Vermilion Announces Plan For New Co-op Grocery Store Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Vermilion area will see a new Co-op grocery store by the end of 2014. The announcement was made public on Sept. 5 at the Vermilion Co-op grocery store by Eastalta Co-op Chairman of the Board of Directors Dwight Miller. “On behalf of the Board of Directors of Eastalta Co-op, along with management, it is indeed my pleasure to announce that we have forwarded plans for a brand new food store for

Vermilion and a new liquor store for Wainwright,” said Chairman Miller. “It is our hope that we may have shovels into the ground by early 2014 and hopefully have completion by December 2014.” He said the new store will be more efficient, better for employees to work in, environmentally conscious and overall, a pleasant environment for shoppers. Store Manager Gerald Hiebert said the store will be built directly adjacent to the existing building where the parking lot now sits. After the new store is open the current building, which was built in 1981, will be torn down to allow for future parking. Hiebert did say that they will be requiring member’s patience while in the building process but assured that the disruption will be minimal. The 32,114 square foot new facility will have expanded spaces for produce, deli, bakery and a large space for fresh meat. It will also allow more space for additional dry grocery items. Although the project is still in the designing stage and contactors have not been awarded the project, Heibert said the project is estimated to cost $9.3 million and will have a more contemporary, clean look. “We spent a great deal of time looking at these designs and the feasibility and ensuring that member equities would not be put at risk. The existing Wainwright development will be paid off this year so we can offer Vermilion what it deserves with a new food store

The administration department will not be a part of this store but Heibert said they do have plans for that department as well. “ This serves as an indication of Eastalta’s long term commitment to Vermilion and area,” said Board Chair-

man Miller. On hand for the announcement was Eastalta Co-op Board Director Johnny Lypowy of Dewberry, and he said the project was “a lot of years in the works” but felt it was a necessary development for the community. The Wainwright Liquor store will be located between the New Co-op Marketplace and the Convenience Store.

The Board of Directors of your Eastalta Co-op Ltd. has announced their approval to proceed with plans to construct two new retail facilities. The first being a 32,114 sq. ft. Food Store in Vermilion to replace

the existing Food Store and a 4600 sq. ft. Liquor Store in Wainwright – a new retail venture. Pending completion of the tendering process on both of these projects to ensure project costs are within feasibility projections, these projects are expected to begin construction in early 2014.

“The construction of a new Food Store in Vermilion provides a commitment by the Board of Directors’ of your Eastalta Co-op to provide a long term retail food service to residents of Vermilion and surrounding areas,” says General Manager, Gerald Hiebert. “This new store, which will be constructed adjacent to the existing store, will maintain our downtown presence and offer us the opportunity to increase our

grocery offering while increasing square footage that we merchandise our fresh departments within, creating an improved shopping atmosphere.” In addition to providing an improved shopping atmosphere, construction will incorporate many new building enhancements that will improve the environmental footprint of the facility as well as operating cost efficiencies. “The decision to enter into a new venture and construct a Liquor Store in Wainwright was made by the Board of Directors following careful consideration that included the study of a market analysis while also considering the success that other Alberta Co-op’s have had in entering the liquor business,” says General Manager, Gerald Hiebert. “The proposed facility will be constructed on the present Co-op Food Store and C-Store/Gas Bar site in Wainwright and will benefit from traffic generated from these facilities.” Eastalta Co-op Ltd. currently operates Co-op Retail Facilities in the communities of Vermilion (Food, C-Store/Gas Bar, Bulk Petroleum, Cardlock), Wainwright (Food, C-Store/Gas Bar, Cardlock, Home Centre), Mannville (Food), and Dewberry (Food) with a Cardlock previously announced to be in constructed in Provost in 2014.

THE CONSERVATIVE RECORD ON P OST-S ECO N D ARY EDUCATION MAKES THE GRADE

As we progress into September, the students of Vegreville-Wainwright and across the country are returning to school. For those continuing their education at a post-secondary institution, the new school year will undoubtedly present new challenges and opportunities that will shape the choices made both now and upon future entry into the workforce. Our Conservative Government understands the importance of pursuing postsecondary education in an ever-changing global marketplace. Investing in post-secondary education is investing in a skilled, competitive work-force. With a growing awareness of the benefits postsecondary education can provide, it only makes sense to make necessary and prudent investments. BUDGET 2013 TAX RELIEF In 2012, students and their families took advantage of more than $11 billion in assistance through tax credits, benefits and other tax relief measures. Several programs offer tax relief to students who enroll in postsecondary education. For example: Students can claim tuition fees paid to a university, college, or other educational

