Mannville Canada Day Celebrations Lorna Hamilton Reporter The Village of Mannville jumpstarted its Canada Day Celebrations on July 1 with approximately 500 people in attendance for the pancake breakfast at the gazebo held by the Chamber of Commerce. During the breakfast the crowd was entertained with music from Franklin Wolters, a Vermilion resident. The opening ceremonies, the National Anthem and the cake cutting was also held at the gazebo with guest speaker Dr. Richard Starke and Master of Ceremonies Canada Day Coordinator Kelly Dalton who said, “ Over forty businesses, families, and community groups sponsored the event, along with 50 volunteers for the day. For a village of around 800 people that is a fantastic show of community spirit” Also held at the gazebo on Main Street

Also throughout the afternoon there was a dunk tank with the proceeds going to the Citizens on Patrol. The last of the afternoon activities from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. was a BBQ supper held by the Rural Crime Watch. The last activities of the Day were a Free Family Movie including popcorn and water at the recreation center which had a great turn out of about 90 people. The evening ended with a packed parking lot of attendees at the recreation center for the last activity of the day. Fireworks!! The children seemed in awe of the bright colours and loud bangs.

As the morning moved on at approximately 11:50 a.m. new to the Mannville Canada Day Celebrations were two F18 Fighter Keys from the ‘Royal Canadian Air Force Fly By’ that did a fly over the town. By the afternoon there were numerous activities held at the Mannville ball diamonds including, bouncy castles where children could go and bounce their hearts out. Long lines of people waited to get an opportunity to ride in Wild West Monster Truck “Orange Express” for $5 and to watch Monster truck “Western Rene-

RCMP Reports a missing person. On 30 June 2014, Imants ZARINS, aged 35, failed to show up for work and has not been se en since. Z ARI NS is a fo reign worker from Latvia who is employed at a business in Innisfree, Alberta, 150km east of Edmonton, ZARINS is described as slender, approximately 6 foot 4 inches tall, weighing 175 lbs. He has is clean shaven with shor t blonde hair. There have been many recent events involving missing children and adults, such as the cases of the three missing people from Calgary, 5 year old Nathan O’Brien, 66 year old Alvin Liknes, 53 year old Kathryn Liknes who went missing June 29, missing foreign worker Imants Zarins 35 who is employed in Innisfree went missing on June 30, Nakayo Poucetter 13 from Red Deer who on Friday had still not been found. I c o u l d s i t h e r e fo r h o u r s a n d continue to list each and every missing person from the province of Alberta but unfortunately I don’t have the space to do so however, it does not make one case any less important than the other! Si n ce I wo r k i n th e n ew s p a p e r industry, I constantly see amber alerts and RCMP alerts regarding missing individuals and it has got me thinking about the turmoil each of these families must be going through. I can not imagine the heartache and worry they

all carry. The Missing Children Society of Canada states on their website that they typically receive two to three calls per day, or approximately 800 calls per year, from searching families. The topic here is not really about statistics of the number of people who go missing each day or each year it’s more about the personal hell these families must go through and the judgements passed upon them. It is about how would you or I deal if put in this tragic situation; how would you respond to the news that one of your family members were missing? We look to the media reports and we as hu ma n b ein gs a re quick to pass judgement on how these families portray themselves by listening to every word and how it is spoken. We watch their body language to see if they have tears, if so we try to judge whether or not these tears are real or fake? We all play investigators. We all try to determine if these families or a member of these families is actually guilty of some devious act against their own family. Let’s not be naive, there are bad people in this world and there are times

when a family member is responsible for the loved ones disappearance but, generally speaking, families are innocent and are going through their own personal turmoil. I know as a mother, sister and aunt I have thought considerably over the last few days how I would react if I ever had to go through the dilemma of having a member of my family go missing. I can vividly imagine the reaction I would have when I discovered it. I would be in denial at first, it can’t be true. It would be like I entered my own personal torture chamber. I can remember a time when I could not find my daughter in a department store, I had taken my eyes off her for a minute while looking at the clothes and when I turned to speak with her she was gone. The feeling of panic which consumed me was so overwhelming I practically ran through the aisles calling her name. I hated myself for being so careless (as I thought at the time) for not watching her closely enough. The thoughts of what I would do if someone had taken her away from me was unbearable. How could I go on with my

