The Two True Meanings of Christmas This past week there were a number of Christmas concerts taking place in the Vermilion area including the St. Jerome’s Kindergarten to Grade 5 concert held at the Alumni Theatre on December 18 (pictured above). It was also the end of the 2014 Santa Anonymous food and toy drive which proved to be another huge success as seen in the second photo. Both photos depict the true meaning of Christmas. Shopping Spree At McDonald’s Store

Larry Bingham and Jack Seewalt, co-chairs from the Knights of Columbus, were on hand to welcome those in attendance at their annual shopping spree event on December 18 at McDonalds’s Family Foods. Alison Betz, the prize winner scoped out the store ahead of time to ensure she knew what she wanted to grab first, as three minutes isn’t very long to fill five carts worth of groceries to add up to as close to $1,000. Bet z kept what she needed and made a generous donation to Lynda Moses for the Ron Moses Community Christmas Dinner on December 25 and donated the rest to the Vermilion Food Bank. McDonald’s Family Foods kindly of fered to work with the Knights of Colum bus on this sho p ping s pree and the new owner, Glynn McDona l d g ave t h e K n i g ht s a r e b ate o n their purchase that would enable the Knights to continue to help with various youth activities that are applied for su c h as Cad et s, c hur c h yout h groups, the museum roof fund, and the local schools. The only items Betz was not allowed to choose were dishes, tobacco and hardware. She began with the coffee and creamer display then moved on to the meat section. There was no need for her to push a shopping car t as the Knights and o t h e r vo l u n t e e r s h e l p e d h e r w i t h that. As time ran out, Betz told them what she needed and the volunteers loaded her cart for her. Bingham, had a portable PA system that both informed her of the amount of time she had left and encouraged her not to stop and think or worr y about being neat. As the car ts were put through the till, a large group of employees, Knights, and other visitors were there to assist with the unloading, scanning, bagging, and reloading of the groceries. As expected, Betz came away with five carts of food and the Knights paid a bill of $1,0 03.95 to McDonald’s Family Foods. Harp Khela and Glynn McDonald met through a similar supplier. By chance, they both looked at purchasing the section of Lakeland Mall before it was turned into Harp’s Family Foods. It wasn’t the right time f o r M c D o n a l d , t h e n h o w eve r t w o year s later he phoned Har p about another business venture and the sale of Harp’s store came up in the conversation. Ready to buy at that t i m e, M c D o n a l d b e c a m e t h e n ew owner. McDonald owns another store in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan, where his wife and t wo children currently r e s i d e. H i s f a m i l y h a s o w n e d t h e s t o r e i n H u d s o n B a y s i n c e 19 5 8 w h e n i t wa s c a l l e d M c D o n a l d ’s C o r n e r G r o c e r y. T h e n a m e w a s c h a n g e d t o M c D o n a l d ’s Fa m i l y Foods in 20 01 when Glynn McDonald purchased the store from his f a t h e r. T h e r e s t o f h i s f a m i l y w i l l j o i n h i m i n Ve r m i l i o n o n c e t h e 2014/15 school year is complete. McDonald, a third generation grocery store owner, has been spending a lot of time at the store since his takeover to improve the decor, install signs, place antiques atop the coolers to add atmosphere, realign shelves, increase the product selection, and change the name of the store to McDonald’s Family Foods. McDonald hopes to complete most of major changes to the store by the end of February which will be followed by a grand opening sale.

During the week of December 15 the ATCO building in Vermilion was filled with good will and volunteers from Santa Anonymous who were in the spirit of Christmas as they spent their time collecting and sorting food, clothes and toys for 84 families in the hopes of helping them have their own delightful and happy Christmas. We l l h e r e i t i s , Christmas week has finally arrived and here at the office we are starting to feel pretty excited. I am pretty sure we will have Christmas music p laying an d as always, the of fi c e will be full of chatter and us running around like chickens with our heads popped off tr ying to get ever ything sewn up before we take Christmas day to spend with our families. Sue will more than likely be her u s u a l s e l f, b uz zi n g l i ke t h e b u sy bee she always is with the rest of us buzzing with her as she is the leader of our little team and we all seem to become just like her when she is in her “we have to get this done mode.” Sue, I have to say, is one extraordinary women. I have never seen or worked with a women who can, off the top of her head, pull an email address from thin air, remember the names and numbers of so many of her customers and in an unbelievable fashion, recall pretty much every advertisement which is scheduled to be in the paper for each issue with-

