Vermilion Nordic Skier Earns 7th At Nationals

Vermilion’s Samuel Ree placed 7th at the Canadian National Cross Country Ski Championships in Canmore held March 18 - 25, for the Aggregate Juvenile Boys born in 2001. The event saw 748 athletes, making it the biggest national cross country ski championships for youth in Canadian history. The venue, the Canmore Nordic Centre, was the site used during the 1988 Olympic Winter Games Nordic Events and has over 60 km of groomed trails and the largest snowmaking system in North America. “I was not expecting to place 7th. The conditions were hard, and I’ve never been to nationals before. I was expecting it to be more intense, with athletes from as far as Norway and Australia as well as all across Canada. I was really happy to share the news with my friends. I train on a race team of five people and the advantage of a small team is that I was able to have my own personal coach while I was there. It
was awesome!” said Ree. Ree performed a 5 km Interval Free Race (placing 18th), 7.5 km Interval Classical Race (placing 10th), 1.1 km Sprint Classical Race (placing 7th) and 10 km Mass Free Race (placing 28th). There were over 100 participants in each race, and after getting tangled up with another skier during the Mass Free Race, Ree’s parents and coach were overjoyed with the outcome, mentioning that he had originally hoped to place in the top 50. The Vermilion Nordic Ski Club’s Race Team includes members Sean Ulrich, Mary Ulrich, Anna Ulrich, Sam Ree, and Caleb Ree. They and other Nordic Ski Club members split into Team Pole Gliders and Team Kick Sliders continuing a kilometer challenge that started last season, aiming to total the equivalent distance of skiing from Vermilion to the South Pole. Sam Ree has been cross country skiing since he was 4 – years – old which has given him invaluable experience. Throughout the season, Ree also attended the eight Alberta Cup Races placing 3rd in the
province for his age group. He hopes that his recent accomplishments may qualify him for the Alberta Development Team allowing him the opportunity to attend cross country ski camps. “I never thought about nationals until we found out it was being hosted in Alberta; then I thought why not go,” said Ree. Ree has already set the goal of attending Nationals next year, which will be held in Thunder Bay, Ontario. He plans to begin summer training soon by running and biking for triathlon; keeping up his cardiovascular strength and fitness, as well as playing soccer. “I love the fact that cross country skiing is a simple sport. Regardless of your age you can train and go out and ski; from the time you are three or four all the way to eighty plus. It will be something I can do throughout my entire life now that I have done it as a child. It is a good way to stay healthy and keeps you really fit. Also, going to races throughout Alberta and Canada, there is a really good ski community. After a race you congratu-
late your opponents. I have made a lot of friends that way, and I get to see them throughout the winter. It’s actually fun even though you have to ski up the hills,” said Ree. “The results were extremely good; a lot more than I expected. Ree has been on the ski team for approximately six years, and I have been coaching for approximately 30 years. It was Ree’s 4th time racing in Canmore this year, so it was almost like having a home court advantage when you know the trails,” said Coach Vaughn Cooper. When asked about facing teams of 40, Cooper suggested, “Approach the race the same way; fight through whatever discomforts there are. Ree will move up to a different age category next year, but it’s just another challenge. I encourage racing smart over racing hard. Ree is getting more familiar with racing, and I am very proud of him. Clubs with all the top skiers in Canada were there, so overall 7th is amazing!” said Cooper.

