Puppet Play With A Message

Puppeteer Joel Kafka’s one man Puppetual Motion show delivered a play with a message at the Vermilion Public Library on Wednesday, July 22. The show is part of a Northern Lights Library tour that

Kafka is on, and Vermilion was the fifth stop on the tour. Kafka has a background in marine biology and the theme of the show in Vermilion was water conservation. “The show is about taking care of water,” said Kafka. Children followed Kafka’s protagonist puppet, Jolanda the valley goat, on her quest to find a fresh water source in the mountains as her village has run out of

water. She meets allies as well as a disgruntled goat (Billy Goat Gruff) along the way, including a marmet who gives Jolanda the following advice: “Water always follows the path of least resistance, so should you.” When Jolanda appears to be stuck on a rock and thinks she can’t climb any higher, Billy the Kid appears and tells her she can “Defy gravity.” Jolanda is able to free herself from the

rock and climb to the top of the mountain to find a new source of water. “I use puppets to tell a story,” Kafka said. The children were invited to engage with the play through visualization and predicting outcomes. “It’s more entertaining when there is engagement with the children.” Kafka is an Edmonton-based entertainer and is the Director of Puppetual Motion. He has been performing for the past six years.

“We’re lucky it was just the door,” said Total Image Owner Elaine Gill, “Nothing was disturbed or touched. There was glass everywhere. I got a telephone call to alert me at 8 a.m. from some people who noticed when they were out for their morning walk. It ruined my day; I spent the morning cleaning up the glass. I guess it must have been fun for them to see the glass shatter.” Sammy’s Restaurant and Anthony’s Classic Grill were also targets of vandalism. “They busted open the front door and all of our tills. Each year since moving to Vermilion eight years ago, I have always eagerly awaited the arrival of the Vermilion Fair. I have enjoyed it immensely and this year was no different. Sue came to me on Monday morning and asked what I thought about putting an entry in the parade. And me being me, I quickly said “hell yes! That would be fun!” We sat at our desks brainstorming; we didn’t have a trailer to decorate or anything to pull it with so we decided to decorate my car and enter it in the decorated car category. left it in my hands to come up with an idea; and while to be honest, I had no idea what I was doing, I came up the idea of making a tree type scene with roots and old pictures showing the history of our town along with cowboy boots that would sit upon the roof of my car to try and stay within the theme of this year’s fair “Local Roots and Cowboy Boots.” The vision of what I wanted it to look like was clear in my mind, but making it happen would be another story. I ran all over town for two days trying to find the items we would need to make it happen. The finished product did “kind of” look like the pretty picture in my head, but it didn’t turn out quite the way I envisioned it. Sue with her wisdom came up with the idea of placing our paper together to show local news, and I have to say, I think it was brilliant. What better way to show local roots

Dear Editor, In last week’s edition of the Hiway 16 News, the Vermilion Voice, the Vermilion Standard and the Vegreville News Advertiser, a Letter to the Editor was published titled “Innisfree – Do Not Pay Minimum Tax”. The Council of the Village of Innisfree would like to take this opportunity to clear up any confusion surrounding these matters. The Letter to the Editor suggests the application of a minimum property tax is illegal. This is incorrect. Levying a minimum property tax is legal in accordance with Section 357(1) of the Municipal Government Act, which states, ‘Despite anything in this Division, the property tax bylaw may specify a minimum amount payable as property tax’. Alberta Municipal Affairs has approved the Village of Innisfree’s 2015 Tax Rate Bylaw and minimum tax rate.

I am not one for the rides, as I have a slight tendency to get motion sickness, and to be honest, I really don’t think the people who do enjoy them would appreciate receiving my last meal in their lap. The weather wasn’t very cooperative this year but all in all I believe their hard work was still a huge success. The pictures I have seen taken by our reporters showed lots of happy faces both young and old. Thank you for all that you do, and I can’t wait to see it all again next year!!

