ochi: When George Ani Mathew, associate professor with Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, started on his 170km bicycle trip to Bengaluru to meet his brother-in-law on Sunday, he didn't know that fate would be waiting for him in the form of a rashly driven SUV at Hosur. The die-hard cyclist, who loved the long road, died on the spot after the vehicle crashed into him from behind at the Karnataka border around 5pm on the same day. Son of Dr T M Mathew, a resident of Santhi Nagar Annex in South Kalamassery, the 45-year-old surgeon had always found time for long trips amid his busy life at the hospital. Around 20 minutes prior to the accident near Hosur, George had called his brother-in-law George Jacob, saying that he had crossed the border. "Jacob was about to go and pick him from the highway when the accident occurred. The man who caused the accident due to negligent driving reportedly fled the spot. The accident occurred when he tried to overtake the cycle from the left. He was wearing safety gear, including a helmet, at the time of the mishap. He was to return to CMC with Jacob the next day to attend some scheduled surgeries," said a relative of George. "He was committed to his profession and a compassionate human being. He used to go for free medical camps in Manali http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kochi/Hediedonthepassiontrail/articleshowprint/51218151.cms