institution in Canada for courses taken at the post-secondary level. Tuition fees paid for courses certified by Employment and Social Development Canada to develop or improve skills in an occupation also qualify; Students can claim an education amount of $400 for each whole or part month in the year in which they are enrolled full-time in a qualifying educational program, or $120 per month for part-time enrolment in a specified educational program, at a designated educational institution; Students can claim a textbook amount of $65 for each month where they qualify for the full-time education amount or $20 for each part-time month; Students may be eligible for the goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax (GST/HST) credit – a tax-free quarterly payment that helps individuals and families with low or modest incomes offset all or part of the GST or HST that they pay; Students may also claim a deduction for their moving expenses if they moved to study as a full-time student enrolled in a post-secondary program at a university, a college, or another educational institution; and Students may also be able to claim amounts for interest paid on their student loans and may also be eligible to claim the public transit tax credit for the cost of a pass for travel within Canada on public transit. A RECORD OF COMMITMENT AND ACCOMPLISHMENT Providing young Canadians with the information and opportunities to make smart education and employment choices is essential in securing Canada’s long-term economic prosperity. The above measures,

contained within Budget 2013, only compliment the work we have done for students since first taking office in 2006. In the longterm, our Conservative Government has: Expanded eligibility for Canada Student Loans through a reduction in the expected parental contribution; Increased the Canada Social Transfer by $800 million per year starting in 2008-2009, to strengthen the quality and competitiveness of Canada’s post-secondary education system; Invested over $330 million per year through the Youth Employment Strategy to help young Canadians get the skills and work experience they need to transition to the workplace; Invested $123 million to streamline and modernize the Canada Student Loans Program; Allowed full-time students to earn more money by doubling the in-study income exemption, benefiting approximately 100,000 students each year; Allowed part-time students to have higher family incomes without affecting their eligibility for Canada Student Loans; Provided fairness for part-time students by increasing the income eligibility threshold for Canada Student Grants, aligning it with the threshold for full-time students; Reduced the in-study interest rate for part-time students to zero, saving them approximately $5.6 million per year; Provided the greatest number of scholarships ever granted to our graduate students through the Canada Graduate Scholarships program. These prestigious awards are worth $50,000 annually for doctoral students, for up to three years; and Reduced the costs of higher education for families through Canada Student Grants –

money that does not need to be paid back. These grants provide: students from Low-Income Families $250 per month; students from Middle-Income Families $100 per month; students with Permanent Disabilities $2,000 per loan year; students with Dependents - $200 per month, per child; part-Time Students with Dependents – up to $1,920 per loan year; grant for Part-Time Studies – up to $1,200 per loan year; Services and Equipment for Students with Permanent Disabilities – up to $8,000 per academic year (August 1 to July 31) for each year of studies after high school (including undergraduate and graduate levels), provided you continue to meet the eligibility criteria. As a Government, we will continue to support measures that help reduce the cost of every-day living, and will always stand behind our students as we strive to make Canada more competitive and prosperous. This fall, I would encourage all students to save their receipts and to take advantage of the grants and tax relief available to them. I would also call on all Vegreville-Wainwright constituents to spread the word about the assistance available to students. It is vital to make every dollar count as you make the most out of your education. Thank you for the opportunity to provide an update on an issue of importance in both the short- and long-term. I have worked at a few places since but none have been in the Vermilion area so I have to say, it is nice to be back in the area. I took a position at a small news paper last August as a Reporter and was not sure where it was going to take me. After a few short weeks, I started to nicely fit into my new role and truly enjoyed covering the various news events and writing stories about the many interesting people I was fortunate to meet. I was offered a position with the Voice and felt the need to return to the community that had so warmly welcomed me many years previous. So it was with excitement I jumped in my Jeep last Tuesday and headed for Vermilion and my new position as The Voice Reporter. Lets take a minute to compare 2 lb foam to batted insulation. First of all the R-value of spray foam is about R-5-7 per inch, thus a wall with 3 ½” of foam has an R-value of approximately R-17.5 – R-24.5. Batted insulation in the same 2x6 wall will be between R-20 and R-22. The cost of the foam is roughly 2-3 times more money to install. Here is where most people stop researching the bennifits and make a decision based only on the R-value and price. As Paul Harvey used to say, “and now the rest of the story”. While R-value is important it is not the only consideration. If you research how heat energy moves you will find there are three primary means of heat transfer, Convection (through air movement), Conduction (through contact), and Radiation (energy waves). When you consider all the ways heat is gained or lost in a wall you will quickly see the spray foam advantage. When R-value alone is considered, there is very little advantage to spray foam. When you begin to look at the resistance to convection, conduction and radiation of foam and batted insulation you will quickly see how well foam preforms overall verses the conventional insulation methods of batted insulation. The primary advantage of foam is how it expands into the crevices and seals the wall cavity. Even the most careful insulator and vapor barrier installer cannot come close to sealing the wall cavity as fully as spray foam does. Another advantage of spray foam is that it add some rigidity and structure to the wall. Finally if spray foam is installed properly it will act as a vapor barrier thus eliminating the time consuming process of applying 6mm poly and tuck tape. All this adds up to one thing, when you are considering a type of insulation you should look at the cost benefits of spray foam. WWW.BORDERHI.COM/POSTS