Mid-July has been nice to us, regard ing no major heat wave anyway, but still nice enough to hit the beach or a sand bar down at the river, and I ‘m hoping August will be as nice, with rain appreciated. Miss Pickles is doing as well as can be expected with her antics after her big operation with being spayed or fixed. This past Monday was 10 days after her operation and was time to have her staple removed. Ya…a row longer than your cell phone of huge staples. One of the doc’s at the veterinarian’s came out with forceps, scissors, wire cutter, a pliers type tool, and asked if I was going to hold her down. Noooo…I don’t think so. So they brought in an aid to help. It’s not a gory thing that bothers me, it’s the fact that gory thing was on my good buddy, so they got her laying down and looked at her belly…then looked at me! I kinna looked off into the distance and whistled and mumbled “I told her she was gonna get trouble” and proceeded to put all the blame on her. “She would not stay out of the duck pond...or slow down on the roughhousing.” In fact a shooter was at the shop and as I worked on his bow he stared out the window with wide eyes, so I had to see what she was doing. Right beside our home we have a huge old elm tree.

there were nests everywhere and they had a nasty attitude. Unprovoked they blasted out of buildings, trees and just flying by, zapping us with painful stings. Now…my demeanor when dealing with wasps and their nests is usually, if you leave me alone I will leave you alone. However because of their strange actions and temper…this was war! Sunday ZI drove into town and bought three big cans of wasp eliminator; one can spray up to 20 feet away and destroy on contact. The other spray only spayed half as far but on contact turned into a foam like shaving cream. I sprayed nests in buildings, deep in some of elm trees, and anywhere they hung out. It is not something I like to do but was beyond living in harmony. I did find a nest of our natural bumble bees and we have an understanding so they were left in peace. The bumble bee, with a nicer nature and disposition will not sting unless very provoked, who will perish also if they sting you as the stinger stays in you pumping toxins. Our mild mannered bumble is on the decline due to a bee disease to the point of being endangered, and they were our biggest pollinators for trees, plants, fruit and vegetables. We will soon have to take measures to save our bumble bee. Wasps and hornets, however, were not affected by diseases that effected bumble bee and honey bees and are thriving. Also, contrary to belief, a wasp/

There are huge branches that almost defy gravity and grow straight out for meters; a perfect place for a rope swing that I hand made a nice wooden seat for. And alongside that, a single big swinging rope with knots in it. Well here was Miss Pickles twisting up the swing round and round to let it spin. Then she jumped up and with her mouth latched on to the hanging rope with her feet well off the ground spinning her butt round and round twisting like the swing. My only comment was “I’m telling”… but alas we both got trouble…there was no mystery when she got an infection and swelling in her stitches. We were told the stitches couldn’t be removed for at least another week. So we both walked out of the vet’s with our tails tucked between our legs and well over $100.00 worth of medicines; one was a sedative/anti-inflammatory and some antibiotics…with very strict instructions. So this week is going to be a long one for her as I keep her in the shop all day, then in the evening in the house beside my couch watching TV together. NO dipping in the duck pond…NO roughhousing! I mentioned in last week’s column that we both got stung by wasps and hornets just after her operation, and all that weekend with over a half dozen stings between us. All things shift and change. It’s the natural order of things. If we refuse to update ourselves, our manner of living, then our encounters with the world become a bewildering traverse across an alien landscape beyond our understanding. Resistance to change, you might say, is futile. Except when change is counter to maintaining quality of living, that is. Except when change diminishes-or eliminates altogether-those aspects of something that ser ves us well in its current form. Except when change irrevo c ably alter s something inte gral to our identity, to our sense that, despite vast distances between us, both geographically and culturally, we share in something unique and quite priceless. Except when change leaves a void that can never again be filled. Except when change severs a

line of communication, of awareness, of pride, leaves an absence and a deafening silence in the aftermath for which we can be neither compensated nor consoled. Dramatic, I know. I make no apology for being a fierce defender of our national broadcaster and all that it has represented to me and many other Canadians for many years. The Standing Senate Committee o n Tr a n s p or t a n d C o m m u n i c at i o n (TRCM) issued its Report on the CBC this month, setting out its analysis of the current status of the corporation and offering a total of 22 recommendations to assist it and government in modernizing operations in order to successfully navigate the future. Many of the recommendations appear practical and straight-forward, but others raise alarms. Recommendation 8, for example, reads as follows: CBC/Radio-Canada divest itself of its current real estate holdings and lease facilities and office space required for its operations.

