of the plans ahead. Over the last one year, refurbishment of several areas of college and hospital have been done. Nearly 58 new projects were implemented and 18 similar projects are in the pipeline. The two major events to unfold would be Salary Revision as well as the International Consultation later in 2016. Shortly the new inpatient facility would be ready for use in Chittoor. The Director earmarked 2016 as the ‘year of momentum’ and greater sense of co-operation to move the huge projects ahead.

UPD ATE IN C ARDIO PULMONAR Y PHY SIC AL THERAPY UPDA PULMONARY PHYSIC SICAL The Physiotherapy Unit, Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Cardio Thoracic Surgery organized a Continuing Medical Education conference on January 9, 2016 titled “Updates in Cardio-Pulmonary Physical Therapy”. A total of 162 candidates including staff and students from various Physiotherapy Colleges and Hospitals in and around Tamil Nadu participated in the CME. The Programme started with a word of prayer by the Chaplain, Rev. Rajdeep Samal. Mr. Andrew Babu, Head of Physiotherapy Unit welcomed the gathering. The felicitation addresses were given by Dr. Alfred Job Daniel, Principal, Dr. Vinayak Shukla, Head, Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, Dr. Raji Thomas, Head, PMR and Dr. Judy John, Vice Principal (AHS). The need for Physiotherapy after Cardiac and Pulmonary surgeries was highlighted by Dr. Madhu Philip, Professor and Head, Cardio Thoracic Surgery Unit-I and Dr. Roy Gnanamuthu, Professor from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery; The importance of Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation was specially emphasized by Mr. Abraham Babu, Assistant Professor of Physiotherapy, Manipal University; Mr. Lenny Vasanthan, Lecturer, Physiotherapy, CMC gave a talk on ‘Early mobilization in the ICU; Dr. Fiddy Davis, Associate Professor (PT) from Manipal University spoke on the basics of Exercise Prescription’; Dr.Sundar Kumar, Assistant Professor (PT), MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bangalore delivered a talk on ‘Health Promotion and Physical activity’. This CME was accredited by The Tamil Nadu, Dr. MGR Medical University with 10 Credit points under category II. CAMPUS ACTIVITIES The Aadhyavikas Creche and Playgroup facility at the CMC Kagithapattrai campus was inaugurated by the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy on January 8, 2016. The Director in his speech said that Creche was a felt need of the campus residents and he was happy that the Campus association had taken the initiative to develop the facility.With the help of the administration, the KPTR Creche committee had taken up the project and modeled it on similar facilities in the hospital and college campuses. The CMC Engineering Department had carried out infrastructure planning and development work. The MBBS Alumni Batch of 1967 had adopted the Creche as their special project and supported the cost of establishing the facility through individual donations. The name ‘Aadhyavikas’ means ‘first development’ and was suggested by the residents of the KPTR campus. This facility is located on the ground floor of building No.62 in the Kagithapattrai campus. The Creche has areas for feeding, sleeping and activity. The infrastructure allows 15-18 children aged 4 months to 1½ years to be accommodated. The staff: child ratio is 1:3. The playgroup has 2 rooms, a classroom cum activity room and a play gym. The playgroup can accommodate 15 children. The Staff: child ratio is 1:5. Currently there are 5 children in the crèche and 11 in the playgroup who are using this facility. The timings are presently 7.45 am to 5pm for the full day care facility and 8.30 am to 12.00 noon for half day children at the playschool and this can be flexibly extended based on need. Dr. Pushpa Eapen, Dr. Sheila Snehalatha, Dr. Reuben Jesudas and Dr. Mary Vijaya represented the Alumni batch of 1967. Dr. Pushpa Eapen spoke on behalf of the Batch to convey that they were passing on the torch of their Alma Mater to the next generation through the facility. Dr. Emily spoke on behalf of the parents, appreciating. the con venience of the services provided to the campus children through the facility. She said parents felt peace of mind when they went to work because of the facility. The Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy and the Associate Director, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla extended their appreciation to all those involved in setting up this facility. The Creche and play school facility mark a step in developing campus life and community activities in the CMC Kagithapattrai campus. OBITUARY Dr. Shubhanker Mitra (Batch of 2000), Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine on January 03, 2016. Let us uphold all the bereaved members of the family and his colleagues in our prayers. “Dear Shubhanker, in your passing you held a mirror to our lives; past, present and future. We remember your love, laughter and lunacy. We pray we meet you again to see that twinkle in your eyes, to hear chuckle in your voice and to share a good laugh remembering all the good times you gave us. REACHING OUT TO THE FLOOD AFFECTED Unprecedented rains in Tamil Nadu towards the end of 2015 wreaked havoc in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Cuddalore districts. The CMC community reached out rapidly and appropriately to bring relief to some of the worst affected areas. Responding to the Director’s appeal to scale down our planned Christmas celebrations and contribute to the Disaster Relief Fund, several departments collected surprisingly large amounts, giving up on their sumptuous biriyani parties, to help the flood affected. Many employees gave voluntary donations through the payroll. Some opened their homes to relatives and acquaintances who had to leave their water-logged houses. Our first team went out to Kanchipuram on 3 rd December, loaded with clothes, medicines and other relief materials. Since then 26 multi-disciplinary teams from CMC visited parts of Chennai, Cuddalore and Kanchipuram. Relief and Health Care Camps were held in local mission hospitals, churches and community centres. More than 6000 people were reached through these camps, which also gave health education. Relief materials such as clothing, water and items of food were given away. We are planning to identify some of the significantly deprived areas to offer on-going support and help in rebuilding damaged lives. Our grateful appreciation for the commendable efforts of the Safety Cell, Directorate and the CMC Emergency Response Team in co-ordinating these outreach efforts, the members of the staff for giving generously in cash and kind and for volunteering to be part of the teams. POS T ---GRADU ATE REFRESHER COURSE (PR C) 20 16 POST GRADUA 201 The Post-Graduate Refresher Course, which is the annual CME organised and hosted by the Department of Radiodiagnosis, was held on January 8 and 9, 2016 this year. Over a hundred and forty participants from various training institutions across the country even as far away as Delhi and Ludhiana were enrolled. The highlights of this course, among others, include highly selected theory oriented lectures, practical mock exams in small groups and PACS work stations for rapid fire sessions. A wholistic approach to the final post graduate examinations including spotters, quiz, viva, case based discussions and practical tips about how to perform in the viva voce was made possible through the tireless efforts of the entire department. Our adjunct faculty, Dr. Shalini Govil and Dr. Shailesh Prabhu graced the occasion with their expertise and participation this year as well. Overall, the course was a grand success as usual and we thank God for blessing all our efforts. PR OFESSOR B.K. BA CHHA WAT TRA VEL GRANT F OR Y OUNG SCIENTIST S FFOR OR THE YEAR 20 16 PROFESSOR CHHAW TRAVEL YOUNG Late Professor B.K. Bachhawat, India's first trained neurochemist, joined the Department of Neurological Sciences in 1958, and developed one of the finest and highly rated Neurochemistry laboratories in both India and the World. For his outstanding scientific contributions, especially in the field of enzymology, Dr. Bachhawat received several honours and awards, including the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award in 1964. An Annual International Travel Grant has been instituted in his name by his friends and students, administered by the Christian Medical College, Vellore, to encourage young scientists. Dr. Surendra Nath Bhattacharyya, Principal Scientist and Head, RNA Biology Research Laboratory, Molecular Genetics Division, CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Biology, Kolkata has been awarded the Professor B.K. Bachhawat Travel Grant for Young Scientists for the year 2016.
