Being the best is expensive! The spectrum of work at CMC is hard to contemplate: from research labs that are among the finest in India, and where some of the most vexing questions in healthcare are being answered; to top clinical care that brings patients from countries and continents across the globe; to our ministry of service and care for the poorest of the poor, in their villages, day in and day out. With only a few weeks left in the fiscal year, we are asking you to make CMC’s future a priority in your year-end giving. There is so much to gain! Thank you.
I’ve been giving a great deal of thought to my first year at the Foundation. Assessing, listening, learning and immersing myself in the true miracle that exists at CMC in Vellore. Dr. Ida S. Scudder could not possibly have imagined today’s CMC when she returned to India in 1900, barely 30 years of age, to open a one-bed dispensary in her parents’ bungalow. She answered a call and had the fearlessness that deep faith provides. The people who supported her also put aside their expectations because in her they saw something different. I see that trust in you, our donors, every time you invest in CMC. Vellore is half a world away. Maybe you studied there; maybe you visit occasionally; maybe you’ve never been there. I believe that you see something different there that moves you. The point of all this is to say that our mission at the Foundation is not to balance CMC’s budget. It is to fund greatness. Saying Thank You to Anish Mathai...
A
fter an unprecedented six years as Board Chair, Anish Mathai stepped down on October 25 to what we hope is a very brief ‘retirement’ from service. Over $5 million in public and private funds flowed through the Foundation during that period, supporting fellowships for doctors and nurses, patient programs, completion of a new campus for the College of Nursing and many capital improvements at the CMC hospitals. By anyone’s account the Foundation has made a sea change under his leadership, moving from friend of CMC to full partner, vested in the highest standards of growth and sustainability. Anish grew up in India and knew CMC through his family’s dedication to service. His father Stephen led the non-profit Christian Agency for Social Action (CASA). When he came to the Vellore CMC Board USA as it was known then, Anish had a unique blend of business acumen and sensitivity to the ways of the public sector. His professional life as a finance executive and entrepreneur gave him the patience, steely nerves, and the willingness to take risks as he helped steer the Foundation into new territory. Today, with a name that reflects its current purpose, and a Board that continues to be populated by proactive, talented supporters, the Vellore CMC Foundation is poised for impact. Anish’s deep faith and reverence for the legacy of CMC’s founder, Dr. Ida S. Scudder, have guided each period of change. He oversaw a successful strategic planning process; engaged a respected fund raising consultant to lay the groundwork for world-class fund raising; and instituted the Dr. Ida S. Scudder Humanitarian Oration to forever link the beginning of CMC to its contemporary greatness. Ultimately he shaped an aggressive agenda for the Foundation that focuses on medical education and research of the highest order. As a tribute as he finished his last Board meeting, Anish’s extended family surprised him and joined the Foundation Board and staff for toasts and words of gratitude for his leadership. Anish’s spouse Susan, daughter Amreeta, and his many Board colleagues collectively gave a major gift to CMC,in his honor, for the advancement of research... a perfect tribute to a pivotal person in the Foundation’s history.

New Members of Our Board of Directors Lisa M. BeardsleyHardy, PhD, is the Director for the Department of Education forthe Seventh Day Adventist Church, overseeing the denomination’s worldwide educational work. Dr. Beardsley-Hardy holds a Master’s degree in Public Health, another in Business Administration, and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Hawaii.
Jamshed Bharucha, PhD, was named President of The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York City in 2011. He has a PhD from Harvard University in cognitive psychology and has written widely on higher education. Dr. Bharucha is a classically trained violinist and enjoys playing chamber music.