Letter to the Editor Our Low-Tax Plan Is Working Dear Editor, Contrary to the statements made by Ralph Goodale in a recent Letter to the Editor, infrastructure is one of our Conser vative Government’s top priorities. These findings support the report by the New York Times that Canada’s middle class is thriving under our Conservative Government and is now the “richest in the world.” C anada’s fiscal and economic strength is something of which we should all b e proud. O ur G overnm e n t w i l l co n ti n u e to ke e p t a xe s low, support job creation, and stay on track to balance Canada’s budget in 2015 so that we can deliver even more tax relief for families. Reading in the news and watching the family of the three missing people in Calgary plea for the safe return has brought me to thinking how I would react if I knew that my loved one could be missing forever or the unthinkable may never come back to me alive. The fact is it would be unimaginable I can not put myself in their shoes. These families of each and every person who are missing needs the support of every one of us. They need the word to get out there about their missing loved one. They need the tips and calls from anyone who may know even the smallest piece of information. In short they do not need our judgements and criticism, they need our help. A motto I have always tried to live by I think sums it up “ Never judge a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes, as their burdens are far beyond any reality you can ever imagine.”

On Being Different Franklin Wolters Columnist

I g u es s in reality we are all to some degree individuals and that makes us human beings different from most other animals. We are to some extent like Lemmings in that we don’t as a rule want to stand out alone, right? We just go along with the accepted way. Peer pressure starts when we first go to school, and we soon find that if we dress differently or have a somewhat unique way of thinking we’re soon made to feel like an outcast. Maybe even feel the ravages of being bullied, all though history if we look back will see that any new idea was greeted with skepticism and very much resistance to any kind of change or acceptance. Every change meant someone had to come up with an idea that probably went against the norm at the time. Remember the world was once thought to be flat and there was danger if you became too adventurous you could sail off the edge!! The first time men who dared to sail to look for new land and riches took their lives in their hands to prove that theory wrong. Maybe I’d make a point if I related to more recent history, I can remember when no lady would ever go out in public wearing slacks or such as, as many do now. I can remember Mom working in her garden with bib overalls on, would dash for the house if she heard the jingle of a team coming or the sound of a vehicle, and quickly get out of her overalls

and slip on a dress and apron like most housewives thought proper. I’m not making that up !! When I was a youngster the accepted way to feed cattle was with a proper rack and sleigh pulled by a team or maybe four horses for a long haul and you forked every morsel of the feed by hand. I can remember how reluctant folks were to change from the old reliable team that was the norm back then. I’ll wager you’d be hard pressed to find a team and sleigh on most any farms raising cattle now-a- days. I remember too, how my Dad resisted turning to the new method of harvest that relegated the threshing machine and binder to the fence corners and brought on the combine and swathers. He just wasn’t interested in cutting his crop to lay on the ground, and have a combine and dribble his precious straw on the ground beyond recovery he thought. It was quite a victory bro and I thought, when we achieved that great stride that the neighbors had been doing for years already!! Yes, we do resist change and its really something to be different and be brave enough to go against the grain and dare live that idea against all the strains of social peer pressure. I can remember the arguments I got when I voiced to my family I longed to be a pilot. What could be more impractical and dangerous? My old Father- in-law voiced the opinion that a man with a wife and five children should have more sense then to squander money like that!! You can imagine how flying was even more dangerous and impractical when it was first accom-