Break and Enter to Business Mannville On September 7th, 2013, Vermilion RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter to the UFA store in Mannville, Alberta. The break and enter

occurred at approximately 2:00 am at which time two males arrived in a larger dark colored Crew Cab pick up truck believed to be a Ford F-250 or F-350 with a rounded slip tank in the cargo box. The vehicle was also fitted with a bush bar on the front and what is believed to be a safety flag in the cargo area. The males are believed to be Caucasian and were both wearing ball caps and dark colored clothes. Nothing was taken however, the suspects damaged the front door of the business. Anyone with information on this crime is asked to contact Vermilion RCMP

Though they were conducted many years ago now, I can so very well remember the consternation it caused when this whole deal was laid out. Every last single head of cattle had to be tested, which entailed the injecting of a small amount of the bacteria into the area right under the animals tail, a tender spot to be sure. It left the administrator of said needle in a rather precarious and vulnerable position. At the time of year the test was conducted the green grass made cows rather loose and you could be in the way of a shot of liquid grass. Also hooves could fly as I remember in those times, head gates were virtually nonexistent and there really wasnâ€™t any other way you could do the test without one. The government sent letters that stated there were consequences for not complying to the order, but they did

send plans of how to build chutes and head gates, big deal!! The whole thing was just too heavy duty to take in all at once. All at once we all had to change the whole idea of handling cattle, a decided change from the lariat and snubbing post method. How well I remember those days of laying out and planning handling corrals and squeeze chutes and head gates. There sure were lots of things to do to try and make the whole program workable. I think almost every place had a different better idea of how to get the head gate secured and how to channel the poor frightened cows into the chutes and their head in the gate. It was a real learning experience. The way our community worked, we had neighbours helping neighbours so the manpower part was secure, but by the time we all had done, the cattle had to be run through the mill twice, you understand. The first time was to administer the test, and the second time to check for a reaction to see if T.B. was present in the animal. You old cowboys

remember if you rounded up cattle, you needed to be out where the cattle lived at sun up so you would find them in the open and not in the bush. It just the way it was and is!! Can you imagine getting up in the wee hours and then getting cattle in and struggling with them more or less all day, seemingly all day every dayall summer, it seemed. The first time through was such a struggle itâ€™s hard to even think on it. The stock werenâ€™t at all willing to co-operate. That was the first time!! The second time was worse by 10â€™s if that were possible. We had cows literally go berserk with panic and one even died, I believe of fright. We were lucky enough not to have had any reactors to the test, but the whole idea was to make sure and help to rid the country of the T.B. scourge. Our cattle were spooked for years just getting them anywhere near a corral. It had a lasting effect on the whole raising, handling, procedure!! Thank goodness for that because it seemed the dust had hardly settled when

the whole shebang started with the testing for bangs brucellosis disease. Weâ€™d been having our heifer calves done in the late fall after weaning and now it seemed the cattle had to have a sample of their blood taken as I remember and we found to our sorrow that heifers vaccinated a little too old would end up as suspicious, and we had to run our cow herd through I forget how many times and we had to clean all our corrals and barns and white wash the whole thing with â€œCarbolaâ€? spray. Man what an ordeal. It was almost enough for a man to want to quit cattle altogether. What I remember in retrospect though, was the way the neighbors all worked together, as we really did in those days, and how the whole community was closer and more supporting of one another. It was really great, those early morning rides and the teamwork involved in getting the job done. Part of our Alberta heritage and the spirit of country Iâ€™m so proud of.

