Peril At The Rest ‘N Peace Hotel

The Hubbard family were facing tuff times at the Rest ‘N Peace Hotel as the evil banker Simon Snivelheart and his assistant Bungles threatened to foreclose on their property, which just so happens to sit on top a gold mine. The play, “Wait ‘Til The Sun Shines Nellie!”, put on by the J.R. Drama Players, was the first of its kind for the school in more than ten years and kept the audience in stitches as Snivelheart’s plot unfolded. Pa Hubbard had been kidnapped by the fortune teller and Nellie Hubbard’s boyfriend Hector Everworth set out to find him and help save the hotel. It wasn’t long before Snivelheart, who also had eyes for Nellie, swooped in on the hotel. The ladies were not going to let go of the place that easy and held their ground after finding the map to the gold mine below. Upon Pa’s return the hotel was saved and peace was restored for characters of the Rest ‘N Peace Hotel. Stewart Hunter, and the feast was underway. The nearly-packed house filled their bellies and sat back to watch a colourful display of traditional Highland dance. Groups 4, 5 and 6, the oldest of the dance groups, were the first to perform followed by the younger dancers led by Assistant Instructor Emma Jackson. There were also some non-traditional musical numbers which saw Group 2 dancers perform a “Hula Lassies” dance and also the Group 3 dancers danced to the rock and roll song “Girls Just Want To Have

Fun.” The sound of bagpipes filled the room as ten members of the Lakeland Pipes and Drums band performed numerous songs, delighting the ears of those in attendance. A short intermission allowed for dessert to be served followed by the second half of the performances. The night was rich in tradition for both Scotsmen and the Scottish at heart. The Mannville Vermilion Highland Dancers consist of 25 members and are under the instruction of Jamie McIldoon.

Mannville’s New Rapid Response Vehicle

Mannville Fire Chief Dez Shubert along with Ross Warren, Director of Protective Services/ County of Minburn Fire Chief presented the new Rapid Response Vehicle to the Mannville firefighters, Mannville council representatives, County of Minburn representatives and Mannville CAO James Mason on January 23 at the Mannville Fire Station. The Mannville fire department took possession of the new $168,000 vehicle in October 2014. Shubert and Warren went into great detail about the customization of the truck which was partially structured from the input of firefighters themselves to better suit the type of emergencies they attend each year. The truck was a collaborated effort of the County of Minburn, Village of Mannville, Village of Minburn and the Village of Innisfree. Thirteen Vermilion Skaters Competed In Lloydminster

Winter Walk Day is a province-wide initiative to get Albertans up and moving during the winter months. Winter Walk Day celebrates our Alberta winter while promoting the year-round health benefits of walking. If anyone in the community would like to join us with this walk, it will be Wednesday, February 4 at 1 p.m. The students and staff would like to thank Mrs. Rose Gorniak for donating 10 toboggans for our “Tobogganing Fun” program. The older kids have been pulling the younger kids at recess and they are all having a blast! The junior boys had many practices preparing themselves for their first game of basketball at E.H. Walter School in

Paradise Valley. The team consists of Curtis Ludwig, Glenn Storch, Diego Tinoco, Ethan Tobin- Gillis, Shayne Heward, Braeden Watling, Max Amero, Zack Leronowich, Tyson Default and Morgan Watling. Mrs. Barb Watling is the coach. The boys have been working hard, practicing drills and improving their skills. Have a great season boys! The weight room on the balcony of the gym has been updated with some new equipment! Kettlebells, medicine balls, resistance bands and exercise balls have been added as well as a new to us universal weight station. Instructional posters are posted to demonstrate proper use and a variety of ways to use the equipment. We are looking forward to having the students and staff access the equipment to work towards their personal fitness goals. A schedule

of supervised times is currently being drawn up. If any parents would like to help with supervision and to access the equipment as well, feel free to contact Mrs. Tara Tod for more information. The Mannville School Curlers are in full swing. Our senior high mixed team is preparing for district playoffs which are being held in Vermilion on February 12. The junior high teams are sharpening their skills for the north BTPS playoffs in Innisfree on February 5. In the meantime the curlers are enjoying playing against each other and are looking forward to playing games against Innisfree on January 26. We also have an elementary boys and girls team that are coming along great. Many of the curlers from Grades 4 - 10 will be enjoying some friendly competition at the Jim

