Fatality collision claims Minburn Woman’s life In the early afternoon of December 4, Vermilion RCMP officers attended a two-vehicle fatal collision on Highway 16 at the intersection of Range Road 102 near Minburn, Alberta. A minivan proceeding southbound on the Range Road 102 had entered the intersection and was struck by full-sized van travelling westbound on Highway 16.

As he introduced the song the crowd roared with laughter. It was about a girl who drives a bulldozer on an Athabasca pipeline and has to help those oil companies meet their quota of 30,000 barrels a day. She wears steal toed boots and a hard hat and is covered in crud and mud, but this “pipeline baby” has a “hold on his heart.” It appeared that Hus just couldn’t resist his strong desire to include a little bit of Canadian history, even in his love song.

RCMP Reports The passenger of the minivan, a 65-yearold woman from Minburn, Alberta, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her husband and driver of the minivan were transported to an Edmonton hospital with serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the westbound van suffered minor injuries and have now been released from hospital. Highway 16 Westbound was closed for several hours while a Collision reconstructionist conducted his investigation. The cause of the collision is still under investigation. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

residential Break And Enter In Mannville On December 6, 2014 at approximately 4 p.m. the Vermilion RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter in progress in the village of Mannville. The resident of the home remained undetected by the intruder and alerted a family member via text that an unknown male had broken into the house, and to call the police. As the intruder was attempting to steal a TV, the resident yelled out which scared him off. The suspect in this break and enter may have been carrying a rifle. The suspect is described as a Cauca-

sian male wearing a balaclava to conceal his face. Vermilion RCMP are looking for the Public’s assistance in solving this break and enter and are asking anyone who may have information regarding this occurrence to contact the Vermilion RCMP at 780-8534441. Gordon Hills of the Anglican Church asked the audience to ponder this photo, then spoke about the beauty inherent in the Aurora in which the most common colour is green. Allowing

Then Moses, from the Walking Through Grief Society, continued to explain that when we lose someone we love we can’t help but be changed by the experience. Before we know it, we are not the same as we were before.

Jesus is our rock,” were words that were spoken throughout the service to comfort those in attendance as they remembered those they have loved and lost. come and recover from feelings of grief and loss thanks to a Saviour who understands exactly what we have and are going through. The service finished where it began, with the sound of violins sifting out a soft, reverent melody.

Oh the Christmas season, a time of going out and visiting friends and family. Invites to heaven only knows how many Christmas parties and outings to social gathering places. Christmas is a time when we can indulge in the many forms of baked Christmas goods, cakes, cookies, chip dips and of course the Christmas dinner. Christmas is suppose to be a happy and

joyous occasion, but all too often a night out on the town ends in disaster, accidents or even worse a DUI charge. I have taken notice that in some establishments the owners have taken it upon themselves to have breathalyser machines which have been supplied by STARS. When I saw one in a local business here in town I thought to myself and spoke to my co worker about how absolutely brilliant it was by the owner to give their patrons the opportunity to act responsibly, by supplying a breathalyser in their establishment. The owners in my thought are acting with due diligence in their role of preventing driv-

I was a little shocked by the results, I actually blew a warning and to me I felt perfectly fine, if I had drank one more I probably would have failed. I then went and ordered a alcoholic beverage, sat down and drank it, then waited a while, popped in another toonie and repeated the same steps. When the results popped up

Letters To The Editor I wish to pen this letter to all the fine people of Vermilion who came out to the Vic Juba on Nov 19, 20 or 21 to watch and support me in the play “Don’t Dress for Dinner”. I played the part of Robert (the best friend of my mistress’ husband). I was genuinely touched by all the support and encouragement I received by the fine people here in the town and it is a testament to those who drove the 40 plus minutes to come out and see me and my fellow cast mates. From what I’ve heard the play was a tremendous success and it was enjoyed by all.

