A Tale Of Two Fairs - Innisfree Shannon O’Connor Reporter

The Innisfree and District Agricultural Society could not have picked a better day to have their 33rd Annual Fair. On August 14, the sun shone brightly down on all of the outdoor activities that took place that day. The Fair opened with an early pancake breakfast (7:00 a.m.) and the parade got underway at 10:00 a.m. Deputy Mayor Deb McMann (a.k.a Parade Mascot Penny Buzks) said. “We don’t pre-register; whoever shows up on the day is in the parade.” This approach is working, as there were about 45 entrants. A good crowd gathered throughout the village to “parade watch” with the heaviest concentration of people gathered on 50th Street. The RCMP led the way while floats from neighbouring villages and towns like Mannville, Ranfurly, Vegreville and

Minburn made an appearance. MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster, Minister of Tourism and Recreation Richard Starke and his wife Alison also participated and drove the route in a convertible. Several parade walkers that added a wonderful splash of colour to the parade donned traditional Ukranian costumes. More family activities took place after the parade at Rec Park. In tandem with a Horse Show, a bounce house, zorb balls (hamster balls for humans), bounce slide, bungee run, dunk tank and face painting, (face-painting donations were collected for the Kids With Cancer Foundation). President of the Ag Society Carmen Nott, said they were throwing a good old-fashioned country fair and that none of it would be possible without the help volunteers. Town councilors and Deputy Mayor Deb McMann volunteered to be dunked in the tank. The Rec Centre opened at 1:0 0 p. m . a n d th e re was a good bench showing at this year’s fair with 39 classes in the amateur photogra p hy c ate g o r y alone. The usual favourites were all there, baking, canning, sewing, quilting and veget a b l e s to n a m e just a few. A Fair favourite, the Soap Box Derby, got underway at 4 p.m. and had participants sailing down the hill just south of the fire department. Cocktails and supper at the Rec Centre followed the derby and the night ended with Ben Crane and special guest Jessica Crane in concert whose show has been described as having a “distinct agricultural odour!” with its blend of western music and lighthearted entertainment. In this tale of Two Fairs, the 33rd Annual Innisfree Ag Fair was “The Best of Times.”

Two Hills RCMP Detachment were kept busy this weekend responding to 23 calls for service. RCMP members responded to 4 break and enters in the County of Two Hills. Entry was gained in several places with the use of what is believed to be a pry bar. Several items were taken in each instance. RCMP Members were called to assist the Two Hills Fire Department with a dumpster fire behind the Two Hills Liquor Store. It is believed that expended fireworks garbage was the culprit and has been deemed non-suspicious. Two Hills RCM P also responded to several 911 hang-ups, commercial alarms, and traffic related incidents. Several calls related to the illegal possession or consumption of liquor in

public places were attended. During pro-active patrols RCMP members conducted highway patrol and patrols of several towns and villages in the Lamont County/Hills area. In one instance RCMP members came across an assault that had just occurred. Two Hills RCMP would like to remind residents and business owners to ensure that their buildings are locked and windows are closed to deter wouldbe thieves. It is also recommended that you leave adequate lighting on in the exterior and interior of your buildings. Vandalism To Vehicles At Two Hills Hospital On August 16th, 2013, Two Hills RCMP responded to a complaint of vandalism at the community hospital in Two Hills, AB. The victim, an employee at the hospital, went to her vehicle at 7:00am following a night shift, only to discover that her driver’s side window had been smashed out. There have been several acts of vandalism to staff vehicles at the Two Hills hospital recently, including multiple cars being keyed in a previous incident. It is not known at this time if the incidents are related. Staff are being urged to remain as vigilant as possible. Two Hills RCMP asking for the public’s assistance in identifying person(s) responsible for the mischief. The public are also encouraged to call immediately regarding any suspicious activity, especially in the overnight or early morning hours. A Passion For Paper Shannon O’Connor Columnist

