Organizers of the 2017 Wainwright Stampede said that there was an average turn-out on the first two nights and a large turn-out on Saturday. The Emergency Medical Services ambulance was called upon after a bull stomped on a bull rider’s abdomen on the opening night of the Wainwright Stampede. The rider had no serious injury and walked off afterwards. A loose bull caused a stir and stalled the show briefly, startling many to jump out of the way to safety when he broke from his pen. The bull was rounded up and no one was hurt. The Vermilion and District Housing Foundation received a large donation of $75,000 from Vermilion Agland on June 19. B re n d a Le e, T h e Ver m ili o n an d District Housing Foundation chair said that the foundation was ex tremely grateful for the funding towards the modernization of the Vermilion Valley Lodge. “I think it speaks really highly of the Kay family and the current leadership team. I just can’t thank you enough. This total tells me the regard and respect that Agland has for our seniors and the communities and in particular the pioneers who built our community. Agland’s generous gift reinforce their corporate commitment to supporting the communities they serve and a significant boost to our fundraising efforts!” said Lee. Approximately 50 people par ticipated in the Crisis Line Walk-Run at the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 22. The committee was thankful for the good turnout and that the wind was up keeping down the mosquitoes. They also said that it was nice to see a lot of new people attend this year. “Thanks to the participants, donors, and volunteers; you have helped keep the lines open and available for people needing someone to talk to. We really need it. The 2015 - 2016 statistics shown at our last general meeting stated that the number of calls had almost doubled with the recession and everything going on; people are making use of the phone lines,” said Vermilion Crisis Line President, Amber Sanford. Numerous pamphlets and display items were available during the Town of Vermilion’s Open House on June 20. Residents were invited to ask any questions, and browse the information including upcoming Canada Day celebrations, summer programs, senior’s, services, and budgets. Town of Vermilion staff, councillors, Mayor, and the Green Team were eager to display the direction they are going and allowed them to ask any questions they had. According to Director of Community Services, Shawn Bell, the tiles began being installed in the tennis courts on June 20. Bell enjoyed socializing and

sharing with people and said “that the town strives to be transparent.” “With respect to recycling, I enjoyed answering a lot of questions. Everything that happens in the town is public domain. If we don’t know the answer, we will get it for them,” said Mayor, Bruce MacDuff. I f yo u r e ad my editorial last week, you know that it has been pretty stressful the past few weeks dealing with the whole Asbestos issue, and we will see if the stress of that is to end later this week. Only time will tell, I am certainly hoping what is left to deal with will have a smooth ending. Stress is known to be a killer, so in the mix of it all, I have to look at the brighter things in life and try to have fun once in a while, so that is what I did this past weekend. The Wainwright Stampede was on the go, and the Vermilion Voice entered a Mule Team into the annual parade. While it was a tad bit stressful trying to get the decorations made and organized it was a fun

Forget Stress, Have Fun

kind of stress. I met Sue, Rod, and Nick in Wainwright 7:30 Saturday morning and we scrambled to have the Mules and wagons decorated by 9 a.m. for judging. The theme of their parade was “Celebrating Canada’s 150th” so the Mules, wagons, Sue and I had to be decorated to fit the theme. I think Sue and I could have been called the Canadian girls from outer space as we had these funny headpieces on that made us look like someone from Mars. We had Canadian tattoos on our faces, red shirts and white pants with a Canadian-themed scarf on our legs and large Canadian flags around our shoulders that made wonderful capes. Once the parade started Rod and Nick had the pleasure of handling the Mule team, which at times was a laugh in itself when the Mules decided to be like the saying goes “stubborn as a Mule.” Sue and I had the pleasure of walking the parade route tossing candy and freezies to the

onlookers, which is something I also have enjoyed because it gives you the opportunity to interact with people. However, when our bags of goodies was empty retrieving more candy and freezies from the back of a moving wagon was not always the easiest of tasks and made for a good chuckle!! Sue was the one left to that job as she can be pretty quick when she has to be. If it were me trying to retrieve the candy/freezies, I would have certainly been run over by the wagon; chunky girls don’t move fast enough for that! LOL. This week will be another stressful, fun kind of week as my youngest is graduating high school. I can see this week now before it even starts. There will be a lot of squabbles, panic and great memories made with laughter ringing throughout the house. My daughter’s grandparents are here visiting from Newfoundland to attend her graduation, so that will be a blast in