out even looking. I call her our “Rain Man.” because none of us here in the office could ever in a life time hold the vast amount of information in our brains the way Sue does. As for the rest of our team, Sally our graphic ar tist has to be the second most impor tant par t. Without Sally, our paper would not be the highly organized, well placed paper it is when it reaches your home or business. This past weekend Sally was feeling extremely under the weather and still attempted to come to work and build the ads and place the paper. We had to do our best to help get our Sally better because without her we are surely lost. We sent her home to rest, and let me tell you, my feeble at tem pt at p lac ing t he pa p er was just that feeble. Thank goodness, Sunday morning she came into work and fixed the mistakes. We would like to express a huge thank you to Sally for all her hard work and dedication. As for our other team member s Karen Nedzielski, Nicole Crossan, and the newest member of our family here at the Vermilion Voice, Mirna Lozic Mandic they all play an integral part in researching and reporting on

Student of the Month November Thomas Crossan is the Bargain Shop Student of the Month for November for the Vermilion Outreach School. Thomas is a Grade 10 student who has shown tremendous dedication and focus on his academic studies. He has maintained very consistent attendance and has shown maturity working through difficult problems in his Mathematics and Social Studies courses. Over his time at the school, Thomas is becoming involved in other activities, volunteering to help clean, visiting the Lodge, and helping with Random Acts of Kindness. Around The Campfire

I’m trying not to get too caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and as usual it came quickly and will pass just when I get into the spirit. The chores seem endless with weeks of preparation for one day that may have been commercialized beyond the true meaning, but I try to keep the true meaning in spirit. A lot of good will throughout the world is shared this time of year. Perhaps the biggest bonus of the true meaning of Christmas, on a personal level, it’s a close family time and as a turkey addict Christmas dinner has many rewards. I look forward to that. To prepare for just that, my wife Roxanne and I attended the many events of our local Annual Irma Santa Day this past weekend. Now my highlight, truth be known, was the Irma Christmas Turkey shoot, an outstanding event sponsored by the Irma Fish and Game Club and Irma Fire department with proceeds going to very worthwhile causes. Not to worry folks. No turkeys were harmed at the event. There were however 103 frozen turkeys given out to our local community, one also did actually have to shoot to win. For your donation of five dollars you got two turkey targets. The wife and I each took four targets which were set up by the knowledgeable range safety officers on hand at every shooting station. High tech pellet guns were provided for your turkey mayhem, as we were allowed five shots per target. Of course one had to first hit the paper target turkey to score your shot, but there was also some strategy involved as just hitting the turkey was only the first priority. The Irma Fish and Game Club had several templates with random numbers that outlined your turkey target. Those numbers would be added up for high scores and a win, so my strategy which in a sense was in the spirit of Christmas. One of my all-time favorite Christmas movies is “A Christmas Story” about a youngster that all he wanted for Christmas was a Red Ryder BB gun. But all everybody told him was that “yer gonna
shoot yer eye out!” He did get his BB gun, and his first shot bounced back and took out a lens of his eye glasses, a hilarious Christmas story that I can relate to in every way. So anyway in the spirit my first shot of each turkey target was of course in the paper turkeys eye…then I just went for a group…crazy you say…crazy like a fox! Yup I won a plump delectable bird; my mouth drooled as I walked out with my chest out and a turkey bird in hand, now my wife’s strategy was a little unclear to me. She hasn’t shot anything in some time, not that she doesn’t know how to. In fact, she is quite the marksman/woman when she does shoot; however, here it looked like her strategy was NOT to shoot the range officer’s eye out! And of course not to be out done, she also proudly walked out with our second delectable bird, then we had hot dogs and coco and enjoyed the company and day with friends. An outstanding job by the Irma Fish and Game, Irma fire department and all involved. It certainly made my day and I could actually smell that aroma of that golden bird basting in the oven. I wanted to get out ice fishing as the weekend was so nice out there, but the turkeys were well worth it and I had the Archery Display at my shop on Sunday, which went very well. The turnout was good for short notice and the professionalism from the folks at APA Archery was second to none in the display of their new 2015 bow line. We got to shoot new bows that were not even on the market yet and all the new innovations were demonstrated by the creators of the bows. I was very impressed as were most that attended. These events kept my past weekend very busy and as I have the next several weeks off for more adventures planned that will kept me as busy. As a result, my column may be missing for a week during the holiday Christmas season. When the Smoke Clears So I will take this time to wish you and yours a safe, enjoyable Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year…and remember “don’t shoot yer eye out!