The recent a n n o u n ce m e n t by Sun Media that it is shifting its focus from print to digital to attract a younger audience has resulted in the loss of 360 jobs and the closure of 11 papers across Canada. These recent cuts are in addition to 500 job cuts last November. It is a lose, lose, lose, lose situation. Obviously, the biggest loss is people’s livelihoods. Conversely, the people who remain will also lose, as they will need to pick up the extra work because shifting to digital does not magically mean there is less work to do. Director of the Communications Workers of America and Canada, Martin O’Hanlon said in an online interview with the Canadian Press, “The staffing levels are so low that people right now have a hard time going on holiday and coping with the work is almost impossible.” The readers will lose because some

of the papers that will close down are in smaller communities and without a local paper; there will be no one to report the news that matters to them. In addition, the readers will also lose out due to digital news formatting because computer screens do not engage our senses the way paper does. A newspaper is tactile. When you pick one up the sense of touch elicits an emotional attachment. Touch is associated with nurturing. Children and animals that are deprived of their mother’s touch will fall ill and possibly even die. This tactile stimulation is primal and something as seemingly mundane as picking up a warm newspaper can stimulate a sense of well being. A newspaper also appeals to our sight and according to some research, glancing through the printed pages encourages creativity through free association. This is less likely to happen on a computer screen since you are specifically searching out information in a linear fashion. The sound of newspaper pages turning is also a great source of comfort to

people. It is so comforting you can find videos on YouTube where you can watch and hear people just turning newspaper pages. Perhaps the most important sense that newspapers appeal to is our sense of smell. This is the sense that is most closely related to memory and the smell of newspaper pages may subconsciously or consciously rekindle the past. Some people are so passionate about the smell of paper they purchase it in fragrance form. Designer Karl Lagerfeld, a self- confessed paper nut, named the fragrance “Paper Passion.” On a more personal level, I think I can safely say without offending my sister that she too is a paper nut. Her weekend newspaper ritual includes a Saturday walk to the corner store to purchase The Saturday Star (that she will not read until Sunday). Everyone in the house knows not to touch said paper and on Sunday, she methodically begins removing the sections of the paper in the order she will read them. To the side she places

the sections she will not read, (Wheels and Sports). She thumbs through all the sections of the paper backwards and forwards and when she has had her fill of news, she begins the crossword puzzle. It is a ritual that is annoying as heck to watch, but is a real labour of love that allows her to spend leisure time with words on the printed page. Sun media is not the first chain of newspapers to shift their focus from print to digital and they will not be the last but it makes me wonder about the audience this shift is targeted toward. What will happen to these youths who may never know the power of communicating through the senses? Will they be less creative? Will they be out of touch (literally and figuratively)? Will they be hurried and impatient? The great guru of communication Marshall McLuhan famously stated, “The medium is the message.” Based on his theory I am afraid the message does not bode well for these youths as it is devoid of passion.

Strange weather we had for the end of July, as chilly as I can ever remember it - must just be an equalizer spurt for all the nice weather we are going to have in September and October, which I am really looking forward to. With my big deep sea fishing adventure over, but still fresh in my mind, it will be an adventure that will live with me for a lifetime. However, I have to get out of the fishing mode for a bit and start preparing for my fall bow hunting adventures, which are less than 25 sleeps away already. The 2012 hunting draw results came out in late July, but my lucky charms were not effective as I was not successful on all the draws. Although, I am hoping the exception will be the yet to

be released August 12th draw results. It is the antelope; the speed demons of the prairies. This is another huge adventure in itself as the draw for antelope now takes 7 or 8 years or more in areas to be successful. So, I am not going to hold my breath on that even though I have 6 years priority for that draw. The local elk, mule, deer and whitetail adventures will keep me very happy. I already have the first couple of weeks in September booked off so that should be stock full of memorable adventures and I’m looking forward to it. The one thing I am not looking forward to is the rush of all the last minute shooters piling up at our archery shop in the short time before then. I appreciate the business…but all at once?... ha ha. Also with three weeks left I had better get into a little better shape for when we have to take the elk for those long walks. I have been trying to get on my mountain bike daily, but that seems to be hit and miss. If I don’t, I know it will be that first 10 minutes Tree & Stump removal. Pruning 60’ Reach

