Cheering fans gathered to support the Vermilion Shadows as they hosted the U19 D Girls Softball Provincials from July 7 – 9, at the Pioneer Park Ball Diamonds. The Shadows played their first game against Olds, winning 6 - 3. According to fellow teammates, the highlight was Taylor Pankiw’s solid pitching. For added fun at the provincial tournament, the Shadows hosted skills competitions including timed around the horn, a cut off relay, and timed around the bases. Game two was played against Red Deer, with Vermilion winning 12 – 3. According to team members, highlights included a double play and having mercied their opponents during inning five. Opening ceremonies was emceed by Vermilion Minor Ball President, Allan Chase. He introduced the umpires, each team, and special guests Pete Wilkinson and MLA Dr. Richard Starke. A couple of
players volunteered to step in and sing Oh Canada. Winners of the skills competition were announced with Barrhead placing 3rd, Elnora placing 2nd, and Vermilion placing 1st. I’d like to thank all the teams for their dedication and sacrifice to get here, as well as the parents and volunteers. Enjoy your time here, as the bonds you form will last a lifetime,” said Chase. “As a former player for the Greenwood Limousin’s and former minister of tourism, parks, and recreation, I feel all amateur sports provide apprenticeship for life; through the diligence and dedication that it takes to be part of a team. Good luck and have fun,” said Starke. The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Pete Wilkinson, who has played, coached, and umpired for over 40 years. Acting as an umpire for over 30 years with this being his last, Vermilion Minor Ball wanted to thank him for his support. Starke agreed to catch the opening pitch. A couple of younger players were
called up for the provincial tournament this year and they were ecstatic to have the opportunity. “My favourite part of the tournament was getting to play with the team,” said Kylie Hartwell. “When asked what their experience was like having that many girls supporting one another on the U19 Shadows team, Camden Rochford said, “They display good sportsmanship. They are always
upbeat and not down on anyone.” Throughout the weekend, teams and fans enjoyed the high energy softball atmosphere, the hot summer weather, and the concession for refreshments. “We would like to thank the Town of Vermilion for their preparations, everyone for their fabulous support, the volunteers for coming out, and the seniors for coming to watch,” said head coach, Dana Gard. Well, there you have it! The Canadian government has officially apologized to Omar Khadr and provided him with a reported settlement of $10.5 million, which is about half of what Khadr and his lawyer Dennis Edney was seeking when they initiated the civil suit against the Canadian government in 2004. Khadr was convicted by the U.S military commission in 2010 as a terrorist when he confessed to being part of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group at the age of 15. Khadr also admitted to killing U.S. Delta Force Sergeant Christopher Speer and injuring Special Forces soldier Layne Morris when he tossed a grenade during the 2002 gunfight in Afghanistan along with other war crimes. Apparently, the Canadian government settled the lawsuit because the

Supreme Court of Canada ruled in 2010 that Canadian security officials had participated in the abusive interrogation carried out by the U.S. while Khadr was imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. The news of the settlement and apology has prompted pretty strong reactions from Canadians and the new Alberta Conservative leader Jason Kenney who took to Twitter and wrote: “Odious. Confessed terrorist who assembled & planted the same kind of IEDs that killed 97 Canadians to be given $10 million by Justin Trudeau,” “This confessed terrorist should be in prison paying for his crimes, not profiting from them at the expense of Canadian taxpayers.” Kenney is not the only political figure in Alberta to express his displeasure in the settlement to Khadr. Edmonton, MP Kerry Diotte expressed himself on Twitter saying “I think it’s quite shameful.” and Wildrose MLA Derek Fildebrandt also took to Twitter and said, “Beyond disappointed with our federal government for this act

