Transforming Patient Care For Our Community Why are changes needed? Today, French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) is at a pivotal point in its history. Though we have made many incremental advances, our 40-year-old facility was built to accommodate a different era in medicine. It is time to grow again. That is why we have launched the “French -Well into the Future� campaign. This effort is driving our largest investment in over 10 years. When the need arises, nothing is more important than access to a robust community hospital. As a not-for-profit,
we continually reinvest any profits from patient visits into the hospital to meet community needs. However, philanthropic support is a key element in our ability to continue delivering the high-quality, compassionate care that everyone in San Luis Obispo County has come to rely on. This five-initiative project is currently underway, with portions already complete and others ready to begin. Over the next year, French Hospital will be transformed into a hospital of the future.

one of a kind SURGICAL SUITE This state-of-the-art Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite will be the first of its kind between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It will allow cardiologists, interventional radiologists and surgeons to perform procedures on the same patient without transferring to a second operating room or scheduling a second visit. Patients spend less time in the hospital, face fewer risks and recover quickly.
Enhancements for Critically Ill Patients Our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is comfortable and more spacious, helping to create a brighter and more encouraging space for critical patients. New rooms include floating tower ports for electricity, oxygen and intravenous pumps to reduce clutter and improve access. New glass doors offer a quiet healing environment and uninterrupted observation.

A new 12-bed prep and recovery suite in the center of the hospital offers direct access into the catheterization laboratory or surgical suites to help expedite patient treatment. More beds, greater privacy, and better access to visitors mean less waiting and a faster route to recovery for patients.
This expansion of the Family Birthing Center will add private patient rooms that allow for labor, delivery, recovery and post-partum all in one relaxing space. When circumstances call for a C-section, families will rest easy knowing mom is treated by exceptional staff in the new C-section suite just steps away.
This modern 14-bed specialty wing will focus on meeting the needs of specialty patients such as orthopedic and oncology patients.

Breaking Ground on the Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite On August 14, 2013, FHMC broke ground on this state-of-the-art surgical suite, which will be the first of its kind between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Family Foundation Supports Future Technology Today For the second time, the George Hoag Family Foundation contributed to FHMC to support new technology at the hospital. The Santa Monica-based foundation granted $250,000 to the FHMC Foundation to help build our new Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite at our Copeland, Forbes and Rossi Cardiac Care Center. This donation gets us one step closer to offering a new model of multidisciplinary service, bringing together a cardiac operating room and catheterization services into one united space. Grant and Donna Hoag, long-time residents of San Luis Obispo County, chose to support this project through the family foundation to make a difference in the quality of care available in the community. They, like so many others who give, believe it is important to have the most advanced cardiac technology close to home. And we couldn’t agree more.

Local Family Gives to Their Hearts Content One million dollar donation supports future he alth care The Copeland family of San Luis Obispo is no stranger to generosity. In addition to joining the Forbes and Rossi families in 2007 to help fund and create the Copeland, Forbes and Rossi Cardiac Care Center at FHMC, the Copelands have once again generously donated to the hospital to support its multimillion-dollar expansion project. The Copelands donated $1 million to support the hospital’s “French – Well into the Future” campaign. James and Sandra Copeland and Thomas and Pamela Copeland, longtime San Luis Obispo residents and recognized business leaders and philanthropists, are avid supporters of the community, and have given generously in many ways over the years. The family knows that supporting not-for-profit community health care is important to assuring access to quality care for future generations. We couldn’t do any of this without their generous support.

Bringing Humanit y to He alth C are How the New ICU Touched the Lives of One Local Family
One day in the early morning hours, San Luis Obispo resident Tom Sherman unexpectedly collapsed at home. San Luis Ambulance responded and immediately transported him to FHMC, where he was diagnosed with sepsis and pneumonia. Our team was ready for him. Due to the sudden severity of his illnesses, he needed an extensive stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where he received great care and monitoring. “We received exceptional care in the French Hospital ICU,” Tom recalls of his experience. “The doctors, nurses, therapists and staff members we met were professional, respectful and caring. There was also great communication among the entire hospital team, which ensured smooth continuity of care. The nursing staff was especially wonderful and would take extra time to explain the many machines and medical terminology to our family. Their helpfulness was a welcome comfort during an overwhelming time.” Thanks to the new state-of-the-art unit, as well as the kindness and knowledge of the staff, Tom and his family knew he was in great hands and eventually he was well enough to go home. He and his family say they would highly

recommend FHMC to others who need calm and attentive medical care from people who are genuinely concerned about the patients who come through our doors. Reflecting on the FHMC team’s concern for the health and wellbeing of the entire family, Tom said:
“We especially appreciated their unwavering optimism, which gave our family seeds of hope when we needed them the most.” Through the “French – Well into the Future” campaign, the ICU was remodeled to create a better experience for patients, and better patient access for nurses and medical staff. Tom and his family benefitted from this remodel, and future generations will benefit as well.