Meredith Hawkins, MD, is the Director of the Global Diabetes Institute, and the Harold and Muriel Block Chair in Medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, NY. An awardwinning researcher, Dr. Hawkins is a Beeson Scholar of the American Federation of Aging Research.
Rev. Canon George I. Kovoor is the Rector of St. John’s Church, New Haven in the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. He is also Chaplain to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Rev. Kovoor has traveled to more than 94 nations as a missionary, and currently holds three cannonries within the Anglican Communion.

s a proud CMC alumna, I am honored and humbled to serve my alma mater as Chair of the Foundation Board. Building on the work of my predecessor Anish Mathai, I am excited to deepen our partnership with CMC, Vellore, and reaffirm our commitment to supporting academic excellence through innovative and targeted research and education. In this role, I hope to forge closer ties with medical, nursing and allied health alumni in the U.S., to bring the full force of our experience and influence to enrich CMC’s research and education programs. During a recent visit to CMC, I met with Sunil Chandy, Director, and Nihal Thomas, Vice-Principal for Research, to continue our conversation about bringing CMC’s increasingly complex research activity under the aegis of a new Clinical and Translational Research Center. The vast and unique patient population in and around CMC, together with dedicated faculty; well-established Institutional Review Boards; and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities; offer an unparalleled opportunity for CMC to expand clinical, basic science and translational research. Innovative, locally-developed and cost-effective diagnostics, therapeutics and vaccines are just a few of the transformative outcomes possible through these efforts. As a first step in the development of this Center, the Foundation has initiated support for a Research Coordinator position (see Page 5). Endowed Research Chairs and Fellowships, participation by CMC faculty at local and international Research Conferences; as well as expanded Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Student Research opportunities at CMC; are all part of the Foundation’s long-term vision for this project. In the field of education, we will continue to support Faculty Fellowships and Scholarships, which provide opportunities for CMC physicians, nurses and allied health professionals to pursue additional training in leading medical institutions and universities across the U.S.
We would like to expand this program to include similar options for junior faculty. In addition, the Foundation is hoping to support the development of an enhanced Bioethics Training Curriculum for undergraduate medical students.
Ranjit Mathew, MD (‘68) is a Gastroenterologist at the Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, GA. A graduate of CMC in Vellore, Dr. Mathew is fluent in both English and Spanish, and has practiced medicine for more than 37 years.
William Scudder is the President and Owner of Scudder Financial Communications, a financial marketing and communications firm established in 1991. He is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology and served in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Mr. Scudder is a member of the Scudder Association, which honors the legacy of, among others, Dr. Ida S. Scudder, founder of CMC.
Philip Ninan, MD (‘69) is an Affiliate Professor of Psychiatric Medicine at Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University. He recently retired from his position as Vice President, Clinical Sciences in the Primary Care Business Unit of Pfizer Inc. Dr. Ninan is a graduate of CMC in Vellore, and the recipient of numerous honors and awards.

Christine Wanke, MD, is a celebrated researcher and Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine (Boston, MA), the Departments of Medicine and Public Health and Community Medicine; the Division of Geographic Medicine and Infectious Diseases; and the Division of Nutrition and Infection. She is also Professor of Medicine at Brown University in Providence, RI, and a recently appointed Professor at CMC in Vellore.

he U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) American Schools and Hospital Abroad (ASHA) program funds projects that demonstrate American ideas and practices in education and health care in developing countries. Since 1982, the Foundation and CMC have partnered to secure $10.6 million in USAID/ASHA funding for capital projects ranging from construction of the ASHA Education Building to the acquisition of state-of-the-art medical equipment. For a little over five years the Foundation has encouraged donations specifically for excellence in research at CMC. pain, numbness in the legs, and can lead to ulcers and amputation. In my fellowship at KUMC I am working with Dr. Patricia Kluding,* to study the impact of sedentary habits among people with DPN. I hope to gain funding to continue my study with Dr. Kluding after I return to CMC, ultimately to help patients worldwide improve management of the diabetic foot. As part of my fellowship I also take classes in clinical research; I shadow a Nurse Practitioner at the Cray Diabetes Center; and guest lecture. I was able to present a poster at the Endocrine Symposium organized by the Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City entitled: The impact of… footwear on the health the Asian Indians living with Diabetes I am grateful to Dr. Mani M Mani for his efforts to maintain this program. The program director, Dr. Lisa Stenho Bittel, Chair of Physiotherapy has given her personal time to help nurture my projects; the program coordinator, Janette Williams ensured that we felt at home.
A Fellow at Kansas University Medical Center Mercy Jesudoss is a 2008 graduate of the College of Nursing’s Master’s program; she is currently on the faculty of both the CON and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Department at the Medical College. This fall she is a Modale Scholar pursuing a 20-week research fellowship at the Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC), Kansas City, Kansas. This fellowship was established by Dr. Mani Mani (‘55), professor emeritus at KUMC and former Chair of the Foundation’s Board, to train Junior Faculty in research methodology. In 2001, I began my nursing career as a Diabetes Nurse Educator in CMC’s Dept. of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism. As part of my post-graduate work I became interested in Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN), a condition that affects a great number of diabetics; it causes persistent