It has been a few consecutive weeks now with a weather day seemingly reserved within for a wind to tip over trees in my yard. Honestly, it’s the first time I’ve been mulling over the merits of a forested abode to call home….with the weekdays almost alternating between days of ‘pick up sticks’ and mowing grass that seems to need mowing again before you even finish. This week the wind storm that hit Red Deer rather hard wasn’t exclusive…we got hit again too that day with another very large tree going down that I first noticed the lawn heaving

up around it in the morning, then as the day passed it leaning steadily further by degree until by evening it reached the end of its slow motion decent having snapped and cracked through every juvenile green poplar in its path with no chance to bear its weight. The inevitability of seeing the tree already beyond the point of any saving, I worked away that evening shovelling the sod and dirt off the root system and chopping away branches so it was not left precariously hanging, and to expedite the decent. With two wide-eyed children safely intently watching the proceedings nearby, I took a break several times to sit and watch the ground slowly rip up and listen to the trees crack…and ponder that if I was Hercules what would I do to resolve the tree situation acting like the Hydra here lately. Every time I deal with one, two more takes its place. There was a strange association I felt watching that inevitability of nature take place in a condensed scale and how larger events taking place in the world parallel it so closely. The chaotic winds of change can hit…and trigger a break in the foundation

of something that has been firmly rooted in place for a long time. There can be many ‘bystanders’ to the change which grew up in the shadow that through no fault of their own are taken down simply because of their close association or proximity to the fall (8 other smaller trees were uprooted or crushed under the fall of the giant tree). We may not even be aware of what happened to cause the fall because we were not looking for the symptoms of the change or the change was taking place slow enough that you just did not become conscious of it enough to act when action could have made a difference. But that change has happened…and no argument, amount of money, or action can recover it. For much of its existence, it was strong and vibrant but some small flaw or rot developed hidden in its foundation (as we discovered on a particular root of our tree) and when chance (the wind) came it was all over but the crying. So with another weekend yet again to spend running a chainsaw and packing away branches, I’ll be a little more introspective than usual donned in a safety helmet and ear protectors while mulling

past events like the rise and fall of Rome or current themes like climate change, the oil industry, and Sears stores closing. Doesn’t hurt every once in a while to wonder if the ‘trees’ standing in my personal and work life are really as strong and resilient as I think they are either. Make sure you read the signs well enough in your ‘trees’ to discover the ‘root causes’ so things do not get tipped over before you are expecting.

Softball Tournament Paradise Valley

Local teams traveled to Paradise Valley to take part in the softball tournament during the Paradise Valley 3 Cities Fair on June 24. There was eight teams who competed in total. Sorry for the missing column last week folks, I got a little too busy for my own good. I never mind being busy but the busier I get, the further behind with stuff I become. I don’t mention my regular career much, but I am employed by the Department of National Defence and have been employed as civilian tradesmen for 38 years. Recently we were winding down from the huge exercise “Maple Resolve 17”, which took place at Camp Wainwright; that combined with other upcoming exercises we were kept very busy. As a Textiles inspector/consultant, there are a lot of textiles involved in an exercise such as canvas and vinyl, just in tentage alone, there were hundreds of Modular tents set up for all involved. We will be busy right into the summer months, which by the way, will be by the time you read this column, summer starts on June 21st this year, it’s here so make the best of it. One of the downsides of being busy is that summer will breeze by very quickly making the summer seem short, and this year especially, I don’t know if that’s a good thing. The reason being is that I have officially handed in my paperwork for full retirement

One contributes a lot towards the pension, but over time it is very worthwhile. If one contributes to 35 years of service, they acquire the full and maximum pension. I reached that plateau officially over a year ago, but a few factors came into play, so I continued to work until now. I am only 61 years young, which for some I am old as dirt and to others too young to retire. However, after the 35 years of service, the pension is maxed out and will not get any better than it is, so contributions stop. Over those years I have also contributed the maximum funds into CPP, the Canadian Pension Plan; which one can now take advantage of at the age of 60 years, with a slight penalty until 65 years, one of the factors I worked over the 35-year mark slightly as the penalty will be much less. So in other words with my workforce pension and CCP I contributed into for 38 years, I can retire now with a full pension equalling my normal income as if I was working. It can be a scary procedure leaving the security of a lifetime career. For some, it may seem too early in life and may get bored but for myself, believe me, that won’t be an issue. Bow hunting season starts September 1st, and for those 38 years I have always saved and earned holidays or vacation time for, so technically, that will conveniently

