Provincial Champions Returning After 50 Years

Celebrating their 50 year reunion, the 1967 Vermilion Kinsmen Pontiacs - Midget Provincial Champions will be gathering at the Pomeroy at 6 p.m. on July 29. Members will be travelling from as far as Florida to attend, and the team has invited anyone from the public who was involved or would like to offer their congratulations. In 1967, the team scored 276 goals with only 46 against during their 25 games. In total they had 28 wins and only 1 loss to a AA team from Edmonton. After their success in 1967, many

members of the team went on to play hockey elsewhere, including Ron Jones who was drafted by the Boston Bruins and played with Bobby Orr during their Stanley Cup Championship season in 1971-72. Don Brennan was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres, and Bob Miller was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. According to Lyle Farkash, the number of people who went on to play was interesting with three captains and many players on Junior and Western Canadian teams. “The thing that`s indicative of the team is that everyone is coming back to the reunion; it`s pretty amazing after 50 years. Without

the support of the town, we wouldn`t have been as successful or had near as much fun,” said Jones. According to Jones, with a population around 3,000 people, the team consistently drew 2,000 to the rink with standing room only. “There must have been something awfully special going on,” said Jones. The team noted that Gordon Hubbard had been a big time influence to Vermilion Hockey- having previously coached the team multiple years in Minor Hockey. They also noted the influence of Brent Macnab who played with Vancouver at one time, as

well as coaches, Joe Brower and Henry Wasylik. “We were also grateful to Manager - Bud Baddock, Coach - the late Stan Manyluk, rink attendants Johnny Gordie and Jack Winters, and our busy, dedicated parents. They did a fabulous job helping us as children by flooding the ice with hand carts, and even let us on the ice early; they were really good. We were a bunch of country boys really, and after working hard on the farm and in small towns, we were rewarded by getting to play sports. The Vermilion Agricultural Society will be hosting the 111th Vermilion Fair from July 27 - 29. Between celebrating 100 years of 4-H in Alberta and Canada 150, there will be a range of exciting exhibits and livestock shows throughout the weekend. The West Coast Amusements Midway is always a hit with families, and travellers often come from far distances to enjoy the mix of traditional and new entertainment options while being welcomed in a small town. Pancake Breakfasts will include one at the Legion on July 27, from 6:30 – 10 a.m., and one at Fountain Tire on July 28, from 8 – 11 a.m. An Antique Tractor Pull and Parade will take place on the north side of the fair grounds on July 28, at 1 p.m., while the Modified Tractor Pull will be held on July 29, at 1 p.m. Other events that always seem to draw a large crowd are the Pony Chariot and Chuckwagon Races. The Vermilion Communities in Bloom held their annual guided Communities in Bloom Garden Tour on July 19. Six homeowners in the 4600 block proudly opened their gardens for public viewing and enthusiastically spoke with attendees regarding the fruits of their labour and how their gardens came to be. A wooden yellow flower placed in the front yard of participating homeowners signaled to tour participants which garden they could visit; and all gardens were located within walking distance of each other making the tour easy to maneuver. Each garden offered the attendees various sensory experiences as one garden provided the opportunity to smell different herbs; while in another garden you could hear the trickling water in the Koi pond. All gardens offered visual gratification with the colourful flowers and trinkets. A couple of the gardens had quaint seating areas that offered the owners their own personal oasis. Vermilion resident and garden owner Sylvia Preteau loves to garden and each year tries to add a little something different. “I have always loved to garden; my husband is the potato and tomato planter, that’s his part, the flowers he’s not really worried about; that’s my part. We have planted tomatoes, lettuce, onions, beans, carrots, beets and a few peas. We have an apple and crab apple tree and rose bushes; the yellow roses had about 12 last week and today just a couple. We have Lilies and snap dragons.

Garden Tour Success

I like to try something new every year, sometimes it works out, and sometimes it doesn’t. This year I tried herbs, we have rosemary, parsley, basil and another type of basil, it smells really nice,” said Preteau. Allan and Debbie Riley’s garden portrayed a mini oasis including a seating area that resembled a study. The seating area is nestled along the east side of the garden and is sheltered by the Riley neighbour’s large trees. When Allan Riley was asked if it has been a work in progress Riley laughed and said “Not really.” “It started out when we first moved in here there was like a shed and the fence wasn’t there, and my daughters got a dog so...I was building a fence up and whatever, and I built a shed for the sleds and quads and everything, then one day I came up with the idea I was going to make a square back there for just a sitting area. Then she said I have some ideas...can you make it all the way down and it just continued to go down down (referring to the seating area),” said Riley. The Riley front garden also featured a telescope, a library on the front curb so people can borrow a book. The garden of Brian Marlow and Susan-Hodges Marlow presented its own life as Koi fish, and Gold fish swam in a garden pond. The Marlow garden also featured a seating area with an old stove which Susan one day hopes to refurbish and have in working order. The Marlow’s garden also features a wind tunnel which Susan explained during the tour. “So, this is what we call a wind tunnel;