hornet does sting not bite, and can sting you as many times as they please. As I say it’s not something I usually like to do but that was unprovoked war. Won that battle and now during peacetime I will take most environmentally conscious precautions. Here is a neat little trick; dollar and hardware stores carry a fake hornet’s nest, like the baseball size grey paper style nest you see in trees and on buildings. One brand name is “Get Lost Wasps”. The wasps and hornets are very territorial so when they see these they will stay some great distance away of what they think is another colony. So I placed them in strategic areas around the yard. As an added precaution I spray them with a little OFF repellant so they won’t take it over if they realize it is empty. You will still occasional wasps and hornets on their daily duties, but it truly repels their numbers and nests. It’s nice and cool outdoors right now so I am going for a walk, see how many garter snakes I can see along the creek… find an excuse get out there!

It’s a sad and pitiable state we find ourselves facing when there seem endless funds available for waging wars against an indefinable enemy, for purchasing overpriced and underfunctioning equipment, for the unnecessar y renaming and restructuring of museums to glorify military might, for funding productions of expensive, negativity-infested marketing videos f o r g o v e r n m e n t ’s p o m p o u s s e l f pro m otio n, for ere c ting grotesque and ill-conceived monuments, for so many massively expensive but inert projects, none of which serve us, the c it izen s, w hil e CBC -w here all our voices are represented-lies writhing on life support in what is fast becoming a desolate landscape where our stories slowly dissolve to dust and scatter to distant places where they may be heard but just barely above a whisper.

Ver y early in the history of this part of the country, in 1907 the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was still east of Wainwright and the problem of crossing the formidable canyon of the Battle River, had to be addressed. The present site of the trestle was chosen and work began. A good portion of the first materials for the concrete foundation was freighted across country by horse drawn wagons and of course the necessary moving of dirt for grades and cuts was achieved by horse and man power!! If you really want to be amazed just journey west from Wainwright and picture the activity of all these men and horses doing all that work is really amazing. The trestle itself is 2775 feet long and the grades leading from either end are very high and wide. There had to be a good deal of earth moved. The trestle is 195 feet high over the river, imagine crawling around putting that trestle together.

Think of dropping a wrench out there and watching it fall almost 200 feet down to the river. The reading at the lookout states that three men drowned in the river when the scow they were on capsized and dumped them into the river. Yes, it came at a huge cost in men and materials, and the debt had a part in putting the railroad into receivership and was taken over in 1919 by Canadian National!! In early times although my dad was a real railroad fan, I never saw the structure until I started flying and for the fun of it would fly alongside and revel in the sight. Unforgettable memory. In later times the trail down to the trestle was improved and made all weather, and many times my friend Phyllis and I would make a picnic lunch and sit and watch the train come and go across. Another precious memory. In these days of giant track hoes and huge earth moving machinery we might not realize the undertaking that saw this railroad come to reality. It was so very instrumental in the settling of the whole area. Until the railroad was open there was

In this day of paved hi-ways – and all the communications we enjoy, it’s hard to realize the very real value the railroad carried!! The main line towns along the railroad serviced large areas on either side and settlers and homesteaders flooded into the country very shortly after the rail link was opened to traffic. Of course in early times the steam engine was the main power and a train of 50 or so cars was larger than average!! Since these times the diesel locomotive has replaced the steam and trains are often 100 cars more than that. Much of the rail line has been twinned, and though the trestle is only one track you can often see trains coming from either direction as they can meet on the double sections. It’s hard to imagine the increase of traffic and weight that, that old structure has to withstand now-a-days. But it must have been built many times stronger than they had realized. Any mishaps have been few and far

I tend to serve the green salad in one bowl, the meat topping in another, the grated cheese in another small bowl and

Follow the road about two miles and when it ends turn right and follow a nice gravel road to the lookout point. Unpack your lunch and surely before long you’ll see a long, long train cross the trestle. Then later you can take in the Fabyan Trading Post and find some bargains in work clothes and furniture. Then, if you feel adventurous you can follow route 14 to Irma and visit another favorite stop for me, The little antique store, “Like it Never Was” and say “Hello” to Diane and have her show you some antiques from the time of the early settling of this country.