We, in the wee hours, [pun intended] and in pitch black darkness will start our four mile walk just to get to where we start before sun up. So that first day will be a hard judge on the shape you’re in. I hope you all had a great August long weekend and with the awesome weather, got outdoors as much as you could. I did. Even if it was more yard work than I cared for, but summer is going fast and things have to get done. August seems to slip away from me in a flash oddly enough as days are long due to all the extra work in the shop, but that makes September all that more special. This weekend we are heading to the hunting cabin to get her all tip top and ready. There is a lot of chest high grass that needs to be cut, the water system needs to be flushed and we need to make darn sure the power is on. The evening before our big deep sea adventure we ran out to the cabin to get some bait fish we had stashed in the extra deep freeze. with one of its lightning storms was going to ruin our evening. A well placed lightning bolt courtesy of “Mother” nature fried our big main transformer on the power pole feeding power to the cabin and unfortunately we hadn’t been there for several weeks. Here we were in a huge hurry and were now facing this crisis…by the amount my eyes were watering I would guess-ti-mate the power was off for close to two weeks. I opened the big two door refrigerator first, one half being a deep freeze. That sent Blaine outside onto the patio bent over a rail. I braved on and opened the big main deepfreeze. After that we were both bent over the rail with green faces. I took a tube of flavoured toothpaste, put two big squirts on tufts of bathroom tissue and plugged my nostrils with them. It took a while to empty both deep freezes of literally a couple of thousand dollars worth of fine meals. All went over the patio rail; the coyotes were going to eat good tonight. The worst part was what remained on the bottoms of both deep freezes. Hours later we had them both as clean as we possibly could without water due to lack of power. That took well into the darkness that night. After our fishing trip we returned to the cabin for a super clean. Did you know when stripping down a refrigerator you end up with near 50 different pieces? Now armed with hot water and soap, baking soda and bleach, we cleaned every single square inch of both deepfreezes. When we left both were shining and we left huge boxes of baking soda in both. There was still a slight odour in the refrigerator deep freeze, but we are hoping the couple weeks of fresh air and baking soda will diminish that. If not that means a new one. That was one adventure I hope to never have to repeat. We are looking into a lightning rod on the pole, or some type of battery powered warning system to prevent that from happening again. We most likely will spend the weekend at the cabin. Even though it’s work it’s like a camping trip. Get out there folks and enjoy the summer.

When the Smoke Clears Scent and smell is the most powerful trigger to the memory, I think I am going to invent a bacon and onion flavoured room deodorant.

A True Touch Of Country Music Franklin Wolters Columnist

Come with me if you will to a small town in central Saskatchewan, where the ideals of the truest form of country music are alive and well. Travel with me north from Paradise Hill and you’ll come through some pretty country along a splendid big coulee heading the same way we’re travelling. About 10 miles north you turn west and cross the coulee and head up the other side and come to a pine tree covered yard with some neat buildings nestled there. There is a good sized yard there and you’d wonder what would bring anyone to this place seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The first Sunday of the month about one in the afternoon the yard will suddenly start filling up with vehicles. I thought where in all this big seemingly empty countr y can there be enough people to fill the 2 car garage all set up with chairs for seating a nice audience, and microphone and sound systems in place for musicians to hold forth and make music. As if by magic the places around the sides and end of the garage are filled with musicians playing all manner of instruments, ten or so usually, and can include everything from violins, mandolins, several styles of guitar, accordions, keyboards, banjos and when I’m there a harmonica player. You’d wonder how these people, many who don’t know each other, could make such a really wonderful sound. These people aren’t dressed too

fancy maybe, and they are hardworking people with work scarred hands, but their instruments are well used and kept and in those hands that work for a living, they pour forth the music from their very hearts. If you love country like I do it really touches your heart. I feel the thrills up my spine at some of the guitar picking and fiddle playing that my voice catches when I’m singing. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve been there. All this in a place far from any centre or towns, the only attraction is the music played there. Folks sit there thoroughly enjoying the whole deal. I’m amazed when I hear people tell me country music is dull and boring. I just shake my head. It moves me so I wonder what I see that the others don’t. I’m amazed that I’m so well received in the ranks of the real musicians I guess I don’t care about what people who don’t see country as special think. Well, anyway my contention is the music reflects the whole spectrum of life from the happiest to the saddest and is put to music that if played with passion and feeling, and sung in such a way that the feeling the writer of the piece was feeling and wanted to convey in the song, then that music makes sense. When you hear music played and sang with that passion then you can really know the feeling that had to be present to bring that story in song to be made real. As you look around the circle of players, you don’t see one sheet of music or any one following someone else’s arrangement, most of us just play the tune as we feel it. It’s funny how it all comes out in such a completely

