Christian Medical College, Vellore Celebrating a Centenary of Medical Education 1918-2018
I
t was on August 12, 1918, that the first batch of Licentiate Medical Students was admitted to CMC. Imagine for a moment what Ida Scudder might have felt- pride, gratitude, nervousness.....A hundred years have passed since then, and we step into 2018, Christian Medical College Vellore looks back with gratitude and looks ahead with hope and expectation. Countless students have trained in the portals of the Institution, carrying with them more than mere knowledge of Anatomy or Pathology, Surgery or Medicine. Countless teachers have imbibed them with a sense of medicine as a calling. And so many of them, teachers and students alike, have responded, in their own ways, to the ‘three knocks’ on the doors of their lives. To commemorate this landmark occasion, the Institution is organising a series of meaningful events. We begin with a Service of Thanksgiving scheduled for Sunday, January 14, 2018 in the Scudder Auditorium at 6.00 p.m. Dr. Kuruvilla Varkey, former Chairman of the CMC Council will be the Speaker at this Service. On January 19, 2018, the Centenary Celebrations will be officially inaugurated during the Council meetings. This programme will be held in Scudder Auditorium. A Coffee Table book on CMC, titled ‘Healing for the Nations’ will be released on the occasion.A Centenary Run between the CMC Hospital Campus and the CMC Bagayam Campus is scheduled for January 26, 2018. This is being organised by the Department of Radiology. Further details regarding the event will be circulated separately. Throughout the year, the Institution will be inviting eminent personalities from different walks of life under the Luminary Lecture Series. The aim of this series of lectures is to listen and learn from people, who by their work and life, have empowered and transformed societies, have contributed to our national life or are role models for the youth. Some invited personalities include Shri Bezwada Wilson (Ramon Magsaysay Awardee 2016), Dr. Gopalkrishna Gandhi (Former Governor of West Bengal and the grandson of both Mahatma Gandhi and Shri C. Rajagoplachari), Mr. Romulus Whitaker (Founder of the Madras Crocodile Bank), Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (Sarod virtuoso), Mr. Rahul Dravid(Cricket), Dr. Tessy Thomas (Scientist) etc. The first Lecture will be delivered by Shri Bezwada Wilson on Febrauary 28, 2018 at 6 PM in Scudder Auditorium.

Apart from these events, we hope to hold small health camps throughout the year in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Vellore. ‘Living our Legacy’, a column by Mrs. Usha Jesudasan will feature twice a month in the CMC Newsline. This thought provoking series will focus on the experiences and challenges that our Founder and other stalwarts faced, and draw meaning and encouragement for us in the present. The Alumni Association will also be organising special events, including a Photographic Exhibition, around the Alumni Reunion scheduled for August 9 – 11, 2018. The Association is also compiling a series of write- ups on various features of campus life and significant contributions of CMC.

The Institution will also be hosting two National Conferences with Medical Education as their theme- the Conference on aligning the National Health Policy with Medical Education is scheduled for June 2018 as part of the Centenary Year celebrations, while the Conference on Leadership in Medical Education will take place in October 2018.

A dedicated website for the Centenary Year will be launched by January 15, 2018.We invite you to participate in these programmes as well as to uphold the planning and organisation of the Centenary Year in your prayers.Let this be a time of remembrance for all that has been; a time to remember the many teacherspioneers and stalwarts- who have shaped the lives of generations of students, and a time to thank God for the wondrous way in 1 which He has led and continues to lead our beloved institution. Another milestone to the institution from the Department of Cardiology The Department of Cardiology added yet another milestone on 1st December 2017 when a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure using a balloon expandable valve was done for the first time at Christian Medical College hospital, Vellore by a team of doctors led by Dr. John Jose E. (Professor, Cardiology Unit II).TAVI- was first performed in CMC in January 2017 by Drs. John Jose, Sujith Chacko and Subhransghu Dey, when a self-expanding valve was deployed in a patient with severe aortic stenosis. The present procedure was performed by a team that included Dr. John Jose E. (primary operator), Dr. Subhrangshu Dey (first assistant; Associate Professor, Cardiology-II), Dr. Sharath Babu (second assistant; Assistant Professor) and Dr. Paul V. George (Professor & Head, Cardiology unit II). The core implantation team was supported by Dr. Sirish, Dr. John Roshan(Cardiac Electrophysiology), Dr. Sudhakar P. and Dr.Gopal Ghosh (Assistant Professors, Cardiology). Anaesthesia was provided by Dr. Rahul Pillai, Dr. Kirubakaran and Dr. Raj Sahajanandan and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Unit (Dr.Vinayak Shukla, Dr. Roy Thankachan, Dr. Korah) provided back up support. The patient was discharged with a much better cardiac status within a weeks’ time after the procedure. The heart team is thankful to Dr. Sunil Chandy, Dr. Oommen George (Head, Cardiology), and other senior faculty for their support and encouragement. Special thanks is extended to the Departmant of Radiology (Dr.Aparna andDr.Elizabeth), Department of Neurology (Dr. Ajith Sivadasan) and Department of Vascular surgery (Dr.Prabhu, Dr.Edwin .S) for their inter-departmental assistance and co-operation.
'EXCEL' – A programme to develop efficient leaders The Department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training & Development along with the Missions Department and CME Department conducted the “1st Excel – Empowered to Excel as Efficient Leaders” a programme for medical doctors, nurses and health professionals from CMC and other mission hospitals on 16th& 17th October 2017. This programme was designed with a hope to empower young medical professionals to excel as efficient team members by enhancing their leadership and managerial skills, required to run hospitals as per current statutory norms in the country. The programme began with prayer and message by Rev. Lalbiaksanga Pachuau, followed by an inauguration by Dr. J.V. Peter, Director. Felicitations were shared by Dr. Anna Pulimood, Principal, Dr. Prasad Mathews, the Medical Superintendent, Dr. SukriaNayak, Associate Director Missions, Dr. Sam David ,Missions Network Consultant and Mr. Devendra Chowdhury, the Resource Person. The sessions during the programme was effectively handled by trained and qualified resource persons on a variety of topics which were highly informative. Dr. J.V. Peter, Director, led a power packed session on “leading people and managing problems”. Mr. Devendra Chowdary, Training Consultant, Bangalore took an encouraging session on “Communication”. Mr. Pinto, Deputy Treasurer, and Mr. Hugh Skeil, Manager Development Office jointly handled the session on “Financial Management”. Dr. Lallu Joseph, Quality Manager, took an energetic session on “Quality in the area of healthcare delivery, standards and accreditation - Raising the bar”. Dr. Anbu Suresh, Medical Superintendent, SMH Ranipet took a motivating session on “Strategic Human Resource – Operational Efficiency – A case study”. Dr. B.J. Prashantham, Director, Christian Counselling Centre took an impactful session on “Effective Interpersonal Relationships”. Mr. Samuel Abraham, Sr. Law Consultant, took an interactive information filled session on “Legal requirements to deal with patients in Hospitals – Few points to prevent patients litigations”. Mr. Joseph Selvaraj, Manager and In-Charge, Stores took a detailed session on “Materials Management”. Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Sr. Manager & Head, department of Hospital Management Studies and Staff Training & Development handled two thought provoking session sessions on “Strategic overview of the major changes in the healthcare environment nationally and internationally – A need to change” and “Leadership – Styles & Grids” and was assisted by Ms. Sonia Valas X, Officer (Admin.). The programme was well appreciated and awarded with 20 CME credit points from the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University.