Smith memorial bonspiel in Vermilion on February 6 and 7. On February 10, the kindergarten to Grade 6 students will be heading to the Vegreville Aquatic Center for their annual Valentine’s Day swim. They would love to have some parent helpers at the pool, however have to ask that parent volunteers drive themselves as there is limited space on the busses. Please note that the elementar y parent/teacher interviews have been changed from Tuesday, March 3 to Tuesday, March 10, 2015. With each passing day more and more news reports and RCMP aler ts pop up in emails, TV and news stories with the RCMP requiring assistance in obtaining information regarding a break and enter, assaults, armed robberies, shootings, stabbings and murders. We all know the world is filled with criminals and individuals who have a shady character but lately it seems to be on the upswing. Way to of te n h e r e at t h e of f i c e numerous emails come in from the RCMP media alerts ranging from situations as minor as a fender bender or road closure all the way to more seri-

ous crimes such as murder. Each time a repor t comes in you read it to see if it has anything involving our area or the surrounding areas, and thankfully it has been relatively quiet in our neck of the woods. In other areas of Alberta such as Three Hills, Wetaskwin, Edmonton, Spruce Grove and the list can go on and on, there have been numerous p o li c e reports asking the publics’ assistance in locating suspects, and any information which may help lead to the apprehension of a suspect involved in break ins, armed robberies, missing persons and deaths. The latest occurrence in St. Albert where Constable David Matthew Wynn was shot, and later succumbed to his injuries along with Auxiliary Constable Derek Bond being injured, during what seemed to be a routine license plate

check has sparked an outcry from the public and other multiple agencies looking for answers and tougher laws. The questions to be asked are, is there a problem with our legal system? Do we need tougher laws especially fo r r e p e at o f fe n d e r s? O r h a s o u r outright disregard for another’s well being diminished so greatly that no matter how tough the laws become we will always see a rise in the crimes around us? I don’t know if it’s because we read about it more now on a daily basis, and it’s becoming where we can no longer turn the other cheek and pretend that our s mall c o mmunit ies are a s afe haven where nothing bad will ever happen. It seems abundantly clear that there is either a problem within our legal system or maybe humanity has gone

a little stray, maybe it’s a mixture of both, either way it’s a problem which can affect anyone of us at any time without warning. Is there a solution to all the problems, I think not, but being proac tive and looking for ways to increase our community togetherness may be a good way to start. Look out for our neighbors, keep compassion in our hear ts, teac h our nex t g eneration how to care for others instead of just ourselves and maybe someday the power of caring will bring back our humanity and maybe tougher laws will not be needed. Optimism opens the eyes and hearts of many. Separate Arts And Culture Board; To Be Or Not To Be Karen Nedzielski Reporter

That was the question posed to Town of Vermilion Council last fall when the Vermilion Parks, Recreation and Culture Board discussed the issue and felt it beneficial to have the various arts and cultural groups in Vermilion report regularly or become members of the existing board. Upon request from the Park, Recreation and Culture Board, letters were sent out from the Director of Commu-

nity Ser vices to all groups involved and offered them a choice of joining the existing board or look into creating a new group. Of the seven responses, four said they would like to join the existing board, two wanted their own board and one said either option would be a possibility. Some councillors felt the arts and cultural groups may “get lost ” in the existing Parks, Recreation and Culture B oard as Coun c illor Ro ber t Pulyk stated the current make - up of the board is mainly parks and recreation

groups from the area. In regards to forming an additional board, Councillor Caroline McAulley said, “heading into a fiscal restraint, we need to be really confident that this is the best use of ‘our’ money.” Council had to decide if the Town should proceed with creating a new board for the Arts and Culture, change the existing bylaw to increase the membership to include more than two more representatives from the arts and cultural community, or have it remain the same and request the ar ts and