Letter From Fred Holman, Part 4 Franklin Wolters Columnist
When he took his young pigs to Vermilion earlier in the fall to be shipped to Edmonton, he looked around the stockyards for an old sow, located the owner and offered him $5 for her. A good deal, better than paying freight on one animal to Edmonton and taking whatever they were paying. For six weeks he would fatten her to about 500 pounds before butchering. The boys, Otto and Herman came over to help as it is a big job. We used a strong, tall tripod of poles with a 45 gallon drum half full of water heated by a fire beneath. As soon as the pig was killed, the blood was collected in a bowl to be used later in sausages. Our neighbor, Hamilton from north England, saved the blood from the pigs. Then the animal was raised by the legs with a block and tackle hitched to the tripod and dipped (one end at a time) into the 45 gallon drum of hot water. Then it was laid on a clean stone-boat. A stone boat is a sled with two sturdy logs for runners and good solid planks for the platform. Mostly used for hauling stones off the field and cleaning out the barn. You added the horsepower as needed. Now you have the pig on the stone-boat, you have real sharp knives and scrape the bristles off. It is wintertime and cold, so no dilly dallying. There is a big surface to be scraped. When one half is done you repeat the process with the other half. Now the animal had to be dressed. The intestines and stomach emptied and given to mother who had a galvanized iron bath-
tub ready with water to wash them. I don’t know how many times she washed them, but by the time she put them on a rack to dry they were squeaky clean. All the other organs got individual treatment. Nothing was wasted, except the squeal and they would have used that if they could have caught it. The hens used the bristles for toothpicks. The carcass was sawn in half, then the halves were divided in two and the quarters hung for two or three days before cutting them up. Why this procedure was done I don’t know, but it was standard procedure and the meat was fine in cold weather. We spent every evening for a week making sausages. The men had wood to cut during the day. She was far from idle. The stomach had been filled and sewn up with ground up meat mixed with blood. I am not sure if it was cooked then or later. The blood contains a lot of protein and this sausage was a real treat, but not for me. As you might guess, my job was cranking the meat grinder. He kept it filled and she made sure the sausages were full and gave them a twist when they were long enough. The feet were put in the tub to be soaked for cleaning. When she was satisfied, they went with the head to make head cheese. The teeth were removed with a pair of pliers and put into the oven to dry until they were brittle. She had a square board, a small hammer, and a cloth. She would fold a couple of teeth in the cloth and break them up with the hammer. Then they went into the 100 pound flour sack that hung behind the stove for egg shells for the chickens, crushed of course. Incidentally, we took our own grain to the grist mill in Vermilion for our flour and the various parts. She did all the cleaning up and odds and
ends, but he said, “Ach! We’re getting old and slow. We used to do it in two or three days.” They were good, honest, hardworking people and we got along fine. They even taught me to speak two German mottos: “save in time and have in need” and “those who don’t come at the right time have to eat what’s left.” I had spent the summer of 1939 at Moon Lake, Drayton Valley area, and when war was declared I hurried home to join up.
My last and best paying job was with Fred Kottmeier. Spring work--putting the crop in. One month with the condition I would go if the army called. I had applied by mail. When I went to get the milk pails he said, “Put them down! That’s women’s work on this farm.” So his wife and daughter milked cows while we sat in the house. I finally joined the army December 18, 1940. Written by Fred Holman.

The Friendship Bench moved outside each day. When the weather is nice again, we will put the Friendship Bench outside in the playground. Several students acted out scenes as examples of how to use the bench. The grade 6 students are very excited to use it and hope all students at VES feel the same way. We had two dress-up days this week, as many staff and students dressed in red and/or green on Dec. 17 and pajamas on Dec. 19. It was great to see so much participation, which earned students points for their house leagues. Also on Dec. 17, we had our last 2014 assembly and the last assembly on a Wednesday. In the New Year, we will be switching assemblies to Tuesdays at 10:45. At this assembly, the Savchenko children sang two Ukrainian songs accompanied by their mother on piano, and then the Friends’ Committee led the assembly in the singing of four Christmas songs. Legion poster contest winners were announced: Ryder Zubiak (1st colour), Rachel Baughman (2nd colour),