I wish to thank in particular the 115 seniors Dave Woods that came out for the matinee on Thurs- the arts, Community Theater and a fellow AKA: Robert day; you folks were an absolutely FANTAS- Vermilionite. TIC crowd! I couldn’t tell you how the cast enjoyed your feedback. I’d also like to thank the group from the Provincial courthouse who came out to see a friend and former colleague, those that I currently work with, friends, family and neighbours who came out and had a great night. I do this for the love of the theater and the entertainment of the audience. Those that I work with at the nursing home already get free shows of my craziness, I’m just thankful AFTER 39 YEARS OF SERVICE I got to share it all with you.

They had the chance for an hour on the ice playing a little four on four with Randy Ferbey and Jennifer Jones on December 8. Randy Ferbey has won six Brier Championships and four World Championships. Ho. Ho. Ho. How did December get here so fast? I am nowhere ready for all the fat guy in the red suit stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the holiday season-the family time, acts of giving and the real meaning, but I simply can’t stand all the hustle and bustle of the commercial side of Christmas! Maybe the next 25 days will come and go as fast as November came and went, but I know better. I am trying not to be a humbug, as I am all for the good will and spirit of Christmas, as a lot of good stuff happens and this time of year that brings the best out in people. It’s not that I am mourning the end of the 2014 hunting season and its adventures. It was plenty long enough and time really didn’t flash by quickly. I thoroughly enjoy this hunting season and am grateful for all the adventures. In fact, I have a lot of things to do now, many of which I neglected because it was hunting season. I am really looking forward to ice fishing this year. That is on top of the list just under all the “Honey-do’s.” Although firewood is always on top of the “Honey-do” list, I don’t mind. It’s good exercise and I get to play outdoors, and with the frigid temperatures of late, I enjoy the fireplace. Predator control is on the list also. Coyotes are moving in way too close to home and in numbers; in fact one of our outdoor kitties’ had a real late in the year but small litter of fluff balls. There were only four, which my wife quickly introduced to the glowing warm fireplace and they quickly grew very fond of that. We also spent a lot of time with them feeding them as a needed supplement. We grew close to them quickly and had names for them all. There was one a pinkish cream colour, so we called her “Pink” and three reddish orange and white ones really stood out in the bunch.

He was the first to “dew” [do] everything and anything so I called him “Dew.” He was also the first one to scale the high couch so when he climbed up I said “Hey look at Mountain Dew’…ha. ha. The smallest was named “Button” and the middle last is “Boo” as it peeked a lot… peek a Boo! We grew quite fond of this bunch of hooligans and they spent a lot of time indoors during the cold snap. Point is, we have several insulated dog houses full of straw that the outdoor kitty’s use and since the kittens mother was outdoors we would have to let them out for mothers milk and care. “Pink,” the cuddly one, went missing nowhere to be seen and coyote tracks in the yard, and we also lost Button…so we keep a vigil on Dew and Boo and an eye out for the coyotes. With hunting season being over, bowhunters will want to get back to shooting indoors with our winter leagues so I got to return the shop to normal instead of a disorderly hunting season mess.

I will keep a weekly tab on harvest counts and update as I predict low numbers other than the moose harvest. After three months of being in the hunt mode, it takes some adjustments to withdraw back to normal day to day routine and adventures, but new outdoor adventures help the adjustment stay tuned and get out there!

Hunting season isn’t over for everyone, there were some bonus opportunities for those lucky enough with the hunting draws. One of those hunts is the annual Camp Wainwright hunt that runs until mid-December. As expected with the cold, deep snow and deer numbers down, the hunt would also be slow after the first three day primitive weapon, and first three day rifle hunt. With first day of the third three day hunt under way deer totals are 93 deer harvested, with half of that count going to the primitive weapon hunt, mostly Mule deer harvested and Whitetail harvest down considerably. There were only four elk harvested thus far, but sightings are way up by other hunters. The turn out of the successful elk draw hunters are down, most likely due to weather conditions. The big count is the moose. With already

