It’s A Bird!, It’s A Plane!.......It’s A Drone? Lindsey Montgomery Reporter Buying or selling a property? Have you ever heard of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) also called a drone? This unique vehicle is what Shawn Jacula, of RE/MAX Prairie Realty in Vermilion uses to showcase various properties for his clients. Jacula uses his drone to take pictures of real estate property from the air. Using this technology brings about questions from people who witness him operating this aerial equipment. Jacula is professionally equipped to take photos and videos safely with his UAV as he possesses a background in aviation. Jacula operates, via remote, a quadcopter (a helicopter with four rotars) with a camera attached to it that he uses to take photos or videos of real estate property from different elevations.

Jacula states the reason for bringing this technology on board for his business, is to give the seller the opportunity to showcase their property like never before, in turn having the buyer view the property in a remarkable and beneficial manner. In terms of marketing, Jacula can offer his sellers pictures and videos of their property. This technology is especially good for acreage or lake properties and is most commonly used in those cases. “It is perfect for use with large parcels of land. It gives a better idea and view of what is on the land and buildings around which would be unavailable for viewing from ground level” said Jacula. Weather permitting, Jacula will use his drone to capture what cannot be done via foot or even ATV use. ‘If you want to know what is behind that slough and are unable to get to it, the drone can’. drone, and for marketing purposes turn them into videos which he can make public or use just for the buyer and seller’s view. The UAV can capture dynamic shots as far as the eye can see. This technology is evolving everyday and becoming more popular. Jacula points out that he does not charge extra for this service. If the property can benefit from this technology he will bring his equipment. “Photography is a huge part of our (RE/MAX) business,

and that is why I have so much invested in it” Jacula explained. Jacula also uses this technology in and around the community for events that require aerial photography. A good picture can be used for such purposes as fundraising. Jacula explains although the technology is developing faster than the legalities of using unmanned aircrafts, Canada does have aviation provisions in place which are understood and followed in his business.

60 Days, 60 Communities, 60 Wells Lindsey Montgomery Reporter Imagine your life without water. Many of us unknowingly take for granted the fact that we can go to our kitchens or bathrooms and turn a knob and voila, fresh, clean, drinkable water is at our disposal. Water is wasted everyday in our country not to mention the insane amount of money paid to buy it from a bottle. Imagine living in a country stricken with a water crisis. Unfortunately water scarcity is a daily struggle for most people living in the developing world. Millions of hours are spent searching for clean water in hopes of making it through another day. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that every 21 seconds a child dies from a water related illness-which is curable. This statistic can be compared to a jumbo jet filled with a load of children crashing every 4 hours. But what can we do? This is what a few Canadian Cyclists decided they would do. After researching many organizations, Mike Woodard and Robert Montgomery decided they wanted to cycle across Canada and raise money and awareness for water wells in Africa. In partnership with GAiN (Global Aid Network) Woodard, Montgomery, two other cyclists Timo Itkonen, Richard Blaschek and support person Jacquie Blaschek began the journey in Victoria, BC. From Victoria they headed east and are making their way across the country to St.John’s, Newfoundland, which will comprise an almost 8500 km journey in 60 days. Cycling 4 Water is partnering with Global Aid Network Canada, and because the duo of friends are both turning 60 this year they came up with a fitting goal of 60 days, 60 wells, in 60 communities. Each deep capped well costs $8,500. Each well can provide a approximately 1000 people with a lifetime supply of clean, disease free water. For a donation of $8.50 you can provide one person with a lifetime supply of water. Woodard spoke about some of the heart tugging donations they have received thus far, such as people opening up their wallets and giving all the cash they could, as well as children emptying their piggy banks in order to donate what they had in their savings. Along with funds people have been providing them with things such as homemade sausage to provide ‘protein for the ride’ or hosting the crew on their properties as they pass through. So far the group has an impressive 20 wells pledged. “It’s very exciting, it’s a big project and we have amazing support” explained Woodard. There is a ‘well committee’ which comes in and teaches the receiving community how to use, care and maintain the well after it is set up. Woodard described how some days get tough, cycling through all types of weather and terrain and when he realizes how difficult the day is going to be he thinks to himself, “This will not be as difficult as it would be to watch my children die, because they do not have clean water. That keeps me going”. The cyclists next destinations are North Battleford, Saskatoon, then Regina and they will keep heading eest, where according to plan they will arrive in St.John’s on August 23. At the “Saving Every Woman, Every Child Summit” held in Toronto in May, Prime Minister Harper announced Canada’s commitment of $3.5 billion to improve the health of mothers and children for the period of 2015– 2020, supporting global efforts to end the preventable deaths of mothers, newborn and children younger than age five. Canada is committed to meeting humanitarian needs especially for urgent, conflict-affected and displaced people. Today, I would like to formally announce on behalf of Minister Christian Paradis and the Federal Government that Canada will contribute $1.5 million to the Inter-

national Committee of the Red Cross to provide clean water and medical supplies to affected people in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Canadians demonstrate their compassion by generously supporting relief efforts around the world. We have a long tradition of generously helping the world’s most vulnerable people and living up to the value’s we hold dear. “Mike, Rob, Timo and your support team Jacquie and Richard – you are demonstrating your compassion like true Canadians by drawing attention to such an important issue as clean water. RCMP Reports