connected way. Seems like when you play music with someone you get to know that person in a real way. Back when I first started to learn to play my harmonica my family felt compelled to shut me up in my room so they could stand the hours of practice I guess I subjected them to, so now I’m really glad I stuck with it so that I can get something like acceptance. Now I certainly had no idea though, at the time, I would ever,

ever play or sing in front of an audience of any kind, and wonder of wonders even have them enjoy the process. It’s a wonderful outlet for anyone, let alone an old cowboy that’s not really much use for anything else anymore. I can honestly say it’s so much fun and so rewarding I wish I had started to do it earlier and maybe I could have travelled the country and entertained from coast to coast. What a dream.

Foul-mouthery, we know, is not a 21st Century invention. Despite the preponderance of vulgar or “blue” language found in our movies, within hip-hop and rap music lyrics, in the privacy of executive boardrooms or our mechanic’s auto shop, and almost anywhere where people gather for socializing or work, we probably couldn’t hold a candle to some of our lewd, expletive-savvy ancestors. Mohr, when asked why she thinks we use foul language so readily, says that it’s because whether we’re expressing anger, joy, or pain, it’s in foul language that we find the most powerful and satisfying medium of describing how we feel. Swearing has even been shown to assist us in increasing our threshold of pain. Remember that next time you undertake a miserable task. Perhaps the employment of a blue language mantra will help you to endure the pain of it with slightly less discomfort. Swearing at or Insulting Your Fellow Man, a work certain to have already been written by someone somewhere. Culturally, those words and phrases categorized as foul or blue language reveal plenty about what types of subjects were considered most taboo and therefore also foremost on people’s minds in the past. If we examine the current roster of popular curse words, we can see that such a pattern continues. Those subjects about which a culture feels most conflicted and obsessed are often the same as those which it denigrates in its language. What do you suppose can be gleaned from the knowledge that the blue language used in ancient Roman culture reveals a definite preoccupation with sexual innuendo, body parts, and acts of indecency? In the Middle Ages, according to Ms. Mohr, the trend shifted toward references associated with religious themes and taboos, while the rise of blue language most immersed in sexual connotation and scatological references has been strongly associated with the Victorian Age. Today, possibly the most venomous type of language involves racial slurs. Raising issues of origin, heritage, and race in derogatory terms are the most hurtful and deeply insulting to those on the receiving end of such language. Indeed, these kinds of exchanges enter into a realm far more complicated than mere foul language. They reflect our changing cultural landscape and, perhaps both our unease and adjustment to it. It would be incorrect to suggest that only the uneducated or uncultured among us use foul language, although we might agree that the excessive use of blue language in certain cases has diminished the impact of words previously thought to be profoundly shocking. [Pass me the f’in butter, you f’in hoarder, can’t you see how f’in hungry I am?]. Such commonplace use of foul language becomes not only tedious but eventually serves to render a previously impactful word quite lame and ineffective. It may even be thought of as simply the language of the unimaginative. It is Ms Mohr’s opinion that blue language has existed throughout history and will forever remain with us. While the terms will shift to better reflect the current taboos and obsessions of our culture, we can be sure that the Bank of Blue Language, with its bounty of resources on deposit, will always be open for business.

I used a combination of ground pork and ground moose, although beef is more traditionally used in hash. I also have made it with all ground moose and it is very good. The onion, molasses, mustard and Worcestershire sauce combination gives it that amazing home cooked flavor. This is th e s a m e i n g re d i e nt co m b i nation often used to give baked beans their characteristic flavor. Historically molasses was the most popular sweetener used, brought by ship from the Caribbean Islands. Molasses is derived from the sugar cane and is a very good source of many minerals such as manganese, copper, iron, p o t a s si u m , m a g n e si u m , c a l c i u m , B6 and selenium. Many people are s e n si ti ve to su l p h i te s , s o a l way s try to purchase unsulfured molasses. Interestingly, hash has made a comeback. Upscale restaurants are adding hashes to their menu made of salmon, trout, chicken chipotle and artichoke. A recent cookbook called Hashcapades by Clark Haass explores over 30 different hashes. As always, what’s old becomes new again.