Bouts of laughter filled the Kitscoty Hall on March 31, during the first performance of the Dinner Theatre, ‘Take Your Medicine,’ on March 31. With the play set in a hospital in the 1950’s; the cast worked to give their patients the best care possible, with some actors playing as many as four characters. Time-period costumes and props, as well as some interaction with the crowd, added to the experience. “Performing is fun, it’s a bit of a rush,” said Actress, Samantha Archer. “Our group has enhanced the experience; making it very enjoyable coming out to practice every week,” said Actress, Jennifer Robertson. “It’s a good feeling knowing everyone has each other’s back on stage,” said Actress, Ruth-Ann Throndson. Though patients had different outlooks on being admitted, the audience all agreed

Children dazzled listeners with 163 entries at the Vermilion Music Festival from March 2731, at the Parkview Alliance and First United Churches. Entries included piano, strings, vocal, speech, and musical theatre. “It’s nice to hear such a variety of pieces,” said Adjudicator, Joseph Fridman to piano participants. He also commended students on the challenges they took upon themselves, and made suggestions on how to bring out harmonies in songs that had been played. “The quality of performances was as good as ever. The children displayed fantastic work. We saw students memorizing whole concertos and playing at a very high level, as well
as some very promising beginners that we are looking forward to seeing over the next number of years,” said Awards Director Bernie Huedepohl. During the string session, Adjudicator, Frank Ho challenged performers to experiment with changing characters throughout string pieces exercising their musical imagination. “The festival flowed seamlessly throughout the week. We would like to thank Adjudicators, Lary Benson, Frank Ho, and Joseph Fridman for their contributions towards our festival. We appreciate you sharing your expertise and how incredibly generous you were about doing that. On March 31 the winning ticket for the 2015 Dodge Dart offered through the Vermilion Adopt-A-Home Raffle for Habitat for Humanity was drawn at Vermilion Chr ysler and Mamie Sainsbury was announced the lucky winner. Sainsbur y who already owns a vehicle said she bought the ticket to help support Habitat for Humanity. “I like giving to charity. I have been doing it all my life through other charities. After purchasing the ticket from Gwen Kibblewhite, I never gave it a second thought; I didn’t even know when the draw was happening. I’m shocked that I won, this is the first time I have ever won anything. Unfor tunately, I don’t know how to drive a standard,” laughed Sainsbury. Personally, I don’t see what all the craze surrounding drones are, but there are many people who see the technology as being a pretty cool way of spending time out in nature. But did you know there are extremely strict rules in place by Transport Canada in regards to flying drones, and those rules can carry a hefty fine if not followed? A Breath Of Fresh Air In Today’s Sports cheer together and when the game was over....even eat together. The job the coaches have done with this group is unbelievable. Like nothing I’ve ever witnessed. It was truly an experience like no other. It’s obvious that the coach has made his program fun to learn because each and every one of the players plays his system to a tee. A huge accomplishment at any level and nearly impossible and surely unheard of at such a young age. It really is a major league accomplishment that I couldn’t let go unnoticed or reported. Well done!! Also, a big thank you to Brett and Corrine Hinton for looking after the jersey’s and Tina Betz for being the website coordinator and
Chantel Betz for acting as the tournament coordinator. This season the team picked up an amazing round of 20 wins, just seven losses and four matches ended in ties. A few weeks back I got an invite to go to Edgerton and watch the young Novice Tigers from Vermilion. Known to the locals as the “Goodon Tigers.” As the title sponsor the Goodon Sponsorship Group went way above and beyond enabling the team to do more and compete more than they normally would have. And you certainly don’t put a squad like that together without the support, dedication, and togetherness of the parent group. There certainly is a need to acknowledge another sponsor, Aecom as they purchased the team jackets and track pants which is just one more show of class to add to the many already surrounding this group. I’d like to say that in my 52 years of being around the game I’ve never seen anything like this group of kids treated me to. I’ve never seen a group of young hockey players that have absorbed the teachings of their coaches and consistently applied it shift after shift- period after period- game after game!! seen a few insects in the woods, like little white moths I haven’t identified yet, although not butterflies and most likely a plant destructive species, it was just good to see life in the air. I would be much happier to see my Robins come home. I am expecting them anytime even with the snow; maybe it’s just wishful thinking… meanwhile, I will watch the little snow monkeys of mine enjoy the snow. During the snow dump, although it was a struggle to walk in, we went for one of our regular walks in the backwoods. We visited the survival shelter we had built, and I was very impressed with it, because even though the nasty wind and snow were blowing from the not as common east, the shelter was bone dry inside, so the pups and I rested there for a while. Although it was warm enough this past