Missing person, Imants Zarins Located and Deceased at Vehicle Collision Vermilion, Alberta - July 7, 2014 at approximately 1:45 p.m., Vermilion RCMP officers were advised of the discovery of a motor vehicle in dense brush off a gravel road in a rural area south of Innisfree, Alberta. The mid to late 1990’s Pontiac Grand Am had been discovered by a person walking in the area. The vehicle had come to rest against a tree. Upon arrival at the scene, RCMP officers discovered a single motor vehicle collision. A deceased man was located inside the vehicle and was subsequently identified as Imants ZARINS, a 35-yearold foreign worker from Latvia, who had been reported missing from Innisfree, Alberta on June 30, 2014. Mr. Zarins had last been seen on or about June 28, 2014 and reported missing after failing to show up for work. Mr. Zarins’ family has been notified of his passing. Early investigation suggests that Mr. Zarin died in the collision and this investigation is continuing. Foul play is not suspected.

Two Hills RCMP Investigate Theft Fuel Pumps Myrnam, AB - On July 2nd, 2014, Two Hills RCMP responded to a complaint of Theft of Fuel pumps from some tidy tanks in Myrnam, Alberta. The theft occurred on 50th Avenue sometime during the early morning on July 2nd. RCMP are asking residents to contact the detachment with any information they may have in relation to possible suspects or suspicious activity that they may have observed. Dangerous Driver Apprehended Ending Crime Spree On July 9th, 2014, in the evening, Vegreville RCMP received several complaints from the public reporting a dangerous driver within the Town of Vegreville. Vegreville RCMP were alerted to a stolen vehicle that had just rammed several vehicles that were parked on the street, as well as rammed a garage door to a residence and a pole. Vegreville RCMP quickly located 18 year old Brandon Samuel GLADUE of Edmonton in a nearby alley and took him into custody ending the crime spree. Brandon GLADUE has been charged with: theft of a motor vehicle, 3 counts of mischief under $5000.00, 1 count of mischief over $5000.00, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, 4 counts of failing to remain at the scene of an accident, 3 counts of breaching a probation order, obstructing a police officer, operating

a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s licence and operating an uninsured and unregistered vehicle. Brandon GLADUE has been remanded into custody and will be appearing in Vegreville Provincial Court on Monday, July 14th, 2014, at 1000 a.m. Elk Point - Fatal ATV Rollover Collision On July 6th at approximately 5:50 p.m., Elk Point RCMP and emergency services from Elk Point and area responded to serious injury collision involving a single All Terrain Vehicle on Range Road 41 and Twp 570 near Frog Lake First Nation. The investigation found that a 14 year old female had been driving south on range road 41 alone. The ATV entered the west ditch and collided with a fence post ejecting the female operator. The ATV then continued a short distance on its own. The female was located by family members unconscious, and unresponsive lying in the ditch. She was noted to have several internal and external injuries. She was not wearing a helmet. STARS Air Ambulance responded to the scene and air lifted the female to the University of Alberta Hospital. The female unfortunately succumb to her injuries while at hospital. While the file remains open, no charges are expected regarding this unfortunate incident. The name of the deceased will not be released at this time.

Tw o H i l l s R C M P I n v e s t i g a t e Commercial Break and Enters Two Hills, Alberta - On July 4, 2014, Two Hills RCMP officers responded to complaints of Break and Enters at the Two Hills Golf and Country Club and the Two Hills Aquatic Center. Upon arrival it was discovered that entry had been forced into each building, including a propane tank which was thrown through the back window of the Golf Course Club House. A small amount of money was taken in each instance. The investigation is on-going, however RCMP believe these Break and Enters to be related and were perpetrated by suspects who live in the community, as they appeared to know the configuration of each business. Heat Is Fatal Lorna Hamilton Editor

Summertime! It’s a glorious word that we all can’t wait to be able to say out loud, but it can literally be a fatal word! Heat kills and that’s a fact. Ever y year we hear and read of cases where children, elderly and pets are left in scorching cars for sometimes hours with no way out. It’s disturbing to think that with so much information out there about the effects of heat in cars so many people still make this mistake. The it can’t happen to me mentality needs to get nipped in the butt! I t f r u s t r a te s m e b eyo n d b e l i e f when you continually hear or read about cases of a child dying or being hospitalized because a parent left them in the car. A dog being left and dying from the heat in the car, like seriously we are an educated group of p e o p l e a n d th i s s h o u l d n ot b e happening. I am not writing this to point fingers or put blame on anyone, but