Central Coast surfer Bob “Helmet Bob” Voglin celebrates an extraordinary 10th anniversary this year – the anniversary of his cancer diagnosis. And he says he was lucky enough to have commemorated this anniversary at the second annual Surfing for Hope, an event he co-founded that raises funds for the Hearst Cancer Resource Center (HCRC ) and Angel of Hope Fund.
Life- Changing Diagnosis In 2003, Bob’s life was good – he surfed often, worked hard, and spent time with his two sons and wife, Nancy. So when he found an odd lump in his throat in November 2003, he didn’t think much of it, until he got the news that would change his life forever – the lump was throat cancer and it had spread. By January 2004, Bob started 35 straight days of throat radiation and some chemotherapy.
Critical Turning Point Due to the affects of his treatment, Bob had to be placed on a feeding tube for six months and lost a significant amount of weight. “I was doing pretty well until February, when I couldn’t surf anymore,” Bob said. Despite the incredible care he received, his morale was very low. Nancy spoke with a nutritionist who told her she needed to get Bob surfing again. But Bob was resistant, at first. One day, Nancy helped Bob into the car, loaded his board and wetsuit, and drove him to Pismo Beach. She wrapped his stomach and the feeding tube in plastic wrap, helped him suit up and pulled him out to the beach. “My stomach was still very sore, so I had to paddle out on my knees,” he explained. “I sat there for a minute, and then caught a wave. I felt the wind on my face and the wonderful experience of surfing. All that mattered was that special feeling, and I was alive. And that was one of my big turning points, when I started to get better.”
Uniting Doctors and Surfers At the time, Bob and his family didn’t have local resources to help them understand throat cancer and its effects. Then in 2008, the HCRC opened and began offering free information, education and support to local cancer patients. “I was there when the Hearst Cancer Resource Center opened,” Bob said. “I wished it was there when I was going through cancer because we didn’t have any information available to us. So we really appreciate what the center does for local cancer patients and their families. It’s wonderful.” Still, he felt like something was missing.

“I just thought, ‘What if we got the doctor world and the surfing world together and did a fundraising event for the Hearst Cancer Resource Center?’” Eventually Bob recruited his oncologist, Dr. Tom Spillane, and his wife, Dr. Karen Allen, to join in the effort. Together with Drs. Spillane and Allen, a passionate group of surfers, and the FHMC Foundation, Bob turned his idea into a reality, creating Surfing for Hope.
Continuing the Cause Since its inauguration in November 2012, overwhelming support for Surfing for Hope has poured in from both the medical and surfing communities, demonstrated by the more than $108,000 that has been raised for the HCRC and the Angel of Hope Fund, which assists cancer patients with special needs for medical bills, prescriptions, and more. “The comments I got from people in the medical field were just amazing. They all thought this event, with the paddleout memorial, surf-themed gala dinner and surf contest was just so fun and genuine. Everyone just got it.” Bob hopes that next year’s Surfing for Hope event will be even better. He knows firsthand just how important it is to have resources and support when dealing with such a pervasive disease. But there is hope, and Bob wants to share that hope in the best way he knows how – through surfing. Employees Touching Lives Our hospital is full of angels. They don’t have wings, but they make miracles happen every day. FHMC employees provide countless hours of services that make a difference in the lives of our patients in unimaginable ways. But they don’t stop there. Each year, more than 100 employees contribute to the Employee Caring Circle, a fund used to benefit our patients. These funds help support our efforts to make a patient’s stay at the hospital more comfortable. Since 2006, hospital employees have voluntarily given more than $260,000 to this fund, which has improved the patient experience at FHMC. Past support from this fund has helped provide a heat-ondemand tray system for delivering patient meals, renovations to the French Bistro Café and created both the Healing Garden and Outdoor Fitness Zone. Employee Giving Campaign
Volunteers Touching Lives Joyce Cameron is a tireless and devoted volunteer. Her smiling face and warm heart provides needed assistance to patients and visitors throughout the hospital. In September 2013, she received a special pin honoring the 5,500 hours she has dedicated to FHMC over the past 10 years. Not only does she give generously of her time as a volunteer, Joyce also took on an important leadership role as the President of the French Hospital Medical Center Volunteer Guild in 2012. The mother of three, grandmother of seven, and greatgrandmother of one can be found at the hospital’s front desk on Tuesdays and Thursdays greeting guests as they walk in the doors. Volunteers perform a variety of tasks at FHMC, including working in the gift shop, running errands, discharging patients, and even visiting with patients. The Volunteer Guild is responsible for operating our special boutique gift shop – La French Shoppe – located in the lobby of the hospital. Working closely with Rendee
Dore, Gift Shop Coordinator, the shop provides unique gift items to lift the spirits of our patients and offers a pleasant shopping experience for visitors, employees and the community. The net proceeds from the La French Shoppe are then donated to the hospital from the Volunteer Guild to support many needed hospital services and to purchase new medical equipment. “We try to give back as often and as much as we can. We’ve donated toward the Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite, to refurbish the front lobby, to remodel the café and we’ve even donated $10,000 to the Emergency Department,” Joyce said with much pride. With about 120 volunteers, the Volunteer Guild has given 16,710 hours so far this year. And Joyce doesn’t plan on stopping any time soon. “I’ll continue as long as I can be of service and do my job properly,” she said with a smile. “It keeps me going.”