The Long Fence Margaret Lonsdale Columnist

Three ravens have taken over from where the robins used to gather in the early mornings. Sometimes they’re present at dusk, too. They might be silent, waiting for the right moment so that they can launch into their graceful, acrobatic flight just before we pass before them in our clumsy stroll. Or they might take no note of us, so immersed are they in noisily bickering between themselves, hopping toward each other menacingly, wings spread wide, beaks open and krakking their throaty raven rant. We see a variety of shapes in silhouette along and atop the long fence. Depending upon the time of day and the way the light illuminates it, the fence appears dramatically ominous or utilitarian and bland. It acts as a barrier to warn us away or as a shelter from the northern winds. The long fence borders the trail where the Yellow Dog and I frequently wander. She sniffs the foliage that grows adjacent to it as though she’s never smelled anything like it while I think and hum and look for something I haven’t noticed on any of the five thousand seven hundred eighty-seven walks we’ve taken there previously. Most often we meet only creatures along the way, not so many people. Once we were surprised by a young man who appeared suddenly from the other side of the fence, from the

Forbidden Side that is protected by the No Trespassing signs. “Shortcut from work,” he explained after I convinced the dog not to redesign his left leg. She is not fond of surprises. I decided that the combination of his youth and the type of work he was engaged in must have contributed to his being in the kind of condition that supported leaping fences effortlessly. The long fence is long, but it’s also really high. As the young worker made his way toward home and we continued on our walk, I contemplated the potential value of renewing my long expired gym membership. It’s been a few years since she’s made more than a faker’s effort, but there was a day when the old Yellow girl would run the length of the fence with the grace of a panther in pursuit of a rascal rabbit, returning with long tongue and proud gait. Not that she ever caught one, even during the years of her greatest speed. Like many dog endeavours, for her it’s always been the chase of the rabbit that holds the allure, not the catching. She’s more the begging for human snacks type of dawg than the hunt and destroy kind of beast. She led me once to a wounded baby rabbit. It lay in the grass not so far from the long fence, perhaps abandoned by its mother or just lost. The dog stood sniffing gently at the small creature until I drew closer to investigate what it was that so piqued her interest. We took the shivering baby home with us, probably in doing so risking infection by evil wild rabbit

disease. It seemed the right decision at the time, although our good intentions undoubtedly exceeded our skill at healing wounded wild animals. This summer, I was bemused one early evening when we found two young boys sitting on the fence gazing up at the clouds. They’d propp ed their bicycles against the barrier, then climbed from the bike seats onto their perch. “Did you fly up there?” I asked. They wrinkled their freckled little noses and laughed the way that kids do when adults pose silly questions that don’t warrant answering. They seemed very pleased, sitting there looking at the world from their elevated, slightly dangerous vantage point. I wondered what the ravens would think if they came upon the two usurpers. Someone added a bit of not particularly artful graffiti to the long fence recently. From a distance, the thick, unsteady lines vaguely resemble that of a lumpy ghost. The Yellow Dog forgets sometimes that we’ve already seen the ghost and it so far has posed no real threat. Every time being the first time, she approaches the shape with a wa r y c a u tio n, a l ow g rowl gurgling in her throat as if to warn the white paint drips against trying any foolish fence ghost tricks. She lunges at it and barks her mean dog bark a few times. Then the moment passes. She’s made her point and the thing, as expected, has backed down. The long fence keeps us away from the stuff that goes on behind it. It’s a separator that someone must have

deemed necessary to keep two very different neighbours apart. Residential people and Industrial people need to mind their own territory, I suppose. We hear sounds coming from over there while we walk. Sounds of industry on the grind, whining machinery, construction, deconstruction, and demolition. As the fence wood has settled, gaps have opened up so that we can peer into that other world. We keep our visual trespasses brief. We know the meaning of No Trespassing and we understand the smaller lettering that sets out what might happen to people who don’t heed the red letter warnings. Probably they will melt. Not much over there in Otherland interests us enough to leap over the long fence or to burrow under it for a closer look. The railcars hold some intrigue but the rest just looks sad and broken. Discarded rusted rubble parts from machinery that’s come to the end of its use. Bits of metal and dirty tires no longer attached to rims. Snarls of wire and jagged pipe dangling out from heaps of dirt. Here and there a bilge of what we might loosely refer to as water. A barren landscape without even a speck of green grass or a tree anywhere in any direction. Stripped. Devoid of Life. Ghostly. Sometimes we wish our neighbour took a little more pride in the surroundings for which it bears responsibility. Most days, though, while walking the familiar trail, we whisper to the wind and to the sky, “Long live the long fence.”