to tr y and get the word out there that this is such a dangerous action. Cars are not meant to be baby or pet sitting devices, they are meant only as a means of transportation. Some people may find this a disturbing topic but now that summer has really kicked it in I feel as though it is important to stress the fact that heat really does kill. While I was writing this editorial I was doing an experiment as I sat inside my truck with my windows up on a nice sunny morning. The temperature outside was 19 degrees Celsius, the sky had scatte re d cl o u ds that co m e a n d we nt over the sun which seemed to give me a little break from the heat, but I can tell you one thing, it was not pleasant sitting in there. I wa n te d to d o th i s te s t to s e e how long I could actually sit in my truck before I wanted to bust myself outside to get a semi-breath of air. I had only been sitting there for about five minutes and already it was starting to get so hot I could feel the air becoming harder to breath, I was sweating the same as if I was sitting in a sauna and I could feel myself

becoming tired. I wanted to put the window down but that would have co m p letely d es troye d my exp eriment. I am sure the temperature in the truck had already climbed five to six degrees. Fifteen minutes into sitting there and I was ready to jump out of this truck, I had cheated a couple times and put the window down and quickly back up to tr y and get some relief f r o m fe e l i n g l i k e I w a s a b o u t to suffocate. I was feeling like my brain wanted to shut down and just sleep, my lungs hurt and to be honest I was ready to quit. I am not sure what the temperature was in there but it was becoming unbearable. I cannot even imagin e what it would b e like in th ere with scorching temperatures of 30 degrees or more outside. That’s it, I’m done! I can not stay in this truck a single minute longer. I am sure the temperature had climbed at least 20- 30 degrees, I wish I had thought about a thermometer before I got the crazy idea of actually testing this for myself. (Remember I am sitting in an area where I can get help if I actually needed it, I wouldn’t

advise anyone to tr y this on their own). The best way to keep your loved ones safe, whether it is a child, an elderly person or a precious pet is to be vigilant. Never ever leave your vehicle with another person or animal left it in to swelter in the heat. Hyperthermia due to overheating is one of the leading causes of child vehicular non-impact deaths in Canada and the United States and it really needs to brought to the surface. If I see a child, an elderly person or a pet in a car I will not hesitate to take whatever necessary actions to get them out. Some ways to help prevent a child related vehicular death is to follow some pretty basic guidelines. Never leave a child in a car, lock your vehicle at all times so they can not enter the car by accident and lock themselves in there, look before you leave, get in the habit of checking your vehicle before you walk away. Together we can keep our children and our pets safe this summer, remember HEAT really does KILL!!

Fast Paced Game Between Vermilion Rage and the Tomahawks

On July 5 the senior lacrosse team Vermilion Rage played against Edmonton/ Spruce Groves Tomahawks in a fast paced game at the Vermilion Stadium. Goals were coming fast and hard as the game progressed with the first goal made by Vermilion Rage’s Randy Simmons, one minute and 47 seconds into the game. The second goal came shortly after by Tomahawks’, Thomas Sterparn three minutes and 39 seconds into the game. The Vermilion Rage came out on top with a final score of 19 to 10. Photo Lorna Hamilton.

These past couple of weekends I wanted to work on my pet project but I got rained out, pretty bad when it’s too wet to build an “Ark” ha ha. However, I did think I was going to float away one way or another. This past winter’s storms had taken shingles of the shop and I got to see exactly where each and every one was. I had more teapots set out there than at an ole British nanny’s convention. Ok they weren’t teapots, actually they were plastic pails, including all empty coffee containers I could find to put under the leaks from the intense downpours. Putting a teapot under a leak is just an old saying. From Friday to Friday last week we had six inches of rain in the rain gauge, 3 ½ inches that fell two Saturdays ago…that’s a lot of water all at once, however this week things are looking better with plenty of sunshine. I have to apologise for my “missing in action” columns the last two weeks. It wasn’t that I was washed away as I thought I was going to be, one got lost in cyber space and I have no idea where it went. And last week I was on “vacation”, which with all my adventure plans, it simply turned out just being one big long ‘Honey Do”, as the list was long and time went quick. I did get to do some of the chore list that was also getting much too long, such as getting into the garden that was like a floating jungles as weeding was lacking attention as 1 didn’t want to go in there with all the mud. I am sure I would have disappeared never to be seen again as with all the rain it was very soft, but wow, it looks awesome now and I am going to get a bumper crop out of this year’s garden. I also did get on the shop roof for repairs to the shingles that were damaged in the winter storms, when the rains did finally subside; it was very hot and sunny. Now I don’t know if you’ve ever been on an asphalt roof on a hot day, but I am here to tell you, one can double the outside temperature on there…its hell hot, and I spent four hours up there and used a complete five gallon pail of roofing tar. It was so hot that shingles were limp in my hands, like a wet newspaper, it was pure hell but perfect for patching a roof and it needed to be done, there were also some scary moments for me. The shop, at its highest point is close to 10 meters high, I used a 24 foot ladder