The Grade 6 Vibe Advisory presented their Friendship Bench at the school assembly during Bullying Awareness Week. Students decorated the bench and prepared a skit for the whole school. They discussed that the Friendship Bench is a special place on our playground that kids can go when they don’t have anyone to play with or talk to. Anyone can sit on it if they are feeling lonely. The Vibe Advisory will keep an eye on the bench, and then help students who are sitting on it. If two kids do not have anyone to play with and they both sit on the bench, they can also play together. The Friendship Bench will stay inside in the winter, and will be
Bonnie Bauer Retires After 35 Years Nicole Crossan Reporter
It was a party “for anyone whose life she has touched over the years” to attend, Amber Bauer wrote in her invitation email. The potluck retirement party for Bonnie Bauer took place on December 20 at the Regional Centre. There was enough food to feed the approximately 300 people in attendance and more came later on to participate in the dance and listen to Amber Bauer and her band. Over her 35 teaching years, Bauer has been renowned as an inspirational teacher at VES for her vitality and resourcefulness.
She has also participated in the Cantata, and led the adults “Touch of Brass” hand bell choir that recently played on Parliament Hill. After her retirement, Bauer plans to take care of her grandchildren and do a bit of traveling. She and her husband will go on their first excursion to Hawaii, which will be a warm vacation from our cold Canadian winter. Many people were invited to speak to Bauer about her retirement. She was thanked for her dedication to all her students and told that all the students she taught felt loved by her. One five year old said, “I hope she doesn’t leave this school... She will probably be back next year.”

In the last week of school, each grade was busy with their own unique activities. Grade 1 spent time together playing holiday themed games in the gym, enjoying treats, watching the movie Frozen, decorating gingerbread cookies and enjoying a holiday lunch together on Friday. Grade 2 was busy learning about their family cultures, completing some art, research, games, dances and original writing that they will present to their families during the Grade 2 Annual Culture Fair on Jan. 16. 4A was bursting with Christmas spirit as they decorated the classroom, sang carols, stepped back into Christmas past and created many lovely decorations and
dolls out of things they had on hand - just like the early pioneers would have done, and then had a potluck lunch. The Grade 5 classes had a chance to switch teachers for a period of Christmas fun as Mrs. Joa lead the classes through a Christmas craft, Mr. Harvey hosted Christmas PE, and Mr. Beecroft took the classes through Christmas jeopardy. The grade 5s got creative on the last day with a Christmas shirt. Grade 6 made their annual sugar cube castles, enjoyed some outdoor activities, had an optional Secret Santa, played board games, and shared gym periods. Planning and executing a holiday season and Christmas day for family and friends to enjoy is an outstanding exercise in project management. It is made more difficult by the fact that it is done only once a year. The difficulty level increases exponentially if you also work a full time job, and have children in activities. It is not just Santa that is making a list and checking it twice. All of you ladies that make Christmas happen as a joyful celebration for your families deserve a metal.... and several trophies for all your work. For many ladies getting ready for Christmas means: several menus to plan, ingredients to list, foods to buy, and line ups to wait in. There are rooms to be cleaned and

bedrooms to be made up, for visiting family. There are angel wings and tinsel halos to make, bathrobes to be found for shepherds and wise men, church pageants and children’s concerts to attend. There are cookies and squares to bake. There are Christmas cards to address, Christmas parties to attend, and secret Santa gifts to buy. There is the Christmas tree to decorate, and some thought needs to be put into the table centerpiece. There are wreaths and garlands to be hung. A quick trip to pick up the wine and champagne is on the list, so it is on hand and ready when needed, which at this rate, may be sooner rather than later! There are gifts to be made, gifts to be bought and more line ups to wait in. The gift wrapping always seems to take longer than planned, but once the presents go under the tree, and the lights get plugged in, the tree truly sparkles with magic. The stocking go up, but last minute shopping still needs to be done for fresh lettuce and
salad fixings, coffee cream and just baked buns. All of the hustle and bustle can leave even a Tibetan monk feeling a bit stressed, so do what any good monk would do, breathe in to the count of five and breathe out to the count of five. There, now that’s better. There is another way to do Christmas. I remember one Christmas morning, when I was a kid, opening Christmas presents. My Dad leaned over to ask me, “What did I get you?”. It was at that moment that I realized that my Dads’ experience in getting ready for Christmas was entirely different than my Moms. On the Saturday before Christmas, he would drive my mom to town and wait in the car, with my two younger brothers, reading the paper, while she did all the required shopping. The one thing that I know he did was to select and purchases my mom’s gift... which he later got me to wrap.