The Foundation Board of Directors is made up of unpaid volunteers who donate their time and effort to raise funds, and since its inception in 2005, the FHMC Foundation has raised more than $17 million for patient care and services. Meet the Chair Pierre Rademaker, founder and creative director of Rademaker Design and longtime FHMC Foundation board member, was elected Chair of the 2013-14 FHMC Foundation Board of Directors this year. With a client list that ranges from the iconic GAP logo to Friends of the Hearst Castle, and a long, diverse list in between, Rademaker Design helps numerous businesses and organizations successfully define themselves. A loyal community advocate, Pierre was honored by the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce as the San Luis Obispo Citizen of the Year in 2003.
Meet the Vice Chair Reese T. Davies, a banking and financial services professional and lifelong resident of San Luis Obispo, was elected Vice Chair of the 2013-14 FHMC Foundation Board of Directors this year. With nearly 50 years of institutional financial experience as well as executive experience, including as the president and chief administrative officer of Founders Community Bank, he brings an acute understanding of fiscal responsibilities to the numerous community organizations, nonprofits and foundations on which he serves.
Meet the Secretary/ Tre asurer Bill Thoma, president of Thoma Electric and longtime FHMC Foundation board member, was appointed Interim Secretary/Treasurer of the 2013-14 FHMC Foundation Board of Directors this year. He has extensive experience in strategic planning for nonprofit organizations and for-profit organizations alike, and has spent almost half a century living, working and volunteering in San Luis Obispo. He has received numerous honors and awards, and was named the San Luis Obispo Citizen of the Year by the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce in 1997.

The FHMC Foundation presented Jim Sargen with the 2012 Louis Tedone, M.D., Humanitarian Award at the annual Celebration of Caring Gala. Through his extensive volunteer and charitable efforts, Jim is committed to improving the quality of life in our community. Jim was a founding member and past Board Vice Chair of the French Hospital Medical Center Foundation. Jim’s commitment to the well-being of others emerged in his business efforts with the creation of health-focused TriActive America, Inc., an outdoor fitness equipment company. With numerous leadership roles in a variety of organizations including the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center, Cuesta College Foundation, YMCA, Cal Poly, and the Foundation for the California Community Colleges, Jim has earned numerous recognitions over the years, including Philanthropist of the Year from the Central Coast Community Impact Awards and Network of California Community Colleges.
Louis Tedone, M.D., Humanitarian Awardard This special award honors the legacy of Dr. Louis Tedone, a man who touched so many lives in San Luis Obispo. He was our community’s first pediatrician and cared for more than 30,000 children during his 45-year career. That’s why we created this award – to recognize Dr. Tedone. Each year, we present the Louis Tedone, M.D., Humanitarian Award to other individuals who have also dedicated a lifetime to the health and well-being of the San Luis Obispo community. 30

The FHMC Foundation presented John and Sandy Dunn with the 2013 Louis Tedone, M.D., Humanitarian Award at the annual Celebration of Caring Gala. Longtime FHMC supporters, John and Sandy represent the true spirit of giving back to their community. Together, they have logged an incredible amount of volunteer hours to support a variety of nonprofit organizations devoted to the arts, health care, social services and education. Their combination of strong leadership and business skills has touched so many lives in our county; it is hard to imagine where their gentle but strong footsteps have not been. From the Performing Arts Center to the Symphony, from French Hospital to the Women’s Shelter, many organizations have benefited from their passion and dedication to make San Luis Obispo a better place today and in the future.