Library Board New Member

The Vermilion Public Library Board will see a new face join the Board of Directors. With the long standing seat vacancy with the board, the library board recommended that Vermilion Town Council members consider filling it with Vermilion resident, Julie Walker. Walker has worked as the Northern Lights Library System’s Bibliographic Services Consultant since November of 2011 out of its Elk Point office. The recommendation was addressed at the Town of Vermilion Council meeting on Sept. 3 and a motion was made to appoint Walker to the position. Local News Dance Impressions starts off with Buddy Night

Dance Impressions by Ryan started their 2013 season off with sessions of bring your buddy to class. Registered dancers were encouraged to try the different dance disciplines and were permitted to bring a friend to dance class. Instructor Ryan Wilson said she hopes there will be more interest in dance as a result of the extra exposure to potential students. The Junior One dance class are put through the paces on Sept. 3 at the Dance Impressions studio in Vermilion. Mr. Allan Chase, principal of St. Jerome’s would like to welcome all staff and students back for a new school year. We would especially like to welcome all our new students and their families, Father Roger, our new priest and four new staff members, Mrs. Kim Zacharias, Mrs. Sarah Dewing, Mrs. Crystal Sheppard, and Mrs. Sharon Hiebert. We are excited about our new year and all the new people joining us. On Friday, September 6 a very special guest visited a students of St. Jerome’s. Former graduate, Sister Gloria Butler, shared with each division of students her experience of living in Peru and the work she does there. Sister Gloria is a member of the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Evron. She works in the villages of El Valle and La Vizcachera, which are located beyond the city boundary of Lima in the high hills of Peru. The Sisters of Charity are very involved in the villages, the schools, and the parishes, offering a variety of programs for these communities. St. Jerome’s School has chosen to support the work of the Sisters by raising money throughout the year. Sister Gloria is not the only former student of St. Jerome’s who works in Peru with the Sisters of Charity so is Sister Ellen O’Neill. The St. Jerome’s Parent Council is presenting: “Stage Fright – The THRILLusion Show! The performance is on October 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Alumni Theatre Lakeland College. Tickets are available to purchase at the school.

We would like to invite everyone out to our Annual St. Jerome’s Fall Supper. This year’s supper will be held at the Vermilion Regional Centre on Thursday, September 26th. Once again there will be two settings, 5:00 pm or 6:30 pm. Tickets will be available at the school office beginning Thursday, September 12th. The Sr. High Student Council will also be hosting a “Show and Shine” in the parking lot of the Regional Centre the evening of the Fall Supper. Fall supper ticket purchasers will have the chance to vote on their favorite vehicle and student council will award the winner with a “Car Care Basket”. Polish up your vehicle and display it that evening. High School students will be given the opportunity to display their cars at the school as well during the day on September 26th. The “Most Popular” vehicle chosen by the high school students will win a $25 Co-op Gas Card. Our Elementary Hot Lunch Program will be starting up again beginning Tuesday, September 24th. This year all classes kindergarten to grade five will be able to purchase hot lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We also have the lunchroom providing lunches for students grade 6-12 and staff everyday of the week. We are always looking for volunteers for this program and would appreciate any and all help. Please contact the school office if you are interested. If you are able to donate to “Our Food for the Hungry” program it would be much appreciated. Everyday we have children who forget or do not have a lunch. Items such as Cup of Soup, Granola Bars, puddings, cheese & crackers, fruit cups or any other snacks that are not perishable