Spring came…and as if on cue old man winter decided to let us know he was still around and dumped a big load of wet snow down upon us, at my place snowflakes were the size of Loonies. On Wednesday, two days into spring we got the worst, I stayed home for a puppy day, which was interesting as we could hardly walk around in that crap, not only because it was wet and heavy but it also got deep. That, of course, didn’t slow the pups down at all, they loved it, and I know they will miss it as Miss Noel and Sir Mukluk were born in the snow so to speak, as was Miss Oohohh. Miss Oohohh loves the snow, after she was born the first spring for her was hard on her, and she hung on to every last bit of snow she could bury herself in, and summer didn’t impress her at all. I know these pups will miss it, and they will be harder to keep cool this summer with their longer and thicker coats, they will definitely need their own kiddy swimming pools. They are absolutely a Northern breed dog and would not mind the snow all year long. However, although it wasn’t a terrible year for snow, I will be happy to see it go. Just hours af ter I wrote the last column on the first day of spring I saw my first gopher playing and forging in the remaining snow; I would imagine their dens may be a little wet right now. Homemade pork a n d b e a n s h ave a unique flavour that tastes different from canned beans. This recipe makes a lot, so it is perfect for large gathering for Easter with ham, potato salad and fresh salads. It is also a great dish for summer barbeques or pot luck dinners. You can even freeze the extra beans for use in chilli. The British love to have beans on toast for breakfast. If the toast is whole grain the combination of beans and toast makes a complete protein. Beans can be combined with rice, whole grain pasta or corn to make a complete protein. It is old fashioned home cooking, all natural ingredients, less sugar and no chemical food preservatives. You can feed a lot of people economically with this recipe. Even though beans are a humble food, they are very healthy. The high fiber content combined with their nutrient content make beans a heart healthy
weekend to slowly melt the snow that wind was still chilly, at least it didn’t bring new snow, it melted quite a bit making getting around a little easier. One of the things I dislike in this area during spring is the wind, some years are much worse than others, and this spring has been very windy. Years ago when I arrived in this area of Alberta a wise ole farmer told me, what I thought was just an old farmers almanac folklore, he said: “If it’s windy on Good Friday of Easter we will get 40 days of continuous windy days.” I found that hard to believe, so I kept a log and made sure to be aware first thing on Good Friday mornings, well I am sorry to report I am now a firm believer of that “folklore,” and tend to believe it to be more a fact. Sure enough, ever y windy Good Friday led to at least 40 days of wind,
although not always a constant heavy wind, it was windy and many years that wind came from the East. I dislike the winds from the East, our common winds here are from the North West, which I grew up with all over Alberta, and so with the North West winds all seems normal to me. I have noticed in years with a lot of winds from the east things are not so normal; meaning animals seem to change their normal routines and habits while feeding and moving in the habitats; which makes for interesting bowhunting in the early fall; the animals are not as predictable or prone to act as they would on normal North West wind years. That east wind tends to bring nasty weather changes as well. Now I know some of you will have to watch and be aware now of wind conditions of Good Friday which is April 14th this year, as will I be, here’s hoping that this Good Friday morning sunrise is sunny and warm, all is calm except for the serenade from momma Robin. Many still ice fishing, and it’s very good, except for the ice…use extreme caution, the Battle River broke with chunks of ice flowing, at this time foot access is even a risk on the ice. In our trip back from Calgary, a busy Hwy 2 grew tiresome rapidly, so as usual I decided to pick an off-ramp and go cross country instead. The heat that day had the melting snow running in rivers…and we got to ford one inundated intersection with the car where the incoming water pressure arriving from downhill was forcing through a culvert into a full ditch on the other side faster than it was leaving, causing a spontaneous vertical fountain. So one more check on the list for taking the road less travelled: the strange display managed to re-engage the interest of my fatigued teenage daughter and the remainder of the trip was spent

far more enjoyably in map navigation and “What are we going to see next, Dad?”. I guess that is what I’ve always liked about spring…seeing things dormant return to color and life. As a kid there was always a sense of adventure with spring. I always seemed to be spending more time outside walking in the coulee, as our calves would be coming and Dad would be turning the cow/calf pairs out of the corrals and down over the hill to the south pasture towards the Grizzly Bear Creek bridge. If the road was dry enough it would mean the first BMX ride of the year past the hairpin turn downhill all the way to the bridge…and it was almost a mile of gravity and gravel assisted velocity before you had to actually pedal. Only problem once at the bottom was return trip pushing the bike back up. Before that though it was racing sticks on the creek under the
bridge or playing fetch with the dogs until we finally got word…or it was getting dark enough…to start heading back home. The coulee side was open and sunny, covered with prairie wool and the last vestiges of drifted snow of which crocuses were already beginning to poke out in the sunniest bare patches. Sometimes we would take the shortcut up the steep hill in the pasture rather than the longer way back on the road and there always seems to be a contest along the trail to pick and carry the first small bouquet back to Mom in the house. Such a short and small little flower but meaningful to an Albertan waiting for spring to finally arrive…it is always the one to brave the cold first. How it is able to get the jump on such recently frozen ground? Still is a bit of a marvel. I’m always glad that they do.

