Heather was calm and she acted like her normal self with there being no pain and the swelling decreased 100 per cent. Ockerman’s testimonial states that Heather is able to walk better, has no clicks when she walks, is able to eat more hay and be able to stand and walk long distances with the herd and is able to run in the pasture. Her reaction to the session was being extremely happy, appreciative and blown away by the result. Ockman went on to say the Lorraine inspired her to pursue animal massage as a technique on working with her animals and that Lorraine is simply one of her mentors that she looks up to. Another testimonial came from Cheryl Felt regarding her cat Taz a female Manx cat who was 17 years old. Taz had a lower back injury from when she was 2 years old from a retaining wall of mud which fell on her, basically paralyzing her for 6 weeks. Felt had to even carry her to the litter box and feed her by hand. Over the years she had trouble with her hip dislocating when she tried jumping over high objects. She would roll or move around until she put her hips back into place. Taz received a session from Kochan and the same day Felt noticed increased energy and the indentation in the lower part of her back had decreased. Her mobility over the next few days increased as well. A third testimonial came from Patti Breland regarding her horse, ‘Skip’. Skip is a 16.2 hand black Tennessee Walker with

a sweet gentle disposition. The last few years he has been predisposed to foundering. When Lorraine came to work on him in September he was extremely sore, did not want to walk and looked very drawn up from pain. When Lorraine worked on him she found his scapula muscles atrophied from lameness in the front and also found him very tender along the croup, probably from overcompensating for his front soreness. When she worked on Skip he became very tired and relaxed looking, putting his head down and yawning widely. The first treatment didn’t show too much variance, but the second one he looked brighter and he wasn’t so drawn up though his abdomen and flank area. He looked much happier. After the third treatment, I went out to the pasture and was so excited!! He looked like his old self, and he even took off for a little canter. Communities In Bloom Welcomes National Judges

Soaking up community spirit, judges Jim Baird and Evelyn Alemanni, toured Vermilion on July 24, as part of their national Communities In Bloom tour. This year, Vermilion is in the category of champions with Castlegar, B.C., Trail, B.C., and Millet, AB. Vermilion’s Communities in Bloom (CIB) committee began in 1999, won a provincial award in 2005, and a national award in 2010. According to judge, Evelyn Alemanni, the day’s rain was timed perfectly as

One thing different about Vermilion was the community oven. I had seen one in Italy that was still being used after 300 years, but I haven’t seen one in other parts of North America.
