A crowd of approximately 120 people packed the banquet hall at the Pomeroy Inn Hotel in Vermilion to capacity at this year’s Small Business Awards Gala on October 19. “Tonight demonstrates that great things can happen in small towns,” said Chamber President Robert Ernst, as he welcomed everyone. Grace was said by Jim Storch before everyone enjoyed the roast beef dinner served by Red Feather Ridge. NewCap Radio DJs entertained as MCs for the evening. Dignitaries in attendance included County of Vermilion River Reeve Daryl

Watt, RCMP representative Constable Corey Buckingham, Mayor Bruce MacDuff and Mike Christie from Lakeland College. Mayor Bruce MacDuff congratulated all the winners and presented trophies and awards to the chosen individuals from the 39 nominees. Vermilion Chrysler took home the Business of the Year award. “I would think to thank our team who has done a great job. You couldn’t ask for better people,” said Vermilion Chrysler Owner Wes Campbell, as he collected the award. The Rookie Business of the Year award went to Crave Sandwich Shoppe. Employee of the Year was awarded to Tim Horton’s employee David Rein,

who was recognized for ‘always having a friendly face and being positive to every customer.’ Employer of the Year was awarded to Candice Anderson from Lakeland Funeral Home. Anderson, who was the organizer of the Chamber awards event, said she was very tired in the lead up to the night. “We have a great time together at Lakeland Funeral Home, we are like a family and to be nominated and win is to be like your mom,” said Anderson upon collecting her award. The Spirit of Vermilion award went to Christina’s Home Furnishings; it was said Kirby Whitlock has ‘a lot of personality, generosity and is always serving the

community with a smile on his face.’ The Junior Entrepreneur award went to Icycle Bicycle. Icycle Bicycle is a new business that sells frozen treats. Eleven-year-old Nathan and 8-yearold Laura James said they were both grateful for all the support and that they look forward to starting the business up again next year. The President’s Choice Award winner was Shelly Corbiere of Shelly’s Window Coverings.. “I am honoured with this award. I love my job and love being a mom. I also love being a part of Vermilion that encourages small businesses to help each other out,” said Corbiere, as she accepted her award. Award ceremony pictures on page 2.

The Future Of Vermilion Airport Discussed At Council

Marie Conboy Reporter

Vermilion resident and pilot Darcy Balaneski gave a presentation which discussed the economic opportunities for the Vermilion airport at the Town of Vermilion Council meeting on October 18. Three other local pilots were also in attendance. Balaneski made a presentation before Council discussing the value Vermilion’s local airport could bring to the community. “I firmly believe that Vermilion has an advantage over many smaller communities with our airport located where it is and with its potential. Successful airports are considered transportation infrastructure, just like highways, roads, and sidewalks. As a successful airport we could provide services needed in the community like Medevac aircraft services, or as a facility to bring in assistance and relief supplies when a natural disaster strikes the area. It could also act as a facility to bring business and commerce to the community, or a base for flight training so people can learn to fly in their own community. Border City Aviation (Steve Watt) is looking into basing a satellite flight training school here. It is my long-term goal to establish an ultra light flight school based here in Vermilion,” said Balaneski. “Our airport could be used as a facil-

ity to bring tourists and visitors to the community to spend money visiting the local sights, staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants and thereby greatly contributing to the local community.” he added. Balaneski also said the Vermilion Airport could be a port for aircraft in need of a place to land when the weather deteriorates and a base for agricultural aviation to provide crop spraying, pest control, and other services to farmers and residents. “It could be used as a facility for scheduled air service to bring business into the community and goods and services out or as a base for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations to be carried out by both for Canadian Forces SAR aircraft and CASARA (Civil Air Search and Rescue Association) resources. It could also be used as a recreational facility for residents to use and for pilots to fly from including ultra lights and glider operations and as a destination for school field trips, Scouts, Cubs and a potential home base for a squadron of Air Cadets,” added Balaneski. He told Council that he believes Vermilion Airport can create sustainability for future generations to enjoy. “Income could be generated from a fuel surcharge by installing a fuel system. It is

PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR LOW BACK PAIN When the fall season hits, cleaning out the camper, completing yard work and shoveling unexpected snow are top of mind. Low back injuries are common results of improper lifting, bending & twisting movements used for these activities. The good news is you are not alone if you have suffered a low back injury; according to Physiotherapy Alberta, this happens to over 80% of Canadians at some point in their lives. The bad news is pain and inflammation can persist and can limit participation in daily tasks, involvement in recreational activities, and can impact your quality of life. Physiotherapists are highly skilled licensed professionals that can perform screening tests to determine the extent of your injury, check your movements and strength, and provide hands-on treatment and recommendations that will help you get better faster. Research shows that the best way to recover is to get moving as soon as possible; resting for too long can delay healing and cause greater stiffness and pain down the road. To prevent a lower back injury, consider these three tips: 1. Remain active, 2. Use proper movement techniques, 3. Stop any activities that cause discomfort. If you sustain an injury and pain persists, consider seeing a physiotherapist for an assessment. There are options for you in Vermilion. my hope that Vermilion can incorporate a system to help make the airport more attractive to potential users and become self-sufficient from a cost perspective,” said Balaneski. Balaneski told Council that other streams of revenue could be made from hanger home lease lots, fees for commercial operations, renting out the airport to a drag racing club occasionally, encouraging UAV operators to set up shop for research/design and testing, as well as, encouraging pilots to make Vermilion a destination.

“A single visiting aircraft typically would buy $200 worth of fuel and support the local economy by shopping at local businesses utilizing local hotels and enjoying recreational facilities,” said Balaneski. The Vermilion Regional Airport was completed and opened for business in 1948. The Vermilion Municipal Airport is a paved, lighted, year-round facility with a runway measuring 3300’ x 75’. Vermilion Regional Airport offers two miles of paved runways, taxiway, and roads with lighting and NAV systems. Hanger rentals start at $70.00 a month.

L ast week was Small Business Week and in conjunction with that the Vermilion Cham ber held its Small Business Awards Gala. It was quite the event where members of our business community were honoured for all their hard work and dedication. I was nominated in the Employee of the Year category and felt honoured that members of my community and co-workers felt I was deserving enough to be nominated. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them. I will try my best to live up to their expectations in the future and continue to be myself and maintain the highest level of customer service. My Mom attended the Gala with me, and if I had been successful in winning, I would have presented my award to her as she is the person in my life who

EDITORIAL

Congratulations

has truly taught me over the years how to be a strong, hardworking, dedicated employee. My whole life I watched my Mom being one of the hardest working, most dedicated employee I have ever seen. She worked as a Nurse for many years; I think it must of been at least 50, and she had the best bedside manner towards each and every one of her patients, she never passed judgment no matter what the situation. She treated each patient with the utmost respect and compassion. She stayed long past the end of her shift to sit with patients who were passing away and never once complained or grumbled. She did it by choice not by obligation. She travelled on ambulance trips with patients to the city (4 hours each way) after already working a 12-hour shift and then when they returned she would go back to work if the need was there. She rode on the back of a snowmobile during some of the worst snowstorms just to make it in to do her shift. In my eyes, my

Mom is an amazing woman and it is by her example that today I feel I have learned her same hardworking, dedicated personality. Thank you, Mom, for teaching me how to work hard and become all that you can be. It’s said ‘you often become what you see’ and I can only hope I live up to what her expectations would be in the way I perform and treat people in my work and community every day. I would like to take this opportunity to express heartfelt congratulations to everyone who was nominated and to those who won, you all deserved it and should proud of your accomplishments. Remember the feel-good feeling you may have felt and strive each day to excel even further. Small Business Week is not just a b o u t at te n d in g a fan c y g a l a an d getting nominated by your peers; it is also a week to celebrate all the small businesses in our community. Vermilion has an amazing number of small businesses, and it continues to grow