plished and how it was scoffed at by all the “Intellectuals”, of the time. To see how wrong they were, visit the international airport at any holiday season. Yes new ideas are often met with fierce opposition, I know I for one do resist the new age of communication we have all around us and wonder how it can ever sustain itself. There’s just to many reasons it can get out of control, I feel, like fuel to fire and be more destructive then beneficial. I’ve never committed myself too much to the whole KABOODLE. The real reason for my story is the idea of a low carbohydrate diet, that I’ve found to be my saviour in my present state of diabetes. Years ago now my friend Phylis Cullen had read an article in the “Readers Digest” that told how the author had been sent to the west coast to work with the nature out there where blood sugar problems were epidemic, He thought to get them back on their regular diet of wild game, fish and berries and soon the blood sugar problems were diminished. He got two other dieticians to help him and they wrote a book dedicated to promote this idea of lowering the intake of carbs to help in this blood sugar problem. I believe we have it all around us, when I was a patient in two hospitals recently I endeavored to maintain my low carb diet and I was told it wasn’t legal or possible to live on that diet. They just couldn’t do it. If I needed that kind of food I’d have to have friends or family supply it. A new idea against all reason they said. I rest my case!!!

If you start in an urban area and head toward the country for a half day adventure, you’ll experience a full spectrum walk. That’s the kind that combines the smooth, predictable concrete surfaces of civilization with the uneven terrain of horse paths and open fields of country. Depending upon how much time you already regularly invest in walking and what you choose as footware for your journey, your feet may sing or they may wail. They may or may not support your endeavour to its end. You will learn something about yourself either way. Motivation comes more easily if you have access to desirable walking places.

Country walks offer serenity, natural surroundings, and quiet, mosquitoes and black flies notwithstanding. Remember to respect private landowners’ No Trespassing signs. In well-planned urban areas, a walk will include encounters with green spaces and benches where walkers can pause to contemplate a pleasant view. It’s easier to convince yourself to take a walk if the journey can be augmented with pleasurable visual, aural, and auditory experiences. It’s helpful, too, if you can walk without fear of being chased, stalked, or mugged. Of course, unless you’re a sprint walker, walking generally requires that you slow yourself down. If you leave too little time between obligations, choosing to walk may only leave you tense, aggravated, and sweaty. Maximum benefit

from movement without motors occurs when you can ‘take time to stop and smell the roses’. Breathe, don’t hyperventilate. How many birds can you identify by their song? Listening to their calls, especially in the early morning or evening is especially uplifting. If, in your world, you can no longer hear the birds for the road traffic or the jabber going on in your busy mind, it may be time to seek out an alternate route. There’s something about walking that invites new ideas. The action is concurrently invigorating and calming. It sometimes seems that distractions and obstacles diminish while walking, inspiration or a new outlook arising in their places. When we’re engaged in the full body movement required for walking,

we reclaim and reconnect our physical, cognitive, and spiritual powers. We work things out along the way, sometimes arriving at solutions to challenges that previously seemed overwhelming. Here is a new su m m e r s a l a d to try. Avocado in a salad is a great way to get more of its healthy fat. The fat in avocados is monosaturated, and helps to lower bad cholesterol. Avocados contain many anti-inflammatory compounds that help prevent arthritis, promote heart health and help to regulate blood sugar. Preliminary research has found compounds in avocado to be protective

of healthy cells, but promotes cell death in cancer cells. This salad also contains tomato, which is a source of lycopene. Avocado and tomato are a good combination in this salad, as the carotenoid compounds in the avocado increase our body’s ability to absorb the beneficial lycopene in the tomato and the carotenoids in the corn. Lycopene is important in prevent certain cancers, such as prostate. Both avocado and corn are good sources of fiber. Like avocado, corn is also high in many important anti-oxidants. Olives, all varieties are a nutritional store house of a large vari-

Innisfree United Church Now Closed Lindsey Montgomery Reporter Innisfree United Church held its last service Sunday June 22 in its original building which was built in 1906. The United Church of Canada is an amalgamation of the Union of Methodists, Presbyterian and Congregational

Churches which happened in 1925. Joan Anderson, an Innisfree community member and member of the Innisfree United Church Board, said the building will be sold as per the board’s decision. People can now go to the Seniors Lodge as the new place of worship. Worship will commence on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month.