start my retirement on September 1st. With hunting seasons open until December, that alone will keep me busy until winter. Then there’s my puppies, dog sledding, packing and maybe even a new litter of puppies; a full-time job alone right there. Of course, there’s mandatory fishing and ice fishing for retirees, archery and all the Honey Do’s need to get done, renovations on the house, build a new patio deck, etc. the list goes on. Come to think of it; I may have to find a part time job just to get a bit of a break, which one can also do if a new window, kennel or deck is needed. I am quite confident that boredom will NOT be an issue for me. I may not be laying back on a tropical beach with someone serving little drinks with umbrellas in them, but you know what? I’m Canadian, and I can only take the heat in short spurts. But I will be quite comfortable lying in a snow bank with a litter of puppies serving me sloppy kisses, keeping me warm at heart and spirit like a bunch of little furry, hot water bottles. I would like to say I will be really well off as I planned for retirement all my life, but, truth be known like most younger folks, there really was no big plan, and I could have done a lot more, as here I am in a blink of an eye. It’s kind of scary seeing many that did so well in the oil industry, but due to lack of planning, have no pension other than CCP and after several bad years in the industry have nothing now.

Some admit they will likely have to work now for the rest of their life, or as long as their health holds out, with an actual retirement not being a reality, or one they can live off of anyway. So for any of the younger readers, if you ever take just a little serious advice, start planning for your retirement, because no matter how young you are now, I am here to tell you it comes fast. It feels like just yesterday I was a young man starting a new family without a worry in the world, then, as if someone hit the fast forward button, here I am about to retire. Yesterday being father’s day, my daughters asked if I wanted to do anything; at the time I was sitting by the duck pond with two pups by my side watching the other pups swim after ducks, I just said nope. I was happy just doing what I was doing and could get used to it, and it cost nothing. As I enter into another adventure in my life; I am excited and look forward to it. Speaking of adventurers, I would like to say “Howdy” to all the good folks at the Battle River Lodge who follow this column and thank you! The stands were packed, and the weather was beautiful at this year’s Dewberry CPCA on Friday night June 16. Dewberry local Dallas Dick took first and second place on the first night of the races. The Dewberry Aggregate winner on Sunday, June 18 was Jamie Laboucane driving for Slidekick’s Express, second place went to Kris Molle driving for PMW Steel, and the third place winner was Wayne Knight driving for Tomtruck. The races this year were put on by

the Dewberr y Chuck wagon Racing Heritage Society, who took over from the Dewberr y Ag Societ y and was formed in January 2017. Winner Jamie Laboucane took home the silver wear, and custom made buckle belt. “Thank you to the CPCA staff and Drivers for a great show and thank you to all the people that helped put this event on. Students cheered each other on as they took part in a selection of approximately 20 games celebrating indigenous cultures at Vermilion Elementary School on June 21. A f te r j o i n i n g t h e F i r s t N at i o n s Metis-Inuit Committee and attending a professional development seminar Teacher, Janna McLaughlin, made the games for students to play throughout the year. “I feel it is really important as Canadians to know our history. The government has recognized this, and our new curriculum will be infused with a greater focus on First Nations, Metis and Inuit culture and history throughout all subject areas,” said McLaughlin. Buddy Classes read a book with

indigenous focus and took turns chall eng ing eac h ot her in t he var i ou s games. Some of the games included Run And Scream, Foot Pull, Hand Pull, Stick Pull, and Sticks In The Fist. Some used belts or dowels, but McLaughlin noted having made some of them out of antlers and plans to continue making more. “Learning about different cultures is fun! The indigenous games are challenging, and it is hard to try not to get the black one,” said Grade 3 student, Adria Carton, while playing Sticks In The Fist. Fellow Grade 3 student, Kate Farrell said, “We enjoyed learning about other cultures, and the games were the most fun part!” while playing the Hand Pull game which helps develop strength Paige Meissner and Adria Carton play Sticks in the Fist. Canada Day Message From coast to coast to coast Canadians are celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday as an important landmark in our nation’s history. Our country, compared to many countries around the world, is still in its infancy. When we look at the true history of our nation we must look back much further than 150 years to when Indigenous peoples first arrived. No trails, no trading posts greeted them. Indeed only land, water and the animals roaming the wilderness were here to welcome the Indigenous people. To say it would have been a tough existence would be an understatement however they persevered. When the first European settlers arrived in the West life was also difficult. There are numerous recorded accounts of the adventures and everyday life of our early European settlers. Migration routes became established trading routes and as years passed those trails became Highway 16 and other major roadways. Times have changed and although we no-longer gather together to build our neighbors barns or homes I would ask that we would never let pass an opportunity to help our neighbor. To those who are just arriving and making your new home in Canada – welcome. We hope that you find Canada to be a good home and community to put down new roots. I encourage you to become involved in your community. Canada is a diverse and welcoming nation and for 150 years it has embraced people from all over the world searching for a new beginning. It is my sincere hope that as we continue to grow and mature as a country, we will continue to be the warm and welcoming nation we have become known for world wide. Our Nation’s history from its beginning to present day is filled with adventure, heartbreak, sorrow, victories and celebrations. It is better than any modern day movie or story that could be told. I encourage everyone to revisit the history of our great nation which has molded and shaped each one of us. On behalf of Alison, my family and as your MLA I hope that each one