When it comes to selecting a cattle o ve r w i n t e r i n g s i t e, i t ’s i m p o r t a n t to factor in the proximity of nearby surface water. “Snow melt typically occurs when the ground is still frozen,” says Karen Yakimishyn, livestock environment e n g in e er, A l b er t a Agr i c ulture an d Rural Development (ARD), Red Deer. “Frozen ground limits the abilit y of runoff water to soak in and increases the flow of melt waters from the site. As such, you need to take extra consideration regarding the location of your livestock wintering site and how close you are to surface water.” Yakimishyn says there are some regulations involved when it comes to selecting an overwintering site. “Under the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA) an overwintering site, or, as it’s called in the regulations, a seasonal feeding and bedding site,

is required to be at least 30 metres from common bodies of water or the operator must ensure that runoff from the site is diverted away from the water body. The Natural Resources Conservation Board is responsible for enforcing the regulations. For more information on how their inspectors regulate wintering sites, you can contact your local NRCB field office.” The Growing Forward (GF) On-Farm Stewardship Program provides funding for overwintering site improvements that will help producers manage their wintering site, says Yakimishyn. “For more information on GF funding you can contact Diana Bingham through 310 -FARM (3276). As well, you can contact one of ARD’s confined feeding operation (CFO) extension specialists at 310-FARM or check our website for more information on the rules, as well as for our Wintering Sites and Livestock Corrals factsheet and for information on the beneficial management practices for livestock wintering sites.”

It’s not too hard to take a January with temperatures in the pluses and even higher plus weather in the long range forecast for the next week. I hope we don’t pay for it in February. The snow is actually melting and we haven’t had any for quite some time. That I will take with a smile and besides not having to plow snow, the lower snow levels make survival a lot easier for our wildlife. Speaking of wildlife I parked by the third telephone pole from my home property to admire our Snowy owl who has returned for another year, or I should say Snowy Owls as there was a pair. Both take turns perching on the same telephone pole, it seems I see them on different days, or not both on the same day, so I wonder if they have another territory they keep watch on. This one donned the spotted or small black bared markings giving it a salt and pepper look, the female, the huge male is pure white. As I admired her she cocked her head left and right and stared at me with huge bright yellow eyes. Extremely beautiful birds and I enjoy their return each year. As she sat there and watched me watching her in all her splendor, its funny but all I could think of was “can they count?” because they are always on that third telephone pole, not the second or the forth. So do they fly in and go… “one” “two” “here we are” or is it just they have uncanny directional system built in, for which we would need our GPS systems. I made every effort to go ice fishing this past weekend but a project took precedence, I was working on 12 bows for the NASP program, which is National Archery in the Schools Program. It is such a worth-