Ice on a roof can happen naturally with quick changes in the weather but more often than not the problem starts in the attic. When ice forms on the shingles near the eaves it is generally due to heat buildup in the attic that melts the snow on the roof causing ice damming and leaks. A properly designed home will provide an air space at the eaves called soffit vents. These vents allow cool outside air to enter the attic at the eaves and literally mix and push the warm air up and out the roof and gable vents. When all the vents are sized and designed correctly that attic should stay cold throughout the winter and cool most of the summer. Dewberry Ag Society Talks Arena Plans Lindsey Montgomery Reporter

D ew b e r r y Ag r i c u l t u r a l S o c i e t y talked about their arena plans in a recent interview. M e m b e r s of th e so ciet y gave a briefing on the history of the area along with some details on a new facility project which is the building of a new arena. Starting the conversation Laurie Bowman, Dewberry AG Society member, shared these facts. T h e D ew b e r r y AG S o ci et y i s i n the process of tr ying to build the community, beginning with a new arena. Plans for this arena began four years ago. The County of Vermilion River hired an engineering firm to do a study of the existing recreational facilities in the CVR. Initial studies to the recreational areas came back with reports stating extensive restoration work needed to be done on the Dewberry arena. In order to see what the society was up against the Dewberry AG Society hired engineers to do a second study. The Engineers came back with the recommendation to renovate the facility. This began the initial application for a debenture of $850,000 for restoration costs which the County had given approval. In order to make sure the information they received from the hired firm was correct the Society went to Alberta Infrastructure which put the restoration plan on hold. After days of studies to the building Alberta Infra-

structure recommended a replacement building as the current building is nearing the end of its life span. The debenture and the recommendation from Alberta Infrastructure came at approximately the same time. The decision was made then to put the restoration project on hold, due to the new recommendation. Other options were explored and a plan is now in

Spring of 2015 is the project start goal with a guarantee that the shell of the new arena and ice will be put in before October is a welcome relief for the society as hockey season is near and dear to a lot of community members. “We can’t miss a hockey season in this arena, we may not be completely finished, but we will be useable by October 31st of 2015.”

“The Dewberry AG Society is in the process of trying to build the community” process for a replacement building. The debenture money given from the initial debenture was voluntarily paid back by the Ag Society. The Ag Society is now in the works of applying for a new debenture from The CVR for the new project. The members talked about their progress thus far. Bowman explains the following; Dewberry is a village that is not governed by the County of Vermilion River as it belongs to its own village council, therefore rate payers do not pay County tax , they pay their own (Dewberry) tax. Dewberry Village has committed to $50,000 to the society project which will be recouped with a $40 per year tax lev y. Bowman stated “Dewberry has followed suit and committed $40 per year for tax addition for the said project, and are happily doing so.”

Bowman went on to explain ‘The CVR had some conditions on the debenture such as fundraising of $1.4 million prior to the release of the funds. All liability will come to the Dewberry Ag Society. We m u s t a l s o i n c l u d e a l i s t o f th e grant s that were ap p lie d a n d approved for. We (Ag Society) already have $4 0 0,0 0 0 raised, as we (AG Society) have been actively fundraising for the last 4 years in hopes of being able to get this project off the ground. A lot of (our) fundraising packages have not gone out yet as we wanted to have a solid drawing and idea of where we were going. Bowman said the society was waiting for the debenture to be passed in order to confirm the project. “We will be unveiling our sponsorship packages as soon as the third

reading of the debenture is finalized” Bowman went on to say she felt there was a strong statement the Dewberry Ag Society needed to make which states “There is a lot of false info rmatio n b ein g p asse d aroun d regarding the project and if anyone has any questions they are more than welcome to contac t us (Dewberr y Agricultural Society).” Bowman finished with saying ‘We make quite an economic impact on this (Dewberry) village; everything that we buy is lo cal. We are ver y big on supporting local businesses, so the impact of this building on our community is huge. It is the hub of o u r co m m u n i t y. O l d , yo u n g , a n d in-between meet here to gather and spend time. This place is a very happy place particularly in the winter, not just from this community, but from the entire northwestern area of our county ‘. Two local Organizations Receive Grants