each year. With the current economy sliding deeper into the proverbial toilet it is extremely impor tant to suppor t our LOCAL businesses as much as humanly possible. I understand it is not always possible to get everything you may need here in Vermilion, but we do have a wide variety of options to choose from, and if we do not support our local businesses, they may be forced to close their doors. And that in itself would be a disaster as we would then be forced to look elsewhere for the ser vices we could once obtain within our community. The Vermilion Voice would like to congratulate all the nominees and winners from last week’s Gala and would also like to thank our clients for your continued support, without it we could not continue to cover all of your awesome events and news stories. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask our readers to contact us if they have any events they would like covered, your event is never to small.

I’m sitting here today watching it snow, and realizing there are so many crops left to be harvested and the cattle industry have taken severe blows to its viability. We all know the value of agriculture has and our oil industry has been hit with all the talk of going green and carbon taxes taking a bite of our disposable income. My you’d wonder after all that how we could find anything to be thankful for!! I have a little slogan plaque inside my harmonica case, and I read it thoughtfully every time I play music. It says “If you want to feel rich count your blessings.” Yes, we should!! If we look at the trouble that’s happening in so many places, and for SO long, wouldn’t you think to be thankful we’re

On Being Thankful

at least not being shot at or being bombed. Take a walk around in the stores and see all the goods and such in abundance and even at the prices we can’t really afford, I guess it’s good to know they are at least there!! Last time I checked, I have a roof over my head and a nice warm place to stay in and a bed I can sleep in comfort and yes some degree of safety!! Yes, that’s nice, and I’m so thankful that at my age, I can still drive and get around on my own. That is so much to be thankful for. I play music for folks in different places that haven’t that ability through no fault of their own, and I’m so really thankful I have the ability and talent to share with them!! I can never forget the five weeks I spent in the Glenrose Hospital, and I’m really so thankful I was able to get my mobility back. You really can’t know what value something is it seems until perhaps you’ve lost it!! Like the man who thought he was so unfortunate,

The Vermilion Voice | October 24, 2016

he didn’t have any good shoes until he saw a man who had no legs. Yes, be thankful for whatever you have, just think that whatever you don’t have, there are so many in those war torn areas who don’t have even basic water, food or even anything they need to support life AT ALL!! So, I guess as I look back today on my life I can honestly say in all earnest that I have been so lucky to have lived the life I have and managed to live in a country where I could fulfill most of my dreams. I wanted to farm, and I managed to raise my family and did survive some really challenging times. Through that time I was able to learn to fly an aircraft and enjoy the thrill of that and make friends with flyers too!! It was a hard thing to do; I did enjoy hunting in my own wild country and sometimes out west. Lots of real adventures and memories!! I managed to take my boys on a fly in fishing adventure that still is a vivid memory.

I got to take trips driving down to the States and experience a few Texas and Arizona winters, well, yes I did!! I guess the ability to know about nature and all the thrill of just being able to enjoy it makes me so thankful for my childhood and my parents who made me aware of all the wonder and beauty of nature. Yes, with all the threat of a long winter and the associated trials of bad roads and cold, I guess we should be thankful for our nice warm homes and clothing that makes living here not only possible but if you’re still young and able lots of ways it can be enjoyable. I’m also so thankful to Sue here and the “Voice” for giving me this chance to do this writing. It’s been a great adventure, and yes, I’m so very thankful for this and for all the wonderful people who have expressed their thoughtfulness to compliment me. It has been truly wonderful. I’m SO thankful!!