The kitchen is the only room I remember well. The wood burning kitchen range (they more likely couldn’t spend scarce money on coal) had a warming oven at the top of the back wall and a hot-water reservoir at the end to catch the heat before it all escaped up the stove pipe. It rarely got beyond warm so you had to fill a big oval copper boiler for boiling water more than a kettle full. At the other end was the firebox with a shelf on the outside which she kept spills for him to light his pipe. He had a chair at this end to have a pipe full after breakfast. She lit the fire with one match so there was no need to use more, but he preferred matches to spills and face the storm. Unless the weather was bad and he wanted to delay going out. Later in the winter, when we were cutting wood in the ravine, after breakfast he had a pipe full then started to refill it. “You’re not having another pipe full, are you?” she asked. “Mama it’s storming outside,” he replied. Her quick response, “It’s not storming in the ravine. Can’t have two men sitting

around the kitchen all morning!” A token tamping of the pipe, but he knew he was beat. Out of the wind it was quite nice. We cut the trees on the hill, then staked them down for loading. Speaking of breakfast, after porridge and eggs, potatoes, she put a slab of bread on my plate. I was skinny and she said, “Eat up boy! Eat up! You can’t work if you don’t eat!” Laundry: I never saw the washing machine but the most common one had a lever that pushed back and forth and made the tub swish the clothes back and forth thus washing them. A wringer was fixed on the side of the tub for washing before hanging on the line with split-type pegs. A long pole with a y-branch at the top raised the clothes up out of the way. The cream-separator was bolted to the floor in one corner. The milk was strained through a white linen cloth. I got the job of turning the handle when the bell on the handle stopped ringing you were up to speed. Just keep it going. Cream for making butter was kept in a stone crock in a cool place. When enough you churned it. A long round stick of wood, about the size of a broom handle, has a cross shaped paddle on the bottom end, a round wooden lid with hole in the centre that fits the crock, goes over the handle. Her answer, I know Gladys was listening.” But the news was repeated--I think to make sure she got it right.

There were no separate telephone lines. Instead, the wires were hooked up to the two strands of barbed wire fence. When they came to a gate, two tall poles, were put up to run the line across. One of the fences ran by the pasture. One of the cows got out so often by the crawlings between the wires they put a poke on her. Two poles fitted on her neck. when the old man was on the phone and there was static he would say, “That durned old cow is trying to get out again.” She must have been a good milker and produced good healthy calves or she would have gone to the glue factory. The man’s question is rhetorical, but it stays with me as I leave the little shop. Is there a kind of sadness in his voice or am I inserting that sentiment with my interpretation of his words? He asks the clerk, ‘what can you buy with twenty-five dollars for a young guy who has everything...who earns forty bucks an hour? What?’ In between the sounds of Christmas jingles wafting out into the streets and the shuffling footsteps of shoppers searching for gifts that will bring pleasure to their loved ones on Christmas day, there exists another sound. It’s the hum of those quietly occupying the sparsely furnished spaces of just barely making it. Even surrounded with the scenes and sounds of the holiday season, probably good cheer and shopping isn’t foremost on their minds. Any time of year is difficult for people on fixed incomes but Christmas, oh

Gifts Christmas, arrives and brings with it a myriad of complicated challenges. You live in poverty but feel compelled to gift a little something to your offspring, even if he earns forty bucks an hour and wants for no material goods. Or, you live in poverty and you are alone, drifting like a ghost through the season, waiting for its sparkle to dissipate so that you might breathe again. The Lloydminster Men’s Shelter can accommodate twenty-eight men each night. Executive Director, Laura Berube, confirms the facility is well-utilized. Even if you’re employed, it can be a challenge to find affordable accommodation in our area. An average single room rents for around $700.00 per month. One man reported viewing what he described as a ‘closet with a bed inside’ renting for $1100.00. The Shelter is an option for men in need of temporary sleeping accommodation. For some, it’s a place to stay while they continue the search for permanent housing. They might have found employment, but lack sufficient funds to secure a rental. The Shelter provides some