It is incorporated with the schools physical or Outdoor Ed programs. It is my humble opinion that every school should have some sort of Outdoor ED program, at least mandatory in rural schools, and would be a huge asset in city schools also. I have instructed wilderness survival weekends for several city schools, it was shocking how youngsters in Alberta have been so modernized. Many were scared of tigers and polar bears invading our camp. I spent 12 hours just setting up these dozen bows and 144 arrows to see them start this NASP program in the Wainwright school. Irma has a NASP also in their school and has progressed to national shoots. We Donate all our time and get the schools all the equipment for cost, install all the accessories, tune and do maintenance on equipment, plus an instructional night to start them off. The actual Bows are available thru N.A.S.P. at cost also...the Mathews Genesis. The Mathews Genesis bow is a very modern compound type bow, innovatively designed so anyone can shoot them regardless of age, height or weight, fun for all. People at the core of your Vermilion Folk Club have for a long while demonstrated that they know the value of live music gatherings. You’ve probably come away more than once thinking you’ve attended the best event they’ve EVER hosted. Then they announce the next show. Fortunate for music appreciators and performers alike, the fine folk of the Club continue to shine a light on great music and ensure the tradition remains eclectic and well. On February 14, they’ll welcome the much lauded James Keelaghan to the community’s Royal Canadian Legion stage. He’ll be joined by long-time musical collaborators, David Woodhead and Hugh McMillan. A thoughtful and observant lyricist, Keelaghan is counted among Canada’s most substantial singer/songwriters. His music explores relevant, timeless subjects drawing both from past and current events that connect his audiences to the things that matter in this life. Somehow he consistently manages to balance the often gravely serious with enough levity to ensure the lingering impression remains more inspiration than despair. His explorations reach deep into our collective human history, at times raising unsettling issues or asking difficult questions. The themes span from the universal to the singular, from socio-political commentary to poignantly personal encounters between ordinary people. There are songwriters who entertain and there are songwriters whose presence is a conduit engaging and connecting people. Keelaghan is at ease at their centre. When you hear him sing, you get the feeling that you, the listener, are an integral part of the story. Keelaghan’s songs----even those he selects to cover----are the songs of substance, the kind that stay with you long after the performers have packed up their gear, the stage lights have been extinguished, and the room returned to reflective silence. Keelaghan’s most recent project is a retrospective spanning his work over the

A Songwriter Cometh past 25 years. Aptly titled ‘History’, the production is comprised of a combination cd/dvd. The cd contains 18 studio recorded tunes while the dvd features the songwriter at ease in familiar surroundings, speaking about his work while providing some insight into the background of the songs. Also included in this unique package is a 28 page collection of photos and Keelaghan’s writings on songwriting, travel, and personal reflections on what he’s gleaned along the way. Sample some sounds here: http://Keelaghan.com/video-and-audio/. It was my good fortune to attend a conference a few years ago when Keelaghan facilitated a three day songwriting workshop. I observed how, with kindness and gentle

encouragement, he mentored a small group of new songwriters of varying abilities and experience. I spoke with some of them about what it meant to work with someone of his stature: ‘plenty’, was the consensus. There was a humility to his approach, they said, a way of acknowledging and guiding their efforts while building confidence. I was privileged to hear each songwriter perform after the second day, one or two with Keelaghan sitting quietly outside the spotlight, playing guitar as their backup. I can recall the warmth in that room, the togetherness. It was a testament, I thought, to a generosity of character. And, of course, an example of what becomes possible when one person commits to bringing out the best in others.

That kind of generosity of spirit emerges from Keelaghan’s music. There’s substance here. If you know the music at all, you are familiar with the tenor of his lyrics, the rich precision of his guitar work, and the resonance of his deep, baritone voice. The music, the stories, the songs emerging from them. Written with care and honesty, they are like the solid foundations of architecturally sound buildings: crafted by skilled hands using quality materials with intention to endure. Doubtless, the moon will be shining bright upon what is certain to be another inspiring and very memorable Vermilion Folk Club music night.

Kale is known as a nutrient dense food, so much so that it can easily be called a super food. Cook kale by steaming it or lightly sautéing it for optimal nutrition. Many foods have more benefits eaten raw; kale however, has more benefits eaten lightly cooked. Cooked kale can taste a bit bland, but not in this Polish Ukrainian inspired dish. This dish would be great with perogies, also known as pedaha, some cabbage rolls and a garden salad, for some home cooked deliciousness. Kale is packed with antioxidants. Kale also has anti-inflammatory properties. Kale is known to have cholesterol reducing properties. The cholesterol reducing properties are increased when kale is cooked. Its nutrient composition is such that even a small amount provides a lot of vitamins and minerals including large amounts of vitamin