The Sr. Girls were in Marwayne, and the Jr. Boys and Girls played in Lloydminster. This weekend coming up our Sr. Boys will be traveling to Camrose, and the Sr. Girls will participate in Mega Volley hosted by J.R. Robson. We wish all of our teams a great start to the season. The St. Jerome’s Spartans Jr. High Golf Team traveled to Provost on Thursday, September 5th to participate in the ECACS tournament. The team represented St. Jerome’s with great spirit and terrific play. Congratulations to Caylyn Cooper, Tenille Chase, Jared Hache, Kale Lawrence, Hayden Protsch, Jesse Rogan, Austin Patry, Chevan MacKenzie, and Carson Rogers. On Wednesday, August 28th, the staff of St. Jerome’s traveled to Wainwright to spend the day with other teachers from the East Central Alberta Catholic School Divison. We began the day celebrating mass together at Blessed Sacrament Church. The rest of the day was spent at Blessed Sacrament School with guest speaker, Father Carey. Father Carey instructed us on the meaning of “Shalom” and how we can create “Shalom” with God, our neighbour, our environment and ourself. Father Carey shared many wonderful experiences and much insight into our roles as Catholic/Christian Educators. It was a wonderful way to focus for the beginning of the school year. Vermilion Elementary School Karen King Submitted VES would like to give a special thank you to East-Alta Coop for their generous donation of a $500 gift card going toward our Breakfast Program. If any families or businesses wish to provide any assistance to our program, we welcome all donations of time and any other gracious offerings. Should you have any questions, please call the school at 780-853-5444. This year, VES has a Cross-Country Running Club for students in grades 4-6. It is a very short season (Sept. 2-Oct. 1) as it only runs for the month of September, but it is very busy with activities. Practices are from 3:40-4:40 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students will have the opportunity to go to the meets at Riverdale MiniPark (Sept. 18), the Vermilion Provincial Park (TBA), Bud Miller Park (Sept. 30), and possibly one other out of town event. For more information, please contact Mrs. McCullough, Mrs. Webb, or Mrs. Zaharko at the school. Mrs. Stachniak is very excited to be offering after school volleyball on Mondays from 3:40-4:30 for students in grades 4-6. The volleyball program will be filled with skill building drills and lots of fun. The program will run for 5 weeks, beginning on Sept. 9 and ending on Oct. 7. VES has a super group of returning school patrollers in grade 5 and a new one in grade 6. We are currently able to patrol our main crosswalk southeast of the school each morning and afternoon. If numbers allow, we will also patrol one of our other crosswalks as often as possible. We are very proud of those students who

have committed to getting here a bit early and/or staying a little late to help their schoolmates get to school and get home safely. Just a reminder to drivers: Patrollers first point at each other with an empty hand to indicate that they are checking for traffic. Once traffic has stopped, they will hold out their signs. Then pedestrians will cross. Please stop when you see the hand; don’t wait for the sign. We thank Mr. Faull and Mr. Haslehurst for supervising the patrollers. Intramural activities are a fun and exciting way to learn new games and skills, as well as play with students from different grades and age levels. We offer a variety of activities throughout the year as listed below: Sept./Oct. are Canley and Mini-Canley, Nov. is Speed Stacking, Dec./ Jan. are Cross-Country Skiing, Feb./Mar. is Floor Curling, April is Skipping, May is Lego Activities, and June is Soccer. VES will be focusing on character and citizenship education this year. Each month we will study a new virtue. All staff will be promoting, modeling, teaching, and celebrating certain virtues each month. During the month of September, we will be focusing on Kindness. Kindness is showing you care, doing some good to make life better for others, showing love and compassion to someone who is sad or needs your help, treating yourself and others gently, and caring about the earth and all living things. At 5:00 on Sept. 12, at our VES Open House, VIBE will host a kindergarten welcome for all families and students attending kindergarten this year. Please come out and join us and meet other kindergarten families.

Local News Walk for Ovarian Cancer

The 2013 Walk of Hope for Ovarian Cancer Canada got underway on Sept. 8 at the Vermilion Provincial Park after family members of Lyla Fee cut the ribbon, marking the start of the walk. Fee has been suffering from Ovarian Cancer for ten years and was unable to attend this year’s event. Cutting the ribbon this year were Fee’s grandchildren Julia and Elijah Belanger along with Fee’s daughter, Danette. This year’s walk totalled more than 135 participants, who each had the option of either a two and a half or five kilometer walk. This year’s top fundraisers were Cindy Usenik, Angie Young, Connie Smith and Lottie Bardoel. The final tally has not yet be completed but based on the early estimates, organizers predict that it will be over that of last year’s total of $20,000. Photo Karen Nedzielski.

