A Dewberry Theater Production To Die For

The cast members of the Dewberry Dinner Theater productions performed the play ‘A Family Reunion to Die For’ (copyright by Mike Steele and Matt Steele) to a packed theater at the Dewberry School Gym for its 12th year running on March 24 and 25. A total cast of 15 took part in the theater play directed by Cheryl Nawrot. In the play, the Knotting family holds a reunion, and the newlywed Christine Franklin is eager to show off her husband Freddie to the rest of the family. That is, until Aunt Gretchen, cousin Rachel and cousin Stefan all drop dead - victims of murder. With members of the Knotting family dropping like flies, Christine seems to be the next possible victim. To make matters worse, a thunderstorm has trapped them all in the house together with the murderer, and Freddie must find the killer before his new bride becomes a victim.

The energetic play’s interesting characters received a lot of laughs from the audience. The audience even became involved in trying to figure out who the murderer was. “It is a ver y light-hear ted murder myster y full of action,” said Orlean Woywitka, who plays the part of one of the lead characters, Christine. Woywitka said that she related to her character. “Our main goal when picking a play is to find one that has fast action, and of course a lot of Laughs! We love getting into costume and making people laugh, all the while supporting the community of Dewberry! I play Christine, the newlywed, sassy and pushy wife. She wears the pants! I told my husband I can play this part no problem,” laughed Woywitka. Everyone enjoyed a meal catered by Kari’s Country Kitchen out of Kitscoty before the show. one way or another. It’s a good show for such a small community and the mood is always light. Every Village needs an idiot and we volunteered,” laughed McDonald. The funds raised from the dinner theatre are donated back into the community of Dewberry.

Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon Tarp Auction

Bidders pledged just over $2.4 million to advertise on the canvas tarps of the 36 chuckwagons at the Calgary Stampede chuckwagon auction on March 23. The auction, which is considered to be a reflection of Alberta’s oilpatch economy, raised just under $2.3 million last year, the worst showing since 2010 when it brought in $1.97 million.

This year the auction took place with crude prices lingering below the $50 USD per barrel mark, $10 USD above what they were at this time last year. Kurt Bensmiller’s tarp was purchased by West Industrial Ltd. for $87,500 this year. It was a change from his sponsor Tsuu T’ina Nation, who backed him for the last three years and bid $120,000 for him in 2016. “We’re down a little bit from last year, but coming in blind and with the economy,

I think we did pretty good. We are excited to have West Industrial with us as our new sponsor. Kelly Sutherland was the top earner of the night, bringing in $110,000 for his last ever auction. The chuckwagon racing season starts May 30.

Coincidence Or Premonition

Last week I wrote about ways of preventing falls due to the thaw and freeze that accompanies the daytime high and night-time lows. I also stated that the Weather Network was showing temperatures above zero for the next 14 days and of course it was wrong. When I woke up Wednesday morning to a freezing rain aler t o n my phone, I wasn’t expecting roughly 10 cm of snow to accumulate throughout the day, but I should have known better as the weather in Alberta can change in the blink of an eye. When I dressed in the morning I was expecting rain and shoved on my

little black shoes I always wear, except for when I am expecting a large snowfall. I hate socks so of course, I wasn’t wearing any inside my shoes, and by the time I left the office to go home at the end of the day I was a funny sight to be seen. It very much reminded me of the day I sat in my car giggling at the lady trying to maneuver her way across the parking lot in Lloyd the week before; the only difference was I wasn’t wearing the three-inch stiletto heels. I walked out of the office door looked at the street and the huge snow pile and thought to myself ‘how can I get to my car without going over my shoes?’ The answer was pretty simple ‘I wasn’t!” I should have taken my own advice from last week and wore a more suitable choice of footwear, but guess what. Today as I sit in our nice warm, cozy

Some days I baffle myself and my inability to make the smarter choice, but in my defense, Mainstreet is plowed, and it is supposed to be spring, not winter. LOL. Is it a coincidence that last week I wrote about being careful out there and wearing proper footwear or was it a premonition I chose to ignore, but shouldn’t have. I should know better as each year back home we have what we call a Shelia’s Brush just after St. Patrick’s Day; which I hope is this year’s last rude blast from Old Man Winter as Shelia has now swept him out the door. I am ready for green grass, flowers, the sunshine, raindrops, and rainbows as Spring brings new life all around us! I’m so done with winter!