To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 11 is hosting a ceremony at the Vermilion cenotaph at 3:45 p.m. on April 9. Legion members will be marching from the Legion to the Cenotaph followed by a moment of silence and wreath laying. Robert Snelgrove has had two replica flags made for the 151st Battalion that will be presented to the Anglican Church on April 9 at 10: 30 a.m, and to the Legion during the afternoon ceremony. The Snelgroves are also eager to watch their upcoming documentary at 7 p.m. “April 9, 1917, is the most important day in Canadian military history because it inspired the making of a nation. It was the first time Canadian forces had fought as Canadians with troops from coast to coast fighting in a cohesive formation. Both French and English attempts to take the ridge had failed, but the Canadians had devised a fantastic plan and took the hill opening up the western front. It turned things around during WWI, setting the allies on the course to victory. Though victory was achieved and international respect was earned, the battle suffered 10,602 Canadian causalities; with 3,598 killed and 7004 wounded,” said Poppy Chairman, Marcel Lefebvre. Puppeteer and theater artist Maralyn Ryan, with Kaybridge Puppets out of Edmonton, described puppetry as an extension of her theater artistry at the ‘Making The Puppet Come To Life’ workshop at the Vermilion Library on March 28, which was brought in by the Early Childhood Coalition. Ryan, who is also a director, professional actor, drama teacher and runs theater camps for children and teaches senior citizens drama, said that puppetry is an art form. “It’s not something that you can learn overnight. I act with puppets. When I work with children, I tell them they have to bring themselves to the table to give life to that puppet. It’s just like giving life to a character on stage. It’s a skill you

Ryan says that she was well received at VES, and Principal Michelle Webb was very welcoming and inviting. “ When you meet the principal of the school, usually I find you meet the school. Ryan said her life is busy and going in a lot of directions with her acting career and drama teaching. “You have to wear many hats as an artist. It is a form of theatre or performance that involves the manipulation of puppets—inanimate objects, often resembling some type of human
or animal figure. You have to focus; you can’t think of anything else for a split second. The puppeteer often speaks in the voice of the character of the puppet and then synchronizes the movements of the puppet’s mouth with the spoken part. I make all of my own puppets. The actions, gestures and spoken parts acted out by the puppets are typically used in storytelling. When the economy is suffering, the first area to be cut is the arts. Hearts And Hands Gives Back
On average the Hearts and Hands service in Vermilion receives a request for help every seven days from families and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet in the Vermilion area. The Hearts and Hands service began on February 14, 2016, after Hearts and Hands Coordinator, Betty Thomas overheard a conversation a lady was having stating that she could not afford formula for her baby. “I was sitting in an establishment in town when I overheard a lady saying that she could not afford formula for her infant and that she was forced to give the child water instead of formula. It made me think, there must be something I could do to help individuals who are in need like her, and that is when the Hearts and Hands service became a twinkle in my eye,” said Thomas. Due to a weakened economy, there are working families and individuals affected and therefore unable to provide all their basic needs. “Hearts and Hands or any food bank is
not just a means of assistance for families on social assistance but for all people who may need help. Families should not feel a sense of embarrassment for having to ask for help, that’s why there are services such as the Vermilion Food Bank or the Hearts and Hands service,” said Thomas. Since its inception, the Hearts and Hands service has made 43 deliveries. “We have helped 36 couples with children, three couples, and four single individuals since February 14, 2016. We do not require referrals from outside agencies, but we have had referrals from the health unit, schools, mental health, the medical clinic and Alberta Works,” said Thomas. “I wish we could provide regular ongoing assistance to each family, but due to the volume of need from the community it is impossible to do at this time.” Hearts and Hands do not solicit donations as they do not want to take away from other food banks in the area. However, they do accept food donations from private individuals and some cash donations. “St. Saviours Anglican Church donates any food items received through the
church and the Cantata in November 2016 donated food items. Cash donations are used to purchase gift cards, which we then use to purchase meats, vegetables, and dairy items when needed. We do not provide gift cards to recipients and do not help pay past due bills or rent; it just is not feasible to do so,” said Thomas. Each delivery the Hearts and Hands service distribute includes a cookbook to help show people cooking ideas, education and shopping hints. They also provide when available a variety of items such as flour, rice, sugar, oatmeal, pasta, cereal, powdered milk, peanut butter, soup and baked beans. Some other items include school lunch items, dairy products, bread, meat, produce, household and personal items as well as baby items. Thomas added that it is her dream to one day hold a fundraising campaign to purchase a building where all the food banks could work together. “I would like to see all the area food banks under one roof, so it is more accessible to members of the community during different days and hours of the week.