Renaye Wade is an 18 year old young lady from Mundare who enjoyed dancing, her family dogs and working at her part time job until a tragic accident halted all of it. After graduating from Vegreville Composite High School in 2012, Wade was completing some upgrading before applying to the Grant MacEwan University Law program with hopes of becoming a

lawyer. All of Wade’s aspirations have been put on hold after suffering a brain injury resulting from an automobile accident in Edmonton in March of this year. On March 15 Wade, along with another young lady, were travelling to visit friends attending college in Fairview, Alberta when their vehicle starting experiencing mechanical trouble. The vehicle stalled on the Yellowhead Highway near the 170 street exit and was rear-ended by another vehicle which sent the car into the path of a west bound semi. The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital where it was determined she suffered a concussion and would be admitted for observation overnight. The passenger side where the majority of the impact was, left Wade trapped in the vehicle for an hour and a half while Fire and Rescue extracted her from the wreckage. The next few hours proved tense for her family and friends as they gathered in a waiting room of the Royal Alexandra Hospital. As the days passed Wade’s younger brother Adam, decided to create a “Wear Yellow Day” to show support for her recovery. Wade’s family said yellow had always been her favourite colour so the choice to use yellow was an easy one. Through the use of social media, wordof-mouth and local television stations, the first Wear Yellow Day took place two weeks after the accident while Wade was still in a coma. It seemed to be a success so the organizers decided to hold a second at the thirty-day mark. After a month in a coma Wade slowly began her recovery process, first learning a form of sign language to help communicate with nursing staff, doctors and

Local News Council Makes Motion To Lower Deposit In New Development Karen Nedzielski Reporter

At the Sept. 3 Town council meeting, Vermilion Council members made the motion to drop the required deposit from 20 per cent to 10 on the lots in the new undeveloped commercial subdivision along Highway 41 just south of Tim Hortons. Town Manager Dion Pollard said

there has been some interest in the new proposed subdivision and that in most other centres the standard deposit on the undeveloped properties is usually 10 per cent. “A 20 per cent deposit sometimes is a lot to ask for undeveloped lots that may take up to a year for the town to have ready for purchasers,” said Pollard. Vermilion Folk Club Season Starts With Souljah Fyah Karen Nedzielski Reporter

The Vermilion Folk Club is starting off its season with a bit of a Reggae flavour. The club will be hosting the Edmonton based group Souljah Fyah at the Vermilion Legion Hall on Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. The group is known for their album “I Wish” which was the 2011 winner of the “Urban Recording Of the Year” for the Western Canadian Music Awards. The group was also the first Alberta band to receive a JUNO nomination in 2009 and their single “Abundance of Good” topped the charts in many of

the radio station’s hit lists. The group consists of Janaya “Sista J” Ellis as Lead Vocalist, Paul “2-Tall” Joose on Bass and Keyboard, Dorant “ Saint ” Ricketts on Drums, Norm “Stormin’ Norm” Frizzell on Keyboard and Bongbiemi “The Original Tribesman” Nfor on percussion. Souljah Fyah has a long list of nominations and awards and you can be cer tain concer t attendees will be treated to an entertaining presentation of their style of music when they make the visit to Vermilion. Tough First Loss On Scoreboard And In Injuries For Marauders Cathy Wolters Columnist

After a 32 point margin of victory Westlock coach Jon Kramer told the Marauder team “We were lucky to play you in week one.” The Vermilion Marauders fielded a team with 14 rookies and only 10 of 13 veterans dressed for the opening game of their 2013 Wheatland Football League season. Head coach Ben Christians told his team that he was proud of each team member with many of them playing both ways and several playing hurt. Three of the Marauder vets left the game for the hospital for a variety of injuries during the game dropping their experienced players to only seven bodies. “You left everything on the field,” was assistant coach Lorne Maier’s assessment. All the coaches added the team should keep their heads high even though the scoreboard was 60-28 against them. Westlock scored on both their first and