off the side of the rounded roof to get up there, now back in the day heights were not even a second thought. I used to power build houses, three guys with nothing but hand hammers and a power saw would build a house from the sub floor up in three days, and I used to walk on top of a 2x4 exterior wall two or three stories up like most walk down a side walk. Heights were never a problem for me but climbing up that 24 foot ladder that was just long enough if I crawled on to the roof with nothing to hang on to spooked me a bit. Now I don’t know if with age I became a little wiser, or it was just that I now understand fear and common sense, but dang that looked awful high or the ground sure looked far away. It may have something to do with an incident I had a few years ago while bowhunting by myself when I was undoing the ratchet belt that fastens a ladder stand to a tree. My feet were only 12 feet off the ground as I loosened the ratchet and as one of the legs was on a tree root and unknown to me the other in soft dirt, as I did so the ladder stand took off. I hit the ground at only about 10 feet… but sheeesh!...did that hurt, I still have shoulder issues from that incident…and it may be that very incident that made me “chicken” with age and wisdom. So it was safety first, ladder was on a solid base and I had my darling wife Roxanne hold the base of the ladder as a safety precaution…now here’s where the scary moments comes to play. Climbing onto the roof with a near too short ladder and nothing to hang onto is one thing, but sooner or later you have to come down, and as you look down at that ladder the ground looks soooo much further away now. With Roxanne firmly holding the ladder I slowly swung my feet over the edge, I almost froze in fear at that point, that was until I pictured the front page headlines of this fine newspaper reading…”Terrified Outdoorsmen Rescued Off Roof By Fire Department!!! That and all I could think of is “the farm is paid for” if something should happen to me and was I nice to the wife this morning…but soon my feet were solidly on a ladder rung and hands were firmly gripping ladder. I sighed at the very top of the ladder and paused for a break, that’s when a little skiff of wind came up making the ladder wobbly, so I looked down at my ground safety person…my wife. What I saw near me scream out loud like a school girl…there was my safety person

texting on a phone…and um…NOT holding the ladder…but I evidently and eventually make it safely to the ground. However, note to self…* Check pockets of ground safety personnel for phones if said person is a woman!!! Well I did sneak out for a few nature hikes, set up some trail cameras and some fishing, but that was far too short for mentionable adventures, but I have a few of those in the works. Also bowhunting adventures will be many very soon as there is only 54 sleeps until bowhunting season, which will come quick as I am twice as busy now in my archery Pro shop helping bow hunters get ready. Get out there…this is what we waited seven long months for… When the Smoke Clears Only a foolish man tells a woman to stop talking on the phone…as I grew wiser I simply told her that her lips look so beautiful when they are still.

When the extent of my injuries became painfully evident, I can honestly said I was shaken to the core. How or even why such a thing could befall me right out of the blue was really a shocker, I can tell you. I can only tell you that suddenly not being able to even use the washroom without help is a real hit to your humility. I thought it had to be the worst of times, but do you know it was only just the beginning!! It was hard to keep from being overcome with despair, even though I had, had the assurance from the MRI specialist that my injury would heal and I would totally recover. The only joker being, he said, I’d have to work at it. I resolved that no matter what it took, I would do my best to fully regain my mobility and get back to my former activities. Every day that passed and my left leg remained like a member with a mind of its own certainly left me to wonder, but after about a week I was heartened to realize I could at least move my left foot and could realize things were happening. Marc the therapist at the Royal Alex got me started on parallel bars and with the help of a strong belt and two helpers I could manage several rounds I was getting starte,. Bless his heart, Marc took the initiative to get me a room in the rehab Glenrose and the advanced program there. In a week or so I was able to go to the washroom on my own and take a wheel chair to the dining room. I felt I was starting on the road that led to home and life as it had been before. But, like all roads to anywhere there are obstacles to avoid and rough spots to slow you down to keep you on your toes and 3” there wideare version wary. Soon I found powers that

need to be reckoned with that had nothing to do with health and your best interest, so I had a few skirmishes with the people who were using me for their own personal ego booster and left this old cowboy having to assert my own will a bit. I guess I won as they didn’t kick me out but things were a bit strained at times and the diet certainly never improved. I have to say I was never so hungry for such a long time in my life before and hope never again!! Every day except for weekends. I did therapy from about 9 a.m. to 12:30 pm. And it entailed hard physical work outs to exercises that were to improve my reflexes and dexterity. Very good deal. I did everything that was required and most instances 2 or 3 times as many. Yes, I worked hard. Came that 50 below weekend I was going to go to my son Gordon’s but thought I’d better stay. Anyway my doctor friend informed me that my driver’s license had been suspended and no matter what I did I couldn’t regain it for an indefinite period. It seemed to give him a lot of cheer to see my reaction. I felt the bottom had fallen out of my pail about then. Thank goodness I had my harmonica in my van at son Jim’s and he brought me one in so I could play away my frustrations. The recreation director heard my playing as she passed by my room and came in and asked if I’d play for people in our station in the dining room, and I did. First time in the hospitals history, I was told, and it sure lifted me. I was also asked to come to special breakfasts every Tuesday after and had my confidence restored. I know then I WAS going to win and there was nothing going to stop me if it was in any way possible. Next thing I knew I was signed to be able to go unassisted to the dining room in a four wheeled walker and that was another huge step. Then one day the trainer said he was going to show me several models and I could buy one to take home.