initiatives here in the United States that tie in with CMC’s work. Since 2009, Drs. K. George Chandy and Susan Zachariah’s (‘71) church, Laguna Presbyterian, has been a monthly contributor to CMC, most recently for the Chittoor campus. Rev. Jerry Tankersley, Pastor of the congregation, invited Kate and Rita to present to members after Sunday worship. A warm and engaged group, inspired by George and Susan’s gracious support, will propose that their monthly gifts be redirected to fund RUHSA expansion; many expressed interest in visiting CMC. George and Susan, passionate parents, friends, researchers and CMC alumni, opened their home, their dinner table and their church to the Foundation; all accepted with gratitude! A final visit was made to the home of Dr. Arputharaj Kore (‘73), where in true Vellore fashion, an extraordinary family meal was served, stories were shared, prayers were offered, and warm wishes traded. The Kore family is deeply committed to CMC, to the mission churches and to service to the poor at RUHSA. At each of the homes visited, important themes of education, research and alumni support reconfirmed the Foundation’s Ajit Varki priorities.
Last month, Dr. Rita Isaac (‘76), Director of the Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) was invited to California to deliver a talk on the cervical cancer screening work that was described in our last issue. Kate Guenther, President of the Foundation, took advantage of Rita’s visit and scheduled meetings with several CMC alumni and donors in the LA area. Kate had the pleasure of dining with Drs. Ajit and Nissi Varki (’68), both of whom are researchers at UCSD, and Dr. Luke Cheriyan (‘67 ) who was visiting from Cleveland. The conversation was almost exclusively about research – the importance of keeping high priority status on research at CMC; ways to support and train young CMC professionals in research skills; and the status of the Foundation’s ongoing initiative to fund a Research Coordinator position at CMC. While enjoying a fabulous Nepalese dinner with Jacob and Shirley Korula (‘65) in Pasadena, alumni relations was the dominant topic. The Foundation is very serious about improving the substance of alumni relations in the U.S.—in partnership with GOTC planners and of course CMC. The goal is to do a better job leveraging alumni talent in the U.S. for the benefit of CMC students, current faculty, and alumni

Scudder would have been 143 years old. She is still missed by many who remember her at CMC GOTC 2014 is happening soon! CMC Relief Efforts for Typhoon Victims... As you know, Super Typhoon Haiyan has killed
thousands, destroyed entire cities and swept away villages in central Philippines. In response to this disaster CMC will send a volunteer team of 10-12 doctors & nurses to the Philippines to treat victims and assist in the prevention of infectious diseases common after such disasters. This beautiful note of thanks arrived the next day: “Dear Kate, I want you to know how much I, and the Board, appreciate your time and talent Saturday evening. It meant a lot to all of us to hear how one woman’s love could affect so many. It is a story many of us in the Association are familiar with but one that can’t be told too often. Especially now that the work Aunt Ida started has begun to achieve critical mass. What was merely impressive 20 years ago, appears today in scope and reach, to be a true practical miracle. I hope that we may work together to reach out to the thousands of other Scudders who have not had the pleasure of hearing Ida’s story and bring them back into the “spiritual family” to further Ida Scudder’s cause. That’s the expected weight of a healthy 7-month-old! But because his parents brought him into see the extraordinary research and healthcare team at CMC’s Low Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU), in the slum of Old Town, his type of malnutrition was diagnosed, treated, and cared for. He was saved! The photo at right was taken a short time ago where we see a healthy, vibrant 9-year-old Mubarek. Today he goes to school and plays with his friends like any other normal healthy 9-year-old...thanks to the talented doctors, nurses and technicians of the LCECU, who intervened as a inter-disciplinary, holistic team of physical and mental health experts.