The Hearts and Hands service prides itself on the fact they provide a strict privacy policy. “All personal information is held in the strictest of confidence and delivery is available for the families convenience, but also to help protect their privacy. The only questions we ask is a name and the number of people requiring help, an address to where the delivery needs to dropped off, and whether they have allergies or certain likes and dislikes. We want to make the process as simple and as easy as possible for them. We do not pass judgment on anyone; everyone experiences difficult times in their lives. Spring Fling For Highland Dancers
The Mannville/ Vermilion Highland Dance recital featured 23 dances with dancers from the Wee Lassies group all the way to adult groups at the Lakeland College Theater on March 26. President of the Mannville/ Vermilion Highland Dance Association, Nicole Polishuk said that there was a wonderful turn out to top off the end of a great season at Spring Fling 2017. “We had a really good season. We increased the numbers in our club, and we had a lot of new young dancers join our club. We were also out in the public more; a lot more people saw us and saw what our girls could do. Our Bobby Burns and Spring Fling events were very successful,” said Polishuk. The club president added that the dance
group is always looking for interested and aspiring dancers to come out. Everyone is welcome from the age of three years up to 99 years of age. We are going to start a second set of lessons at Irma next Fall, so we are expanding, and that is exciting for us. It’s great exercise; the cardiovascular really builds up. It’s a wondering sport, in that it’s really good for you, but it’s not high impact. People get to learn dances that are traditional from hundreds of years ago. We have great parents who are supportive, easy to work with and they do a ton of work behind the scenes,” added Polishuk. Graduating dancer Marty Jackson danced at her final Spring Fling recital and said goodbye to the 29-member dance association, along with Head Instructor Jamie McIldoon, whom she worked under.
The Wee Lassies this year included Alexis Foulds, Abigail Schalin, Bryar Garnett, Mary Laurence, and Ella Eriksen, who all danced in five numbers. The recital ended with certification

A fun Mixed Bonspiel for those wanting to join curling and festivities took place at the Vermilion Curling Club running from March 31 – April 3. Teams consisted of two women and two men and the entry fee was $220 per team. There were prizes, a banquet, and of course great curling and fellowship. Live music was provided by Blackwater on Saturday night, April 1. “It was a successful season; I think everyone had a good time. It was made possible by the tremendous group of dedicated volunteers as well as our excellent ice maker and bar manager,” said Vermilion Curling Club President Andrew McCrae. As the snow keeps melting away, dozens of Alberta farmers, from Red Deer to Grimshaw are faced with a challenge they have to tackle in the days and weeks ahead: They have to get off of their land the crop they couldn’t harvest last fall due to excessive moisture with early snowfall, and seed their acres for the 2017 crop season. The issue of unhar vested acres facing the farmers is the most serious for more than a decade: A total of about 960,000 insured acres were reported in the province as unharvested for the 2016 crop season. That figure compares with an annual average of 23,000 acres for the three years prior to 2016 according to the Agriculture Financial Corporation Services (AFSC) data, the Crown Corporation that supports province’s agriculture through insurance and lending services. A similar situation had to be dealt with back in 2004, but there doesn’t seem to be detailed data with regard to that unlucky harvest season. Alber ta’s hard-hit producers are eligible to receive both indemnities and financial support with easy terms under provincially and/or federally funded programs that could come in handy as the seeding season approaches. W il d life Dam ag e C o m p e n s at i o n Program, administered by AFSC, is one of those programs that allow producers to receive compensation for their snowed-under crop if damaged by wildlife. A producer doesn’t have to have an insurance policy to benefit from this program, while certain criteria will apply to the damage assessment. In return for an assessment fee, producers can have their acres inspected by AFSC and find out whether and how much indemnity they might be entitled to due to wildlife excreta from big game (ungulates), waterfowl, bear and upland game birds, but not from mice. A minimum loss of $100 has to be established for eligibility.