I hardly slept all night, thinking about lugging that thing around for the rest of my time and decided it was time to take the training wheels off the bicycle! Tai took a long hard look at me and went for helping to make and got a cane and adjusted it for me. I was my 90th Birthday Party signed out to be on my own with that cane so memorable. and I was then so totally convinced I’d had enough therapy and wanted to go home. Historians tell us that it took Buddha (born Siddhartha Gautama) six years of contemplation in the shade of a B o d hi tre e to a chi eve e n li g hte nment, or Nirvana. He spent the rest of his life teaching others about the concepts he had come to understand, encouraging his followers to seek quality in life through disengagement from material attachment. Human beings----a great many of us anyway----yearn for the comfort found in assurances, absolutes, and truths. Whether our spiritual beliefs are based in Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, or any one of the multitudes of other isms practised in our world, that we continue to search for deeper understanding confirms a collective, inher-

ent desire to believe that there exists a superior place or state of being. We need only to find the road that leads us to it. We sometimes joke between o u r s e l ve s t h a t i t ’s b e s t to avo i d discussions concerning either religion or politics unless we’re prepared to hear commentar y diametrically opposed to our own. There’s no humour, though, in arguing over whose belief trumps another’s. More often than not discussions terminate abruptly, with no one having altered their thinking in any way. We’re all right, of that each one of us seems certain. No one wins and the argument is moot. Even when we can’t verbalize the b a sis fo r o u r sp e cif ic b eliefs, we often hesitate to question longstanding structure in any form. Those who do may find themselves rejected by their peer group or, in extreme cases, by an entire community. You don’t

mess with established belief systems lightly. People kill each other over perceived insults to strong beliefs (refer to causes of human conflict from the beginning of recorded history). People go to war to defend their attachment to beliefs. It can be dangerous territory to tread indeed. Yet, despite the knowledge that questioning might bring on tumult or personal harm in some form or a n oth e r, th e re h ave a lway s b e e n those who are driven to seek out their own answers to the great questions. Why am I here? What is my purpose? How do I know I am on the right path to achieve it? We have sometimes been cautioned against ‘blindly following precedent’. Because a practise or belief has been adhered to in the past does not mean it will remain valid into the indefinite future. Thinking people understand this and know that with the acquisition of new knowledge must come change

and adjustment to a new order. We b elieve what we b elieve but sometimes we don’t have any real reasons to support our beliefs. We may not think much about how we have come to believe what we believe; we just do. Our beliefs may not even be our own, but someone else’s, like our parents, our mentors, or authorities we have come to trust. It can be unsettling to question what we’ve simply accepted as unequivocal truth, no matter what the subject. From the most inconsequential to the critical, from the spiritual to the political, we might come closer to achieving a sense of meaning in our lives if we strive to discover our own truths on our own terms. In deeper, more serious matters, our quests may take us on journeys of discovery that last a lifetime. And what of it? Time passes regardless of how we spend our allotment of it. Quality, though, is priceless.

Lakeland College Students To Benefit From Upgrading Simulator Lakeland College Submitted E n e rg y p ro g r a m m i n g s t u d e n t s a t L a ke l a n d C o l l e g e’s Ll oyd m i nster campus will be able to simulate complete heavy oil upgrading processes thanks to a donation from Husky Energy. Husky, in partnership with Invensys, donated a specialized simulator and software to the college’s Energy Centre. “We know how vital hands-on experience is to learning,” said Husky CEO Asim Ghosh. “Husky depends on skilled workers and is committed to developing skilled trades capacity in Canada.” “This technology is phenomenal for heavy oil training and we’re thrilled that Husky donated it to us for use in the new facility. This will help our students live the learning and develop skills that industry needs,” said Dr. Tracy Edwards, president of Lakeland College.

Husky and Lakeland College have also signed a contract extension that will see $360,000 donated over the next three years for power engineering scholarships. As many as five awards of $22,000 each will be given annually to second-year heavy oil power engineering students to help with education-related costs. Lakeland and Husky have a long history. In 2012 Husky donated $750,000 towards construction of the Energy Centre, plus $360,000 to start the scholarship program. Including today’s announcements, Husky has donated more than $2 million in cash and gifts-in-kind since 2011. These donations continue Husky’s support of Lakeland College and its students through capital campaigns, student awards and curriculum development, and practicum placements and employment. Construction of the Energy Centre is nearing completion. It’s anticipated that students who start the heavy oil

operations technician and heavy oil power engineering programs this fall will have access to two 50-seat simulation labs, a common area and change rooms. Equipment in the power lab, including a two-storey distillation tower and four boilers, will be commissioned this fall and should be opera-

tional by 2015. Lakeland College has campuses in Lloydminster, Alta./Sask. and Vermilion, Alta. and serves more than 7,500 students each year.