Lindsey Montgomery Reporter On June 30 among the Vermilion Canada Day Celebrations that were taking place, a couple of local organizations were presented with financial assistance in the form of grants. Dr. Richard Starke MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster presented the cheques on behalf of the Honourable Heather Klimchuk, Minister of Alberta Culture. Vermilion and Area Garden Club received a cheque for $20,500 for Town Hall Park Upgrades, which falls under the Community Initiative Program (CIP) grant. Starke said about the grant “This program provides funding to non- profit organizations and societies that are providing various projects in the communities. The $20,500 that the Vermilion and area garden club received is to assist them with some of the beautification that they do within the town.” Accepting the cheque on behalf of Vermilion and Area Garden Club is Donna Moon who is the Chair Person for Communities in Bloom. The Vermilion Ukrainian Cultural Association received a grant in the sum of $7,488 on June 30. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Cultural Association is Laurie Evans. The purpose of the fund is to assist with their Dance Club Festival and costume costs which can be considerable for some dance groups. The funding for this grant is through the Community Initiatives Program (CIP). The Community Initiatives Program (CIP) provides funds to enhance and enrich community initiatives throughout Alberta. “The funding is provided to mostly volunteer run organizations and communities for whom, sometimes the biggest challenge they have is fundraising” said Starke.

South on Range Road 24, off highway 16 between Lloydminster and Kitscoty is a family farm that produces Artisan Cheese using sheep milk. ‘The Cheesiry’ produces Artisan cheese which is aged, ripened and made using traditional craftsmanship. The Cheesiry has been in operation for five summers. Being seasonal producers, milk and cheese is only produced in the summer time. In the winter the cheese is left to age. In 2007 Rhonda Headon, the cheese creator for the Cheesiry, went to Italy to spend her 30th birthday. While spending three months there she came across a farm that was making cheese. Headon asked if she could learn the cheese making process and the farm agreed. Working on farms around Italy not only for a wage but as a willing worker on organic farms (WWOOF), Headon learned the ‘old world’ inspired cheese making process. Headon now creates gourmet cheese

on her family farm using the milk from the 140 East Friesan cross ewes that live on the farm’s pasture. The cheese Headon made in Italy was from sheep’s milk and she had previous experience on a sheep farm as she was an exchange student for one located in New Zealand. “Sheep are easy to handle for me and the girls (referring to her female employees), and we get a lot of exchange students, so two girls can easily move around a sheep as opposed to a big cow” The milking process including clean up usually takes about two hours, and milking is done twice a day, with the cheese being made three times a week. “The exact cheese making process is the same as I used in Italy” said Headon. “We do non-pasteurized (raw milk) cheese as well as pasteurized cheese”. Sheep’s milk has twice the nutritional value of cow’s milk “We had our cheese tested and our Pecorino has 20 percent of your daily calcium needs in a one inch cube. It is very nutritionally dense” Headon states that because the animals are small, the