Lakeland’s New Livestock Research Facility

Reporter

Students and dignitaries gathered at the official opening of the ‘Livestock Research Facility’ at Lakeland College in Vermilion on October 20. “Our roots began over 100 years ago in 1911 when the demonstration farm at what would be the Vermilion School of Agriculture showed examples of mixed farming operations. The generous donation of Judy Sweet and her family allowed for this remarkable facility. Our student - led operations are now able to go further with innovative research; using the cutting edge technology, they can determine which types of trials would most benefit the industry,” said Lakeland College President and CEO, Alice Wainwright-Stewart. In memory of her husband Garth Sweet, Judy donated funds from both Sportaken Holdings and The Garth Sweet Simmental Foundation. “Garth had a great interest in the research of Alberta Simmental cattle. With the modernization and expansion of this facility, Lakeland College has really honoured Garth’s dream,” said Sweet. The conversion of the former bull test

station into the Livestock Research Facility began in 2012 with the installation of ‘GrowSafe’ technology for monitoring the individual feed intake of animals. The second phase, completed in 2013 was the addition of new cattle and sheep handling systems plus a scale system. The third phase, completed in 2015, was the expansion on the east side of the building to create a demonstration space. The 1,000 square foot area includes washrooms and a lab space. Lakeland College’s Student Managed Farm houses 50 head of cattle among other livestock. The new facility allows for growth and students to participate in more applied research projects. Past projects include lamb milk replacer, heifer feed efficiency, feeder lamb rotation, beef finishing rations, and wet/dry barley feed trials. Director of Applied Research and Innovation, Diane Harms, said the new facility offers space for students to handle cattle as well as host industry extension events. It lays the foundation for growth and productivity in a really crucial industry for Canada. “This is a milestone for Lakeland College

Even though snow covers my garden I am still able to run out to it and kno ck off some snow to dig a few fresh beets and pick some kale. I already dug all the carrots, removed the tops and washed them in the washing machine and then bagged them in plastic bags and stored in the fridge. They will keep until the end of the year. All the rain this year has meant that the size of the carrots and the beets this year is truly amazing. I decided to roast several beets and found that it is handy to have them precooked in the fridge. I made a chocolate beet cake and some

Some people may think that taking a multi-vitamin pill will cover the full spectrum of their nutritional needs; however science today knows that there are many compounds called phytonutrients, found in various different kinds of vegetables and fruits in their natural forms that have amazing health benefits. These phytonutrients differ from food to food and are not found in a multi-vitamin pill. This massaged kale and beet salad is a yummy way to take your vitamins. It’s pretty red and green color would make it a great salad for Christmas dinner, but its high nutrition make it a great year round salad. To massage the kale, add the 1/4 teaspoon sea salt and in a bowl gently massage the kale for 2 – 3 minutes. This process removes bitterness and softens the kale. Add the beets and the onions. Prepare the dressing by combining all the ingredients and stirring until blended. Pour the dressing over the salad and stir slightly to combine.

Staff enjoyed visiting with Vermilion Credit Union members while handing out coffee, cookies, popcorn and gifts on October 21. International Credit Union Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948. The day is held to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history and to promote its achievements. It is a day to honour those who have dedicated their lives to the movement, recognize the hard work of those working in the credit union industry and to show the members appreciation. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the great work that credit unions are doing around the world and give members the opportunity to get more involved. Brian Jean En Route To Vermilion “Canada has an obligation to show the developing world how to transition from using dirty coal to clean coal practices. We have lots of supply, and we need to look at other options besides shutting plants down and terminating all of the jobs. This strategy would create jobs in Alber ta and create a better environment for everybody,” said Jean. Jean is a big fan of energy diversification and would like to see as many industries coming to Alberta as possible. He suggested the way to continue attracting new energy suppliers is to lower taxes, encouraging people to set up industries and create jobs. He also suggested that as Alberta’s second largest industry, a continual investment in agriculture is very important. “Agriculture employs a lot of Albertans, and as a renewable resource we

So far, the largest concerns that Jean has heard across Alberta include the proposed carbon tax, the accelerated shutdown of coal, and the tremendous fear of continued job loss. “We plan on getting rid of the carbon tax as soon as possible should we get the privilege of being elected. It is an unnecessary way of hurting hardworking Albertans and with Vermilion residents having to drive more than citizens in our major centers; the increased petroleum and heating costs are major worries for rural residents. About the accelerated shutdown of coal, I think we’re missing a tremendous opportunity here. It’s Time For A Provincial Red Tape Reduction Strategy