Summer is wedding season and with that comes decorating for and attending bridal showers. The internet has become an important source of ideas with many specialty blogs and Pinterest. I recently was asked to decorate for my niece’s bridal shower. My daughter in law was at home when I got the call, and she immediately starting searching the internet on her i Pad for ideas to help me out. We had to come up with something that not only would look great, but was easy to put together with available resources. She came across a picture of two vintage teacups stacked on top of each other and

then the saucer. Inside was a beautiful rose in full bloom, filling up the cup like a rose bowl. Since I already have a collection of old vintage tea cups at my shop, which are used for tea parties, I knew that this was an idea that would be both elegant and easy to pull off. I selected a blue and mauve colour scheme (the bride’s favourite colours). Fortunately I was able to find a bundle of mauve roses. I cut each one short and popped one into the top cup with a little baby’s breath. I discovered while putting the centerpieces together that it was better to put a larger tea cup on the top and a smaller one on the bottom for better stacking. Inexpensive blue and mauve table cloths were found at the dollar store for each table. I needed a little something special to go under the centerpieces.

As I cruised the store wondering what to use, I spotted packages of light purple and white polka dot wrapping paper that I knew would have the vintage appeal I was looking for. It was perfect cut into 12” squares, placed in a diamond orientation, to go under the teacup centerpieces. A little sprinkle of purple confetti on each table, repeated the polka dot motif and finished the table décor, now ready to bring on the tea, cake and shower games. At this shower, another niece was in charge of the shower games and activities. Guests were asked to take as much toilet paper as they would like, which they did with puzzlement. When all ladies had completed this task it was announced, much to our relief, that the lady who had the length closest to the bride’s height,

won one of the prizes. Another game included guessing the contents of the bride’s purse! A book was passed around for guests to write their best advice for a happy marriage. Then came the “how well do you know your future husband” test, where the bride was asked a question, and she had to answer it the way her future husband already had, or else chew a piece of bubble gum. I have seen shingles that curl due to a manufacturers defect but most often the problem is due to an overheated attic space. I have been in attics that are over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. When the attic is poorly ventilated it creates an air trap and acts more like an oven then an attic. As a result the shingles may cup and curl. You might also find shingles that have alligatoring or severe cracks. From my experience I believe the three tabbed shingles are more likely to deform due to the heat described above. AFSC Increases Hail Coverage Levels to Better Protect Crops With Vermilion-area crops finally seeded and starting to grow, farmers across the province are hoping for a quieter hail season this summer following record levels of hail damage over the past two years. “Last year marked the third highest amount of hail damage to crops across Alberta in our 77 years as a provincial hail insurer,” says Jackie Sanden, p ro g r a m co o rd i n a to r with Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). “Our branches reported 522 storm cells last year that pelted crops with hail from Fort Vermilion to the US border. The damage was widespread. Southern Alberta and ‘Hail Alley’ – which stretches westward along Highway 2 from Rocky Mountain House to Calgary, and eastward through Wheatland County – were particularly hard hit.” More than $257 million was paid out on more than 6,400 hail claims across Alberta last year, including the County of Vermilion River, through AFSC’s Straight Hail Insurance program and the Hail Endorsement rider that most farmers add to their crop insurance. The highest claim year was in 2012 when $445.6 million was paid on more than 8,400 claims. “Alber ta’s top three years for record hail damage have all occurred in the last six years,” says San den, notin g 20 0 8 marked the second highest year with $263 million in claims paid out. Ingredients for Hail Environment Canada meteorologist Dan Kulak says wet spring weather and unusually high humidity over the last few years have likely contributed to the amount of hail in Alberta lately. “Humidity and ground moisture fuel thunderstorms that produce hail,” says Kulak, noting other ingredients include heat and a trigger to set everything in motion. “That trigger can be simple daytime heating, causing warm air to rise and mix with cooler air above. Another trigger is the jet stream – that river of air that storms tend to follow – which flows over the mountains and right through the middle of Alberta every summer,” he explains. The mountains play a huge role in thunderstorm formation. They’re the reason Alberta tends to get more hail than anywhere else in Canada, says Kulak. “You can be sure Alberta

will get hail this year. The question is how much,” he says, noting every part of the province is susceptible to hail. “The wetter things get in June, the more storms we can end up with because the moisture just keeps recycling itself.” Straight Hail Coverage Increased As farmers brace themselves for the coming hail season, AFSC is increasing the coverage levels offered through its Straight Hail Insurance program. “Producers have asked us to boost the coverage caps to help them protect their crops and cover their hail risk more effectively. As