of cowardice.” Fildebrandt also posed the question “How much of this $10 million will Khadr donate to the family of the soldier he murdered?” Calgary MP Michelle Rempel brought up a very valid point in her tweet when she said: “When a Canadian soldier is injured in battle, the government provides a disability award up to a maximum of $360,000.” “Despite this, the current government is willing to provide $10 million to a convicted terrorist.” It is not only political figures who seem disgusted by the federal government’s decision to apologize and settle the case as numerous memes have sprouted up on Facebook in the last week and Facebookers are certainly expressing themselves. As well the comments made in the comments sections of various news articles show that some Canadians are not happy. A Calgary Herald news article regarding the settlement and apology show the distaste some feel as said by Jim Cherewick “Our
little minded prime minister plainly supports terrorists! Nuff said!” So as you can see there is anger floating around out there, and I could provide example after example but just do not have the space to do so. But on the other side of the coin as with any debate, there are people who completely support the government’s decision and feel it is about time they did so. What do you think? You know the fold out paper keep in your glove box, on the driver side visor, or an entire drawer in your office kind. Yes…the ones you can never seem to get the fold pattern right again after you get it all spread open, or once you do… what you were actually looking to find is

When the heat of summer is turned up, it’s time to turn to cool refreshing drinks. My niece loves Ice Caps, so after our recent trip to treat her with her favourite coffee drink, I decided to develop an easy recipe that can be made at home. Make sure your ice cubes trays are filled, because this recipe is sure to be a summer favourite. Coffee is full of very strong beneficial antioxidants and healthful polyphenols. Polyphenols protect our unsaturated fatty acids and our cells. Polyphenols are also found in red wine, tea, parsley and chocolate. Polyphenols are needed for the devel-

Hear me out. I suppose it comes from an adolescent career as designated navigator on road trips with Dad or the family…I got used to being in charge of a map and visually surveying my surroundings. Funny how little things like that stay with you isn’t it? 30+ years invested around computers you would think I would naturally be inclined to hand over the reins on something as remarkable as the navigation tech we have now…but
the opposite is the case. Like anything related to the human being…if you don’t use it, you lose it. Instead of zoning out between Point A and Point B (sensing a common theme here with me lately)…you have to constantly keep your mind and your eyes engaged to your surroundings for the length of the journey. And like going to the gym often to keep yourself physically fit…that kind of mental activity contributes to keeping your brain sharp. Studying a map before the sortie may not be everyone’s thing though….I’ll give you that one. One of the by-products of doing ‘manual’ navigation, fortunately, is your brain begins to reveal and absorb all those ‘black areas’ of the map…the places you have never been before become the ‘Oh yeah, I remember seeing that place.’ If you have had the experience of playing a computer game like ‘Civilization’ you know exactly what I am talking about.

produces uncomfortable jittery effects, so using decaffeinated coffee is a great alternative. Look for decaffeinated coffee that is made with a water process, instead of a solvent process. Another drawback of the caffeine in coffee can be how it disturbs the ability to fall asleep at night. If this is a problem it is suggested that coffee consumption be stopped by 4 p.m. The half life of caffeine (the time it take the body to eliminate half the caffeine) is 5 - 6 hours. Another surprising benefit of coffee is that it is a source of essential nutrients such as Vitamin B2, B3, B5, magnesium, manganese, chromium and potassium. Hard to believe but a cup of coffee has more antioxidants than a serving of blueberries, grape juice or oranges. The caffeine in coffee can give us both mental and physical energy
Now perhaps it is also a product of my age that with all the road trips I’ve been on travelling with Dad or later on in my early job career building roads …I have filled in an awful lot of squares on the old map of Alberta. Enough that many of the ‘back’ roads I remember on road trips first as gravel are now paved going back over them again. Progress…it lets us get around to see more of our home quicker. I keep a special map actually (version 2 as the first one wore out)… my sort of Alberta Road Trip diary. I don’t have to excuse being partial about doing it either: Alberta is a great place to discover and I’ve been fortunate on my checklist. It always leaves me opportunities of ‘Hmmm…I’ve never been down this road before’ when the map comes out. So…get out this summer and ‘road trip’ Alberta. Leave the navigating and the map to your partner riding ‘shotgun’.