Fo r t h o s e p r o d u c e r s w h o h ave insured their 2016 crops through AFSC, a simultaneous visit by an inspector for both their wildlife damage assessment and pre-harvest assessment is recommended by the Corporation if they intend to put their crop to an end use other than combining it. “ Pr e - h a r ve s t i n s p e c t i o n s a r e a requirement to establish the potential production of the crop at the time of the assessment to calculate the indemnity a producer can receive for insurance purchased,” said Daniel Graham, Manager of Financial Analysis at AFSC. “It will help a great deal to speed up inspections if producers know the location and the extent of the damage on their crops,” he added. Graham says, having completed the assessment of more than 1,900 unhar vested acre claims so far this year, AFSC inspectors will now shift their focus to pre-harvest and wildlife damage claims, especially in areas w h er e t h e n u m b er s of c l a i m s ar e particularly high. As for pro du c er s who d e c id e to combine their crops for the originally intended use they were insured for, all they need to do is to submit their revised harvested production reports (HPR) to their lo c al AFSC bran c h offices as soon as combining has been completed. That will ensure any claim can be finalized as soon as possible, AFSC of ficials say. If unhar vested acres are not combined by June 15, AFSC will assess the potential yield and proceed in finalizing any claim. Time crunch in seeding season If April weather cooperates, producers will have the opportunity to seed their acres for a 2017 crop. Mark Cut ts of provincial government’s Ag Info Centre says given the recent temperatures in the province, the danger of the soil remaining frozen after the snow has gone seems to have been pretty much averted. “Now it is going to be a matter of whether those fields will be dry enough to manage those unharvested acres and then move on to next (crop) year,” he said, referring to the possibility of moisture remaining a threat for yet another crop season. While it is still an open question if weather conditions will allow a speedy removal of the 2016 crop and a quick cultivation of land for a 2017 crop and the completion of the seeding process, for those producers who can’t seed for the next growing season, support is available, as well. Any producer who can’t seed due t o a d ve r s e we at h e r i s e n t i t l e d t o Unseeded Acreage Benefit, which comes under the annual production insurance. To be eligible for the benefit, a producer has to have 2017 annual production insurance with AFSC and acres must be unseeded by June 20 due to excess moisture. Producers will also need to have declared their selection of the crop coverage option and the number of acres to be seeded. And for farmers who have cash flow problems stemming from their unharvested acres, there are some easy credit options, as well. I had seen videos on Kathrine Switzer, who became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon as a numbered entry, and I thought she was an amazing person and I loved everything about what her vision stood for. The Grade 6 class loved their field trip to the Legislature Buildi n g i n Ed m o nto n o n Thursday, March 30. The students star ted in an interactive area that discussed the histor y and present events that take place in Alberta. The students were wowed with an interactive video about Alberta narrated by Princess Louise Caro line Alberta, as she travelled through time to share her story. The students stepped in our MLA’s shoes as they took part in a mock legislature activity. Their tour guide was fantastic as he shared his knowledge and experience with the students as they toured the majestic legislature building. The students had a great day! The Spar tan Grade 8 Badminton team had a successful weekend at the Kitscot y Tournament on Saturday, March 25. Every member of the team represented St. Jerome’s with great play. Congratulations to Jessie Bibeau and Sophie Whelan – Gold Girls’ Double, Dixie Allen – Bronze Gir ls’ Sing le and Kai d en Chase – Bronze Boys’ Single. The Jr. High team participated in a tournament in Wainwright this past weekend. Tuesday, April 4 the Jr. High team will travel to Marwayne for Highway 16 Championships and Thursday, April 6 to the ECACS Championships. The Sr. team

Marilyn, the puppeteer, enter tained the students with the story of “The Ugly Duckling”. The students thoroughly enjoyed the show and were mesmerized by the puppets. Thank you to the Early Childhood Coalition for sponsoring this fantastic event. Twenty Grade 12 students, Mr. Sader and Mr. Wheat went to the movie, “The Shack”, on Monday, March 27 as part of Mr. Sader’s Religion 35 class. They read the book in class and thought it would be great to see the movie. The movie really had the students thinking about their view of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and also their relationship with God and with others. 2 017- 2 018 K i n d e r g a r t e n O p e n House will be held at St. Jerome’s on Tuesday, April 11 at 6:30 pm for all children 5 years of age by February 28, 2018. Well, another season has ended for the Buffalo Coulee Boys. Sad to see it end but at least it ended on a high note with the Coulee winning the Mannville Tournament. The Mannville Moose Knuckles and the curling club combined to put on a great event. We thank them for all the work and planning to pull off an awesome weekend. The weekend started with an early 9 a.m. game on Saturday that saw the Coulee play a see-saw battle against the Hawks from Vermilion. The Buffalo Coulee Boys managed to edge the Vermilion crew. Tannis Henderson from Elevation, located in downtown Vermilion, took time to speak with Mrs. Hart and Miss Ishaq’s called Enterprise and Innovation 8 class about business matters. For the remainder of the year. This co-taught class will centre around students exploring, planning, creating, marketing, and distributing a product of their choice. Look for their products at the Farmer’s Market in June. They will be young Dragon’s Den contenders. Thanks to Tannis Henderson for speaking with this class. They were “inspired by Tannis’ wise words and enthusiasm,” said Mrs. Hart. Keily Stetson from Alberta Health Services recently educated Grade ten