K and A. Kale is also a good source of vitamin C, manganese and B6. Something that is very interesting about kale is that it has the ability to assist our body’s detoxification system by providing glucosinolates for detoxification at the genetic level. Kale also contains five known glucosinolates that our body can convert to five different cancer preventive isothiocyanates, thus reducing the risk of cancer of the breast, bladder, prostrate, ovary and colon. Yes, eat your kale. You can even turn kale into chips for a yummy snack food that tastes surprisingly good. Whenever possible buy organic kale to reduce the risk of conventional farming pesticide spray which is toxic to the human nervous system. Kale & Kolbassa 4 slices of bacon 1 yellow onion chopped 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped 1 cup garlic sausage slices (approximate) 2 cups of chopped kale 1 teaspoon dried dill

Salt and pepper to taste Fry the slices of bacon until crisp and then remove the bacon and add the chopped onion, garlic and sausage slices to the bacon fat remaining in the pan. Sauté until the onions are softened. Chop the bacon into small pieces. Remove the center stem from the kale leave and chop the kale leaves. Add the kale, dill and bacon and allow cooking just until the kale is softened. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Mannville Royal Purple Hand Out $31,000

The Mannville Royal Purple recently handed out more than $31,000 in donations to local organizations within its community. Representatives of 16 groups gathered to accept the donations on January 21 at the Mannville Elks Hall. Wanna Throw Some Mud? Are you feeling a little too neat and tidy, a little bored, and want to get your hands dirty? Try some clay - good clean clay – and do some Wheel Throwing and even some Raku and Pit or Smoke Firing. Or some Slab Building. I don’t do pottery, so all these terms are Greek to me. But I hear the Vermilion Pottery Guild members know very well what they are doing and produce some fine artifacts. The Vermilion Pottery Guild, officially formed in 2010, provides our community with opportunity to be creative and artistic while enjoying the art of pottery. The guild currently has twelve members and membership is open to anyone over 18, experienced or not. The advantage of membership is in the sharing of knowledge and equipment. That’s where the words Wheel Throwing, Raku, Pit or Smoke Firing, and Slab Building come into play. This is a busy and productive guild. In 2014, the guild held a hand building class at VES for about 60 students, tying this activity into their study of Athens history

and culture. Students from Clandonald School came to the guild studio for a two-day hand building class. Two more sessions were held at the guild for kids in hand building, where 20 children got the experience to work with clay. Ever y year the guild holds adult classes for beginners in wheel throwing with instructor Gladys Fleming from St. Paul. This will be offered again in April of 2015. Besides offering a November 2014 hand building class for adults, the guild participated in Vermilion’s Alberta Culture Days celebrations. The “Fun with Clay” session allowed 30 adults and kids to get their hands dirty and make some really nice stuff. 72 people toured their studio, watched demonstrations, and joined guild members for coffee and goodies at their open house. Guild members had the wheel spinning enough to show and sell items at “Come by the Hills” Folk Festival, the Vermilion Art Show and the Christmas Hall of Handicrafts. They also display their work at the annual quilt show and recently set up a Vermilion Pottery Guild members are, back row from left, Kristin Page and Val Smith. Darrel Howell Appointed Chair Of Lakeland College Board Of Governors Katie Ryan, Lakeland College Communications Specialist/Marketing and Enrolment Submitted

Lakeland College is pleased to announce Darrel Howell, P. Eng., is the new chair of the board of governors. Howell was designated as the chair for a three-year term effective Dec. 19, 2014 by the Ministry of Innovation and Advanced Education. “It’s a privilege to be selected. We are so fortunate to have the quality of people that we have at Lakeland. We have a tremendous board and I am excited to continue our work together. The college is a well-run and innovative institution,” says Howell. “Lakeland plays a significant role in preparing students of all ages for a career that they can move into as well-educated and highly skilled professionals. I am very proud of the college and honoured to be the chair.” Howell, a member of the board since 2012, succeeds Milt Wakefield as the new chair. He has worked in the energy sector for over 30 years in senior management and has extensive experience in strategic planning, maintenance, construction, engineering and operations, as well as financial management, internal and external communications, and community and business relationship management. Most recently, Howell was President and then Chairman of Tartan Canada Corporation. He has also worked with Flint Energy Services, Husky Energy, and Syncrude Canada. He is currently semi-retired, and doing some consulting work. “Lakeland College Board of Governors is pleased to have Darrel Howell as our new chair. He brings a wealth of knowledge, valuable leadership skills and passion to this position,” says Gary Moses, vice chair of the board. “As a longstanding supporter of Lakeland College, Darrel’s dedication and commitment are an asset to our board and to the college. I am thrilled to have Darrel’s continued involvement with our board as the new chair.” Howell says there are number of priorities the board is focused on including the selection of a new president, infrastructure maintenance and renewal, and fiscal sustainability. Ensuring leading-edge equipment, technology and instruction continue to be available to students, and building on the college’s successes are also key in the board’s work going forward, says Howell. “I think we have to improve but I think it’s more of a process of evolution than revolu-