Over time I’ve learned that many of the paths we tread are transitory, like yesterday’s tracks covered by today’s new snowfall. Many of the sports fields of my youth in Vermilion no longer exist. The Grade 4 soccer tournament games played in front of the old SRP Cooper Elementary school are now trees and a park at the front of the museum. Where we played at lunch hour in trampled snow between two slo-pitch backstops for goals is now a parking lot for the Senior Centre and the Jehovah’s Witness Church. In Vermilion Soccer back in 1983, one of the first pitches Coach Jens Westergaard had the midget team use for practices is now covered up by student dormitory buildings on the west side of Lakeland College. The home field for our Vermilion Kickers Men’s soccer and the J.R.Robson Marauder Football teams is now the mass parking area for RV trailers during the Vermilion Fair…the goalposts and faint outline of the track the last reminders of the great games played by some championship teams from the 80’s and 90’s. The last practice I had ever had on that field a few of us guys scrimmaged with the women’s team only a few days before many of us travelled together to a packed Commonwealth Stadium to watch Canada play Brazil in a friendly, just days prior to the

Trail To The Mini-World Cup

1994 World Cup in the USA. Watching Eddy Berdusco from the 8th row score to tie the game 1-1 against mighty Brazil was absolutely thrilling, even more so because in a month’s time Brazil would become World Cup Champions. Arguably the best Canadian soccer game played, the t wo Olympic Women’s Bronze medals certainly right up there with it. So where are these tracks leading? Well I really don’t want to toot my own horn much but I have to a little bit to get to the destination of the story. A full 20 years after leaving the ‘Beautiful Game’ I came back to it…as much because my slo-pitch teams I had been playing on for many years wound down by player attrition and arm maladies meant my patrolling center field just wasn’t quite as easy as it used to be. But there was still some decent tread on the old ‘wheels’ and after about a year and a half of nagging by a friend in Ardrossan I finally signed up to play in Tier 1 Masters indoor soccer. My team simply got killed, game after game after game, and I wondered what in the blazes I had got myself into other than bruised and perpetually carpet burned knees. Nearing the end of that season with a goose egg in the team win column, although not having scored, I was improving. The very last game I decided that enough was enough and as it turned out I scored a hat trick to win our only game of the season. Like most people in finally achieving any success, it provides you some confidence and lasting as it turned out. The following summer thankfully the team moved to the senior division and we did much better... I was the leading scorer in the league. Two years later still improving we had moved up to the Major League in Indoor and I lead the league in scoring again. Hmmm…might be getting somewhere if I stick with it.

Now Edmonton is widely known a great sports town and obviously has hosted some pretty cool sporting events over the years. You may not be familiar with it but the bi-annual Mini-World Cup Indoor Soccer tournament hosted by the Edmonton District Soccer Association (EDSA) is one of them. The best amateur adult soccer players from across central and northern Alberta come together to play for the countries of their heritage in an atmosphere that really has to be experienced to be believed. No other sport you would play in Canada I believe, and I’ve played a lot of them, brings together the kind of passion and cultural diversity that soccer does. It is about the closest approximation to a World Cup experience you can find in Western Canada. If

you are a soccer fan you would love the intense action and atmosphere (there are 31 countries represented in the men’s event alone) that start with the opening ceremony March 28th. Back in February I was fortunate to make the senior squad for Team Canada and over the last 4 weeks we have been playing friendlies in preparation. This coming week I get to wear a Maple Leaf on the field for the very first time, I would like to think a privilege at any level. I certainly had no idea, first kicking the ball around what is now a museum and fields of my youth mostly covered or gone, that I would still be kicking a ball around now against Iraq, Egypt, and Italy. Maybe channel a little Eddy Berdusco against the Azzurri.

built daily; it sits just off the duck pond. Unless Old man winter throws another tantrum with a lot of snow, the shelter should be high enough on the bank’s edge to avoid getting flooded out. Also, on the duck pond banks along the water’s edge, there is dead super fine soft grass that we pull and throw on the bed of the lean-to, which is now knee high. During our walks, I also add more leaves to the roof. When I built it I factored in the wind conditions and sunlight, so on Saturday as the pups played in the water I sat in the lean-to watching them feeling zero wind and warm sunlight. Out of the wind in toasty sunlight and an “oh so soft” bed, I thought I would just lay down for a minute…it was so comfortable I …ZZZZ, ya, I have no idea how long I was out. However, my nap was abruptly and brutally ended by a soaking wet mop diving full force right into my face…that ‘mop’ also known as Miss Noel must have flown directly out of the pond right into my face and when she hit, she hit so hard she knocked my hat and sunglasses off, my face and head were soaked and covered with debris, and I am confident that it was duck poo!! I went from the most