What they found was that even with this kind of a tunnel the stuff that was on the inside grew way bigger, it is because it draws the warmer wind in,” said Marlow. Susan and Brian have been gardening forever and said when they moved into their house there was nothing in the back, but a dirt garden and have been building their garden since 2007. As visitors walked through all six gardens comments could be heard of how beautiful each garden was in their own way. Communities in Bloom Chair, Donna Moon, said they had a wonderful turnout.

John Stewart Named Distinguished Citizen

Wiping tears from his eyes, John A. Stewart walked on stage to a standing ovation during the Lakeland College Vermilion campus convocation ceremony on Friday, June 2. The lifelong Vermilion resident was clearly touched to receive an Honorary Bachelor of Applied Business degree from Lakeland and be recognized as a Distinguished Citizen. John’s son Doug Stewart addressed the crowd and thanked the college for recognizing his dad. “It means so much to him and to all of our family. Dad

always viewed the college ‌ as one of the cornerstones of this community and region,� says Doug Craig’s of Vermilion, the retail business which has been in their family since 1905, has supported the college’s awards program since 1927. The business, which John joined in 1959 a few years after earning a business degree at the University of Montana, has also contributed to numerous other Lakeland initiatives and student groups throughout the years.  John and his late wife Sally funded an on-campus gallery to showcase the work of interior design technology students.

Many local organizations have benefited from John’s involvement including Vermilion Agricultural Society, Kinsmen Club of Vermilion, and Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce. He helped with numerous major projec ts suc h as hosting professional rodeos and building a grandstand on the Vermilion Agricultural Society fairgrounds. John and Craig’s have also been strong supporters of many youth teams and organizations, including 4-H. “ Dad ha s always b e en a stro ng believer in contributing to and supporti n g t h e c o m m u n i t y,� s a y s D o u g ,

reminding the graduates that many of the facilities and activities they enjoy today are the result of the volunteer work done by previous generations. “Dad would (say) that contributing to your community in whatever form you choose offers many personal rewards: it builds character, integrity, pride, and friendship.� Doug encouraged the graduates to continue the service legacy of previous generations by getting involved with a service group, coaching a sports team or helping out with special events. “I know the community and your life – like Dad’s – will be richer in so many ways.�

This year the parade is geared around the 100th anniversary of 4H, which means there will probably be a lot of green and white floats passing in front of you. The WCA Midway is always a popular

event for both young and old, and it will certainly be entertaining to go and see everyone having fun on the rides, and maybe even a few scatter sickies. I have never been one for the rides as I would definitely be one of the sick people floating around. I even get motion sickness just watching the rides twirl. If you are someone like me, and the rides are not your thing there are soooo many events to take in morning, noon and night. The Vermilion Ag Society along with its volunteers has always done a beautiful job organizing the three day fair which

The modernization project will be replacing the three oldest wings of the lodge, which was built in 1960, the dining room, and kitchen. The current structure has 84 suites, ranging from 150 to 280 square feet in size, and no longer fit the Government of Alberta’s standards to senior access. The new building will include 52 new, 350 square feet rooms, which will each have a small kitchenette and walk in shower. Our quiet town will soon be bustling with visitors, and while we are a very trusting town, I do think it is important to remember to be vigilant with our children. Don’t let little ones wander off by themselves; it can be pretty scary when you turn around and discover your child is on the missing list and it can be even more traumatic for them when they can’t find their parents. We have to remember

that with the twinkling lights and so many things to look at children do get distracted easily and wander away. As for us adults, I think it is important for us to remember that even though it is a weekend meant for fun, we all need to take care and caution with how much we drink and keep it planted solidly in our minds not to drink and then drive. No one wants a DUI or death on their hands. Enjoy the weekend with your friends and loved ones, make memories that will last a life and above all else stay safe. Have wonderful Fair times everyone!