Departments of Paediatrics and Paediatric Nursing celebrated Adolescent Health Week from 27 th November, to 2 nd December, 2017, under the auspices of Indian Academy of Paediatrics. As part of the celebrations health education programmes were organised in the wards and in government and government aided schools. Interactive sessions were held on topics such as adolescent nutrition, sleep, exercise, pubertal changes, adolescent brain, substance abuse, road safety, cybersafety, sexual health and sexual abuse. On 2 nd December 2017, a meeting was organized in the Hope House, by Mr.Ruby Nakka where Ms. Esther Kanth conducted a health education programme for the children and adolescents residing in Hope House. A talk was also delivered by Dr. Mona Basker on common adolescent health problems, 2 followed by a discussion with lay leaders from the community working in Jawadhi Hills and urban slums of Vellore.
First Off-site Blood Collection Facility Inaugurated CMC’s first Off-site blood collection facility at the CMC Hospital Annexe, RTO Office road, Sathuvachari was dedicated on 21 st December 2017. Dr. Rohit Amrithanand, Deputy Medical Superintendent, inaugurated the facility. The facility will be open on week days (Monday to Saturday) between 7.00 am to 11.00 am for registered CMC patients to submit routine blood and other samples that have been ordered by their doctor and paid for during their visit to the hospital. Samples will be transported in insulated containers to CMC for testing by the respective departments. The patients can visit the hospital after giving samples to see the doctor.
CSE on “Recent Advances, complications and challenges in Renal Replacement Therapy & Non Reconstructible Infra-inguinal Peripheral Arterial Disease” The Department of Vascular Surgery successfully conducted a Continuing Surgical Education (CSE) titled “Recent Advances, complications and challenges in Renal Replacement Therapy & Non Reconstructible Infra-inguinal Peripheral Arterial Disease” from 17th to 18th November 2017 at C.K. Job Hall, Paul Brand Building. Professor Shervanthi Homer-Vanniasinkam from Leeds General Infirmary-UK delivered a lecture which stressed that treatment should be - Affordable, Accessible and Appropriate, for patients. The CSE received 10 credit points from the Tamil Nadu Dr.MGR Medical University and was attended by over 100 delegates.
Congratulations! • Dr. Vikram Mathews, Professor & Head of Haematology and Associate Director (Admin) has been recommended to be elected as a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. • Dr. Sudipta Dhar Chowdhury, Professor, Department of Gastroenterology received the First Prize for Endoscopic Video presentation paper entitled “EUS Guided Gastrojejunostomy for Afferent Loop Syndrome” at SGEI (Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India) session during Indian Society of Gastroenterology Conference 2017 held at Bhubaneshwar on 17th December, 2017. • The following participants’ received prizes at the 44 th National Conference of Association of Clinical Biochemistry held at King George Medical University, Lucknow on December 2017. Mr. Joseph Dian Bondu, Lecturer was awarded the “ACBI -IFCC Task Force Young Scientist Award” for paper presentation. Mrs. Janani Iswarya, Lecturer received the Best Poster Award titled “HbA1C Measurement in Sodium Fluoride EDTA tube (A single tube for measuring HbA1C and Glucose)”. • Dr. Deekshith R.M., second year Fellow in Implant Otology, Department of ENT unit IV, received the first runner up prize for video presentation titled ‘Subtotal Petrosectomy with blind sac closure in left congenital cholesteatoma of petrous apex extension’ at AOI midterm national conference (AOIMIDCON 2017) held at Mangaluru on the lst to 3rd December 2017".