Happy July Folks! Summer is officially here, and I hope you had a safe and great Canada day long weekend. The weather co-operated nicely, although a little warm for the pups and I. I am not complaining except the pups all love to cool down in the shop, the concrete floor is nice and cool, and with overhead ceiling fans it’s the “coolest place in town.” Now, normally that’s not an issue. However, the hotter weather makes them run to the pools constantly, the big “fish” concrete pool we have near the house was starting to smell a little skunky. So Friday I spent the evening draining the pool with a pump cleaning it out with a powerful pressure washer than re-filling it with

clear cold water, they loved it. However the new game jump in the pool run to the shop …do a couple of laps around the entire thing then stop at daddy’s easy chair and shake off the excess five gallons of water, that is whether daddy is sitting in it or not. You think it can get any worse than that? ...Let ’s tr y; a momma skunk decided to have a large litter of kits under one of the out buildings. The kits now all mobile and very trigger happy with their business ends and are hitting anything that moves, just so happens the pups all move a lot, hence a new game! This new game involves stirring up a herd of baby skunks, in turn, the pups getting thoroughly sprayed, then they dive into the pool, head to the shop, do a couple of laps…find daddy’s chair… Ya, that got old quick and made for a stinking weekend, although a nice one. there is a reaction,” the engine now spun as fast as the auger was, ripping the engine handles from my hands which then tore into my legs so hard it flipped me in a circle. Laying on the ground trying to figure how many broken bones I had, I had four tongues licking my face, had I been knocked unconsciousness that would have surely brought me to consciousness very quickly. The four soaked pups all concerned were checking up on me all at once, I then could tell I had no broken bones, but both shoulders were screaming, as my legs got hit it nailed one leg shin, then big leg muscle on the back of the other leg. Needless to say, I moved quite slowly as there was no getting used to all this pain, maybe funny now but learn from my mistakes folks, that’s “ow” at best. I did manage to finish the rest of the holes, kind of…if I felt the slightest resistance, I stopped and moved on, and finished each as I go now with a hand power auger. I did manage to get seven of the posts set in concrete, even level no thanks to 16 furry feet, over the long weekend, but I wasn’t moving so fast and did other things that needed to be done that didn’t involve pain. I am getting to old for this kind of silly adventures, one’s that hurt anyway, speaking of getting old, sorry I missed last week, it seems that everyone found out I am to retire and decided I was not near busy enough. When The Smoke Clears My real life adventures are going to begin on my retirement, and I can’t wait…something you work your entire life for…a reality to behold!

sure washed out all their kennel pools and refilled them to the max. Funny thing though, although the water is clear and clean it seems to still be a little skunky for some reason…also for some reason all the pups needed to lick my face, oh ya that’s stink in your face! Now believe it or not one can adapt to smell somewhat but pain, on the other hand, is harder to master…the pups are all a huge pain in the you know what, but that makes me smile, so it’s ok. Now this long weekends huge project was to put up a new kennel. Did you know that if you put up a straight line rope just above ground level all four dogs will run into it and I am still trying to figure out how all four legs of said each will hit the line every time? As it cooled down a little Friday evening, I had to do the hard part of the kennel, dig a dozen holes needed for 10-foot steel posts, now only three feet of those needed to be buried. After having been inspected by “One Call” the Alberta “Call before you dig” to mark out all my buried utilities, I took on the task with a ground power auger, which looks and acts a lot like an ice fishing power auger. Digging the first hole I was amazed at how easy it was; I swear it was easier and just as fast as drilling through the ice with a power auger, that is until I hit hole number six, now the first five holes were half black dirt and sand down low. Hole number six drilled as smoothly as the rest through the black dirt and into the sand but then as I reached a depth where the auger was just above ankle level above ground…I hit a layer of clay. Here’s another one of those “did you know thingy’s”…dirt power augers don’t like clay, when it hit that clay the auger bit stopped dead, of course, the engine at full power with big handles, etc. above ground took over. Thoroughly understanding the phrase “for every action,