second possessions of the game followed by two early second quarter touchdowns to go up 30-0. Each TD was followed by a two point conversion attempt as the Thunderbirds only booted the ball on kickoffs and didn’t attempt either single point conversions or punts. On the other hand, the Marauders are rich in leg talent. Donovan Yaceyko continued to handle kickoffs. One of those bounded into the end zone for a single point. This followed the first Vermilion score of the afternoon midway in the second quarter. Quarterback Corey Rowe followed blockers for a 65-yard touchdown. Rookie Damian King’s convert was blocked. Westlock scrimmaged from their own 20 after conceding a point on the kickoff. The touchdown ignited the Marauders with Avery Biechlech finding his way into the backfield to stop Westlock for no gain. On the next play, the Marauders forced a fumble and took over on the T-Bird 18. Rookie back Brayden Chillibeck carried to inside the five and Rowe followed the path of his blockers for his second score. King converted and the Marauders had 14 points. Westlock countered with a touchdown on their next possession. It was a tough TD for the Marauders who appeared to have the Thunderbirds stopped six yards short of a first down, but an offside penalty kept the drive alive. Vermilion fans got to their feet as Rowe returned the ensuing kickoff for a 75-yard touchdown. King’s convert put the Marauders within 15 with only 1:38 left in the half. However, Snell slipped through Marauder penetration into the backfield and took a long cross country run to the end zone. The conversion was good to run their total to 44. Fans were excited as Rowe again fielded the kickoff finding a lot of daylight before being taken down at the Westlock 37. The offense went to the shotgun formation, but the clock ran down before they could

reach the end zone When asked if he was out of gas on his second big kickoff return in the dying minutes, Rowe replied, “I couldn’t feel my legs.” Rowe, named the coaches’ first star, was described by coach Maier as “playing as hard as I’ve ever seen a Marauder play”. The teams exchanged turnovers on downs to start the second half. Westlock scored first at 4:14 of third quarter running the score to 52-21. The Marauders lost veteran lineman Blaine Armstrong on this drive. But the Marauders didn’t quit. From second and 12 on the Westlock 19, Rowe fought his way upfield, flicked a lateral to Chillibeck who scored his first ever touchdown. The King convert gave Vermilion 28 points. The Thunderbirds scored for a final time by faking going up the middle before Snell emerged with the ball and a wide open field ahead of him. He did a bit of showboating by loping parallel to the goal line across most of the field before stepping into the end zone. A 2-point convert ran the score to 60-28. At the start of the fourth quarter, Rowe had to be helped from the field after a bootleg gain of two yards. Jayden Keichinger took over as QB. After a high snap, the Marauders turned the ball over on down on their own 25. Even though the game was nearly over, the Marauder defense dug in and stopped the Thunderbirds with only a five year gain and regained possession on an unsuccessful third down conversion. However, Yaceyko went down and had to be helped from the field with a possible concussion. From his own 20, Colton Katuski found room down the sidelines before being tackled near the Westlock 10. An unsportsmanlike penalty called against the bench moved the home team back 10 yards and

they turned the ball over on downs. Westlock thought they’d scored again, but the 95-yard pass and run play was called back on an illegal block. A running play and knee later, the game was over. Next week the Marauders play their nemesis Athabasca Pacers who rolled up an impressive 56 point shutout victory over Vegreville in their opening game. Marauder extra points: Veteran twoway player Dustin Steene left for the emergency room early in the game…Marauder stars went to Rowe, and veteran defensive go-to guys Keichinger and Bielech. Both provided on-field leadership playing both ways and on special teams. Final star went to “Who me? My chin strap done up” Katuski who had his helmet knocked off twice…The captain’s star went to Chillibeck who was solid in his debut at running back. He took the place of last year’s league leader in yards and points Fraser Lumley who is on the injured list.

The Voice Brings On New Reporter Vermilion Voice Release

Over the past few months there have been a couple of changes to the Voice’s staffing. Former Editor Trudy McKenzie has taken some time off to help her daughter who is expecting twins very shortly. Trudy felt it was necessary to be by her daughter’s side when that day comes to help with extra tasks related to being a new parent with newborn twins. Former Reporter Shannon O’Connor, along with her son recently made the decision to return to Ontario. Shannon’s son has some medical conditions that she felt could be better dealt with there, with the help of her extended family members. We wish both former staff members

all the best with their future endeavours and would hope they check in from time to time. The Voice is pleased to have Karen Nedzielski as the new Voice Reporter. With the position recently left vacant, Karen has transitioned into the new position quite nicely. We are excited to bring her on board and welcome her to the Voice and back to the Vermilion area. We are sure she will blend into our working family and look forward to all that she will bring to our newspaper. The Vermilion and District Chamber of Commerce is once again holding its annual Business Blowout Sale on Sept. 26 at the Vermilion Elks Hall from noon to 8 p.m. Formerly known as the Giant Business Garage Sale, Chamber Office manager Anna Giesbrecht said this will be the fourth year for shoppers to get some really great

deals and merchants to blow out old stock items. “Last year’s event was a sell out,” said Giesbrecht referring to the merchant spots sold.