Hash is a one pot dish, no pun intended. This western hash is based on a recipe from a vintage Toronto Star Weekly cook book edited by Marjorie Elwood. This Toronto food editor referred to it as western hash, but here in the west, it is just called hash. This a cowb oy dish that historically was m a d e a h e a d a n d re h e ate d at th e camp site after a long day of moving cattle. Versions of it are also found in another vintage cook book from the Women of Unifarm, published in Edmonton, Alberta. It was a popular rural dish, enjoyed across the prairies in a time when women were at home and had a little more time to cook. It has all the flavor that one would expect from a home cooked meal. This is a good dish for weekend cooking, because it has an extended cooking time with the rice, therefore it is not a quick make after work meal. Hash can also be made like the chuck wagon master, ahead of time, refrigHash erated and reheated when you get 1 - 2 tablespoons oil such as home from work. Hash can be frozen safflower or canola as well, for use later in the week. It 1 1 / 2 - 2 pounds ground meat can be made with ground beef, pork, 1 onion chopped moose, turkey or a combination of 1 large can of tomatoes, 796 ml ground meats. DECK SAFETY PART 1

Deck safety is something an inspector needs to pay close attention to. It is important to remember that a home inspection is not a code inspection. That means the inspector is not trying to go through the home and point out every code infraction. The deck is one area where the line between the home and code inspection may intersect. As a home inspector I try to look at the deck in terms of safety for those using it. I don’t know if there will be seniors or infants on the deck so I personally point out issues that may lead to a fall or trip on the deck. When looking at the deck I pay close attention to the deck surface for rot or other openings that could trip someone. I also look at the railing to see if there are any openings larger than 4”. I chose 4” because that is what is the current standard or code as the maximum opening between spindles. If I notice that there are openings of five or six inches I simply state that the deck could be made safer if it was up to the current standard of 4”. Most of the time the clients are not at all concerned but I feel it is my duty to forewarn them just in case they may feel it is important enough to make the changes. There are other common issues with decks that I look for. The biggest safety issue in my mind is the use of bench seating on the deck. These benches usually have ample room for children to crawl under and over the edge of the deck. Worse yet the top of the bench back is often very high off the ground. A small child of four or five can lean over or climb over the back and fall several feet to the ground. The rule for bench seats is that if the deck surface is under six feet off the ground the back of the bench seat must extend 36” above the seat itself in a manner that would not allow a child to climb over it. President Glenn Charlesworth To Retire In 2014 Lakeland College News Release

After more than 30 years working at Lakeland College including the past seven years as president and chief executive officer, Glenn Charlesworth has announced that he will retire on Jan. 3, 2014. Charlesworth started his career at Lakeland College in 1982 as a business instructor. He was in the business department for 21 years before accepting the position of vice president of finance and operations in 2003. He became the president and chief executive officer on July 1, 2006. Milt Wakefield, chairman of the Lakeland College Board of Governors, says Charlesworth has done a terrific job leading the college. “Glenn is an outstanding leader who always puts the best interests of the college first. There’s no question that during his years as president, Lakeland College has thrived,” says Wakefield.

Highlights of Charlesworth’s tenure as president include: • Strong fiscal management that enabled the college to focus funds in high priority areas. • Completion of many capital projects. At the Vermilion campus projects include extensive residence renovations, modernization of the Applied Engineering building, construction of a Student Centre, and retrofitting of the Trades Centre mezzanine. Construction of the Bill Kondro Wing, development of an on-campus spa for the esthetician program and most recently the start of construction of a Petroleum Centre are among the highlights at the Lloydminster campus. • Purchase of 580 hectares of agricultural land and a yard with three houses that borders the west side of the Vermilion campus. One house was renovated to include multiple renewable energy systems and is now the college’s Renewable Energy Learning Centre. • Growth of applied research particularly in the areas of renewable energy,