tion. The college functions extremely well; we have exceptional programs, talented people and we are in good financial shape but we have to continue to look for new opportunities,” he says citing the increase of online and blended learning programs as examples of how Lakeland continues to innovate. The completion of the Energy Centre this spring will be an important milestone for Lakeland. When the facility is fully operational, students will be able to simulate completed heavy oil upgrading and steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) processes, as well as achieving advanced power engineering certification. “The Energy Centre is really going to put Lakeland College on the map for the oil industry,” says Howell. “We will absolutely maximize the use of this state-of-the-art facility for power engineering and heavy oil students. Students are already coming from long distances to take many of our programs, including agriculture and environmental sciences in particular, and I think we are going to see the same thing happen

with our Energy Centre. That’s really exciting and of course energy is my background, which makes it even more exciting for me.” Howell holds a bachelor’s degree and master’s of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Alberta. He previously served on the University of Calgary Senate, Alberta Chamber of Resources, Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, Construction Owners Association of Alberta and Grace United Church Central Board. Howell is also the current chair of the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation. Raine Maida, of Our Lady Peace, and singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk are headlining the 2015 President’s Gala, presented by Synergy Credit Union, on March 27. “It is an incredible honour to have Chantal Kreviazuk and Raine Maida perform at the President’s Gala in support of our students,” says Nadine Walker-Perry, manager of donor relations and research. “They are both talented musicians whose philanthropic work is inspiring and a fitting match for the President’s Gala. This event is about ensuring we can continue to make the cost of a post-secondary education more manageable for our students through our awards program.” While Kreviazuk and Maida are quick to lend their time to the studio and stage, they are equally committed to lending their help to those in need – both in Canada and internationally. In March, the couple received the 2014 Allan Waters Humanitarian Award that recognizes outstanding Canadian artists whose contributions have positively enhanced the social fabric of Canada. Kreviazuk and Maida were also recently made members of the Order of Canada for their achievements as musicians and for their extensive charitable and humanitarian work. “Not only am I able to express myself, and be able to play music for others and be creative for a living in life, but I can go to the next level and be a part of true greatness — the process of another human being’s healing, possibly playing even a