Vermilion Special Olympics Floor Hockey Players Heading To National Competition Angela Mouly Reporter
The Vegreville Pole Kats Special Olympics Floor Hockey Team won Provincials in March and has been invited to a National Qualifier tournament coming up in Edmonton this November. Two members of the team are from Ver m i l i o n; D av i d R e i n a n d J u s t i n Wolgien. Rein started with the team in March after they had been without a goalie due to injuries and medical conditions. His
only previous experience was 11 years prior in high school. According to Rein, the team had their biggest win at provincials being 13 - 0, and had scored 33 goals in their three games. The team is currently seeking sponsorship to contribute for tournament fees, new equipment, jersey preparation, and gym rental fees. The team practices once per week in Vegreville, and although they are heading into their off season, they are eager to show Special Olympics Canada their skills and ability
to win games and tournaments. Anyone interested in being a sponsor can contact David Rein at 780-581-4029. According to Rein, taking a page from the Special Olympics set of rules could make any sport better. “The thing I love most is seeing everyone working as a team as well as the good ethics and morals. Disputes are settled rationally, and there is always good teamwork and team play,” said Rein. Rein mentioned there is no checking or hitting in Special Olympics Floor Hockey, and he enjoys the encouragement among teammates. “At first some players have trouble getting going, and the team is patient
and helps them to strive to be the best that they can be. My good hand-eye coordination and speed as a goalie were acquired from playing the drums and basketball in school. These skills are an accomplishment after having been in a car accident at six-years-old and as a result; suffering a brain injury and being paralyzed on my left side. Approximately 20 children and their parents gathered at the Vermilion Curling Club on June 14, to take part in the Bike Rodeo. Participants • Had their bicycles checked over by bike mechanic Kurtis Groeniuk from Factory Sports in Lloydminster; • Had their bike helmets checked for proper fit by AHS Health Promotion Facilitator Joanne Stewart; • Were given an overview of the rules of the road by CST. Nick Doyle, Vermilion RCMP Detachment and County of Vermilion River Peace Officer Craig Weinert; • Had their riding skills challenged in the obstacle course by Pediatric Physiotherapist Kerry Zachar and the Vermilion AHS Children’s Rehabilitation Team.
Local Prairie EMS members and RCMP were also on hand to give children tours of the ambulance and RCMP vehicles. The Bike Rodeo Committee was very grateful to the Rotary Club of Vermilion for contributing $750 to provide a healthy snack for those in attendance, as well provide helmets to any riders that didn’t have one, or one that didn’t fit properly. They would also like to thank Kurtis from Factory Sports in Lloydminster for contributing his time and expertise in bike mechanics to the event, and the Town of Vermilion for providing the Curling Rink at the last minute due to rain out conditions. “It is the goal of the committee to make this an annual event, so families can look forward to it again next year!” said Community Health FacilitaParticipants enjoyed the Bike Rodeo in Vermilion on June 14. O n J u n e 27, Gr ad e 2, Gr ad e 3, and Grade 6 students all went to the Provincial Park. Grade 2 went on a nature walk around the trout pond, had a picnic lunch and ended with some fun in the splash park. Grade 3 dipped their buckets in the trout pond to find some water creatures, hiked down a trail, went on the docks and found a huge water beetle, water spiders, shrimp, snails, water krill, and a minnow. Then they hiked up a huge hill and had a wiener roast, followed by time in the spray park and on the playground. Grade 6 students spent the day celebrating the end of PATs. They went to the splash park, played capture the flag and self-led games, and had a picnic lunch. We celebrated Accelerated Reading Day on June 28. We started the morning with a photo of all VES staff and students dressed in red and white, waving Canada flags, standing in the shape of the number 150. We thank Jared Long for taking a photo of all of
us. After that, we preceded to indoor games. At 10:45, we had an assembly in the gym. The Grade 6 students made a lap around the gym, wearing the masks they made in ar t. There was club recognition for basketball (31 kids), gamer’s club (21), milk monitors (47), Klondike relay team (35), cross country running (21), friends’ committee (14), drama (24), hot lunch helpers (30), choir (28), volleyball (21), Grade 6 VIBE advisory (11), science fair (66), art club (25), environmental club (2), gardening club (7), Me to We (18) and library club (24). Staff farewells took place. We thank Vermilion Credit Union for sending Fat Cat and Janice Mulgrew and Corrine Rehman to our school, and for providing the top two readers with a cash prize. From 11:451, our students and their families had a picnic on the playground. In the afternoon, we played more indoor games. Congratulations to all VES students for reading a total of 20 400 AR points this year. The top division 1 reader was Arenas Abuzukar (355.8 pts) and in division 2, it was Teya Gould (903.1