Wow! It is hard to believe that the school year will be coming to an end in just a few days. We have had another wonderful year with many amazing feats accomplished by our students and staff, and an incredible amount of forever lasting memories created. Elementary students were excited to participate in Track and Field on Friday, June 16 and were happy that all the events were finished before the rain poured down. Classmates cheered on each other during the running, jumping and throwing events. Thank you to Mr. Wasylik and the Jr. High students for running each event with proficiency and giving encouragement to all the participants. All the elementary students and helpers were treated to a hot-dog lunch with juice and dessert, and would like to thank Mrs. Gray, Mrs. Protsch and their parent helpers for the delicious lunch. Our kindergarten students have had a very busy last week of school. On Monday, June 19 they had the opportunity be grade one students for half a day in preparation for next year. On Friday, June 23 they traveled to Lloydminster for their end-of-year field trip for a fun time at “A Bit Extreme”. Excitement filled the air as families gathered in the gym with our kinder3” wide version garten students to celebrate their Kinder-

garten Graduation on Monday, June 26. The students presented the story, “The Hungry Caterpillar” followed by a PowerPoint of candid pictures from the school year. Before receiving their certificates they sang two graduation songs. Following the ceremonies the students served their guests cupcakes and juice. Middle level will finish all their exams on Tuesday, June 27. On Wednesday, June 28 they will travel to Lloydminster to see a movie and have lunch. Middle Level Awards will be held at 11:00 am in the Gathering Area on Thursday, June 29. All Middle Level and High School students will be given their report cards between noon

and 3:30 pm on Thursday. We are saddened to say good-bye to several staff members who will be leaving our school at the end of June. Mrs. Moore, Ms. Noel, Ms. Partington, Ms. VanWinssen, Ms. McKinney, Ms. Gupta and VIBE Coach Ms Crystal Jackson will all be leaving our staff to seek out new experiences. Our hallways will feel empty without each of you, as each one of you added a special touch to St. Jerome’s and we hope you come back to visit often. Even though our hearts are broken we are excited for the next adventures in your lives and pray that God will bless you abundantly in the next chapter of your journey.

St. Jerome’s wishes all of our families a relaxing, restful, and adventurous summer. We will see everyone back at school on Tuesday, September 5, with many new faces joining our community.

Physiotherapy And The Integrated Systems Model At Masterpiece Therapies

Janine Lange, owner and physiotherapist at Masterpiece Therapies physiotherapy clinic, obtained her Certificate of Completion in the Integrated Systems Model (ISM) method in May 2017. This certification marks the conclusion of an internationally-recognized three-part online and practical education series that looks at the body from head to toe. Considering the relationships that all body parts have on one another is essential to finding the primary area where treatment can be most effective. The foundation of the ISM approach is evidence-based practice. According to professionals in the field, this includes patient values and goals, research, and clinical expertise. Attention Voters – Date Set For Election!

Council for the Town of Vermilion discussed the 2017 General Municipal Election and decided the appropriate dates as provided in the local Authorities Election Act in a meeting of Council on June 21. On October 16 the Town of Vermilion will vote for new members of its Town Council; this includes one new town mayor and six new town councillors for four years. Council approved the motion that Nomination day will be held four weeks before Election Day on September 18, 2017. The Returning Officer will receive nominations at the local jurisdiction office between 10 a.m. and noon on nomination day.

On Election Day voting stations shall be kept open continuously from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. A municipality may by resolution, provide for the holding of an advance vote on any vote to be held in an election. If an advanced vote is authorized, the Returning Officer must determine the days and hours when the advance vote is to be held. In 2013 the advanced vote was held one week before the election date. In addition, a Municipality by resolution authorizes an institutional voting station. However, this has been done in the past with very little results. Mayor Bruce MacDuff announced that he will be running again for reelection as Mayor of Vermilion. Council for the Town of Vermilion appointed

Key Dates: Nomination Day – September 18, 2017 Election Day – October 16, 2017 Council Orientation – October 24, 2017 ATCO Electric Discuss Led Lights At Council ATCO Electric provided Council with a presentation on LED lighting and its renewable energy benefits for the Town. Council talked about converting approximately 687 lights in Vermilion to LED lighting. ATCO Electric representatives explained that LED lights consume 50 to 60 per cent less energy, significantly reducing electricity costs.