small role in improving the quality of life of another,” Kreviazuk says. War Child Canada is one of the many organizations the married couple has embraced. Kreviazuk is an honorary founder and active in various causes including women’s rights, war refugees and child education. Maida launched War Child’s Busking for Change program, in which Canadian musicians have raised money for children in the world’s most devastated regions, supporting initiatives such as the construction of schools in the Congo. Additionally the couple has recorded contributions for multiple benefit albums for War Child. “I was first drawn to music because of the inherent ‘hope’ it provided me,” Maida says. “Social activism carries that same promise and the two together have shaped and taught me more than I could ever repay.” President’s Gala tickets selling quickly Tickets for the third annual President’s Gala went on sale on Dec. 15 and already the event is more than 50 per cent sold. It is with deep sorrow that our family mourns the loss of David D. Holt. David died peacefully in his sleep on January 16, 2015: while in the exceptional care of the physicians and nurses at the ermilion health care complex. Born on October 28, 1942; Dave was a husband to Adrie and father to Jason and Justin. He was Mom’s devoted and loving companion, Jason’s mentor in life and business and Justin’s biggest fan, on and off the ice. He is loved and remembered by his Wife Adrie of Vermilion, sons Jason and Justin Holt both of Vermilion; his brothers Michael Holt of Edmonton, Bruce Holt of Calgary and Peter (Terry) Holt of Morinville; sisters Barbara (Bob) Tien of Calgary, Susan (Rob) Desbarats of Calgary; sisters-in-law Mary Anne (Steve) May of Candle Lake, SK and Joan Wintonyk of Saskatoon. He was predeceased by his parents Vincent and Irene Holt and brother-in-law Lawrence Wintonyk. He will be forever remembered in our hearts... as a man who loved his family and sought to provide them with every opportunity to cultivate a joy-filled life; woven tightly in a myriad of deep and rich experiences. Students entertained their friends and family with traditional dancing including the Mexican Hat Dance, Irish Jig, German Clapping Dance and Virginia Reel followed by demonstrations of traditional Inuit g ames. Families provid ed various traditional cultural dishes ranging from Ukrainian, Korean, English, Acadian, Finnish, Native American, Dutch, Irish, German, and more. It was a delightful afternoon and we appreciate all the time and energy spent on preparing food, time off work or away from home, and cleaning up. We have amazing families. Birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated on January 5 with a nice crowd attending, happy to visit with their friends after the Christmas break. Doreen McIntyre continues to organize the baking of cakes. On January 8, Crib Doubles were held with a good attendance. In January, one never knows what the weather will bring, anything from minus 30 to freezing rain. Elsie Quickstad was the convenor and did an excellent job with the meal. Cost Containment Measures To Help Alberta Weather Economic Storm

Pre m i er Pre nt i c e an d M i n i s ter of Finance Robin Campbell have announced that the Alberta government is implementing cost containment measures for the remainder of 2014-15 fiscal year. This includes a hiring restraint initiative to limit any growth in overall staffing costs. We’re exercising similar restraint in spending related to discretionary grants, travel, training and other related costs. In this time of caution, we must be prudent in our spending by applying an extra level of scrutiny to every dollar spent. We’re focusing on the “needs”

For weeks now, we’ve seen oil prices continue to drop. This has all of us in government concerned from a revenue perspective. Non-renewable resource revenue accounts for about 21 per cent of total revenue for our province. Bitumen and conventional oil royalties make up about 80 per cent of that. S i m p l y p u t , t h i s m e a n s t h at fo r every one dollar per barrel drop in the price of Alberta’s oil over 12 months, we receive $215 million less in revenue. To put that in perspective, for every dollar drop, we lose the equivalent revenue of about half the annual budget of the Municipal Affairs minis-

– not the “wants”. For example, hiring may still occur for positions that are critical to government operations and/ or provide frontline services to Albertans. Our expectation is that all significant government-funded agencies, boards, commissions and the SUCH sector (Schools, Universities, Colleges and health authorities) will adopt similar cost containment measures. It’s expected that oil prices will be low for some time. To help address these and other concerns leading up to Budget 2015, Premier Jim Prentice will be leading a seven-member committee m ad e u p of Cab inet mem ber s that will look at economic projections, capital and operating budgets, policy commitments, and revenue forecasts.

It will make recommendations to Treasury Board leading up to next year’s budget. By reining in unnecessary spending and applying a critical look at all expenses, Alber ta will ride out this economic storm. Our government has been clear that we will exercise fiscal prudence and discipline. This isn’t the first time we’ve faced low oil prices – nor will it be the last. By managing the factors within our control, we will come out a stronger, better province, proving once again that Albertans are resilient in the face of challenge. Rustlers Gearing Up For Second Half Tom Groat, Lakeland College Submitted