William Crocker’s 1955 5 Star Minneapolis rarity went a distance of 51’ 11” in the Antique Tractor Pull on Friday, July 24. Photo Shannon O’Connor

The stands were full for the Antique Tractor Pull that took place on Friday, July 24 at the Vermilion Fair. There were 32 tractors said Organizer Danny Farkash and the tractor that travelled the furthest to be in the show was from Fort McMurray; a 1953 Cockshutt 50 owned by Greg Ketch. There were six classes and the winners of each class were: Class One, Boris Heshka from Ardrosson driving a rare 1950 Rockol

98. Class 2, Kevin Clark of Vermilion on the oldest tractor of the show, a 1938 John Deere B. Class 3, Dick Arie of Lloydminster driving a restored 1956, 620 John Deere. Class 4, Darcy Lencewich of Vegreville on a 1954 McCormick Super W 6 TA. Class 5, Shawn Thomas on a 1959, 830 John D e e r e. “It’s the highlight of their calendar year,” said 4-H Sheep Leader Blair Dow. “It was great to see everyone up early this morning cleaning and getting their sheep ready.” The Annual Vermilion 4-H Achievement Show and sale took place on July 21 at the Vermilion Ag Society Sheep Barn. Madison Ferguson who had her sheep Coconut up for sale said, “I’m going to

be really sad to say goodbye to Coconut when I sell him tonight.” The children did the judging themselves, they looked for longer legs and longer loins. “There’s quite a bit of meat on this one,” said one of the young judges. The sale price for the highest sheep was $500 and the lowest sale price went for $325. This year’s Vermilion 4-H Sheep Club had 18 members in total. Thirteen

Madison will be sad to say goodbye to her sheep today but it’s all part of life,” said Carlene Fergusion (Madison’s mother). Having raised their sheep from lambs to fully grown market sheep ready for the Show and Sale, the Achievement Day classes were followed by the Market Lamb Classes at the Market Lamb Sale. “They have put a lot of hard work into their lambs this year, they raised and took total responsibly for them. They breed their ewes to lamb about mid-March in order to have market lambs achieve industry standard market weights by Achievement Day which is between 105 to 115 lbs,” added Dow. Members showed off the skills and knowledge in livestock health, livestock nutrition, animal behaviour and animal handling in the show ring. “It was a better year than other years. The average selling price was better,” said assistant 4-H Sheep Leader Doug McCrae. “It’s hard to part with them, they turn into a pet. The two people who guessed the correct weight in the 50/50 raffle ’Guess The Weight Of The Seven Moms,’ were Lennie Hryciuk and Jess Ferguson.”

Preparations started early at the new community oven at 5 a.m. on July 23. “We heated the oven with the fire for 3 hours and at 8 a.m. all the fire and ash was cleaned out and the baking started. The fresh baked buns with jam were very popular; the single buns that did not sell were packed up and sold by the dozen for a complete sell through. It was a great success,” said Project Chair Craig Brown. As Open Stage Manager at the Vermilion Fair, Rick Dees handled the logistics of 20 musical acts over three days. “It’s a political role. I keep everybody happy,” Dees said. He added that despite a couple of cancellations things ran pretty smoothly. “The cancellations gave other bands an opportunity to play longer.” Dees said he likes to book a variety of acts and that during the 2014 open stage there was even a Trash band and a mosh pit. “Some of it’s a risk,” he added. “But it is an open stage.” Dees refers to the event as organic.