Using one of these step counters can help to set short and long-term goals for how much you walk in a day. Other people like to set alarms in their phone to remind them to walk. No matter how you choose to remind yourself to get up and walk, doing a bit each day improves overall health, mood and

Walk in a well-lit, safe place. • Carry a cell phone for emergencies. • Wear comfortable shoes and socks that cushion and support your feet. • Pay attention to your walking surface. Use sidewalks and paths. • If you usually walk outside and the weather is bad, take comfortable shoes to the mall and walk several laps inside. • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after you are active. The Good Old Days

It is a phrase that usually has you thinking of the warm and fuzzies… perhaps because of a touch of selective amnesia. Perhaps that line of thinking was the basis for nearly every one of Dad’s columns… or every time we share one of those Facebook memories (isn’t every day on Facebook a good old day?). It is not

like anything has actually ever changed under the Sun on the subject of returning to good experiences. So with that thought in mind in July it comes to fair time, and usually many of us past and present Vermilionites (and beyond) are comparing notes on who is coming, what are we going to be doing on what day, when we are going to run in to whom, and where we are going to be sitting on which street for the parade (in my case perhaps eating pastries near some sort of oven deal). So what is it that keeps us all coming back? Well the Fair itself is remarkably similar to what I remember as a kid, and that is part of it. If I sat and visualized the grounds in my head from the first time, probably wouldn’t trip over a whole lot walking with my eyes closed up and down it this time around. Bit of an extrapolation…but not too much.

Saskatoon berries have been ready for several weeks. This year there is a good crop of them. While I love the quiet contemplative work of berry picking, I really hate all the mosquito bites that seem to go hand in hand with Saskatoon berry picking. One thing I have discovered is that some people are not bothered by mosquitoes at all, while others are heavily targeted for bites and left with large painful welts. So for some, Saskatoon berry picking is a blood sport, unless you have a very effective cloaking device. Currently there are all natural essential oil based

sprays that can be used as an alternative to the chemical sprays. The word Saskatoon is derived from the Cree word, mis-sask-qua-too-mina meaning many branched tree. Saskatoons have been used for hundreds of years by the native people of the prairies for medicine, food and specifically pemmican. Saskatoons are full of beneficial antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. They are a good source of calcium, magnesium and fiber, but their greatest benefit is in the anthocyanins that make Saskatoons their bluish purple color. Anthocyanins are not a vitamin or mineral, but rather a flavonol that is highly protective as an anti-inflammatory antioxidant. Saskatoons have twice as many antioxidants as blueber-

But that is what I like about it and I’m not the only one who does obviously. I have a lot of firsts to remember when it comes to the fair…and talking about them with others is usually par t of the fun when we run in to people we know and end up talking for 15 minutes without even trying. First time I ever remember gambling was at the fair…as a brazen boy who was sitting near Don Mazankowski in the grandstand calmly walking up to him to brazenly bet and fleece him of quarters on 4 straight pony chuckwagon races before walking away with a dollar in hand. Well that is the way I remember it now anyway and not every day to you take money from an MP as it turns out. Place the Saskatoons into a 8” x 8” buttered pan. Combine the cornstarch and the 1 tablespoon sugar in a small bowl and then gently stir this mixture into the Saskatoons. In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking powder, salt and sugar and mix well. Combine the melted butter and milk and then stir into the flour mixture. Do not over mix or the topping will be tough and hard. Lightly grease the bottom of an 8” x8” pan. Pat the batter into an 8” x 8” pan and smooth out to the edges, leaving a space in the middle for steam to escape. Sprinkle the batter with the 1 or 2 teaspoons of sugar. Bake at 350 degrees for approximately 35 minutes, depending on your oven, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out.

Vivint Canada was notified of the suspension on Monday, July 17, 2017 through a l et te r p r ov i d e d by t h e of f i c e of the City Clerk. The suspension was i s s u e d i n a c c o r d a n c e w i t h p r ov i sions set for th in Section 67 of the Business License Bylaw (16-2017). “During the 30-day suspension, the City will gather information relating

to the behaviour of Vivint Canada’s System’s sales representatives, who have been going door-to-door in our communit y in recent weeks,” said Doug Rodwell, City Clerk. “Following a review of the feedback collected over the next 30 days, a decision will be made on the status of the company’s business license.” Violation of a business-license suspension may result in fines and permanent revocation of the business licence. Vermilion Girl Guides Celebrate Canada’s 150th On Parliament Hill!

