Regional Symposium and Refresher Course for Pharmacists Then the Lord will appear over them; his arrow will flash like lightning. The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet; he will march in the storms of the south, and the Lord Almighty will shield them. The Lord their God will save them on that day as the flock of his people. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown.
The Department of Pharmacy Services organised a Regional Symposium and Refresher Course for Pharmacists, themed 'Update in Pharmacy Practice Focusing Patient Care' on 28th May, 2016, at the Jacob Chandy Hall, Paul Brand Building, in association with Tamilnadu Pharmacy Council, Chennai. More than 108 delegates, including hospital pharmacists (Mission Hospitals, Railways Hospitals), community pharmacists, and members from the Drugs and Chemists Association, faculty and students from pharmacy colleges actively participated in the symposium. It was opened with prayer by Chaplain, Mr. Paul Ravikumar, following which, Dr. Winsley Rose, Associate Head, Pharmacy Services, welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. Dr. S. Annadurai, Professor, Pharmacy Services, and Organising Secretary of this symposium, then highlighted the purpose of the workshop. The Chief Guests, Sh. Abdul Khader, Director of Drugs Control (Tamilnadu), Chennai, and Dr. Ajithadas Aruna, Joint Director of Medical Education (Pharmacy), Chennai, inaugurated the symposium, along with other dignitaries and delivered the key-note address. Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director, Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, Dr. Judy Ann John, VicePrincipal (AHS) and Sr. Florence Segaran, Deputy Nursing Superintendent, gave the felicitations. The Officers of Tamilnadu State Drug Control Administration, Mr. Sivanandham, Deputy Director of Drugs Control, Chennai, and the Drugs Inspectors of Vellore zone, Mrs. P. Mahalakshmi and Mr. Karthikeyan were also present during the inaugural ceremony.

The sessions featured presentations by external experts from pharmacy academia, Pharmacovigilance programme of India, and Faculty from CMC. In addition, an interactive panel discussion was arranged between the audience and the panel of external and internal experts. The positive feedback from the delegates Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved members of the families at this time of grief and loss. came with a demand for more two-day symposiums.
Clinical Virology Programmes Hands-on Workshop The Department of Clinical Virology organised the first Hands-on Workshop in Molecular Viral Diagnostics from 6th to 9th June, 2016. The workshop was aimed at imparting knowledge and hands-on training to candidates, in various molecular techniques for the diagnosis and monitoring of different viral infections. Since the workshop was hands-on, participation had to be limited to 20 members. The faculty of Microbiology and MD postgraduates from 12 different medical colleges, including final-year Postgraduates of CMC, received training in nucleic acid extraction, conventional PCR, RFLP and sequencing. There were sessions on trouble-shooting of different assays, with importance given to quality assurance in the laboratory and clinic-virological case discussions. The workshop was awarded 30 credit points by the Continuing Education Programme accreditation committee of The Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai, proving to be a commendable effort.
Continuing Medical Education in Geriatric Rehabilitation The Physiotherapy Unit, Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Geriatrics organised the first ever CME on 4th June, 2016 titled Geriatric Rehabilitation. The aim was to sensitise physiotherapists in and around Vellore to the burgeoning problems faced by the elderly, and how they can help lighten the burden. The chaplain, Mr. Rajdeep Samal, opened the inaugural ceremony with a word of prayer. Mr. Andrew Babu, Head, Physiotherapy, welcomed the gathering, following which all the dignitaries on the dais unanimously agreed that the greying population was increasing and this particular venture would go a long way in educating physiotherapists. Dr. Prasad Mathews, in his talk, highlighted medical problems in the elderly, which would have an impact on rehabilitation. Osteoporosis in the elderly was extensively covered by Dr. K.G. Gopinath. The initial geriatric musculoskeletal assessment by Mr. Samuel Vinod was followed by a talk on frailty and strength training by Ms. Merlyn Tilak. The importance of balance and co-ordination was summed up by Mr. Lenny Vasanthan. Mr. Samuel Kirubakaran then brought out the impact of exercise on cognition. A quiz comprising MCQs and Video rounds and two hands-on workshops - Falls in the Elderly by Dr. SurekhaV. and Cognitive Assessment in the elderly by Dr. Benny Paul Wilson received an encouraging response.