reprieve, allowing for a maximum stay of twenty-one days. Berube says that the Shelter draws from a wide range of demographics. There are younger men, either newly employed or underemployed, and there are older men. Currently, five residents are over the age of 65. One is 80 years old. These are not working people who require a temporary hand up while they accumulate enough money from employment to move on; they are men whose incomes are insufficient to support them. While the Shelter provides a safe, warm place to sleep and some meals, it has neither the space nor the means to operate a day activity centre. Residents must therefore vacate the premises between the hours of 8:00 am and 5:00 pm. For the employed, there’s a clear destination, but for others, it means finding ways to pass nine hours every day. To fully comprehend that reality, consider rising at about 7:00 am, readying yourself for the day, getting as much breakfast as is available, and then venturing out into the street at 8:00 o’clock in the morning. It’s December. What are you wearing?

How adept are you at walking? What’s open at this hour? Who will welcome you? What will you do when you get there? How long can you stay? Will anyone speak with you today? How do you feel? What time is it now? Why do the hours pass so slowly? How did you get here? How will you get back? What will become of you? Will tomorrow be better? Fortunately, there are good and charitable people in our midst. They work endlessly to ensure the continued existence of soup kitchens, day activities, transportation, warm clothing, hot meals in church facilities, outreach support and assistance to those who need it. And there are always those in need. If you have the means to do so, donate some of your time, some warm clothing, or some food to one of the facilities in your area. They will accept it graciously at any time. And if you do not have the means to give, then take the opportunity to acknowledge some of the people who dedicate themselves to ensuring the day to day survival of the ones who depend upon them. They are the selfless angels walking among us.

It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. The Christmas tree is up, decorations are everywhere and every morning the school is filled with music as our Elementary classes join together to sing Christmas songs in the multi-purpose room. The Santa Anonymous boxes have arrived at our school. Please help us make Christmas a little more special for families who could use a little help at this time of the year. We would love to see our boxes overflowing with toys and food donations. The boxes will still be here when we have our Christmas Concert if any community members would like to help fill the boxes. On that note...Please join us for a ‘Whoville Christmas’ put on by our Elementary classes on Tuesday, December 16 at 7 p.m. The Christmas concert is that exciting time of year and the students are anxiously awaiting Show Time.

Quiche is another classic dish that has been around for centuries. Food historians have traced its original origins back to an area around the Germany and France border. The German version would have originally been a simple smoked pork and egg pie, backed in a bread crust pie shell. I have not yet made quiche in a bread dough pie shell, but it sounds like it would taste delicious. The French versions of quiche use a pastry crust. Historically, a quiche made of eggs and onions is called quiche

Alsacienne. If the quiche is made of spinach and feta cheese then it is a Florentine quiche. Quiche Lorraine originates from the Lorraine region of France and contains smoked bacon. The more modern versions of Quiche Lorraine have Gruyere cheese as well as the bacon. I would say that this version is a Canadian style. Aged cheddar cheese can be used instead of the Swiss cheese. Quiche can be served as a breakfast, a brunch dish, a luncheon or even and supper meal. Complimentary side dishes suggestoins are a fruit salad, green salad, sliced tomatoes, pickles and fresh breads. Quiche makes a great Christmas morning breakfast, as it can be made ahead of time. In fact it was our Christmas morning

breakfast last year. It was so handy to pull it out of the fridge Christmas morning, and tada... breakfast is ready. Quiche goes well served with coffee, tea, orange juice, white wine or champagne.

Place the pie shell into an 8” round pan. This gives higher and straighter sides for the quiche. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Fry the bacon until crisp, and then remove from the pan and sauté the chopped onion and mushroom the bacon drippings Quiche until both begin to brown. 3 slices of bacon Remove from heat to cool slightly. 1/2 cup chopped onion In a mixing bowl, whisk together the 1 cup sliced mushrooms eggs, cream, salt pepper, dill, parme5 eggs san and Swiss cheese. Chop the bacon 1/2 cup cream 18% slices into small pieces. Stir in the bacon 1 tablespoon parmesan cheese pieces, cooked onion and mushroom. 3/4 teaspoon sea salt Pour this mixture into the pastry lined 1/4 teaspoon pepper 8” round pan and bake for 38 minutes at 1/2 cup grated Swiss cheese 350 degrees, or until a toothpick inserted 1/2 cup chopped spinach into the center comes out clean. 1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Serve 1 pie shell 9” or make your own pastry hot or cold.

