Every New Year brings with it new ideas, new challenges and new promises. This coming year 2018, is special as we remember God’s faithfulness as we celebrate the centenary year in medical education. From the humble beginnings of “The Missionary Medical School” for women in 1918, God has blessed and enlarged the medical mission work in the country.

As we stand at the threshold of a new year and a new phase in the life of the institution, it is appropriate for us to look back and give thanks to our God. “This is what the Lord says; ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls’” (Jeremiah 6:16). It would be good to join together to “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever” (Psalm 136:1).

This time also provides us with an opportunity to look inwards. The psalmist cried out, “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”(Psalm 139: 23,24). As we look inwards and introspect we would be enabled to be moulded as vessels of honour.

Finally, it is a time to look forward. In these times of uncertainty and difficulty, we can be encouraged by the quote from Minnie Haskin’s poem, “The Gate of the Year” read by King George VI on a New Year eve, “I said to the man who stood at the Gate of the Year, ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied, ‘Go out into the darkness, and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be better than light, and safer than a known way.” The Lord who has led us thus far will continue to do so in the coming year. “ For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). What words of assurance! Can we have a better promise to begin this year!

Educational Initiatives
Workshop on “HIV/AIDS: Nursing Perspectives” The Department of Medical Nursing and CNE & Research (College of Nursing) in collaboration with the Department of Infections Disease conducted a workshop titled “HIV/AIDS: Nursing perspective” on 11th December 2017. During the Inaugural session Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing, Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Divya Doodhore Assistant Professor, Department of Infectious Diseases and Dr. Shirley David, HOD, Department of Medical Nursing gave their felicitations. The sessions included discussion on topics such as ‘Disease Burden, Pathophysiology & Diagnosis, Antiretroviral therapy, PEP, counseling, Nursing care and infection control. Four skill stations namely antiretroviral therapy, usage of PPE, management of exposure to eye and mucous membrane and mangament of Needle stick injury were organized. The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council awarded 7 credit hours for this workshop.
Professor Benjamin M. Pulimood Oration The “10 th Professor Benjamin M Pulimood” Oration was conducted by the Departments of Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine on 01st December 2017. Dr. Thambu David, Professor & Head of Medicine Unit-II delivered the welcome address followed by a speech on the life of Dr. Benjamin M. Pulimood and the history of BMP oration by Dr. O.C. Abraham, Professor& Head of Medicine Unit-IV. Felicitations were offered by the Medical Superintendent Dr. Prasad Mathews and Principal Dr. Anna Pulimood. The 10 th BMP oration was delivered by Professor Christopher Parry, Honorary Research Fellow, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK, Honorary Senior Lecturer, Institute of Infection and Global Health, Consultant Microbiologist, Liverpool Clinical Laboratories and Royal Liverpool University Hospital on the topic “Typhoid Fever - Adapting Bench to Bedside”. Professor Parry is credited with unlocking the genome of typhoid bacillus and has been involved in various trials for development of a rapid diagnostic test for typhoid. He has also been instrumental in putting together a consortium from low and middle income countries for appropriate treatment of typhoid.

The Department of Infectious Diseases in collaboration with the Departments of Wellcome Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology hosted the “Eleventh International Short Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine” from 20th November to 02nd December 2017 at IDTRC; a two week long course with lectures, clinical bedside session and laboratory practicals in bacteriology, virology, parasitology and mycology. International faculty from the University of Liver pool UK, McGill University Canada, Haukeland University and Center of Geographic Medicine & Tropical Diseases Norway, Ludwig-Maximillians University Munich Germany, Mount Auburn Hospital Cambridge, Massachusetts HarvardMedical School, Albert Einstein college of Medicine New York and faculty of CMC from the Departments of Wellcome Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Virology, Child Health III, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Dermatology, SLRTC Karigiri, CHAD and Infectious Diseases contributed actively to the learning process. A travel medicine workshop was also organised on 1st December, 2017. With travel emerging as an essential trend and people being more adventurous, this equips the traveler against risk. Relevant data can be accessed from travel networks like geo-sentinel and others. 2
World Blood Donor Day observed The Department of Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology conducted the valedictory ceremony of the World Blood Donor Day and the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day on 17th November, 2017. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Joy Mammen, Professor and Head. Dr. Dolly Daniel, Professor welcomed the gathering and Dr. Sukesh Nair, Professor introduced the concept of the Voluntary Blood Donor, followed by a felicitation by Dr. Ebor Jacob, Deputy Medical Superintendent and vote of thanks by Dr. Nitty S Mathews, Assistant Professor. The guests of honour were Mr. Joshua and Mr. Jayakaran frequent donors and donor motivators. The celebrations began on 14th July, 2017, at a voluntary blood donation camp organized in Venkateshwara Polytechnic College, Adukkamparai, Vellore followed by a Tree planting ceremony in CMC medical college campus, Bagayam. Various competitions on the topic “Improving Repeat Voluntary Blood Donation” were held to create awareness about “Non- remunerated Voluntary Blood Donation” and “repeat voluntary donations”. The prize winners of the competitions are given below: Poster competition: Ms.V. Kalaivani (11 th Std) Shrishti Vidyasharam and Mr. Murali Manohar (12th Std) Krishnaswamy Mudaliyar Hr. Sec. School won the first prize. Essay competition: Ms. Sushmitha, B.Sc. Biochemistry,Auxilium College, and Ms. Ashwini, B.Sc. Chemistry, DKM College, won the first prize. Slogan Competition: Ms. Christa Joycelin, Staff Nurse Neuro ICU and Ms. K Revathi, Staff Nurse Paediartic Casuality won the First prize. Skit competition: College of Nursing Group B won the first prize, Reproductive Medicine Unit, the second prize and, OT Anaesthesia won the third prize.
Retirement Mr. R. Samuel Sargunar, Senior Sel. Gr.II Technician, Department of Biostatistics retired on 8th November, 2017 after 34 years of dedicated service to the institution. His wife Mrs. P. Susheela, is the Principal of College Hill Nursery School. They are blessed with two children, Mr. S.Alan John and Ms. S.Kerenhappuch Susan. CMC community is thankful for his years of dedicated service and wishes him a blessed retirement.