The Lakeland Rowing Club has been on the water since early May with a large turnout for the Learn To Row Program. The competitive rowers have been working hard training for this season’s races and it has been paying off for them. On Saturday June 28 the Lakeland Rowing Club represented their green and blue colours at the Prairie Championships Regatta at Telford Lake. Are you beginning to plan for some summer fun for your family but are a little strapped for cash this year? Or maybe you are looking for some inexpensive things to do as a family to save some money as you save for a summer holiday? Either way, there are lots of things that you can enjoy doing together this summer that cost very little or no money at all and many of these things can be done whether you live right in town or out in the country. Here are some ideas to get you started and to keep you and your kids busy and happy this summer. Pla n a fa mily c a m p o ut….in th e backyard. If you have a tent, set it up in the backyard and spend the night sleeping outside with your kids. If you don’t have one, ask around. A neighbor or friend will likely have some-

thing that you can borrow. Then tell your kids stories about when you were a kid or if they are up for it, make up some funny ghost stories together. Add a little excitement to a family road trip by renting an audio book from your local library then listen together and discuss the story as a family. Watch for special low-cost events at the local pool but instead of dropping the kids off, go with them. Collect a few board games for rainy days (you can usually find them for next to nothing at garage sales). Commit to spending a weekend “off the elec tronic grid” – no cell phones, video games, or ipods allowed. Challenge your family to be mindful of each other without the electronic distractions. Make some healthy popsicles using frozen fruit juice. Plan an old-fashioned block par t y (or if you live in the country..plan a campfire and invite your neighbours ). Potluck is a great way

to keep costs down and to ensure a real variety of treats. Or consider staging a “concert under the stars” with your musical friends, family, and neighbours as performers. Start a summer blog online as a family and include photos and take turns writing about your summer adventures. Contact the local library and ask about any free family programming over the summer months. Make birdfeeders for your backyard by spreading peanut butter on pinecones and rolling in sunflower seeds. Enjoy birdwatching as a family! Try to schedule at least one sunset and one sunrise to watch as a family over the summer. Check out your local bike and walking trails – the Vermilion Provincial Park has some beautiful trails for your family to discover. Spare Parts Tour Cycles Through Vermilion

Have you ever thought of being an organ donor? For some people this life changing experience has given them a second chance at living. This is what happened to Ron Hahn. Recently on the spare parts tour, a coast to coast bicycle ride in support of organ donation Hahn cycled his way throu gh Vermilio n o n J uly 1 then made his way to Lloydminster. His goal is to give people the facts on organ and tissue donation, dispel myths and to raise awareness on the importance of being an organ donor. Hahn himself knows the true gift of organ donation as his dad donated a kidney to him in 2006 after being diagnosed with Alport’s Syndrome, which affects the kidney’s filtration system. According to Hahn’s website www.sparepartstour.com the vital message he wants to tell everyone loud and clear is that you must talk

to your family about wanting to be an organ donor. You need your family’s consent to donate organs. The website also states that as high as 50 percent of Canadians are unaware of what their loved ones want in regard to organ and tissue donation. You can visit the website to donate to the cause and read Ron’s story. You can also see his Bike route and watch where he will be cycling through next.

This year we have 4 gardens to tour – one is a great example of making the most of a small space, two are big gardens, and the fourth yard is a large garden a short ride out in the country. Communities in Bloom members will be selling them at the Coop Store on July 10th from 2pm until 7 pm and at the Farmers Market on July 15th (10am to 1 pm). A & W Garage Sale Supports MS Sue Chikie Reporter

Maud Crews manager of the Vermilion A & W is stepping up in a big way to support the fight against multiple sclerosis (MS). Her store has been actively participating in the Cruisin’ to End MS Campaign, a nation-wide partnership between A&W and the MS Society of Canada – since it began six years ago. But, this year, the Vermilion A&W is taking its efforts to another level. On July 12 and 13 and again on July 26 and 27 at A & W a garage sale will be held at the local restaurant with all proceeds going to support this year’s Cruisin’ to End MS campaign. If you have anything you would like to donate for the garage sale, items may be dropped off on location or you can call Maud for pick up at 780-853- 2987. Maud stated that they may even hold a third garage sale depending on the amount of items they receive. Cruisin to End MS Day will take place on Thursday, August 21, when $1 from every Teen Burger sold at A&Ws across Canada will be donated to the MS Society to help fund research and provide lifechanging services for people living with MS. Leading up to that date, people can also make donations of $1, $2 or $5 at A&W, which will be added to each restaurant’s overall total for A&W Cruisin’ to End MS. At the Vermilion store, Maud is also holding a raffle in conjunction with the event. Johanna Green and Patty Tweedle from the Lloydminster MS Society were on hand July 3 at the Vermilion A & W