such, we’re raising the maximum coverage farmers can insure on most crops to better reflect today’s higher crop values and rising input costs,” says Sanden. Coverage has increased by a minimum of $75 per dryland acre and $175 on irrigated crops, with significant increases on potatoes, says Sanden. “We’ve also created new coverage categories for higher-value crops like chickpeas and canola, which can now be insured for $325 per dryland acre, and $425 on irrigated crops. Last year his fields suffered minor hail damage, but Wipf says the year before was his worst hail loss ever. The first storm battered about 6,000 acres early in the growing season. Alberta farmers since 1938 when special legislation was passed creating the Alberta Hail Insurance Board, which later became AFSC. “Farmers needed someone to offer hail insurance in every corner of the province, because back then it wasn’t available everywhere; the risk was too high,” says Sanden. “That same need exists today because hail is still the biggest risk Alberta farmers face each year. We continue to offer hail insurance in every township, and we don’t limit the number of acres we’ll insure,” she says, noting AFSC’s mandate has broadened today to include the delivery of all-risk crop insurance, livestock price insurance, lending, and income stabilization programs on behalf of government.

Vermilion Parade Lindsey Montgomery Reporter From Wagon Wheels to Ferris Wheels is Vermilion’s 108th Agricultural Fair and Parade theme. Chairman of the Parade Committee Russ Cameron talks about how he and the committee members are busy organizing for what has always turned out to be a successful event “It’s a lot of fun, it’s one of the best committees to be on.” Cameron explained. There are no entry fees or registrations. All floats are welcome to show up and be a part of the event. The parade starts Thursday July 24 at 11 am. Cameron revealed the special thing about this year is the bands. Every year the Vermilion Band participates in the parade “and we are very fortunate to have them” Cameron boasted. “But this year we have added two more confirmed bands to the parade”. One band is coming from Edmonton and they are named the Panaahe Band. They have eight instruments with the potential of eighteen pieces being brought to play. Cameron described them to be “a very excited young group of people”. Myrnam is providing the parade with a band as well named Daihlmers Realm which consists of a four piece instrument band who provides their own wagon to play on. The music is a very important part of the parade and will draw the crowd’s attention. Cameron describes a crowd pleasing float “Make it loud, have music, sound and colour!” Cameron talked about some of the work involved and the many people it takes to ensure everything runs smoothly and everyone has a good time. “You could have a very bad wreck very quickly, so we anticipate all scenarios and put safety measures in place for them. You learn over the years what needs to be done, and I’ve been a part of the team for about 33 years now” says Cameron. Judging starts at 10 a.m., at Lakeland Mall. Floats should arrive no later than 9:30 a.m. for judging. “If you do not want to participate in the judging, you can still arrive at 10:30 a.m. for the parade” said Cameron. There are ten categories for judging which will offer a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize ribbon. These categories are: Commercial, Out-of-Town, Senior Organization, Junior Organization, Comic, Decorated Cars, Antique, Pioneer, Decorated Bikes and Decorated Ponies. Bring your float to the Lakeland Mall and you will be designated a place by the parade committee members. The parade is a great way to showcase your business. People from all surrounding areas participate and attend which brings in a large crowd. The parade will take off at 11 a.m. and follow the traditional route starting at Lakeland Mall to Railway Avenue turning right at 49th St. left on 50th Ave. continuing to 51st St. where it will turn south returning to Railway Ave finally merging with 50th Ave and ending near the Vermilion Health Care Centre. The parade will last for about an hour. The Vermilion Health Care Centre will also be having a Barbeque at noon with hot dogs and hamburgers. Due to the previous success of the pilot program, it has now become permanent, and provides a great opportunity for small and mediumsized (SME) businesses to get their innovative products and services from the lab to the marketplace.” The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works, also announced that the Government of Canada has pre-qualified 72 innovations under the fourth round of the BCIP. Over the coming months, Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) will match the pre-qualified innovations from the fourth call with various government departments. T h e B C I P e n c o u rages Canadian entrepreneurs to submit innovative designs that can potentially help departments find solutions for achieving their operational objectives. If innovations are successfully matched with a department’s needs, businesses will have their pre-commercial innovative products and services tested within a government environment and will receive valuable feedback. More specifically, the program aims to: o support Canadian suppliers in doing business with the federal government; o provide a realworld evaluation of precommercial goods and services through feedback from government testing departments; and o improve the efficiency and effectiveness of government operations by having direct access to innovative goods and services. “The value of contacts under the standard component of the BCIP will continue to be up to $500,000,” explained Benoit. “Under the militar y component, that figure could double. It’s important to remem-

You may have recently heard in the media about the provincial government working to keep aquatic invasive species (AIS) out of our water bodies. Or you may have come across the b i l l b o a rd by th e Ve r m i l i o n we i g h station on Hwy 16 that reads ‘Clean, Drain, Dry Your Boat.’ The purpose of this boat inspection station is to minimize the risk of invasive species into our waterways by early detection of AIS invaded boats. The main species of concern right