MLA Grant Hunter Submitted

As part of Small Business Week this month, I wanted to take the time to recognize the hard work and valuable contributions of Alberta’s entrepreneurs. It’s also important to use this week to discuss the challenges that small business owners and potential entrepreneurs are facing.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business just reported that Alberta cities no longer dominate the annual rankings of Canada’s best places to start and grow a business. Right now, many Albertan entrepreneurs feel like their governments are working against them, whether it’s through the introduction of a carbon tax, higher personal and busi-

ness taxes, a 50 per cent increase to the minimum wage, or a growing mountain of red tape. Red tape can be defined as “excessive bureaucracy, rules and formalities,” and it is often a significant impediment to people starting or running a business. Large companies hire staff to deal with a myriad of regulations, whether it be accountants, lawyers or administrators, but small business owners often have to wear all these hats at once while also doing whatever it is they went into business to do. I hope to have the opportunity to present a private member’s bill to the legislative assembly that calls for a “one-for-one rule” when making government regulations. If a regulation is introduced that imposes a new burden on a business, within a fixed period of time one or more regulations must be amended or repealed to offset the cost of the new burden. The federal Conservative government made this rule for its departments and agencies back in 2012 and then codified the rule into law in 2015. The NDP and the Liberals supported the principle behind the legislation, and my hope is that Alberta’s NDP would recognize the need for red tape reduction, as well. To be clear, this is not about axing regulations in place to protect the health and safety of Albertans. This is about making it simpler and more efficient for

small business owners to comply with regulations and complete the required paperwork. Business owners have to be careful to comply with all regulations at all levels of government, as well as follow the requirements of any professional or industry associations of which they are a part. I do commend the former provincial government for its initiative providing small businesses with a website designed to be a “one-stop shop” for information (smallbusiness.alberta.ca). But this website also serves to highlight how many different regulations small business owners need to be cognizant of. One page lists links to 12 provincial acts that are “frequently searched by small businesses” then goes on to say, “However, there are numerous Acts, Regulations and bylaws that govern starting and operating a small business in Alberta.” Other jurisdictions have formal plans in place to be mindful of the regulatory burdens placed on its citizens, and we should have something in Alberta too, especially as the government is rolling out new regulations that will affect small businesses. Let’s take the next step. After all, it’s not just the owners of small businesses that would benefit – when local businesses thrive, all Alberta consumers are better off as well.

VES Book Fair Librarian Mrs. MacMillan hosted the Semi-annual Scholastic Book Fair at Vermilion Elementary School from October 18 - 24. Older classes helped younger classes locate age-appropriate books and make up their wish lists. Lots of excitement filled the library with all of the shiny new books on display! Proceeds from the event go towards supporting Library book purchases and author visits throughout the year. “Book Fairs are our major fundraisers for the year, so we would like to thank our VES family and the community for the generous support,” said MacMillan. Just Say Hi Four hundred and twenty students from Vermilion, Mannville, and Clandonald had the opportunity to participate and interact with community members from October 17- 20, during the VIBE ‘Just Say Hi’ Campaign. Children introduced themselves at local businesses and collected colour-coded pins to show where they had been. VIBE offers youth mental wellness programs throughout the year. This campaign helped children to avoid being shy, and support the VIBE principle, ‘a connected school is a safer school’.