They’re like the pyramids that the Egyptians built to honor the pharaohs. Only instead of being made of stone, they’re made out of the memories people have of you.”-R.J. Palacio, “Wonder.” School life is the culmination of hard work and lots of memories where people are building relationships, developing skills and attaining knowledge. It is these relationships and skills that determine a person’s character. Over the last week, a shower of recognition cascaded from central office, flowed from the community and sprinkled down into the environment of Dewberry School. A shower of citizenship awards were given to students for perseverance, dedication, leadership, volunteerism and sportsmanship. Students were recognized for their good deeds from as little as helping a fellow schoolmate zip up their jacket to assisting classmates with technological issues on their Chromebooks and stepping up to the plate to help out the staff during Remembrance Day ceremonies. Seeing the students do such random acts of kindness is a heartwarming sight! We know that they will become wonderful adults with such attributes. It also makes the environment at the school something worth walking through!

Early in the fall, the students moved through the community, meeting friends and family to sell magazines and fruit. The profits from these sales will go towards activities for the school, such as supporting the elementary swimming program, purchasing new gym equipment, and assisting with field trips. Most of the student body took part in the process but a big shout out went to thirteen students that sold at least twelve items in the fruit drive and received a free movie pass: Nicole Dennill, Bronson Romanchuk, Paige Gregg, Mason Oneschuk, Remington Oneschuk, Trenton Fluney, Zachary McDonald, Duncan Brown, Presley Parr, Laramie Parr, Jelena Parr and Kyle Kjenner. Torin Johre sold an amazing $1200 with 43 magazine subscriptions. Way to go! Our school was given a huge “thumbs up” from the Buffalo Trails Public School central office for approval on some renovations. $50,000 has been allotted towards the restructuring of a current classroom/workspace to make a CTS/ food studies/sublimation lab. Over the next month a staff committee will be set up to decide on the new floor plan for the lab. We are very excited to see this vision take flight. Renovations will begin over the summer of 2015! A distinguished community member visited our school on Wednesday, December 3 bearing gifts. Former Mayor, Headley Dennill, donated team jerseys for the junior boys’ volleyball team. Headley is very proud of our school and wanted to make sure the students could display this pride while they were participating in games and tournaments. He feels that if they can experience this pride it will undoubtedly improve their performance. Thank you so much, Headley, you are a

true pyramid towering in our world. We are honored daily by the presence of heroes in our school, they set a wonderful example to others. The monuments are being erected through these random acts of kindness and continued

support. We should all try to embrace the wise words of Richelle E. Goodrich, “Every sunrise is an invitation for us to arise and brighten someone’s day.” There is no better day than today.

Fun, Free Activities For The Family This Holiday Season Jodi Simmonds, VIBE Coach Submitted

December can be a very special month filled with holiday traditions, visiting with friends and family, and wonderful food and holiday treats. The holidays can also be a time of financial stress for many people. Is there a way to balance fun, family, and activities while at the same time relieving the financial strain of the holiday season? Fortunately we live in a community where there are still lots of things to do as a family that doesn’t cost a thing. Free public skating is available at the arena on Fridays from 4 to 5:45 p.m. and Sundays from 3:30 to 5 p.m. A special Santa Skate will be held on December 7 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the stadium. The Vermilion Public Library continues to offer programming for families with preschoolers. Check out Kids Connection Wednesdays from 10:30 to 12 p.m. or Rhymes That Bind on Thursdays from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday, December 14, Chris Olsen and the Vermilion River Naturalists will be hosting the Christmas Bird Count. Volunteer as a family to count