The word equinox in Latin means ”equal and night.” Almost everywhere in the world today night-time and daytime are each 12 hours; meaning we have an equal amount of daylight and darkness, which also means the daylight hours will get longer now, so today March 20 the sun will have rose directly to the east and will set directly to the west. I will just be happy to have the sunlight. This weekend it was a little strange, it was like “old man winter” did not want to give into spring, although the sun was warm and the snow was melting, that wind was chilly. Old man winter threw a tantrum and let it be known with the wind. In some areas, it was unbearable and did damage, but the nice thing was the sun melted the snow fast, and the wind dried things up quicker. The pups didn’t seem to mind the wind at all, and in fact, they all went swimming. With the longer daylight hours, we will start seeing the changes of spring and perhaps a little greenery soon. With the warm sunlight water off the fields flowed into the duck pond on the home property, little streams appeared and flowed with determination, and once again the duck pond was full of water. Last fall, before freeze up, it got so dry that the duck pond dried up completely, it was the first time I have ever seen that happen however now the melting snow is replenishing the pond nicely. comfortable snooze to a full dazed sit in a millisecond. I looked over at Miss Noel now laying on my makeshift grass pillow…well, how can one get mad at a puppy with its tail wagging, a loving glint in her eyes and wearing a huge puppy smile? I just cuddled her and kept my eye out for any other water-soaked missiles. I am glad it wasn’t Sir Mukluk that dove in on me as that chunk of wooly red carries a lot of water absorbing fur, I am sure I saw the pond water level drop as he walked through it earlier. Thankfully those high winds acted like a hairdryer and dried the herd off nicely. At one time I had the four of us all sitting in the shelter watching things blow past us. It was comical to watch all three of them watching the honking geese fly or try to fly…they may have been just blown here by the winds, but it was nice to see small flocks fly by all day. T h e p u p s at 14 we e k s a r e n ow coming along with their training quite well, not as easy with two pups full of energy and curiosity, but all in all the brats are responding well. Miss Oohohh is teaching them constantly. However it seems to be all

the bad stuff; they know the “steal the glove and run like heck” game, or the “if it’s not nailed down its mine” game. The big command to learn right now is “come” as they can put on distance quite quickly now and they are not allowed on the side of the house the main rural road is on but can head in that direction very quickly. Of course, t h a t c a u s e s a h u g e p a n i c i n m e, so I have to keep an eye on them at all times. They respond well to the command “come” as good as can be expected of course that is if they don’t have a farm kitty up treed. We also attempted to go antler shed hunting on the weekend, but there is still a lot of snow in the wooded areas, and the snow drifts now mushy are extremely hard to walk in even for the pups. I made a huge horse type jingle bell to attach onto their collars, so I can hear where they all are for the most time on our walks. However, the wind on the weekend also hindered sound very well. It is still a little early for antler shed hunting for some species as many elk and mule deer are still wearing their crowns proudly. Bigger whitetail deer and moose are shedding first and still worth the trips. We will soon go out on day long adventures and look forward to it, don’t let spring pass you by you just may miss it, it’s a time of renewal and new life…enjoy.

As I write this, it is officially spring, yet the large amount of snow we recently received feels like we are really having an extended winter. I think in Canada, the first weeks of spring is really just more winter, but at least it’s now warmer winter weather. With spring comes spring cleaning, so I have been working on de-cluttering. Apparently, clutter represents postponed decision making, or maybe an inability to make decisions in the moment or clearly a lack of time and focus. It is procrastination and avoidance at its finest. The decision then becomes.... no decision. Unfortunately, there will be a day of reckoning, with postponed decisions. Oprah asked top organizing expert, Peter Walsh, why she can clean her house and in two days it’s messy again? Peter Walsh believes that being successful in house cleaning and clutter management is making sure that you always complete the