Af te r a l o n g h o l i d ay b r e a k , t h e Rustler s men’s basketball team is getting ready for a strong second half of the season. The Rustlers went into the Christmas break riding a four game winning streak . They c urrently have a 6 - 6 record and sit in fourth place in the north division of the Alberta Conference. The standings in the north division are very tight with Grand Prairie (7-5) and Edmonton Concordia (7-5) s i t t i n g t wo p o i nt s a h ead of L ake land. The first three weeks of league play will have a huge impact on the

Rustlers’ play-off picture as they play Concordia, NAIT (12- 0) and Grand Prairie (6-6) to open the second half of the season. The Rustlers were 1-5 versus these teams in the first half of the season. One of the keys to a successful second half might be the Rustlers ability to stay healthy. The Rustlers had a number of key players out with injuries in the fall term. Starting point guard Josh Magpantay missed four games with a back injury while leading scorer Stephen Jones and Evan Halyk did not play versus Keyano and The Kings College respectively. The Rustlers have bolstered were roster with the return of KJ McGrew.

O n Friday the Rustlers easily handled the Ambrose Kings 99 - 43 with all players seeing action and six players scoring in double figures. On Saturday, the Rustlers shared a scrimmage with the Can-west leading Calgary Dinos. The scrimmage provided the Rustlers with stiff competition as they ready themselves for the second half of league

play. Coach Tom Groat felt it was a valuable experience. “The Dinos are a quality CIS team with a 9-2 record. It’s great to have the opportunity to compete against strong players.” The Rustlers wrapped up their play with a game versus the SAIT Trojans. The Rustlers held a slim 30 -28 lead at half-time but a disastrous third quarter resulted in the Trojans winning 76-53. Stephen Jones had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the losing cause. The Rustlers will open the second half of league play with a home and home versus the Concordia Thunder. The Rustlers will host Concordia on Jan 16th. St. Jerome School News

Margaret McCormack, St. Jerome School Submitted

Students at St. Jerome’s have been enjoying the beautiful weather by participating in a variety of outside winter activates. They have been curling on the wonderful sheets of ice Mr. and Mrs. Moir have created for the school. They have skated and played broomball on the Town of Vermilion outside rink by the school and they have enjoyed using the snowshoes to have races and play tag. The students will continue to enjoy these activities as the weather forecast continues to look promising.

Yum! Bread, cereals, fruit, vegetables, meat, milk and extras; Macdonald ’s Family Foods had it all. The kindergarten classes visited the grocery store last week and were privileged to taste each food group. It was a good beginning to our nutrition unit. The children were excited to receive a pad and pencil to write their shopping lists. We were able to meet the new owner and welcome him to our town. Congratulations to the Jr. “A” Girls who had an incredible weekend of basketball in Ryley. The girls showed tremendous determination and excellent skills in every game bringing home gold. The Jr. “A” Boys also played in Ryley. They started off the tournament with a very close game on Friday night and

The Jr. “A” Teams were both off to Elk Point this past weekend. On Wednesday, February 4 the Grade 5 - 7 students will have the opportunity to attend the Provincial Men’s Curling Championships in Wainwright. The students are very excited to watch this high quality of curling and to cheer on their favorites.

Tough Week For Local Hockey Teams Karen Nedzielski Reporter

A t o u g h w e e k f o r l o c a l h o c key teams as the Rock faced Hillmond on January 21 and the Lashburn Flyers on January 23. The game was scoreless through the first period but the second period saw the Rock score one goal and Hillmond double up on them leaving the score 2 – 1 for the visiting team. The Rock would score one more in the third but the home team couldn’t beat back the Hillmond team, letting in 3 goals in the third, facing the 5 – 2 loss in what can be described as a very clean game, with a total of only

three penalties throughout the entire game. They faced the Flyers on January 23 where it was a bit different game for the Rock. The home team opened up the scoring in the first period and sunk two goals past the Lashburn goalie by the end of the first period. The second period saw the Flyers score five goals to the Rock’s three making the score tied at five goals a piece at the end of the second. The Rock scored one more goal but could not hold the Flyers back as they scored two goals late in the third to take the game, 7-6. The Tigers faced the Wainwright