Get creative and plan a Christmas trivia game and challenge your family to see how much they know about Christmas books, movies and music. I have replaced windows like the ones you have described. I wish I had understood the difficulty of the job before I started. Here is my advice to save you time and money. As you describe the wall components I know how fragile they are and how difficult it is to change. The best approach is to stay away from the stucco and lathe and plaster all together. I recommend installing inserts into the existing frames. An insert is a sealed unit with a vinyl frame but no exterior brick mold or nailing flange. You simply remove the existing window and tracks that the old windows slid in. Next install the insert into this opening and seal it in place with caulking and quarter round or similar trims as directed by the window manufacturer. During her “ Stumbling Blocks in the Workplace” talk at the Partnership Dinner on December 4, Barbara May had one audience member doing cartwheels while she coached him. May did this to explain that when we are coaching our goal should be to get staff to the point where they know they didn’t do something correctly, then they will be able to start doing their jobs better. If employers put all sorts of pressure

on their employees to keep going before they are ready, they may give up, quit, or crash. A better approach, May explained, is for employers to give employees little tidbits of advice to chew on in bite size pieces, that way they can start by changing the little things rather than

feeling overwhelmed by not knowing where to start. It is common for workplaces not to train their employees in the skills that they need, May stated, then proved her point by asking how many people who are called on to do public speaking at work were trained to do so in their work-

place. All in attendance enjoyed a lovely turkey dinner with all the fixings prior to Barbara May’s presentation. The meeting ended with an announcement that the next Partnership Breakfast will take place on March 5 and a survey conducted by Jean Vidal.

Christmas Farmer’s Market

Solar lights And More christmas Decor The first Christmas Farmer’s Market of the Christmas season took place on December 2 at Elk’s Hall and there will be several more each Tuesday until Christmas from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ken West had a table with lighted glass boxes, lighted wine bottles and solar lights tied to upright decorative logs with cute figurines attached to them like the Seven Dwarves, Frogs, etc.

Message From Santa A Warm Hello From Santa claus I visited Vermilion last Thursday night and spent some time with the friendly folks at the Senior Center after the Night Light parade. We enjoyed some hot chocolate and cookies and saw all the Christmas trees. During my visit to the Vermilion Seniorâ€™s Centre I spoke with some young people and they all told me what they wanted for Christmas. One young girl only asked for a shovel so she could help her parents shovel snow on the sidewalks. Now I know Vermilion has had lots of snow already so I delivered an early Christ-

mas Present to the Vermilion Voice office for that young person. I just wanted that little girl to know Santa brought the present early so that she could use it now before Christmas and keep the walks clear for Christmas Eve. That little girl can stop in to the Voice office and let Sue know that it was her that asked Santa for the shovel. Thank you for the good evening in Vermilion and now I must get back to work as it is a busy season up here. Merry Christmas to all. Love from Santa

The Festival of Trees commit tee members Jessica Meroniuk, Brenda Bintz, and Charlene Carey would like to extend their gratitude to the Vermilion Senior’s Centre for providing a place to host the Festival of Trees, LMG for building the rope stands, and the businesses in the community for supporting this event. “Without trees to display, it wouldn’t be much of a Festival,” Carey said. The tree auction raised a total of $2,350 and $1,625 of this was raised for Santa’s Anonymous. The tree registrations raised $620, and the door donations raised $785.77. Super Volunteer Duo! Behind the scenes of all great performances are the workers in the trenches. Bravo to Jo-Ann Mones and Val Smith for faithfully helping out Allied Arts for the past three to four years. These two volunteers, both Lakeland College staff, go the extra mile for each performance. Val meets the performers at the theatre around noon, and if they are booked into Alumni House for the night, she gets them settled in their rooms and provides a light meal or snack if it’s requested. She makes sure that the Green Room, backstage where the artists go before, during, and after the performance, is set up with snacks, coffee, tea, and cold drinks to the artists’ specifications. We often hear the artists singing Val’s praises because of the wonderful TLC. Jo-Ann took over “front of the house” from Janice Jones when Janice retired from Lakeland College. Jo-Ann liaises with College Security to ensure the appropriate doors are open and then locked up at the end of the evening. She trains/orientates new ushers, fills in as an usher, helps set up or take down displays, assists in the stage tear-down, ensures the theatre and front end of the College are left clean, and trouble shoots any facility issues should they arise. The last one out the door, Jo-Ann ensures all is in good order and locked up. The rest of us arrive at the theatre, enjoy the show, and trundle home. We offer a number of programs in partnership with schools, agencies, churches and businesses in our area. The Fresh Food Box is available to anyone who wishes to purchase a