J.R. Robson Fall Supper Approximately 600 guests gathered at the J. R. Robson School for their 35th Annual Fall Supper on October 20. The Fall Supper acted as a fundraiser for the drama club and several sports teams. Several staff, students, and parents volunteered to cook and serve a full course roast beef dinner. “You can tell when you are served garden produce and home baking. It was a very nice meal,” said Helen Blume. Blume travelled with her friend, Eleanor Raymond from Kitscoty for her tenth year of supporting her grandchildren’s sports teams. Over supper, they had the opportunity to reminisce of when they were school age. “We would like to thank the community for their generous support,” said J.R. Robson teacher Monique Hart. Congratulations to the High School Cross Country running team for their performance at Provincials on Saturday, October 15 in Cochrane. Despite the snow in Vermilion, the weather in Cochrane was sunny and pleasantly warm. The combined efforts of Anna Ulrich, Kaylie Krys, and Anastasia McCullough brought St. Jerome’s a sixth place finish for 1A schools. Special mention to Anna Ulrich, who finished eighth out of 109 senior girls. Congratulations to all the cross-country runners on a successful season! “Just Say Hi” buttons were passed out last Monday for students to use to trade with others. St. Jerome’s elementary students were excited to trade with their friends from Vermilion Elementary School in the center of the track on Tuesday at noon recess. We also had special visitors stop by St. Jerome’s to hand out community buttons. All students who handed in three different coloured buttons were eligible for prizes donated by VIBE and the community. “Just Say Hi” is an activity organized by VIBE to help our youth feel

safe and comfortable in our community. Eva Olsen will be visiting St. Jerome’s this Thursday, October 27 at 1 p.m. to talk to our Grade 6 - 12 students. If you have never heard Eva speak please feel free to join us or plan to attend the evening event at Lakeland College on Thursday evening. Due to all the snow and hazardous road conditions most of the volleyball teams saw their tournaments cancelled for the weekend of October 14 and 15. However, the Sr. Girls and Grade 11 Girls team traveled to Forestburg on Saturday for a one-day tournament. The Sr. Girls had a successful tournament bringing home a silver medal and the Grade 11 girls came home as Consolation Champions. On Monday, October 31, students and staff of St. Jerome’s will be dressing up for Halloween. Elementary Happigrams will take place at 9:30 a.m. in the gymnasium. Elementary students will be dressing in their costumes after lunch recess and will participate in a Costume Parade at 1 p.m. in the gym followed by classroom parties and activities. Grade 6 -12 students can wear their costumes throughout the day and there will be activities taking place during the day.

WE Scare Hunger is a community initiative dedicated to collecting non-perishable food items to support local food banks and raise awareness about local hunger. The WE Scare Hunger drive will run the week of October 24-28. Webb’s Ford will be partnering with VES in both the collection and delivery of the non-perishable food items. Leading up to Halloween, Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Wakefield will be supporting a group of students to inform the students at VES of the contribution they are making supporting their local food bank. Me to We is a new club offered to students at VES in Grade 4-6 and is an opportunity to empower students both locally and globally. The drama students are busy practicing their lines and getting ready for their production on November 4 and 5. The

performance is entitled “The Velveteen Rabbit” by Lauren Mayer. November 4 is the dinner theatre with the meal being catered by Mrs. J’s Catering. Tickets for this performance are $20. November 5 is the dessert theatre with dessert catered by Mrs. J’s Catering. Tickets for this performance are $10. Tickets are on sale now at the office. We only sell 100 tickets per performance, so get your tickets early to avoid disappointment. We will be hosting a silent auction on Friday night as well. If you are interested in donating an item to the silent auction, we would greatly appreciate that. Please contact Mrs. Doherty at the school. All proceeds for this year’s drama production will go to our hot lunch program. On October 17, the School Council held its Annual General Meeting. The election of officers took place and the following positions were named: Kathy Crowe is the Chair, Angie McDonald is the Co-Chair, Danielle Eriksen is the Secretary and Darlene Gourley

is the Treasurer. The Grade 6 teachers presented their compassion and inquiry projects that are planned for the year. Trustee King gave a board report with included the committee responsibilities for each board member, and Mrs. Webb shared news from the school. The next School Council meeting is scheduled for November 21, when the Annual School Report will be shared. Join the Hot Lunch Society for a spooktacular evening. On October 28 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., there will be a family dance for $5/person. Tickets will be at the door. There will be prizes for the best individual costume and the best family costume. The Grade 2 classrooms got to meet their Roots of Empathy families last week. 2A met Baby Elle and mom Bailey while 2B met Baby Rian and mom Kim. The students learned about the babies’ temperaments and growth, and the strong attachment between mother and baby.