Radiotherapy acquires Equinox 80 Telecobalt Machine The new Telecobalt Machine ‘Equinox 80’ acquired by the Department of Radiotherapy was dedicated on 30th May, 2016. The programme began with prayer by the Chaplain Rev. Paul Ravi, which was followed by a song by the staff and a Bible portion read by Dr.JebaKarunya Rami Reddy. Dr. Simon Pavamani, Professor, welcomed the gathering. Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director, congratulated the staff of Radiotherapy as well as all the sections of the Engineering Department, who were involved in the smooth installation of the machine and hoped it would benefit a lot of patients. The Principal, Dr. Alfred Job Daniel also commended the department for their good work. Dr. Simon Pavamani, on behalf of the Medical Superintendent, Dr. C.E. Eapen, felicitated the Department Staff for the smooth transition of work flow and for working tirelessly with two Radiotherapy machines instead of three to treat patients during this period. He mentioned that this machine would be useful for providing cost effective and simple radiotherapy treatment. Dr. Selvamani, Head, Radiotherapy, thanked all who helped make this possible, especially Dr. Subhashini John, former Head, as well as the medical physicists Dr. Paul Ravindran and Dr. Rabi Raja Singh, for initiating the acquisition of this machine. She then inaugurated the machine, as Dr. Rabi Raja Singh, briefly explained the mechanism of Equinox 80 to the gathering.
Summer Camps for Children in the 'Jawadhi' Tribal Hills The Community Health Department and the Don Bosco Institute for Tribal Development in Jammunamarathur partnered to run educational, nutritional and health programes for the children in the hills. Support towards this was also extended by the Friends of Vellore and the departments of Child Health, Ophthalmology and Wellcome Trust Research. Together, CMC and Don Bosco established and ran 66 evening study centers in the villages, greatly reducing school drop-out rates. The Department of Community Health conducts summer camps for these children in Jawadhi hills every year with the following objectives: • To provide additional academic support to kindle interest in continuing education. • To develop a feeling of self-worth through life skill education and extracurricular activities. • To impart nutrition, life style and preventive health education. • To screen and treat children for common diseases and nutritional deficiencies. • To develop appreciation for and pride in their unique identity and culture. This year, the summer camps were conducted from 20th to 27th May in 7 centres. About 700 children attended the camps, received academic support, and were trained in life skills and arts. On all days of the camp, nutritious food was provided to the children. They were all given health check-ups run by a team of physicians, including optometrists and dentists. Children who needed further care were referred to CMC and their follow-up is being facilitated by the Community Health Department. The village leaders, parents and children eagerly participated in these camps, and expressed their appreciation of CMC and Don Bosco for running them.
Retirements Mrs. Manjula Ekambaram, Laboratory Technologist, Department of Clinical Microbiology, opted for voluntary retirement on 31st May, 2016 after 33 years of service to the institution. She joined the department in 1982 as project staff, thereafter moving to mainstream diagnostics. Her son, Dr. Santhosh Kumar is a CMC Alumnus (UG and PG) and currently works in the Department of Gastroenterology, and her daughter Mrs.Saranya, is a software engineer. Mrs. Manjula is also blessed with a grandson, Master. Sanko David. Mrs. Kalaivani, Instructor, Clinical Biochemistry, opted for voluntary retirement on 1st June, 2016, after a 38 years of dedicated service to the institution. Having joined the department in 1978 as a Clinical Biochemist Trainee, she moved up the ranks over 30 years, to become an Instructor. Kalaivani is a willing learner and hence mastered most laboratory techniques. She began her career when the lab was not yet automated and was therefore well-versed in all manual methods. In her early days, at the then small biochemistry lab, she could manage all emergency tests on her own, beyond regular duty hours. She saw the lab grow from a 200 - daily sample load handled manually, to 5,000 samples taken care of by sophisticated state of the art automation. She was also an astute teacher, who could train her juniors patiently and properly till they learnt the nuances. Kalaivani's husband runs a business in town. Her children, Anita and Aadhavan, are both Engineers, well settled in Chennai. The CMC community wishes them well, as they move ahead to another phase of their lives, thankful for all their services to the institution.

CMC's New Initiative The Missions office has been handling various requests from mission hospitals – both church-related and trust/society-run – to help revive them; and it has been an uphill task, but a rewarding one too. After much discussion, an MOU has been signed between the CSITA / CSI Synod and CMC Vellore Association, to be actively involved in reviving the over-hundredyears-old hospital at Erode for the next 25 years. Although the hospital will retain its name as CSI Hospital, Erode, it will be fully managed by CMC, Vellore. The new governing body has been formed. The CSI Hospital is situated in the centre of Erode and the city has grown around it, much like Vellore around CMC. It includes a school of nursing and a semi-urban clinic at Chennimalai. We invite clinicians, administrators, nurses, allied health workers, community health workers and chaplains to join us in the rejuvenation and support of this hospital, mainly for the benefit of those who have less access to healthcare.