In the month of February 2017, Vermilion RCMP responded to 178 calls for service. Of those, 50 are traffic related, 33 are property crimes, 13 are false alarms, 13 are crimes against people, 10 are domestic related, 3 are related to mental health concerns, and 56 are other calls for service. cycle. This concept applies to all aspects of daily homemaking, right from making the bed when you get out to putting the all clothes away when doing laundry. We all have friends that seem to do this seamlessly, but I would not be that friend. Perfectionism can be a reason for procrastination, as we wait for the perfect block of time and to be in the right frame of mind, yes all the stars will have to line up. To overcome perfectionism, many experts suggest following the advice of the great running shoe, Nike “just do it”. To do this technique, you can start cleaning or de-cluttering an area for 15 minutes. Often once you get started, you may find that the stars did in fact line up and you are now in the zone, and want to keep going. Other people like to go from room to room, deciding that they will do a certain number of things, like 10 per room. This technique can help you get started and keep going..... or not, but at least you got something done. Another motivational tool for cleaning and de-cluttering is to visualize how you would like the area to look, and this mental image can be a great guiding force

in deciding what to keep and what to get rid of. Some people are more sentimental than others and objects for them take on memories and meaning. This type of thinking can make getting rid of clutter more difficult. Some organizing experts suggest if an item really needs to go, but if it is sentimental, then you can take a photo, to have the memory, and then let the objects go. Japanese organizing expert Marie Kondo believes that one should not have any thing in your home that does not spark joy. While you can use this as a measuring stick in helping to decide what to keep and what to get rid of, there will always be certain basic functional items, that may not spark joy, but you really should keep, such as a fry pan, a screw driver or a bath towel. William Morris, designer and the father of the Arts and Crafts movement in 1880 said ”Do not have anything in your house that your do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful”. Apparently the issue of what to keep and what should go was a topic of discussion over 130 years ago. As we sift through our possessions, deciding what things are no longer rele-

vant, to us today, we still sometimes need greater clarity on our decision making. I am not a fan of common rules like letting it go of something if I did not use in six months, or if you have two, get rid of one. I have two loaf pans and two cake pans and I use them all the time. I haven’t used my bathing suit for six months, but I have no intention of throwing it out. You may have to take time to make your own guiding rules for your decision making process. The art of Feng Shui believes that when you clear out your space you are clearing out a part of yourself. For some people this causes anxiety. If that is the case, then maybe we can think of the Feng Shui clearing away as getting rid of an undesirable or no longer needed trait? De-cluttering is a thoughtful process, full of de-coding why you have it in the first place and fortune telling if it will continue to be significant. In de-cluttering there is a letting go of hopes, beliefs, memories, disappointments and of course the money you spent on it, but in doing so; you are making more room for even more happiness and possibilities.

“Empathy is a really powerful thing,” said Live Different Speaker, Jerad Zitman, at St. Jerome’s School on March 20. Among the group of presentation speakers, Zitman suggested choosing to use empathy for good, and mentioned that people’s brains are automatically wired for empathy. “We know how to reflect the feelings of others, and choosing empathy can change the way you see the whole world,” said Zitman. It took Speaker, Emily Fraser, years to realize that her friends were willing to help those in need before she opened up and was able to connect on a deeper level. A video segment mentioned that in every frame of a person’s life there is an opportunity for empathy.

Speaker Austin Gauthier reminded the audience that Habitat for Humanity released a statistic in 2015 that 1.6 billion people in the world lack adequate housing, and offered students an opportunity to join in a home building project trip to Mexico. He continued to challenge students to open up to one another reminding them that people have more similarities than differences and that at different times people can often experience similar circumstances. “Listening is what empathy really looks like,” said Gauthier. This year’s Vermilion Region Partnership Breakfast will host ATB Financial’s Chief Economist Todd Hirsch on Thursday morning, April 6. Hirsch is a sought-after speaker on the economy, with over two decades of experience as an economist, professor, and commentator. He has worked as an economist for over 20 years, at numerous organizations including the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Canada West Foundation and the Bank of Canada. For almost a decade, Hirsch taught economics at the University of Calgary. He released his first book, The Boiling Frog Dilemma: Saving Canada from Economic Decline in 2012 and his second, Halfway Home in 2016.

