What Porn Does to Your Brain... And Why You Need to Act Soon by Rosie Makinney If porn is an issue in your marriage, you don’t need me to tell you that something feels off with your sex-life. Heavy porn use typically manifests in one of two very different ways. Either a husband’s sex drive goes through the roof, causing a wife to feel pressured to have sex far more frequently than she would like and/or to partake in acts commonly featured in porn. Or he consistently avoids and rejects her sexually, sometimes even turning the situation around and blaming her for his lack of interest. Either way, a wife inevitably ends up feeling like his disappointment, dissatisfaction, or disinterest is her fault. Porn causes a decline in executive functioning. Porn overuse does not just hijack the reward center of the brain but also the command center—the part of the brain that helps us make reasoned, thoughtful decisions. When both my children were preschoolers and their pre-frontal cortexes were still very much developing, I had to help them set goals, assess risks, keep on task, inhibit the impulse to eat pennies, and reflect on their decision to squirt Mommy’s expensive hand cream down the sink. I was acting as their surrogate pre-frontal cortex, filtering information and guiding them toward decisions that would be good for their survival and well-being. When they reach the age of twenty-five, their prefrontal cortexes will be fully developed and they will have “executive control” of the processes going on in their brains. They will be able to do abstract thinking, set goals, solve problems, regulate behavior, and suppress emotions, impulses, and urges for themselves. Hopefully. That is, as long as they stay away from addiction, and aren’t involved in any head-on collisions. Both heavy porn use and head trauma can cause a condition called “hypofrontality” in the prefrontal cortex.1 With hypofrontality, a person has trouble thinking logically. They become less able to weigh consequences and situations, and override cravings. What was once considered simply a desire is now experienced as a compelling and urgent need. Even when experience teaches that continuing to use porn is going to have serious consequences, the weakened impulse control cannot compete against the cravings. 16 • Spring Sale
There is no point cajoling or waiting for your husband to want to get better if his brain has been hijacked by porn. At this point, he doesn’t need a pep talk, he needs the equivalent of Navy Seals to bust him out of some seriously impaired thinking. In fact, though God can certainly grant him repentance in his mind and heart, you need to remember that his decision-making ability is seriously compromised. And Now for Some Good News! It is not too late. The brain is plastic. Damage caused by porn is not permanent; it is reversible. Risking Friendship with Jesus by Cara L.T. Murphy Eight nautical miles off the west coast of Ireland, Skellig Michael rises like a lost mountain from a basement of pounding surf. Its dark mass pierces the horizon, jagged tips against mirrored blue. The tales I’d heard of the weather-torn mountain promised adventure. Gazing safely from the shoreline, I contemplated what it would be like to climb this mountain—but an ocean barrier existed between myself and Skellig. Without traversing that watery distance, I would never experience the mountain’s stories or the mountain’s power. To know it, to understand it, I needed courage—to cross by boat, wet my face in the salty wind, and climb the granite slopes.
friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father” (John 15:15, The Message). But the reality is that we prefer the role of servant, because it does not require the vulnerability of friendship. Service has its place, but God desires an intimacy beyond the master-servant dynamic. Early Irish Christians spoke of this kind of friend as an anam cara, or ‘soul friend.’ Anam cara friendships are rare, and they require risking closeness in order to experience their depth.
The choice to go from story to experience marks every life.
Have you really experienced Me, or have you just heard the stories?
Shortly before his death, Jesus is asked by Pilate: “Are you the ‘King of the Jews?’” (John 18:33, The Message). Jesus returns Pilate’s query with a question of his own: “Are you saying this on your own, or did others tell you this about me?” (verse 34).
Jesus’ questions come from his heart—an invitation of friendship and intimacy. Through him, we no longer need stare from a distance at something we can never approach. The distance to this mountain of Love has already been crossed by Jesus.
In other words, does our information about Jesus come from our own experience of him, or is it based solely on the stories of others? Through his question, Jesus reminds us that it is possible to know the right things about him without experiencing him ourselves.
Each of us is invited to take courage, receive his questions, and climb for ourselves.
Jesus has come, in all his glory, in all his beauty, in greater raw power than any sea-birthed mountain, and he has invited us to know him in intimate friendship. His questions are the invitations into that friendship. By asking over 300 gospel-questions, Jesus teaches us that he craves a deeper dialogue with his friends. The God who made every mountain has opened himself to us—to be known, to be scaled, to be experienced. Like the people of Exodus, such brilliant, holy closeness frightens us, and we elect others to bear the weight of God’s glorious friendship on our behalf. We prefer the safety of second-hand information from the shore. Jesus, however, challenges the hear-say religion that permeates across generations. “I’m no longer calling you servants,” he said. “No, I’ve named you 20 • Spring Sale
No one else can experience Jesus for us. Through his mediation, the divine Anam Cara has bridged the impassable distance between shore and mountain. As he asked Pilate, so he asks us:

THE STORMS OF LIFE What do you do when the storms of life hit? Do you try to hold on tight, stand firm and hope for the best? When Jesus was with His disciples in a boat on the Sea of Galilee, a great storm blew in. The disciples panicked and went to wake up Jesus. “And they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!’ And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, ‘Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?’” (Mark 4:38-40) Although Jesus was in the boat with them, the disciples were afraid because they did not have their faith in the One who could save them. What about you? What are you trusting in to save you—money, possessions, relationships, career, yourself? Like the winds of change, the things of this world can be here one day and gone the next. Jesus is with you and able to save you and satisfy your greatest need—your need for a Savior. According to Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Although we are all sinners (Romans 3:23) and cannot save ourselves from the consequence of sin (i.e.
death), there is hope. God has offered you a gift of eternal life through Jesus. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus paid the price for your sins through His death on the cross and won the victory over death when He rose again the third day. Therefore, it is only through Him that you can be saved. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Will you now take God at His word and accept Jesus as your Savior from sin? If you would like to have the gift of eternal life now, you may use the following prayer as a guide to express your desire to God: Dear God, I know that I am a sinner. Thank you for sending your perfect Son to die in my place. I know that it is only through His sacrificial death on the cross and resurrection from the dead that I am able to have a new life in You. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ name, Amen If you have accepted God’s gift of new life, please let us know so we can encourage you and pray for you.