location to help kick-off this year’s event, and to show support for the Vermilion store’s efforts. The MS Society, Lloydminster Chapter serves not only Lloydminster but Vermilion and area as well. The MS Society is there to help anyone with the disease by providing information, support, educational events and other resources for not only them, but their families as well. Green, who is the Lakeland Regional Director stated, “MS is a disease that is often filled with unpredictability and uncertainty for those living with it – the support we offer is designed to ensure that no one has to face it alone, and to help them them achieve the greatest quality of life possible each and every day.” An estimated 100,000 Canadians are living with MS with most diagnosed in young adults, aged 15 to 40. MS is unpredictable and can affect vision, hearing, memory, balance and mobility. Its effects can be physical, emotional and financial. Currently there is no cure but each day, researchers are learning more about what causes MS. Researchers are working to develop new and more effective treatments with their ultimate goal being a cure for MS – the MS Society is a key player in helping to fund that research on an annual basis, through events such as Cruisin’ to End MS Day and the annual MS Walk. Donna DeFord has had MS for 22 years and her son works at the Vermilion A & W. Donations to the MS Society help provide support to people like Donna, and offer hope that one day a cure will be found.

Vermilion A & W contributed $2363 of that amount.

Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted We celebrated AR (Accelerated Reading) in VES on June 26. Our school goal was 16 000 AR points and we reached 16 129 points. Fat Cat and Dave Eremko joined us in our celebration. We congratulate the top readers in our school, Amber Wagner (708 points) in Div. 2 and Korey Hemauer (380 points) in Div. 1. They each received a $100 cash certificate from the Credit Union and a Kobo ereader from VES. We also acknowledged all the work Darlene Gourley has done for us with AR throughout the year. At 9:15, Mrs. Doherty was escorted to the stage by Wyatt and Jacob. While “It’s My Party and I’ll Cry If I Want To” played, Mrs. Doherty “cried” because she had to have her hair colored bright purple and blue by volunteer hairdresser, Orlean Woywitka. Our four male staff members all came forward wearing various wigs and led the students in “Twist and Shout”. At 11:00, with the assistance of Shereen Cameron and Eden Wilm, eight students sprayed colored hair spray on the hair of Mrs. Webb and Ms. Birch. As well, Mrs. Doherty’s finished dye job was revealed to the students. Twelve female staff members came out in wigs and got the students up and dancing to “Let’s Twist Again”. At 11:45, we had a family picnic. Then at 12:45, the kids enjoyed a dance in the gym. Our DJ, Shannon Leonard, did a fabulous job. While the dance was going on, there were also games like tail tag, egg on a spoon, sack races, and more being played on the playground.

On June 27, 48 grade 6 students celebrated the end of VES and the beginning of a new chapter in their lives – junior high. They sang “Anything” for their guests, and accepted certificates presented by homeroom teachers Mrs. Myshaniuk and Mr. Faull, and principal, Mrs. Webb. Congratulations to all the grade 6 students. We will miss them at VES and wish them the best of luck in junior high. Grade 1 students went for a fun swim at the college on the afternoon of June 27. Their teachers broke them up into two groups – boys and girls. Each group got to spend half their time swimming and half their time playing on the nearby playground. We have just a few staff changes for next year. Kristin Ward is leaving the VIBE position and Shawna Craig is taking that over. Mrs. Zaharko will be on maternity leave and Mrs. Kyla Christensen will be taking a grade 1 room. Mrs. McLaughlin will be leaving us in the fall on maternity leave and Ms. Carmen Kjenner will be taking the grade 3 position for a year. We hope everyone has a wonderful summer break. See you on August 28, when regular classes for the 2014-15 school year begin.