Top bull riders are getting ready to compete again in eight seconds of adrenaline pumping action. This year will be the 6th annual Marwayne Professional Bull Riding (PBR) and will take place at the Marwayne Arena on April 7 and 8. “Entries are still open but we are expecting 30 riders, with some from the States and some from Australia. Top Canadian riders along with top bucking bulls will be there,” said event organizer and promoter Justin Volz. The arena ice is cleared out from the hockey season to host the annual event. In a town with a population of just over 600 people, the economy is greatly stimulated by the footfall from the PBR. Marwayne Rodeo prize money sponsorship is up this year, and doubled from last year to $10,000. “The sponsorship was a struggle, but our sponsors are sticking with us. I wouldn’t say we are out of the woods yet, but I’d say we are on the upswing. These are all professional bull-riders, the PBR monitors and selects who attends and competes. We generally have an excellent turn out every year and it’s a busy day in town,” said Volz. The gold sponsors this year are HQ Manure Management –Holowaychuk Brothers, North Central Livestock, Franklin Corral Cleaning and LD Feed and Freight. Approximately 200 people gathered at the Equine Center on March 24, for Lakeland College’s 4th Annual Beef Day in Vermilion. “We were really happy with the turnout this year,” said Instructor Geoff Brown. The Purebred Unit, Commercial Beef Unit and Research Unit showcased what the Student Managed Farm powered by New Holland produces through their breeding programs with added support from the Sheep Unit and Dairy Unit. The sale was auctioneered by A n d r e w R e e l e d e r, a n d s t u d e n t s detailed the genetics, calving ease, stature, weight, and disposition of the

animals. “The combined efforts of each unit has made today’s event possible,” said General Manager of the Purebred Unit, Teresa Mann. Dean of Agricultural Sciences Josie Van Lent was unable to at tend but passed on a message thanking the buyers and industry people for their support towards the future beef producers of Western Canada. “It has become a Student Managed Farm Day; allowing each unit to profile their product to the public. Here students can highlight the contributions of each unit of the L akeland College Student Managed Farm,” said Commercial Beef Unit Advisor, Bevin Hamilton.

‘Searching For Vimy’s Lost Soldiers’ will be airing on the History Channel Canada on April 9, at 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, and will feature Vermilion’s Robert Snelgrove and family. T h e t wo - h o ur d o c u m e nt ar y w i l l depict the Snelgrove family’s journey to France following the footsteps of their relative WWI Veteran, Thomas Alban Snelgrove. Relatives were aware that Thomas had died during the Battle of Vimy Ridge, but had no further information for nearly 100 years. “Historian Norm Christie reminded us that, ‘After 100 years, Canada is still missing 11,000 men. Thomas enlisted in the 151st Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionar y

Force in Islay, and proceeded with the 16th Canadian Scottish Regiment to France. Records showed that he was buried in a bomb crater along with his comrades. Although 12 bodies were exhumed from the crater site after the war, they failed to find the remaining 44, and as a result, they were listed a s m i s s in g an d t h e ir nam e s were commemorated on the Vimy Ridge Memorial in France. Kenneth Gilbert passed away March 22, 2017 in Wainwright at the age of 95 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Harriet Lewis; children Jane (Grant) Brydges, Marie (Don) Sather, Kenneth Gilbert, Joan (Greg) Hughes, Laura (Allen) Davey, Dorothy (Hugh) Cleland, and Hazel (Mike) Chase; 20 grandchildren; many great grandchildren;1 great great grandchild; siblings Gladys Cannan, Kay Milburn, Edith Osborn, Herbert (Jean) Gilbert, Tom (Irene) Gilbert, and Nora Osborn; and numerous nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Emma Gilbert; sister Florence Sharp; and great grandson Damon Kent. A Funeral Service will be held at the Parkview Alliance Church, 5902 -52 Avenue, Vermilion on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Vermilion Legion, Heart and Stroke Foundation, or charity of choice. Fundraising for Cancer, Hope In Motion will be hosting a Dessert Night at Dewberry Hall on April 7, from 6:30 - 9 p.m. “We know that many people in our area have had their lives turned upside down from the moment they are diagnosed with Cancer. The Dessert Night is just a way of giving back to the community and people in need, aiming to help with their day to day operations,” said Coordinator, Gary Etherington. Live local entertainment will include Rose Country and the Mennonite Choir beginning at 7 p.m. The live auction will take place at 8 p.m. featuring a range of desirable

items including ar twork, tools, and services. A silent auction, and raffle with toys are also available, so people of all ages will find things to enjoy. Ladies from within the community have volunteered to bake the assortment of homemade desserts that will also be available for purchase. “This is a positive get together; an evening of fun and placing bids, as well as a show of support for those going through or living with Cancer,” said Etherington. The proceeds will be forwarded to Haying In The 30’s and are distributed to people within Northeastern Alberta experiencing Cancer. Anyone looking to donate can call 780-847-2170.