students in Mrs. Hart’s Career and Life Management class about alcohol and drugs. She spoke about use and abuse, short and long term effects, addiction development, addiction help, and more. Also visiting CALM class was Leanne Wildeman from Lloydminster Interval Home. She presented on three topics: personal values, healthy relationships, and family/dating violence. Thanks to Keily and Leanne for sharing their knowledge. Grade 7A Leadership class, led by Mr. Zorniak, made a trip to Edmonton’s Ronald McDonald house where students learned of how and why the facility is used. Students also saw and partook in the power of volunteerism as they broke out into five groups: one group made brownies and hay stacks, the other decorated
paper lunch bags, and the other groups were assigned to sterilization of toys, play stations, and play areas on multiple floors of the building. What outstanding leadership these Grade 7s demonstrated that day! The birdies are back, but not because of spring! Badminton season is now underway as both junior and senior teams have a few practices to get into the swing. Three weekends ago Jackson Livingstone and Azro Abuzukar won Silver, Carson Livingstone won Bronze, and mixed doubles A. Ward and Chase Bowman also placed well at Kitscoty Grade 9 Tournament. Two Saturdays ago was the Grade 8 Tournament in Kitscoty. Our season’s curlers recently attended the CCAA National Curling Champion-
ships in Camrose. On Friday, March 24, they spent the day as spectators of this college-level competition along with their coaches; they got to see one practice as well as the seventh draw at the Rose City Curling Club. This past season’s coaches were Joanne McCrae (for the girl’ team), Rick McKenzie (for the mixed team), and Mr. Zorniak (for the boys’ team). Don’t forget: Mar. 27: PAC meeting (7:00 pm), Mar. 31: J. The teachers at VES spent March 24 in professional learning. Our school priorities of connectedness, response to tiered instruction, inquiry learning and First Nation, Metis and Inuit initiatives were focused on. To start our day, our Peer Instructional Coaches led professional learning about inquiry learning, and teachers explored ways to enhance tasks within their classes. We spent time analyzing student work and collaborated with each other to move the learning forward. We continued to support our learning as we dove into our resource “Seven Keys for
a Positive Learning Environment in Your Classroom” by Tom Hierck. This book reinforced the wonderful things happening for our students at VES. The Early Childhood Coalition brought in Kaybridge Puppets out of Edmonton for performances in our school on March 28. Kaybridge Puppets presented on “Tales of Sense and Nonsense”, a 40-minute puppet show with a demonstration for students in preschool to Grade 3. First, students were given a demonstration on how easy it is to make their own puppets at home. To follow, Kaybridge Puppets presented the story of “The Ugly Duckling”. Students were engaged and laughing throughout. At the end of the puppet show, the presenter from Kaybridge
Frank Pidruchney 1940 - 2017
Frank Pidruchney passed away suddenly on March 19, 2017 in Vermilion at the age of 77 years. Frank was born to Peter and Mary Pidruchney on January 19, 1940 in Mannville, Alberta. He was second oldest of four children. He married Edna Fry on October 15, 1960. They started married life in Westlock, Alberta where son Tom was born. They moved back to the family farm at Claysmore when his father Peter and grandfather Paul were tragically killed in 1961. Their union resulted in six children; Tom, James, Robert, Elaine, Dwayne and Glenn. Throughout the years Frank worked at various occupations, farming, working rigs in the oilfield, operating cat, hauling equipment, and finally becoming a Heavy Duty Mechanic. He operated a mobile unit for many years and then opened the Frank’s Field Service shop in 1980, which continues to operate. He devoted his life to ensuring his customers recieved the fastest service possible as his motto was “idle machines make no money.” Sadly he lost the love of his life Edna in 2003. He is survived by his children, Tom (Dorothy), James (Jackie), Robert (Lorinda), Elaine (Robin), Dwayne (Roxy) and Glenn (Wendi). Grandchildren Amanda (Bill) McKinnon, Peter (Katelynne), Nicole (Brad) Mullins, Victoria (George), Jason (Krista), Shane (Kristina) Kayla, Karley, Kristy, Christopher, Bryce and Bryton, as well as, 8 Great Grandchildren and sister Linda (Ken) Chernuka, numerous nieces and nephews and extended family. Also, his “adopted children” Konrad Moyer, Mike McKillop, Max McKillop and Tessa Simard and his Special Friend Carol Jackson. He was predeceased by his wife Edna, his sister Adeline and brother-in-law Keith Fooks, and his brother Ernest. A celebration of Frank’s life was held on March 23, 2017 at the Vermilion Regional Centre. The family would like to thank Dr. McLean and the nursing staff at the Vermilion Hospital for their wonderful care, Candice Anderson and her staff at the Lakeland Funeral Home, Charlene Young of Lasting Impressions and all of Frank’s friends and associates for their support to the family at this difficult time.