My Dad was then done all his Christmas duties, until it was time to carve the turkey. When Christmas dinner was over my Dad would request my mom “to make up a few plates” which she did knowingly, while I was left wondering why. My Dad then told me to get my coat on, and again there was no answer when I inquired, where we were going. Together we walked to the end of the block in Kitscoty, with plates of turkey dinner and dessert. When we reached the tiny house, my Dad knocked on the door. It was answered by an elderly bachelor with a cane. My Dad offered the plates with a heartfelt” Merry Christmas.” The elderly man was repeatedly thankful. My Dad and I both smiled, full of joy inside. This was the other way I learned to do Christmas that day. I wish each and every one of you peace and wonderful memories in whatever way you choose to do Christmas. Merry Christmas.
Warm Fuzzies On Elf Day Margaret McCormack, St. Jerome School Submitted
Congratulations to the Elementary students for the spectacular Christmas Concert performance on Thursday evening. The acting was phenomenal, the singing was spectacular, and the dancing was dazzling. Well done, students and staff and thank you for sharing the true meaning of Christmas, the Birth of Christ. The Sr. High Student Council did an amazing job of the “5 Days of Christmas” last week. The High School was wonderfully decorated for Christmas. Everyone enjoyed a hot mug of Hot Chocolate as they spend the day in the PJ’s on Monday, and students wore awesome Christmas Hats and Ugly Christmas Sweaters over the next two days. On Thursday students showed kindness to others as we celebrated “Elf Day” and on Friday shared “Warm Fuzzies” and an “Ethnic Lunch” together. Congratulations to all our December Elementary Happigram winners for their hard work and tremendous efforts over the past month. Middle Level also celebrated Recognition Awards for December this week. Congratulations to all the winners for their dedication to their schoolwork and
kindness to others. Students and staff walked to church on Wednesday morning to celebrate our monthly mass. Father Roger reminded us that Christ fulfilled the prophets as he comes to be our Saviour and King. Thank you to the Grade 11 students and Grade 6 students for their participation as readers, gift bearers and choir at mass. The Grade 1 classes have enjoyed their Advent Calendars that were made by Mrs. McCormack’s Grade 5 class. There is always a surprise message waiting to be read and an activity to do each day when a new window is opened. One such message was “Go Caroling.” Because of that Advent message, Mrs. Belton, our former school secretary, was delighted to have her porch filled with six and seven year olds singing traditional Christmas songs. Congratulations St. Jerome’s for showing a tremendous effort for raising close to $900 for Habitat for Humanity over the past two weeks. Thank you to our students for the wonderful “Food Bank” and “Santa’s Anonymous” donations that have been given throughout the month of December.

While the fine details of the idea are still in the works, the purchase of the land between the Vermilion Heritage Museum and the Vermilion Senior’s Centre there are plans to build a brick bake oven and turn the parking lot into a community garden . These have been suggested and approved by The Town of Vermilion at their most recent Town Council meeting. After seeing what has been done in Toronto, Craig Brown and supporters from the Vermilion Senior’s Centre, Vermilion Museum, and other local organizations have come up with an idea for a public bake oven that Mayor Bruce MacDuff and town
councillors commended them for at their December 16 Town Council meeting. This idea was modeled after a park in Dufferin Grove, Toronto which was modeled after Germany’s concert garden that Henry Curtis called “the most delightful community playground in the world” for its music, refreshments, social atmosphere, and landscape. A similar idea was tried and found to be popular in Minnesota, USA. The oven could be open nearly every weekend since it is able to in work up to 20 degrees below zero and herbs and vegetables grown in the community garden could be used in the recipes baked in the brick wood burning oven. In addition, the Town has agreed to make a donation towards the purchase of some
property with kudos from council members for the people in the Town of Vermilion whose ideas make this Town special. Another item of interest discussed at this Town Council meeting included a way for people to make donations “to worthy projects managed by the Town,” the agenda item number 5.3 fact sheet stated; people can make donations to ongoing programs and be issued a tax deductible receipt for: Growing Green (formerly, Trees 2000), Canada Day Program, Splash Pad (Spray Park), The Vermilion Cemetery Memorial Fund and Dog Park. There were some new programs that were also suggested including the Snow Angels Program, Memorial Bench Program (assist with purchase and placement of

benches with memorial plaques in municipal parks), and Light Up Vermilion (to help purchase new holiday lights and displays). The Brennan Park Playground was another item that was discussed. Orphan Well Association has agreed to pay for the replacement of the play equipment that was removed from the leaking natural gas well site and Town Council selected one of the three options for playground equipment that will be installed. After previous long discussions about Town Hall Park, Town Council will ask their architect if there are any suggestions for enhancements to the park at this time as the pergola installation will not be carried through due to a lack of funds to have it engineered and certified.