A check for $3,000 was presented to the Vermilion & District Housing Foundation and the Living Well Modernization Project from the Vermilion Knights of Columbus during the Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast at the Vermilion Elk’s Hall on March 26. “Our Modernization Project will use these funds to go towards the building of the new rooms at the Vermilion Valley Lodge,” said the grateful Living Well Capital Campaign Chair, Brenda Lee. Free Books For Newborn Babies

The Vermilion Public Library has been providing a program called ‘Books for Babes’ and presenting reading kits for all newborns in the Vermilion area for the last 10 years. Each kit consists of a book bag, two books, a number puzzle and an alphabet puzzle, and a free one-year family membership with the Vermilion Public Library. Each kit and the membership are valued at approximately $42. “The kits are ordered and assembled by the Vermilion library staff, and are distributed by the Community Health Nurse at the time of vaccinations. A portion of the funding comes from the Vermilion and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition. The program truly follows the wellknown African saying: ‘It takes a village to raise a child’. It is our hope that this program will help families establish a strong interest in reading at this important time in their child’s life, creating a reading habit with their child and

encouraging families to view the library as a valuable resource for both entertainment and learning. We wish to spread the joy of reading!” said Vermilion Public Library Programs Coordinator Sheila Heit. Heit said there is nothing better than cuddling up with your children and sharing a story together, whether it’s one of your old favorites or a new best seller. “The feedback from the community has been wonderful, and people are always incredibly grateful to receive their kits when they come in for the vaccinations for their babies. We provide this package to all babies that are born in this area and that come here for vaccinations. We just really want to spread the news to families the value of reading. In the world we live in now, it’s great that there are so many different options for reading, like electronic books on iPads or audio. I think this is a good thing. Storybooks are a fantastic way of inspiring little imaginations, teaching children about (Pictured) Some of the books available in the Books for Babes kits. Want to learn how physical activity has a positive impact on your body? Join the 4th annual Get Out, Get Active (GOGA) Challenge. This year, 21 of the provinceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Primary Care Networks (PCNs) are challenging you to put a little step in your spring! Get Out, Get Active has grown from an Edmonton area challenge to participants from across Alberta. Starting on April 24, join your family, friends and family doctor as you virtually go on a health journey during the six-week challenge. Participants are encouraged to track and log their activity each day. They can monitor their progress online to see how far they have gone on their virtual health journey, as well as to see how their overall team is doing. Over the six weeks, a GOGA character transforms from sick to healthy as more physical activity is done. During the challenge, a pedometer or other step tracking device can be used to track physical activity. The online program can also translate time in various activities into the equivalent in steps. You do not have to be attached to a physician with a PCN to participate; anyone who wants to get more active can join. You are welcome to challenge those around you to get active with you and are encouraged to gather people to do the challenge with in order to keep yourself motivated. On Monday, March 20 our Jr. and Sr. High students were treated to an amazing present at i o n, “ L i ve D i f ferent”. Live Different is a youth empowerment organization encouraging students across Canada to find a cause, be kind, and live simply. They are about seeing change and building hope. They encourage youth to embrace a lifestyle of caring for people, not “stuff”. “Fix the Focus” – choose empathy first was one of the messages they emphasized to the students. The students really enjoyed the presentation and wished it could have gone longer. After the presentation the members of Live Different stayed and talked to a number of students. They

shared information about service projects they could join in with them to go to other countries and build houses, etc. We were seeing double, triple, and more at St. Jerome’s on Monday, March 20 as we celebrated “Multiplicity Day”. Many students participated in this Spirit Day dressing alike with classmates and friends from school. 2017-2018 Kindergarten Open House will be held at St. Jerome’s on Tuesday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m. for all children five years of age by February 28, 2018. There will be a variety of activities for your child to participate in during the Open House so please bring your child along for the evening. The Grade 7-12 Ski Trip was canceled on Thursday, March 23 due to bad road conditions and was moved to Monday, March 27. Mrs. Dieken’s Fashion Studies Class has been busy learning about fashion, colour, countering, and parts of a sewing machine and stitching. The class has completed several projects including aprons from recycled cloth; make up bags, French Hemmed pillowcases, and decorative pillow covers. If you have any fabric pieces to donate to the program it would be greatly appre-