Mannville School News

The senior girls have been busy this month playing exhibition games and attending tournaments. The highlight of the month was when the team won the consolation Gold medal at the St. Thomas Aquinas tournament in Provost on Sept. 30/Oct. 1. On Oct. 14, in Wainwright, the girls placed 4th and have played a number of games against Kitscoty, Irma, Innisfree and St. Jeromes battling hard and splitting most of the matches with those teams. Students celebrated Thanksgiving in the Foods 20-30 class with Mrs. Christensen by planning and making a feast! They are working on the “Farm to Table” module and included fresh, local ingredients in their meal-complete with a farm fresh turkey! Kindergarten is busy as ever! The k i n d e r s h ave b e e n l e a r n i n g va r i ous tag games and warm ups during gym time with the grade ones. Some favorites have been toilet tag, pound puppies, magician tag (with magical rubber chickens of course), and freeze tag! October brings learning about fire safety, ventriloquism, pumpkins and

spiders!! In science, the Grade 1’s are continuing their unit on Color and talking about Fall. The Grade 1’s will be learning about shades, mixing, and a variety of other concepts. They have been exploring the seasonal changes in fall and how people, animals, and plants change in the environment.

Our Grade 3 class has daily Accelerated Reading time and once a week are buddied up with a Grade 8 student to read books and increase reading fluency. Many students are reading at home on a nightly basis and also taking quizzes at home, too. That’s terrific! Glance Ahead: Secondary Report Card.

org/ or contact us. As this is a new-to-us program, please bear with us as we familiarize ourselves with the process. I have personally participated (and reached my word count goal) online, but have not participated in an actual Write In. If you have any questions you may email me at amanlibassist@gmail.com and I will do my best to answer them. We would like to wish everyone a Happy and Safe Halloween, and please, watch out for the kids as they are out Trick-or-Treating. Their excitement often makes them forget the rules on crossing the street, so be extra cautious when you’re driving your own little PDCrafts PD Crafters showing off their witches, cats and bats ready for Halloween on Oct 21. ghosts and goblins around.

It certainly wasn’t the greatest weather on Friday, Oct. 14 but despite the snowy conditions 29 ladies showed up at the second Mannville Library Paint and Pour evening. As the snow continued to fall, paint brushes in hand, works of art took shape and by the end of the night these proud ladies were ready to hang their masterpieces in their homes. Special thanks to Kelly Broadhead our art instructor for sharing her expertise. To continue with the painting theme our PD Craft Day of Oct. 21 had 19 kids using templates to create pictures of witches, bats and cats which were just in time for decorating for Halloween. Coming soon is the Mannville Library’s annual Christmas raffle. This year we will be having a cash raffle with first and second prizes of cash and the third prize of a grocery hamper so make sure you drop by the library to pick up your ticket. There are a limited number of tickets being printed. On a wider note, November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo). Participants from all over the world can register to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November. Don’t let the number of words intimidate you, because it’s amazing how quickly they can add up. We would like to encourage any fiction writers (new or experienced) to join in on the fun. Our library will be a spot to Come Write In during November regular business hours. If you have any questions you may visit http://nanowrimo. Marauders Season Ends In A 30-28 Loss Against Wainwright Cathy Wolters Submitted

Momentum swings changed the mood on the field during an unusual morning football game that ended with the Vermilion Marauders on the wrong side of a 30-28 score. For the Marauders it was a disappointing end to the 2016 season as they had hoped to repeat their trip to the Wheatland consolation final, a title they claimed last year. Instead the Wainwright Commandos, who dressed just 19 players, will have a chance to claim that title. With a 20-8 lead at half time, the Marauders were in a position to keep their season alive, but that hope collided with two Commando touchdowns 12 seconds apart early in the third quarter.

