The Islay Curling Club hosted its second annual Firefighter Appreciation Bonspiel January 24–28. Of the 12 teams that registered, three were fire department teams: Clandonald, Vermilion, and Islay. Teams curled on the Wednesday and Thursday nights as well as all day Saturday and finals on Sunday, with an Appreciation Banquet held for local firefighters on the Friday night. The banquet had over 100 guests. Many suppor ters came in during the curling to watch the games, get an Islay Burger, have a drink and socialize. M e m b er s fr o m t h e C l a n d o n a l d , Vermilion, and Islay fire departments helped out alongside local volunteers and Islay Curling Club members in the kitchen and bar as well as with selling 50/50 tickets at the banquet. Silent auction items received bids throughout the weekend and a live auction was held at the banquet. The event raised just over $9,000, w h i c h w i l l b e s h ar e d a m o n g s t a l l eight fire departments in the County of Vermilion River. Obituary for Roy Ivan McInnes
Roy Ivan McInnes passed away at Lloydminster Hospital, Lloydminster, Saskatchewan on January 16, 2024 at the age of 78 years. Roy is survived by: his loving wife, Elizabeth Strand; children, Shandra (Rod) Matthews, Cindy (Rob) Munroe and Rodney (Ann-Dee) Nunweiler; grandchildren, Cole, Madison, Regann, Ian, Peggy, Bobbie (Taylor) and Allen (Zoey); great-grandchildren, Kolby and Toni; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Roy was predeceased by: his parents; Ivan and Winnifred McInnes; sisters, Nancy Stanley and Lenore Taylor; and brothers-in-law, Ken Stanley and Art Taylor. No Memorial Service was held at this time. An announcement will come at a later date. Donations in memory of Roy may be made to MS Society or donor's charity of choice.

Roy Ivan McInnes was born December 4, 1945 in Vermilion, Alberta. He grew up on the family homestead in Buffalo Coulee (25km south of Vermilion), with his father, Ivan, his mother, Winifred, his older sister, Lenore and is younger sister, Nancy. Roy always spoke very fondly of life on the farm, particularly when it involved horses, one in particular named “Slim” who would forever be his favorite. To complete high school, he moved to Mannville where he met Doris Johnstone. They wed in 1966 and moved to Sherwood Park where they raised their two daughters, Shandra and Cindy. This time marked the beginning of Roy’s career as a property appraiser. The family enjoyed years of watersports at their lakefront cabin. Roy also enjoyed trap shooting, pheasant hunting, sledding (snowmobiles), reading good western novels and playing cards, usually crib. In 1980, it was decided the family would move to Lloydminster. Roy would go on to open his own appraisal firm which would span 30 years. He continued to enjoy the same activities, but now home base was the farm owned by his sister, Nancy and her husband, Ken. Roy and Ken became great friends, spending much time in the toy shed or sledding across snow covered fields. In 1987, Roy and Doris went their separate ways and Shandra and Cindy headed off to university, so Roy poured himself into work. On one fateful day in 1988, when he dropped off an appraisal to a local bank, he met Ann Strand. They would be friends for 20 years before becoming a couple in 2008. They enjoyed many years of horses, golfing and travelling. Roy’s family grew to include son-in-laws, Rod and Rob and Recreation, Environmental Conservation, grandchildren, Cole, Madison, Regann and Ian. Hi! I'm Aristotle. I was found on the streets with a scar on my ear, maybe from a fight, but I am a loving, amazing cat. When my foster mum hosts friends over the other cats run away and hide but I am always right there getting all the love and attention. If you don't keep an eye on food that's out, I will go and try to help myself to it. I also try very hard to lick your plate after you're done eating. I hate having my nails clipped but won't bite or scratch the human doing it. I am wary of dogs and other cats, so I had to be slowly introduced to the other cats in my foster mum's home. When we finally did meet though we didn't fight but I still prefer my own space. I am very curious about the outdoors and try to sneak out whenever the back door is opened for my foster human's dog. So my future humans will have to be cognizant of that so that I don't escape when a door is opened. I'm a wonderful, handsome cat and a very good boy. I don't mind being handled although I am fairly independent and not much of a cuddler. I never try to sleep on my human's bed; I prefer my own space elsewhere. I am good with kids but might like being the only cat in the house. My foster human thinks I'd be good in a home with people who don't want a clingy cat, although she is trying to get me used to longer cuddles. Contact the shelter to inquire more about me!