These critters potentially could have an e co n o m i c risk to o u r p rovi n ce of millions and millions of dollars. These mussels may hitch a ride on boats that have been recreating in other out of province areas such as Lake Winnipeg, then return to Alberta and that person may be unaware of a water reservoir left in their boat or even a mussel that has attached itself. If boats are not properly cleaned, drained and dried they have potential to cause major infestations, as these mussels can survive for 30 days out of water. More Than $20,000 In Scholarships Awarded To Students Lakeland College Submitted

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (JUNE 26, 2014) — For the ninth consecutive year, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) and GE Appliances are proud to announce the winners of the NKBA/ GE Charette Competition, which awards students with more than $20,000 in scholarships. The competition recogn ize s s tu d e nt s w h o d e m o n s trate advanced skill in kitchen design by planning a safe, functional kitchen within a three-hour period. “There is an incredible level of talent and creativity among the students at NKBA-accredited colleges,” said Brandon Hochhalter, Design and Merchandising Manager for GE Monogram. “Each year we recognize the outstanding designs integrating GE Monogram® appliances in the kitchen. GE would like to congratulate all the finalists for their excellent designs and wish them continued success in the future.” Close to 20 0 students from 19 colleges participated in the challenge, which included creating a kitchen floor plan with specifications, along with a design statement and perspective or elevation of a kitchen featuring GE appliances, completed within three hours. Each of the colleges chose up to three local winners to receive $50. “ We a re p ro u d to s u p p o r t t h e programs that will help develop student designers into the future generation of professional designers,” said 2014 NKBA president John Petrie, CMKBD. “When students have targeted their area of interest in the kitchen and bath industry, we want to offer them opportunity to

hone their interest and ability and turn it into a real skill and a solid career.” The design challenge: Create a kitchen using GE Monogram® brand appliances, which offer commercial-grade features for clients Janice and Larry Ketron. The family entertains at least once a month and they have requested to remove the wall between the kitchen and family room as well as extend the counter on the same side of the kitchen as the sliding glass door, which will increase the gathering space for meals. All designs must adhere to the NKBA Planning Guidelines, as well as to the NKBA Graphic and Presentation Standards. The Government of Alberta issued the following statement in response to the announced review of the Canada Transpor tation Ac t by the federal government. “We welcome the federal government’s continuing efforts to enhance the long-term safety and dependability of our transportation network.

Being able to effectively move goods to market is essential in maintaining Canada’s export economy. “Market access is an issue that goes beyond any one industry or commodity group. I know Albertans will enjoy having a say on what their new provincial licence plate will look like.” Dave Hancock, Premier The licence plate, which will be available in spring 2015, is being updated to bring it in line with other jurisdictions across North America. The new plate will include: Alberta’s new logo;

Careers A&W Holds Garage Sale To Help End MS

On the morning of July 12, workers of the local A&W were setting up the large amount of items donated from the community for their two day fundraising garage sale. All funds from the garage sale are going to the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society of Canada in efforts to end MS. The garage sale was held July 12 and 13 in the restaurant’s parking lot. Another sale will be held on July 26 and 27th. Donations are still being accepted for the next garage sale. These donations can be dropped off at the restaurant or A&W Manager, Maud Crews can be contacted at 780-853-2987 for arrangements to be made for pickup within the Vermilion vicinity. Maud spoke of the event by saying “I would like to say thank you to the community for all their donations. Interior Design Technology Students Excel In NKBA GE Charette Competition Lakeland College Submitted

With a third place finish and three honourable mentions, Lakeland College interior design technology students stood out among close to 200 competitors in a kitchen design competition. Breanne Corey of Pike Lake, Sask., recently learned she placed third in the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) and GE Appliances Charette Competition. Honourable mentions went to Lakeland’s Erica Shaw of Mayerthorpe, Alta., Charles Kimball of Forestburg, Alta. and Megan MacNaughton of Nor th Battleford, Sask. MacNaughton also received an honourable mention in NKBA’s bathroom design competition last fall. Only 10 winning student designers were acknowledged. “To have four of our students place in this competition is a feather in our cap. We’re a small college so for our students to do this well is something we’re very proud of,” says instructor Fiona McLeod. There were entries from 19 NKBA-accredited colleges and universities including Brigham Young University – Idaho which had three award-winning entries. “It’s a pretty exciting accomplishment for our program and our college to have that many people recognized,”

says Corey, who received a $3,000 scholarship while her classmates − and fellow Class of 2014 graduates − won $1,000 each. “But the program is very, very good and the teachers are really supportive and helpful.” Lakeland students participated in the charette competition this spring. The second year students were challenged to design a safe, functional kitchen within a three-hour period. They had to create a kitchen floor plan with specifications, along with a design statement and perspective or elevation of a kitchen featuring GE appliances. “Three hours is not a lot of time. I drew a couple of layouts, picked the one I liked best and got to work,” says Corey, who grew up on a ranch and intended to take Lakeland’s veterinary medical assistant program. An allergy to rubbing alcohol forced her to change her plans and she’s happy she chose the interior design technology program. She graduated with honours and now works as a junior designer at Metric Design Centre in Saskatoon. Of the six designers at the centre, four are Lakeland alumni.