Adventures take time to plan, but they are worth the effort. Especially when you get to see out Nation’s capital city during the biggest birthday party it has ever hosted! What does it take to get a trip like this going? First off, it takes dedicated leaders who are willing to take on the responsibility of hauling a group of kids, and looking after their every need, far from home. All the planning, book keeping, fundraising, and scheduling. All the booking of venues, tickets, and transportation. The daunting amount of paperwork to take kids, not of your blood, away from home for 8 days. More volunteer hours than some of you can imagine, and that’s before we even leave home. Second off, it takes two years worth of fundraising. That is what this dedicated group of Girl Guides put in to make this trip happen. Two hundred (yes – 200) CASES of cookies, with each case containing a dozen boxes. Thank you to all who purchase these lovely treats every fall (mint cookies) and spring (chocolate & vanilla sandwich). Garbage clean up and bottle collection at the Fair, never a fun job. Repeated pizza sales, and Easter basket treat sales, again thank you to all who purchased. A garage sale and a quilt raffle. It took all these things, and countless hours of challenging work to make this trip a reality for the seven girls and two leaders who accomplished the task. Yes, people could just pay for their daughter to go on a trip like this, but the girls learn and appreciate travel so much more when they must help earn their way. We are trying to build leaders

of the future, who contribute to society. Not people who shirk the work. Third off, it takes two years worth of extra meetings to organize what everybody wants to do. Girls help choose activities, so they will show more interest in what we do every day. The history involved in the making of our country, so the war museum, and museum of history are more engaging. They must learn how to pack (we believe in carry on only travel), and how to budget their spending money. How to stay safe in a strange place in a huge crowd. So many skills that will help create the people we want to see in the future. People who can think, and behave, and thrive in their future life. So, was all this work wor th it? A resounding YES!! We had an amazing time in Ottawa. The big Birthday Party on Parliament Hill, while very soggy, was astounding to be a part of. The energy and atmosphere of all the people proud to live in this amazing country. The speeches, the singers, and the performances by all, were a site to see. The fireworks were sensational, and we now have a group of young girls who can say, “I was there for the 150th!” The rest of the trip was rounded off by seeing Ottawa, and all that it can offer. Rideau Hall, whose grounds are breathtaking. The RCMP musical ride stables, with the impressive big black horses. The Canadian War Museum, which has an powerfully emotional Vimy Ridge section. The Nature Museum, Space and Aviation Museum, and The National Art Gallery. A sunset boat tour, a ghost walk to hear scary stories, and seeing the amazing plant sculptures at Mosiac 150 in Jacques- Cartier Park in

Quebec. Of course, a tour of our Parliament buildings, including an elevator ride to the top of the Peace Tower, and even a mock trial at our Supreme Court. We toured the Mint, where our specialty coins are made, and Diefenbunker - Canada’s Cold War Museum. We had a playful time at Saunders Farm (mazes, splash park, gem mining, and giant jumping pillows!). So may activities, so much scrumptious food (Beaver Tails anyone), and a balance of culture, history, and fun. The girls who went on this trip, will never say that it was too much work, or that there was too much planning or fundraising, or too many extra meet-

ings. Each and every girl came back with engaging stories to tell their families and friends, smiling faces, and a huge sense of accomplishment. They realize how lucky they were to be able to enjoy the amazing opportunity that they worked so hard for. They embrace the skills they learned, and will carry the very same with them for the rest of their lives. Girls in Guides get many opportunities to be a part of adventures like this one. So please, keep buying the cookies, supporting the fundraisers, and registering your girls (and/ or yourselves) in this amazing organization. Above all, appreciate this country, and it’s 150 years of existence.

Upcoming Knights Of The Northern Realm

A medieval tournament is scheduled to take place at the Vermilion Fair’s grandstand on July 29, at 3 p.m. Complete with 14th centur y style clothing and armour, three members of the Knights Of The Northern Realm will perform living history marshal combat during the heavy horse hitch. Axes, daggers, flails, and spears will be weapons used throughout the tournament to display marshal prowess. The time-

period, themed event is already sparking curiosity around town. “I am thrilled just because it is new and exciting; something that I’ve never seen before. They are expected to be good entertainers for sure,” said Vermilion Agricultural Society President, Jay Sinclair. The knights practice in the Edmonton area, and to fulfill the code of chivalry, regularly contribute to the community through a range of charity events. With members having a range of careers and backgrounds, this group of

knights began 16 years ago, and continues to host training classes for those interested. Sir Thomas of Strathcona is passionately involved and said, “We are learning a lost art. I think there is a great reward from studying history. The glory of it all is to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors and experiencing what people in the 14th century would have. Nothing beats wearing 65 lbs. of armour and fighting with skill in a tournament.” Sir Thomas of Strathcona was knighted