Santa’s Anonymous Receives Huge Donation

Santa’s Anonymous which is organized by the Vermilion Lions Club has an increased need this year as the number of families they will be helping has risen from 73 last year to 84. Santa’s Anonymous covers Vermilion, Islay, Clandonald, Mannville, Innisfree and Minburn and received a very generous donation from Automated Tank Manufacturing from Kitscoty on
December 16. and suppor t from the communities A u t o m a t e d Ta n k M a n u f a c t u r - because without them this program ing employees Cindy Iser t, Brooke could never happen. Graham and Jef f Clarke arrived at the ATCO Gas building in Vermilion around 10 a.m. with three vans filled to the brim with toys, clothes and Sobeys gift cards which they collected from their main sponsor, Coatings 2000, as well as suppliers, clients and general donations. Dolores Coates-Lingley said she appreciates all the volunteers

Last week the Mannville school gymnasium was converted into Whoville as the elementary grades performed their adaptation of the play, “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas” as well as singing Christmas carols for family, friends and community members. The stage was filled with “Whos” of every shape and size with their faces painted and hair styles sticking straightup. Tuesday evening’s school per formance followed a community supper fundraiser.

The Magic Of Christmas Fills Innisfree Rec Centre

The Innisfree Rec Centre was filled nearly to the brim of its capacity on December 18 for the Innisfree Delnorte school’s annual supper and Christmas concert. The roast beef meal, prepared by parent-volunteers, school representative and teachers, had all the fixings to fill up even the hungriest of diners. Following the supper the audience was treated to an Innisfree Delnorte School Production as directed by the School’s Grade 9 students, titled “The Magic Of Christmas”. The play’s setting took place in modern times and featured the Narrator-SantaMailman, played by Kristin Bergman, who helped two young boys Donovan Carter, played by Hayden Isley, and Louis Rich-
mond, played by Logan Nott, learn the true meaning of Christmas. The magic of the season, and also the mysterious postman, saw the t wo boys switc h places with each other in life as the wealthy Louis, took the place of poor-boy Donovan, and both learn valuable lessons about the true meaning of Christmas. The event was visited by the jolly, old man himself, Santa Claus, before the night ended.

Trisha Mead, Jesse Axely, Erin Lychak, Trista Throndson, Julia McKimmon, Erin Ray, Brynn Bast, Kayla Farkash, and Katrina Pries are this year’s girls’ team and coached by Mr. Mike Schmidt who taught here last here. They also traveled to Bonnyville for league play last Wednesday with the senior boys—Dylan Carey, Morgan MacMillan, Thomas Nawrot, Greg Perillat, Ryley Schmahl, Cameron Webb, and Donovan Yaceyko. The boys’ team is led by Mr. Woodward. A heap of sweet hugs goes to Mothers Who Care for their yummy gift of home-
baked goods that they dropped off for J.R. staff the week before the holiday break. We appreciate your thoughtfulness, generosity and sugary goodness. At Christmas time, let the Spirit of Love gently fill your hearts and homes. On November 18, the Alberta 55 Plus Club held a Fun Day in Lloydminster at the Legacy Centre. Three teams of card players went from the Vermilion Senior Centre to participate in the fun by playing military whist. At the end of the day, all three teams received prizes. First prize was won by Lil Sweet, Gwen Kibblewhite, Eileen Goad, and Tillie Heinemann. Second prize was won by Doreen McIntyre, Jean Morrison, Sylvia Preteau and Gert Isert. Third prize was won by Marj Osinchuk, Elsie Quickstad, Vic Nowosad and Dora Feenstra. It was a good day! The month of December has proven to be a busy time preparing for the many events that are special to the Christmas season. As always hard work and cooperation by members make these events
successful and enjoyable to others. Birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated on December 2. Cake and ice cream were enjoyed by those in attendance. That day Christmas decorating began with the tree and stage in anticipation of other things to come, like the Seniors’ Potluck Supper and the Crib Doubles. The Seniors’ Potluck Supper was special this month, turkey complete with dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, mashed turnips, cabbage rolls, baked beans, as well as all the other tasty contributions. Around 80 attended this supper, the weather cooperated. A mini-Christmas concert was held and organized by Mamie Sainsborg. The crowd was delighted to watch a skit, “The Murmurs”, a traditional custom of the Newfoundlanders, but also by others. Many of us were unfamiliar with this custom, although we were aware of similar customs of going door- to-door singing Christmas carols, etc. The actors were
all our seniors. A ladies quartet comprising of Doreen Ford, Dixie Farkash, Judy Walsh, and Leslie Bruce were special guests. They sang a medley of Christmas Carols. There were two readings, one by Gert Isert with a seniors rendition of the Night Before Xmas and a poem by Jeanette Coutts. To end the evening, the crowd participated in singing “ I Wish You a Merry Christmas”. Everyone went home smiling. The next day, the Crib Doubles took place. Many had worked the day and evening before and were looking forward to a relaxing day, but a meal had to be prepared for the 11 tables of players in attendance. Thanks to Doreen McIntyre and Gert Isert who made this happen with some other helpers. Special thanks to those ladies that stay the distance and help with the clean-up in the kitchen. The Crib Doubles were won by the following: First - Wayne and Viola Baynham, Second – Tillie Heinemann and Marj Osinchuk, Third - Doreen