ciated and can be dropped off at the school office. Elementary students have been busy practicing their poems for Declamation. They will recite their poems for their teachers and classmates this week. A number of students will be chosen from their class to present their poems for parents, grandparents and family members on Friday, April 7 starting at 1:15 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The Elementary will be holding their Jump Rope for Hope Event on Friday, March 31 in the afternoon. Students need to have their fundraiser envelopes in by Wednesday, March 29. St. Jerome’s Annual Gymnastics’ Day will be held on Thursday, April 13 in the afternoon. Mark your calendars and come out to cheer on your favorite House, Cartier, Fraser or Mackenzie.

Vermilion Elementary School News

On St. Patrick’s Day, the Friends’ Committee asked students and staf f to wear green. Many individuals participated, wearing an assortment of green hats, jewellery, clothing, and even dying their hair green. The Grade 1 students each made a leprechaun trap, but no one caught a leprechaun this year. The leprechauns sure made a mess in their classrooms, however. March 20 was the monthly School Council Meeting. There was a very informative presentation from VIBE coaches Alana and Pat, discussing peer aggression and how to support your children at home whether they are the aggressor, the bystander, the upstander or the target. Trustee Huedepol announced that he will not be running as a board trustee member in the fall, but would be happy to speak to anyone who may be interested in running. The Maier family won the Family Winter Fun Draw. Parents are encouraged to send photos of “Family Dinner Time” to ves.btps.ca for a chance to win a draw of a $50 McDonald’s Food gift card. Please join us at the next School Council meeting on April 25 at 7:00. VES Learning Commons (Library) had a new look this past week, with the Scholastic Book Fair. Students were thrilled to see the display of new books, posters, crafts kits, science kits, and school tools. All students from Grade 2-6 earned Accelerated Reader (AR) Book Fair

Bucks, which they used to pick out their own prize as a reward for their reading achievements. Scholastic gave back by having a draw for students who brought their family to the book fair. This year, the winner was Matt Chmielewski-Tremblay from 4B, and Ms. Birch’s classroom library. They each won $25 in free books. The book fair requires lots of volunteer help. Thank you to Deanna Zubiak, Brit Feist, Judy Smith, Nicki Ryan, Kathy Nelson, Deb DeRoo, Shannon Leonard, Lynnal Miller-Barton, Sydney Allen, Natalie Symes, and the Library Club members. On March 23, the second round of report cards went home. Parent teacher interviews will take place on March 30 between 4:30 and 8:00 in the evening. With spring, comes the much anticipated kindergarten registration. If you have a child who is five prior to March 1, 2018, they are eligible to register for kindergarten. Registration packages are now available at the office. Please stop in and pick one up. If you are new to VES or would like an opportunity to spend some extra time at the school, we invite you to attend the kindergarten Information Session and Open House, scheduled on April 6 at 7p.m. There will be activities for your children while you have an opportunity to hear about the program and ask any questions. The Spring Concert will soon be upon us. Mark your calendars - April 7 from 12-1 p.m. in the VES gym - and please join us as we celebrate Canada’s 150 birthday. Midget Tigers Journey To Provincials

Family and fans roared in the stands with posters suppor ting the Vermilion Credit Union Midget Tigers during three of their games at Provincials in Strathmore from March 23 - 24. During Game 1 against Red Deer, Vermilion’s lone goal was scored by Jarret Eyben. “The Tigers ran into a hot tender. The boys fought hard; outshooting Red Deer 55 - 32. A dis-allowed goal would have had Vermilion up 2 - 1, but instead they suffered a 4 - 1 loss,” said Larry Eyben.

A tough Game 2 was played against Serra, where the Tigers learned a lesson in discipline. They faced five power play goals against them in a 7 - 1 loss. The Tigers lone goal was scored by Chance Stepanick. Game 3 was just what they needed to stay in the running. They redeemed themselves with a 5 - 2 Tigers win against Lamont. Scoring for Vermilion were Jarret Eyben, Chance Stepanick, Denver Budzilka, Pierce Joa, and Carson Rogers.