A Tale of Two Fairs – Mannville Shannon O’Connor Reporter The Mannville Fair got off to a great start on Saturday, August 17 with fair weather and 262 people served at the pancake breakfast held at the Main Street gazebo by the Mannville Historical Society. President Lillian Konieczny said it was a good turnout for the breakfast and goes a long way to getting new items into the museum like the recent acquisition of a 1924 quilt that has the names of the

Second Year Success For Gazebo BBQ Fundraiser Shannon O’Connor Reporter The Vermilion Health Centre (VHC) and the Vermilion Continuing Care Centre (VCC) are close to reaching their $37,000 target to build a gazebo in the VHC/VCC courtyard, said Event Organizer, Darlene Dary during the second BBQ fundraiser in as many years, held on August 13. Tickets to the fundraiser were $10 each and 135 sold. A garage sale, raffle tickets and individual donations helped boost the total amount raised to $6,500. In addition, funds donated by the Vermilion Rotary Club, CNRL, the Friends of the VHC and various individuals have put the gazebo project in a green light position to begin building by next summer. “We are at the stage where we can submit a proposal bid to tender to Alberta Health Services.” Dary said none of this would have been possible without the support of countless volunteers. This year the Booth-

man family volunteered their musical talents and performed many traditional tunes such as “Farewell to Nova Scotia” for residents, attendees, staff and volunteers. Cathy Arychuk also volunteered her time and entertained with her Dog Agility show. Volunteers Paul Mistal, Ray Wynnyk and Trevor Clarke tended to the BBQ and cooked up a great chicken feast for the event. Over the August 9-11 weekend the 5th Annual Experience the Bounty in the County was held. The program, promoted by Beaver County, encourages Ag-tourism by securing local support and promoting a variety of rural and agricultural activities. Part of the weekend’s events was the Tractor show held at the farm of Norman and Judy Erickson. The tractor show, which has participated all five years in the Bounty in the County program, offered an eyeful for

tractor lovers by displaying 63 restored units this year. All of the trac tors are privately owned by Norman Erickson and all but four of the tractor units were restored by Norman Erickson as well. The trac tor show also featured a display by Judy Erickson as she promoted her “Booties for Belize,” a fundraiser she pursues throughout the year to raise funds for a needy family in Belize. Judy crochets specialized sneaker booties, baby blankets and caps then sells them to raise funds.

Rage Vs. Roar Vs. Cancer Shannon O’Connor Reporter The only loser in a charity lacrosse game that will pit junior against senior, Rage against Roar and player against scissors, will be cancer. All the proceeds from this “Rage Against Cancer” event will go toward the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) to help fight cancer, said Event Organizer Logan James Scheerschmidt. Musician and singer/songwriter Scheerschmidt is a former Vermilionite who now resides in Lloydminster. He has already waged his own fight against cancer by donating the proceeds of his song “100 Years Young” to the CCS. Written in honour of his grandfather’s 100th birthday he is donating the proceeds of purchased songs to the CCS in memory of his grandmother who passed away from cancer before he was born. “This event is snowballing from the song,” said Scheerschmidt. Scheerschmidt and Vermilion Rage Captain Greg Betz used to play junior

lacrosse together. Initially Scheerschmidt wanted to come out and play a game with his former teammates as a way to promote the fight against cancer. “Greg suggested a big charity game against the Junior Roars.” The Roars are fresh from their fourth consecutive Provincial title win. After that, the event came together quickly though a big challenge was the scheduling said Scheerschmidt. There were play-offs, Provincials and summer holidays to contend with. “I think we picked a good date to get people to come out and we are receiving a lot of promotion and support from media and sponsors.” “We have enough items donated from sponsors to have a silent auction.” Packages and prizes from sponsors such as Eastalta Co-op, Intrigue Aesthetics, the Vermilion Liquor Store and Bern’s Pizza will be available to bid on. “And more people are chipping in every day,” said Scheerschmidt. Perhaps the biggest bidding war will take place during second intermission when one of the lacrosse players will get his head shaved. “Whoever wins the bid