Quarterback Carter Lawson scored both of them. The first came as he powered through the Marauders for a 55-yard touchdown at 8:23. He slipped on the convert attempt but still got his kick away for the convert. On the ensuring kickoff he was first downfield and ripped the ball out of Ossman Abuzukar’s hands and galloped into the end zone. He kicked the convert and the Commando had a two-point lead. Wainwright added to their lead with 3:19 left in the quarter when Lawson connected with Dixon Wood for a 20-yard touchdown. Lawson then picked up the bad snap and took it into the house for a two-point convert and a 10-point 30-20 lead. The Marauders would get closer at 8:20 of the final quarter as Pierce Joa capped a five-play drive with a seven-yard touch-

down. With a determined second effort he also scored the two-point convert putting the Marauders within two points. A fired up Vermilion defence forced the Commandos to punt on 3rd and 18. However, the punt was fumbled and Wainwright recovered. Two plays later, Joa picked up a Commando fumble on his own 24. Joa and Chilibeck would then take turns carrying the ball up the field. On 2nd and seven at Wainwright 37, the Marauders tried a reverse. The a play had earned big yards in past games, but the Commando defense got in quickly and tackled Carter Usenik for a loss putting the Marauders 3rd and 13. They set up for a field goal, but it was Usenik and not David Wilson lining up the ball. Holder Tanner Throndson flicked the snap to Usenik, but the Commandos were prepared for the trick play and four of them converged on Usenik ending the Marauder drive, and their hopes of a comeback. With their fans counting down with the clock, Lawson took a knee and the

Commandos had the berth to the consolation semi-final. Marauder points after: In his final game as a Marauder Chilibeck had 194 yards and two touchdowns. He and Scott Zielinski started as grade nines and played four fantastic seasons for the Red Machine… Grade 12 Joa scored eight points, carried for 150 yards and had a fumble recovery… Tanner Throndson also scored in his last game as a Marauder, on a 23-yard pass. He also had several tackles on special teams and defence…Ismael “Gord” Uddan got another sack… Coach Earl Weidner talked about how momentum can change a game, and the importance of coming out hard, “for everything and not just football.” It was a lesson for the team to take into next season…By the time the game started frost on the field had melted, but the sun disappeared with the first quarter. As the teams left the field, a mix of rain and snow started, mirroring the disappointment of the Marauders and their fans.

Students Get Down And Dirty At Fall Rodeo

Students travelled from all across Alberta and Saskatchewan with their rodeo clubs to Vermilion participating in the Classic Fall Rodeo hosted by Lakeland College on October 21 and 22. “It’s always a big weekend for Lakeland College. A lot of the work is done by our agricultural student clubs and the clubs receive 100 per cent of the profit back, which really helps them to get additional learning outside of the classroom at college,” said Lakeland College Instructor Robert Dixon. It’s all about living learning and the students get more experience from organizing the event themselves.” A crowd of roughly 1,800 people attended Band in the Sand to watch Clare Dunn perform at the Equine Centre in Lakeland College on Saturday night, October 22.

National Huntington Amaryllis Campaign

Angela Mouly Reporter

A table of vibrant Orange Sovereign Amar yllis bulbs welcomed patrons to the Vermilion Farmer’s Market on October 18, as par t of the National Huntington Amaryllis Campaign. Huntington Disease is a fatal, hereditary brain disorder that causes progressively devastating effects to one’s mind and body. The Huntington Society of Canada (HSC) mentions that patients with the disease suffer symptoms similar to those of Alzheimer ’s, Parkinson’s and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis simultaneously. Vermilion’s Lil Wilson has volunteered for the fundraiser for nearly 40

years. “Having seen families in our community affected by Huntington Disease has prompted me to continue raising awareness each year. I would like to thank the community for their support of this fundraiser,” said Wilson. For more information, you can call the HSC at 1-800-9987398, visit www.inspirehope.ca, or call 780-853-5479.