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at St. Jerome’s. The Elementary Students enjoyed decorating Christmas Trees in the front foyer with Mrs. Moir and Mrs. Lawrence. There is a forest of 30 beautifully decorated trees welcoming students and visitors to St. Jerome’s. Thank you to Mrs. and Mr. Moir and Mrs. Lawrence for organizing this event. They played their first game of the season on Thursday, December 4, when they hosted Marshall. The girls defeated Marshall 51-38 showing great determination and team play. The Jr. Boys are holding their Home Tournament this weekend on Friday and Saturday. Come out and cheer them on. The kindergarten classes visited the Fire Department for their recent Field Trip and had a SUPER TRIP. The students were able to try on the firefighters clothes. They met Sparky the Dog and got their picture taken with him. The highlight was to ride in the Fire trucks and Rescue Unit to the arena where

they tried out the lights and horns! Thank you to the Fire Department for the excellent field trip. Habitat Houses were given to the students this week to collect their coins in over the next two weeks. Student Council asks that all House Banks be brought in by Friday, December 12. On November 28, the buses did not run because of the weather, so our school population was about two-thirds the usual size. On that day, many staff and students donned their favorite team’s jersey/shirt for Jersey Day. It was also Sports Day at VES. For about an hour in the afternoon, we split into four groups and played a variety of sports inside that included floor curling, Zumba, bench ball and relays. VES drama students were set to perform on November 28 and 29, but due to unforeseen weather conditions, the plays were postponed until January. Caterer Pam Young had some fruit and squares made for the play that would not keep, so each student in our school received a little extra dessert. Thanks Pam. Each month, we study a different virtue at VES and this month, in conjunction with our year-round virtue of respect, we are looking at responsibility. Being responsible means that others depend on you; you are accountable for your actions; you make amends instead of excuses; you do your

“This is the largest vintage snowmobile show in Western Canada,” Chris Swan stated, and there was a good turnout at the third annual Snowmobile Expo in Vermilion on December 6. “We were at 100 people within the first hour,” Warren Young, President of Vermilion Ridge Riders stated to give some idea of what kind of numbers they had seen pass through that day. There were a total of about 90 sleds to view and approximately 65 of these were vintage.

In addition to a central show, there were merchants from Klim, Decals and Sign Obsessions, Ski Doo, Arctic Cat, Yamaha, and Polaris and there were representatives from various clubs for visitors to speak with. The small entry fee of $5/adult was well worth it considering that it included such freebies as a colourful selection of candy canes and popcorn and free admission for children. Many children were amazed to see the changes in how sleds were made through the years. Snowmobiles ranged in age from the oldest being from 1959 to the more modern sleds. “Come out next year!” Young encouraged. Basketball Begins At St. Jerome’s Congratulations to the St. Jerome’s Sr. Girls Basketball Team as they won gold in their home tournament this weekend. The girls started the tournament off with a win in front of the school by beating Viking 62 to 32. The girls started Saturday morning off with a win as they beat a familiar foe, Paradise Valley Trojans. The score was 67 to 54. The final was a nail bitter as the score went back and forth. The Spartans were trailing by a point as they entered the fourth quarter. The Spartans dug deep and beat the Ryley Rebels 55 to 52 to capture the gold. It was a great start to the season for the Lady Spartans. Their next action is on December 10 as they head to Lloyd Comp to take on the Barons. Good luck girls! Marauder Football Recognizes Spirit And Players Of The Year Cathy Wolters Reporter

He didn’t know what football was until he came to Canada and hasn’t yet played a game, but Ismael “Gord” Uddin does embody what it is to be a Marauder and was recognized with the 2014 Phil McKerihan Spirit of Marauder award. Uddin’s interest in Marauder football started when he began watching the practices while he was still in elementary school. The field is across the street from his home. The next year, when he was in Grade 7 at J.R. Robson, he again began going to every practice.

