A workshop on Developing a Protocol for a Cochrane Systematic Review was conducted by Cochrane South Asia, Psychiatry Unit-II, from June 13th to17th, 2016 at the CREST Hall, Centre for Stem Cell Research, Bagayam. A total of 35 participants availed this workshop, which included 5 participants from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, 4 from Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) Pondicherry, 2 from Manipal Campus, 5 from CMC Vellore, and few other participants from different parts of the country, remarkably from Pune, Delhi, Shimla and Kolkata. There was also one candidate from the Government Theni Medical College. Participants were given hands-on training in using various Software like Revman, Zotero, Gradepro and developing search strategies for various medical databases. The objective was to develop the skill of writing a Cochrane or a Non-Cochrane systematic review. Dr. Prathap, Tharyan, Professor, Psychiatry Unit-II, Dr. Thambu David, Professor, General Medicine, Dr. Anand Viswanathan, Senior Research Scientist, Cochrane South Asia, Mr. Richard Kirubakaran, Research Scientist, Cochrane South Asia and Mr. Jabez Paul, Information Specialist, Cochrane South Asia, were the resource persons at this workshop. The next protocol Development Workshop for a Cochrane Systematic Review has been scheduled to take place between September 12th and 16th, 2016. The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Low Cost Effective Care Unit jointly implemented a Project ‘Helmet’ in light of the alarming statistic from the WHO report (Global status report on road safety in 2015) that 1.25 million road traffic deaths occur every year and 3 out of 4 road deaths are among men. Furthermore, 49% of all road traffic deaths are among pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and although low and middle- income countries have only half of the world’s vehicles, they have 90% of the world’s road traffic deaths.
Project ‘Helmet’ was initiated in 2014 to sensitise young motorists on injury prevention and safe driving practices; to make them wary of the magnitude of such accidents. Through the 80 half-day sessions conducted for 601 students of colleges in Vellore thus far, it was discovered that 80% of the students drive two-wheelers without a license or a helmet! They are therefore taken around the physiotherapy and occupational therapy halls to witness patients suffering the aftermath of traffic injuries. There are also sessions where victims of road accidents share their experience for the benefit of the youth. The relatable approach employed in these workshops has reflected in the appreciative response from the participants, who admit to have never fully given thought to the impact of accidents in the lives of victims and also their loved ones.

Upcoming Events The Chaplaincy Department will be conducting two Staff Retreats in month of July 2016, both based on the theme 'Growing Together in Christ' Ephesians 4:15. • An 'All Staff Retreat in English' will be held on 10th July 2016, at New Chapel (Exam Hall Building), Bagayam Campus. Retirements Mr. R. Jayasekaran, Sr. Sel. GR.I Pharmacist, Department of Pharmacy, retired on 3rd June, 2016 after 38 years of dedicated service to the institution. Mr. Jayasekaran joined as a student in 1975 and completed his Diploma in Pharmacy and joined as a Junior Pharmacist in 1977. He worked in various divisions of Pharmacy in different levels - Dispening and Manufacturing areas. He was the supervisor of Out Patient Pharmacy from 2002 to 2006, playing an important role in streamlining the system. His elder daughter completed her BOT in CMC and works overseas. His second daughter, Mrs. Vidya, completed M.Sc. Nursing in CMC and works at PIMS, Pondicherry. His son, Mr. Diwakar works as a Marketing Executive in Chennai. Mr. D. Mohan, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, College of Nursing Community Health, retired on 7th June, 2016 after 43 years of service to the institution. He has two sons and a daughter. His elder son, Mr. Saravanan is a Hospital Attendant in C.S.S.D and his younger son, Mr. Sankar is a Hospital Attendant in 'S' Ward. The CMC community wishes them well, as they move ahead to another phase of their lives, thankful for all their services to the institution.