According to Sir Thomas of Strathcona, Destination Conservation was a program that worked through schools where he was able to interact with a lot of children in each community including the areas of Wainwright, Vermilion, and Lloydminster. Celebrate Agriculture With Lakeland At Feast On The Farm

Ever yone is invited to participate in the second annual event at the Vermilion campus on Saturday, Aug. 19. “Lakeland College’s Feast on the Farm is a culinar y experience to celebrate agriculture,” says Geoff Brown, associate dean of Lakeland’s School of Agricultural Sciences. “ This par t y in c lud es a d eli c ious meal, a rousing live auction, and great music from the talented Dirt Rich Band.” Guests will venture outdoors for an entertaining evening at Lakeland’s

A Family, A Fair When county fair fever hits mid-summer, the whole family starts getting excited to spend a weekend having fun, eating treats and seeing the crowds. Here are a few tips to help you and your kids get the most out of your trip to the fair this year. Set goals for your visit. Turn your fair visit into a treasure hunt of sorts; see who can find the most interesting exhibit, most interesting new food or the funniest-looking breed of animal. Grownups can set goals such as finding locally made products or dining on farm-to-table foods. Don’t pass on the collections and contest exhibits. Your kids might be inspired to enter a best-cake contest or photo competition next year. This is a great quiettime activity for when kids are over-stimulated by carnival rides and market stalls. Find some time to rest. The evening will be smoother if you all get some quiet time. There’s generally less traffic around the farming equipment exhibits and exhibitors’ campsites. You could also head back to

the quiet of the parking lots and rest in or near the car — just remember to leave shades in the windows when you park. Set a budget and stick to it. Explain to everybody the game plan for meals, carnival games and special purchases. If you’re on a tight budget, enjoy a quick walk around the higher-spending zones and then focus on the animals, shows and arts-and-craft exhibits. Re­member, there’s plenty to do at the fair that doesn’t cost extra money.

With young children, head to the fair as close to opening time as possible; it’s less busy then.

Calgary’s Chuckwagon Champion

Local World Professional Chuckwagon Driver, Kurt Bensmiller, won the 2017 Rangeland Derby Dash for Cash collecting $100,000 at the Calgar y Stampede on July 16. For claiming the aggregate spot on July 14, with the fastest combined time after 8 days, Bensmiller was awarded the Richard Cosgrave Memorial bronze and a GMC 3500-1 ton diesel truck. The same day, Bensmiller also received the Safety Award. Driving for West Industrial Ltd. during the Dash for Cash, Bensmiller was

appreciative of the support he received throughout the season. “ I’d like to thank my wife Ashly; daughters Harlee, Hayze, and Vahn; parents Buddy and Darlene, Cruise Bensmiller, Lindsay Leighton, Addison Bates, Raymond and Jeanet te Scott, as well as Darcy and Christian Burton for being my crew for most of the summer,” said Bensmiller. When asked what extra special care he puts into his horses to make them champions, Bensmiller said, “It seems we are one of the first ones in the barns and the last ones out. Though many other driving teams practice these same

techniques, there is often mudding clay put on their legs and feet, and equine massage therapists and chiropractors that help along with their training and feeding routines. They always seem to run well when they are happy.” Bensmiller’s next stop on the World Professional Chuckwagon Circuit will be in Bonnyville from July 27 – 30. “We are excited going forward; right now we have a good shot at winning the worlds. If the horses stay healthy, and everything stays the way it is, we should be tough coming down the last stretch this month for the world points,” Kurt Bensmiller. 3 Things To Do After Graduation When You Can’t Find A Job

(NC) So you’ve spent the last four years of your life at university. You’ve dedicated your time in equal portions to studying in the library and making lifelong friends. You’ve had the best time of your life and are ready to walk out those ivy-covered walls with your diploma in hand. Unfortunately, graduating university in the 21st century no longer guarantees a six-figure job in your chosen field. If you’re one of the many students struggling to figure it all out after graduation, here are three alternative suggestions to finding a job. Apply to graduate school. If you are truly passionate about what you studied in university, you may consider going into academia as a career. Applying to grad school is a long and grueling process but many find the outcome very rewarding. Take what you’ve learned in your undergraduate education and apply it to a larger

thesis or research project to study in a master’s or doctorate program. Take a gap year to travel. Maybe you were able to save some extra money waiting tables the past few years.