“Mr. Maier asked me if I wanted help,” says Uddin, now 13, who agreed to get involved and picked up the nickname Gord along with football knowledge. He became a fixture on the bench, even on road trips, with the primary role of water boy. His dedication to showing up—he hasn’t missed a practice or game in two years— exemplifies true Marauder spirit. He also has been anxiously waiting to be old enough to don the pads and play, something he can do next year when he’s in Grade 9. Uddin, who is currently in Grade 8 piano, is nothing if not willing to explore the sports beyond the soccer that he knew in Korea. This season he’s a hockey rookie, playing at the bantam level with teammates who have been playing for eight years or more. Hockey and football, he says, are “pretty much the best thing about Canada.” As for

next year, he hasn’t yet decided if he’d like to be on the offensive or defensive side of the ball. “Maybe both ways,” he says, and smiles. Another football rookie was a multiple winner at the annual awards night. Safety Carter Usenik, noted for his big hits on the field and touchdown saving tackles, was defensive player of the year, Rookie of the Year and defensive back of the year. Donovan Yacekyo also made three trips to the awards circle claiming the 2014 Tom Fenton most valuable player nod, top special teams player and runner up as defensive player of the year. Head coach Lorne Maier described him as “being the Marauder special teams” as Yacekyo was the team’s kicker as well as kick returner. A stalwart on defense, he also was a offensive weapon. Chilibeck, the Marauder’s leading rusher, was runner up to Yaceyko as team MVP, winner of the top offensive player and runner up as offensive back and special teams player of the year. Scott Zielinksi repeated as the top defensive lineman for the Marauders and was runner up as top offensive lineman. William Snider, who was runner up as most improved player, was the top offensive lineman. He was converted to the difficult position of centre during the season. Ryley Bates, the season’s most improved player, was runner up to Jeremiah Ball as linebacker of the year. Also recognized were Jacob Clapmitt as runner up defensive lineup, Devon Winter as runner up defensive back, and Tyson Pashulka as rookie of the year runner up. Colton Katuski, offensive back of the year and runner up to Chilibeck as offensive player of the year, was one of only two graduating players. Katuski, one of the team captains and who played Marauder football from Grade 9, made gift presentations to the team’s coaches.

Elk Points Elks got the lead in the first two periods of the game, which kept the Vermilion Rock senior hockey team on their toes. It is commendable that the Rock didn’t give up, but continued to work harder and harder as the game progressed into the third period and they still had no score. The Elks had some good team work and great plays going for them, but Rock’s Randy Simmons (with the first goal for the Rock three minutes into the third period) and Lyndon Pulyk (with two consecutive goals shortly after) still managed to slip three nice shots in before the game was done, which made it a tie game. The tie didn’t last long, with 6:42 left in the final period, the Elks scored one goal followed by another two minutes later. That left 4:56 for the Rock to try to catch up, and they did...try that is. They made a consistent and steady effort to score right to the very end, but were halted by a good Elks defense and some great saves by the Elks goaltender, Paul Boulianne. One spectator commented that the better team won. “Elk Point has a stack of good players on their team.” The Elks are fifth in the current SaskAlta League standings, while the Vermilion Rock must have a comparable team because they are just below them in sixth place.

Female Hockey (Under 18) will be held from February 14 to 20. Male Hockey (Under 16) will be held February 22 to March 1. All games will be played at the CN Centre and Kin II Centre arenas.