The next Crib Doubles will be held on January 8. That same evening the Seniors’ Choir held their annual Chrismas Concert with special quests “A Touch of Brass”. The director of the seniors choir is Irene Smith. Attendance was good with admission being a donation for the Food Bank or a Silver Collection. Lunch was served. On December 19, the floor curlers are holding their yearend get-together. Around 25 members are expected to attend at the Seniors’ Centre at dinner time. Thanks to Gert for all her organizing. Every Monday at around l p.m., there is a drop-in for bridge players at the Seniors’ Centre. Anyone interested in bridge can contact Dave Clennett at 853-7315.
Skating Club Seeks Alumni Nicole Crossan Reporter
The Vermilion Skating Club is celebrating their fiftieth season with Skate Canada at their carnival on March 7, 2015 at the Vermilion Stadium. To prepare for this event, their new coach, Becky Zajic is looking for alumni who may have photos, awards, pins, costumes, and newspaper articles that could be put on display during this histori-
cal event. The skating season runs from October to March, however, there is still time for people to register for the CanSkate program which takes places two evenings a week from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. at the Vermilion Stadium from January to March. The deadline for registrations is January 6. This is a program for anyone from hockey players, speed skaters, figure skaters and public skaters, to learn the
basics of how to skate. Those who are interested in registering for other classes with the Vermilion Skating Club can look for more information at the community registration day next fall. Zajic began to skate with the Vermilion Skating Club when she was four years old and graduated from this club when she was 18. Isaiah Jones And The Seeker Of Lost Treasure

Isaiah Jones, played by Clay Corbiere, is wrapped up in a video game and wants to complete the last level before he does anything else, including eating a cookie with his sister. Jones falls asleep while he is playing and wakes up inside the video game, only there are a few changes like new levels. He is guided to the cave of wisdom, but doesn’t know that he was traveling with the king of thieves in disguise until he steals the key and then the gift of Myrrh. Isaiah Jones, played by Clay Corbiere, fell asleep in the desert. Photos Nicole Crossan The evil King of Thieves does not prevail, however because he was misguided in thinking that finding the gift of Myrrh was the end of the game. He throws away the gift in disappointment and leaves the game. The Balthazar arrives on the scene looking for the North Star that would guide him to the true gift of Christmas, the birth of the Christ child. Jones gives him the gift of Myrrh to give to the baby when he arrives at his manger and discovers that the real winner in this video game is the person who is willing to give their gifts way rather than to keep them for themselves and the chorus sings this in their song “Give It Away.” Jones shows that he has been changed from the experience when he awakens from the dream and immediately desires to take his sister caroling to spread the good news of Christ’s birth. Holding the gun is Clay Corbiere. In the green hats are from left Cruz B, Jayben G, Landon R, Mikinley Y. On the ground are Doug D, Alexis R, Owen C, Gracie S, and Mia W. The cacti startled Jones, Clay Corbiere, as he tried to figure out who were friends and who were foes, yet still he was deceived by the tricky King of Thieves who pretended to be a friend to him right up until the end of the game.

County Donates To Raise The Roof Nicole Crossan Reporter
The Vermilion Heritage Museum is currently staffed strictly by volunteers and they have been busy as worker bees trying to raise money to fix the leaky roof. They have applied for a matching grant that, if accepted, will give them enough money to fix their roof. The difficulty lies in raising the other half of the money needed. The County of Vermilion River is one

The other Facebook users helped by sharing the link with their friends and making bids on the items being auctioned off. The items with the most bids were the College Park donation of a travel mug and gift certificate and the little wooden cupboard. The items bid on for the highest prices were the load of gravel from Ferbey’s and a queen size mattress set from Christina’s Home Furnishings. Jean Murie, museum president and
contractors get inside the roof to see if there is roof rot. The museum is currently seeking volunteers to work for four hours once every three weeks over the summer months when the museum is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday to Sunday. Volunteers will give guided tours and must be able to walk up and down the stairs. “It’s fun. You get to tell stories about the area, artifacts in the museum and of the special visitors who have made

comments during their visits to the Vermilion Heritage Museum,” Chesterman said. “The negative is that we have to replace a roof. The positive is that people are learning more about the museum and its impor tance to the community,” Chesterman explained. She also is thankful that everyone has “stepped up to the plate” to help save the museum from any fur ther damage caused by a leaky roof.