gets to choose which player loses his hair.” Twenty six year old Captain Betz said there would be six volunteers for this part of the event. “We’re all young so we don’t have to worry about losing our hair,” he joked. It’s a great sport (lacrosse) supporting a great cause, added Betz. During the first intermission of the exhibition game, Scheerschmidt will play“100 Years Young” and three or four other songs. Although Scheerschmidt has planned music shows, this is his first charity event and he is impressed with the level of support from sponsors in Lloydminster and Vermilion. “I am thankful that both communities have stepped up in such a big way.” “Rage Against Cancer” will take place at the Vermilion Stadium on Saturday, August 24 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 at the door. Little did I know that after twenty-seven years I would still find myself digging up sod, planting perennials, joining a gardening club and finding it very hard to drive past a greenhouse without stopping. I am sure I am not the only lucky recipient of Gail and Ron’s willingness to share their knowledge and garden many people have been able to stop and enjoy the Walker’s hospitality. The Rhythm Boys were given the Galaxie Supernova Award at the 2012 Ottawa Folk Festival for Outstanding Live Performance. On Saturday, November 2, Rick Fines and Susie Vinnick bring us great bass playing, great vocals, and some acoustic blues in their blend of music from their very successful solo careers. Local News Vermilion Minor Baseball Receives Donation From Lakeland Rustlers

Ten year old Bryn Pollard, a “Squirt” with the Vermilion Shadows and 8 year old Zi Qi Shang, a “Rookie” with the Vermilion Reds, accepted a $1,000 cheque on behalf of Vermilion Minor Baseball from Lakeland College’s Cross Country Running Coach Lyle Worobec on Friday, August 16 at Lakeland College. The cheque is a result of the Lakeland Runaway event that was held on May, 11 that was organized by the Lakeland Rustlers. The proceeds from the event go toward scholarships and local youth sports groups. This year Vermilion Minor Baseball was selected to share the proceeds. “The Rustlers are extremely happy to give back to the community,” stated Coordinator of Recreation and Athletics, Alan Rogan. “Magic Of Mistahiya” Shannon O’Connor Reporter

The hills came alive with the sound of music for the third year running as the “Come By The Hills” music festival opened at Mistahiya on Friday, August 16. Cliff Brown, co-owner of the former ski resort where the festival takes place and co-organizer of the event, heralded the official opening of the festival by making his way to the stage in traditional highland attire while playing his bagpipes. The opening act for the festival, traditional Celtic Edmonton based band Celtara, accompanied Brown when he reached the stage while M.C. Ken Eshpeter welcomed everyone to “magical Mistahiya.” There is a confluence of factors contributing to this magic that includes the venue, the talent the organizers, volunteers and devoted attendees resulting in a definite “feel” about the event. The hills provide the perfect backdrop for the musicians acoustically and aesthetically. The overhead rope tows of the former ski hill are no longer in use but provide a visual reminder of something that once was; a thematic inspiration for many great songwriters and musicians. After Celtara opened the festival, Jim Byrnes and Kim Churchill followed. Byrnes is legendary in the blues world and is the recipient of three Junos and two Juno nominations. On stage with him was Lindsay Mitchell, guitarist and former member

One of the volunteer organizers Todd Aughey said he originally started volunteering when he lived in Wainwright three years ago. He has since relocated to Medicine Hat but comes back to help “because it is such a great event.” Other die-hard volunteers included Vermilion residents Bonnie and Peter Walsh, whose iconic blue VW camper stood out in the volunteer campground. “We decided to get serious about volunteering this year so we brought the camper,” said Walsh. Devoted attendees also camped out for the weekend and brought lawn chairs and blankets to lounge on while enjoying the music. Trying to pinpoint the typical attendee would be impossible as they ranged from children to senior citizens. Styles were as varied as the musical lineup and it all added to the magic that is Mistahiya. The “Come By The Hills” festival wrapped up on Saturday, August 17 with a stellar line-up throughout the day and evening, including more award winning artists such as Tenille 2012 and 2013’s ACMA Female Vocalist of the Year, Daniel Gervais Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and Oscar Lopez a two time Juno winner and 7 time Juno nominee.

Vipers Make Waves At Regional Championship

Members of the Vermilion Vipers Swim Club competed in the Region C Championship August 9 & 10 at Sherwood Park where they competed against other clubs from Lloydminster, Wainwright, Provost, Camrose, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton and Wetaskiwin. The Vipers successfully qualified for the Alberta Summer Swim Association’s provincial championship Aug 18 & 19 in Edmonton in individual and relay events.