LED lights have a 20-year life expectancy (five times longer than HPS bulbs) reducing maintenance costs by up to 80 per cent. It was discussed that the upgrade to LEDs would save the Town approximately $1 million annually in energy and maintenance costs. “The Town owns half of our own power poles and ATCO own the other half,” explained Mayor Bruce MacDuff. Council agreed that better light quality that significantly reduces electricity costs would be a good investment, but it was agreed that more information about how much it will cost over a four year period would be. ATCO Electric agreed to return before Council on September 5 with a revised financial costs plan.

The Grade 1 classes travelled to Paradise Valley for a field trip to the Climb Through Time Museum on June 15. This field trip fit in wonderfully with their Social Studies curriculum about how changes over time have affected and influenced their families and communities today. Some of their favorite things were the school room display where they saw the old desks and chalkboards and also the old store room where they saw toys from long ago. Students found letters dated back to 1842 in the museum. At the very top of the elevator, the auger that directed the flow of grain is still present, and a window allowed the students to look all the way down the elevator to the bottom. They thought this was very neat. Overall, it was a fantastic field trip. Many thanks go out to the large number of parent volunteers that made it a huge success. On June 16, the Grade 2 classes explored Vermilion’s history through a walking field trip to the local museum. Students were on a scavenger hunt to find various items to record in their booklets. The children were thoroughly engaged and enjoyed learning about what life

was like long ago. Students did a tour through the downtown core, stopping to read about the history of the buildings. The students also had the opportunity to enjoy a pizza lunch baked in the outdoor oven. They were able to observe how this process works, which was very interesting. Thanks to the many volunteers who made the day a success. Grade 1 students visited the Vermilion Provincial Park on June 20. The students enjoyed playing summer sports, mini golfing and participating in a nature walk with our park ranger, Mr. Gary Walsh. The students had a blast searching for creepy crawlies in the river and ended the day at the splash park. The Grade 1 students were excited to participate in these fun activities as their field trip related to targets in the Physical Education and Science Programs of Studies. K ind erg ar ten Grad to o k p lac e o n June 22. Thirty-eight bright smiling faces performed five of their favorite songs from throughout the year. Each kindergarten student was presented with a certificate while Mrs. Heinrich told what each student wanted to be when they grew up. The ceremony concluded with a potluck lunch and some visiting with our new graduates. There have been a couple of changes

to our staffing for next year. We wish Mrs. Wakefield all the best as she has accepted a Grade 5 teaching position at Hughenden School. We also wish Miss Taylor good luck as she moves on to the Lloydminster Public School Division to a Grade 2 position at College Park School. Mrs. Minchin,

who is currently an instructional assistant in our school, will also be greatly missed next year. Dates to Remember: June 26 – Track and Field Day; June 28 – AR Celebration Day; June 29 – Grade 6 Farewell and the last day of school for students.

Hundreds of Softball Alberta fans are expected to flood the Pioneer Park Ball Diamonds with support as the U19 Vermilion Shadows Host Softball Provincials from July 7 - 9. Vermilion will host U19 D Girls teams from Barrhead, Bently, Bonnyville, Elnora, Lacombe, Olds, and Red Deer. Opening Ceremonies will be held on July 7, at 5:30 p.m., and added excitement can be seen on July 8, during the Skills Competition.

Realizing that they had three players in Grade 11 and the rest in Grade 12, the Vermilion U19 Shadows applied to host, and were thrilled to have been chosen. Eager and ready to play, the team is working hard to be at the top of their game. “So far in the season, they are at the top of the league. The next two weeks are crunch time with a lot of the girls having school finals and games in between. On bat and pitching they are doing really well,” said Vermilion Head Coach, Dana Gard. This year’s U19 Shadows team includes

players from Vermilion as well as Clandonald, Elk Point, and Wainwright. The team went to Provincials last year, making many familiar with the heightened atmosphere. “A chance to play at home with the home crowd in your Grade 12 year will be a nice way to go into the summer; hopefully as champs!” said Gard. Captains Tenille Chase and Ali Schmahl agreed that the team aspect is their favourite part. “Now that we are older it is a lot faster too, like any sport, it always gets better. I’ve