Courage Canada Donation

Cur tis Anderson, founder of the Courage Canada Trail Ride, donated $2,088.50 to Vermilion FOCUS.This money was raise at his annual trail ride to support brain injury awareness. Anderson was riding bulls at the Ponoka Stampede on June 26, 2002, when he acquired a brain injury. Anderson has been invited to speak at numerous events to explain to people what an acquired brain injury is and how it has impacted not only his own life, but also the lives of his friends and family members. Courage Canada raised a total of $22,045 in 2014 and has raised $122,045 since Anderson and his family began the trail ride fundraiser in 2004. The next trail ride will take place on May 30, 2015 and those who are interested in more information are invited to visit the Courage Canada website at www.caccanda.com. Shelly Chomlack of FOCUS explained that Anderson’s donation will go towards improving the sensory room which is open to all community members and individuals. Chomlack stated they always find something really cool to put the donation from Courage Canada into that will benefit individuals at FOCUS.

This week we introduce Harry. What countr y are you from? I am from the North East of China- the city of Harbin, a cit y of about 5 million people. What languages can you speak? I speak Mandarin and English. We s t u d i e d En g l i s h i n s c h o o l. I t wa s im p or t ant to lear n be c ause in the higher grades all the textbooks were in English. I have learned English so much better since coming to Canada. I think people should not be lazy but should work hard to learn the language of their country. Better language is so important for getting ahead. Why did you come to Vermilion? I c a m e to a j o b i n S a s k at c h ewa n but after I got my Permanent Residence status, I got a job in a welding
company. Now I am working at LMG and I just star ted my second year apprenticeship at Lakeland College. What is the best part of moving to Canada? I never drove a car in China but in Canada I got my driver’s license and bought my first car. There are not too many vehicles on the road compared to China. I think I would like to own a Lexus someday. What games have you learned in Canada? I work night shift and am very busy studying, so there is little time but I like to swim at the college pool with some of my friends. Even though I am busy, living in Vermilion is much more relaxing than living in China. What was your favorite activity in your country? The stores and restaurants are open 24 hours in my city, and there would be people on the streets at
all times of the day and night. I would shop each day. How could the people in Vermilion help you live in Vermilion better? I have such good neighbours, they are always ready to help me. The co — workers and supervisors at my work place are excellent. What has surprised you the most about Vermilion? It is so quiet and so clean compared to the city in China and also c ompared to the town in Saskatchewan where I first worked. What is something most people do not know about China? We have lots of tasty food to offer What do you miss most from your countr y? My parents and friends. Every year I go back to china to see my parents who are 81 and 84 years old. In the December 17 game between Onion Lake Border Chiefs and the Vermilion Junior B Tigers, the first goal was by the Border Chiefs. Just over a minute later, Tigers’ Dalyn Borysiuk followed up with a goal. Less than a minute later the Border Chiefs scored again and with only 56 seconds left in the period, Craig Wilkinson scored for the Tigers leaving the score at the end of the first period tied, 2 to 2.
There was no score for the Border Chiefs in the second period and the Tigers scored one goal about six minutes into the period. The score was 3 to 2 for the Tigers at the end of the second period. The third period saw two more goals by the Border Chiefs and three consecutive goals by Spencer Ross, then Lucas Dennill, and the third by Evan Bardoel for the Tigers, leaving the Tigers a 6 to 5 win. had no score in the first period followed by a second period that ended with a tie of 1 to 1. The Tigers won by scoring two more goals in the third period, with no more goals by the Warriors. The final score was 3 to 1 for the Tigers. After a two game winning streak, the Tigers played another game against the St. Paul Canadiens. Halfway through the first period, there was no score, but with 4:25 left the Tigers’ Trent Dutchak scored the first goal of the game. It looked like the Tigers would be ahead by the end of the first period until with only 21 seconds left the Canadiens scored the second goal of the game. The first period ended with a tie of one all. The second period was much the same with one goal being scored by each team and finishing the period with a tie. The score was now 2 to 2. In the third period, the Canadiens scored two more goals leaving the game with a win of 4 to 2.