They sang “Hall of Fame” by The Script for their guests, and accepted certificates presented
by homeroom teachers Mrs. Wakefield, Mrs. Myshaniuk and Mrs. Goodwin, and principal, Mrs. Webb. We thank board trustee member s Jim King and Bernie Huedepohl for being present and offering their best wishes. Congratulations to all the Grade 6 students. Get Your Parade Floats Ready!

Yes! It’s that time of the year again - it’s time to start thinking about your Vermilion Fair Parade float. This year the theme ‘4-H: Celebrating 100 Years’ will be highlighted during the 111th Vermilion Agricultural Fair and Parade, on Thursday, July 27. Vermilion Parade Chairman Russ Cameron, who has been with the parade committee for a total of 35 years, advised people to start getting creative and think about their float design. “Be colourful and remember to have good sound – it was very quiet last year and I would encourage people to reflect and
celebrate Canada 150 as well as the 4-H theme when designing their float. Last year we had a big parade with 145 floats, including 61 horses. I am hoping that this year will be just as big. Everyone is invited to participate, and everyone always has a great time. It’s hard to predict the turn out every year. A crowd of roughly 2000 people turn out to watch the parade procession annually. We are hoping to have two rodeo queens and maybe even some of the Oilers players,” said Cameron. Every year there is a DVD made of the parade which is filmed by Lakeland College. Afterwards the DVD is distributed

The ten categories for this year’s judging include Commercial, Decorated Cars, Out-of-Town, Antique, Senior Organization, Pioneer, Junior Organization, Decorated Bikes, Comic, and Decorated Ponies. There will be first, second and third place ribbons handed out depending on the number of entries in each categories. Floats should be set up by 9:30 a.m. on
July 27 for judging that begins at 10:00 a.m. The parade starts at 11 a.m. sharp and the route will follow its traditional path beginning at Lakeland Mall, down Railway Avenue turning right at 49th Street, then left at 50th Avenue where it will continue until 51st Street where it will turn south, returning to Railway Avenue and continues on this path, merging with 50th Avenue and ending at the Vermilion Health Care Centre. Kitscoty was one of the many communities celebrating the 150th birthday of Canada. The day kicked off with a Pancake Breakfast followed by a Parade highlighting our community’s “Past to Present”. Throughout the afternoon there was a Chili Cookoff, Seniors Tea House and Photo Booth, Country Fair, Quilt Show, Kids Activities and a display and spray hose by the Fire Department. The Village also had the official opening of the new Heritage Park which boasts of a 100 different varieties of Lilacs. MLA Dr Starke and Bob Barss from the Alberta Recycling Management Authority were present to help with the ribbon cutting. The day ended off with a BBQ supper and family dance and an impressive firework display. The Celebrate Kitscoty Committee would like to thank all those that came out and supported the event! Encouraging the grow th of the sport, the Vermilion Soccer Association hosted a Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp from July 3 - 7. The camp welcomed coach Aly x Durocher from Ardrossan, and coach Alfie Sutton from Stratford upon Avon, United Kingdom. Sutton said that he learned to play soc cer as soon as he could stand and that the program was created to bring the soccer culture of the United Kingdom to Canada; developing the programs here for later years. “ T h e B r i t i s h S o c c er Ca m p s ar e good for getting children outdoors and involved, more active, and bringing the community together. This month our club had its final meeting of the year on June 7 in Innisfree. Our Achievement Day on May 31 went very well and all of the members did a great job with their projects. Our Awards Night was on June 29 at the Innisfree Ball Diamonds. This year, our Member of the Year Award went to Kaylie Anderson. All of the members received a club gift and Breeder Association Awards were also handed out. Afterwards, the members played ball and relaxed around the campfire. Our members had a very successful year and we wish everyone a great summer! Hope to see all of the members back again next year! Our Organizational Meeting will be October 4 in Innisfree.