Puppets emphasized how important it was to talk about feelings and to remember that we will all grow up to be something great one day. The puppet show was a huge success. Home reading is an important part of learning to read fluently in the younger grades. Some of the Grade 1 students have already read over 200 books at home. We would like to thank Mrs. Christie Warawa for her generous beanie baby donation to the Grade 1 reading program. The students are absolutely thrilled. March 29 was Dress as Your Favorite Character Day. There were many different characters represented including Harry Potter, Mom, hockey players, dancers and The Little Old Lady Who Swallowed the Fly. March 30 was Interview Night. The teaching staff at VES would like to thank all the parents who came out to better assist your children in being the best that they can be.
On April 4, a potent band of athletes will be venturing forth to Edmonton to take part in the Klondike Relays. This annual track meet takes place on the U of A campus and features schools from all over Alberta. Our school will be sending a contingent of 36 runners, ball throwers, and long jumpers from Grades 4-6. They have been training hard and are very excited for the competition. The art club will display their Canada 150 art project at GET MAD night in Kitscoty. On April 26, individuals throughout Buffalo Trail will meet to celebrate the arts. Music, art and drama will be featured from schools around the division. It was baby day again at V.E.S. last week. Both babies have grown so much since the first visit back in October. The grade two classes are enjoying celebrating all the new milestones each baby reaches while learning about development and how every baby is different and is exactly how they should be. Baby Rian has decided that she prefers to walk over crawling, and while she still needs mom to hold her hands so she doesn’t fall she is determined and persistent. We are sure she will be walking in no time. Baby Elle showed the students some of her new skills as well. Her big brother has taught her to throw balls. The students had a great time catching them and rolling them back to her. She has also learned to clap and clapped as the students recited nursery rhymes to her. Both classes made a book of nursery rhymes for the babies. They learned that nursery rhymes are a great way to communicate with a baby so they made a book of their favorite nursery rhymes for each one. They worked very hard on printing and illustrating their favorite nursery rhyme and were very proud to present it to their baby.

Children roared with excitement at the Vermilion Arena on March 29, during the Vermilion Roar Lacrosse Open House. New President Ryan Adams was just as eager as the children to be back in action and was thrilled to have lots of children register for this season. Approximately 25 Tykes, 15 Novice, 22 Peewee, and 12 Bantam aged players will be starting practices April 3, and games April 24. “The children that play it love it. He can still be seen coaching the Junior team this year,” said Adams who had become involved by managing a Vermilion Roar team in previous years. Vermilion Roar Lacrosse will be hosting a Tyke Festival the first weekend in June, and the Wheatland Lacrosse Tournament the second weekend of June. “How hard do you have to throw a 40lb. stone down 160ft of ice to make it stop in the circles?” asked President, Wayne Seward, at the Afternoon Curling League Wind-Up in Vermilion on March 27. “J u s t h a r d e n o u g h ,” r e s p o n d e d Secretary, Ron Walker. Twe nt y-four c ur lin g e nt hu s i a st s attended the Wind-Up enjoying two games, lunch, and their Annual General Meeting. League members have been meeting twice weekly since October, and one member came back for the Wind-Up after having moved to Sherwood Park a couple of months ago. Members chose to enter for the year, or for each game attended for those seeking fewer obligations. The After-
noon League was open to anyone of any age wanting to have a bit of fun during the day. Their youngest attendee was 14 - years - old. Some joined for exercise and a way to keep active in the winter. Others seized the oppor tunit y for meeting people; with curlers drawing tags and changing teams each game. “ The big g est thing is the so c ial aspect. Whoever attends, we go at it,” said Seward. Providing some fun, exercise, and a great way to socialize, Afternoon League Curlers are already looking forward to starting again in October. “ We would like to send a special kudos to Rick McKenzie for making the ice this year.
