CMC was started as a single-bedded clinic by American-born Dr. Ida Scudder, in the year 1900. Today, CMC’s network of primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary-care teaching hospitals are spread across seven campuses in and around Vellore and Andhra Pradesh.
The death of 3 teenage mothers & their babies in childbirth - in one night - propelled Ida Scudder, to train in medicine and serve in India. Now, everyday, over 50 babies are born at CMC. Page 1

Chittoor Campus To cater to the needs of the growing patient population, CMC branched out to Chittoor in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh in 2011. The Chittoor campus is located around 29 km away from the main hospital campus.
The campus has five operation theatres and till date, more than 10,000 surgeries have been performed on patients from Chittoor district, the surrounding States and neighbouring countries. The campus offers comprehensive medical care to patients under 26 speciality departments, and a vibrant community outreach programme. Over the last year there has been a significant growth in patient numbers more than 1,30,000 per annum.

Kannigapuram Campus The CMC Vellore Kannigapuram Campus, a new 1500-bedded hospital which will be home to a Level 1 Trauma Care Centre is the latest and biggest extension of CMC. Though the hospital is not yet functional, its wards were opened fo admiit COVID patients. Apart from this, a nurse-managed outreach clinic beside the campus has been offering healthcare to the local populace.

CMC's strength in education is the excellent interaction between faculty and students, its high faculty-to-student ratio, and the large number of patients that flock to the hospital. All these took a terrible hit in 2020. The transition from on-site to online classes was challenging. The Department of Distance Education, started in 2004, partnered in the effort by drawing on its experience in online teaching. The Medical Education Department was involved in training faculty on best practices for online teaching. The Curriculum Office played a pivotal role as a hub for planning. Before long, online classes became the new norm. CMC offers more than 200 courses, including 11 in Distance Education, 20 in Nursing, 43 in the Allied Health Sciences, 134 in Medical Sciences and 5 M.Sc courses. At the UG level, CMC takes in 100 MBBS, 200 nursing and around 220 AHS students a year.

Allied Health Science Courses From 1903, when Dr. Ida Scudder trained local women as compounders, there has been continuous upgrading of in-service training for certificate, diploma and degree-level AHS courses. The year 2011, in particular, saw a significant increase in the number of courses.

Today, CMC runs 19 UG, 12 PG Diploma and 12 Diploma courses in the Allied Health Sciences, ranging from Medical Record Science to Hospital Sterilisation Technology.
It all started with nurses CMC opened India’s first College of Nursing when it started the graduate nursing course in 1946. The Lower Grade Nursing Course for girls began even earlier - in 1909. The nursing pioneers, along with CMC’s founder Dr. Ida Scudder, used to visit schools throughout South India to inspire girls to study nursing after their schooling. Today, the nursing courses in CMC are much sought after.
In 2004, College of Nursing was designated as a WHO collaborating centre for Nursing and Midwifery development, one of two centres in India. It has also been given a 5-star rating by the National Assessment & Accreditation Council and is a study centre for the National Ph.D. Consortium.
Nursing courses The College of Nursing runs two UG courses including BSc Nursing, two PG courses including MSc Nursing, 12 Post-Diploma courses & 12 Diploma courses.
Kagithapattarai Campus In December 2009, the centenary year of nursing education at CMC Vellore, the College of Nursing moved out of the main hospital premises to a sprawling new campus in Kagithapattarai, very close to the hospital. Apart from the nursing college, the campus houses spacious classrooms, a digital library, conference rooms, administrative offices, a chapel and hostels for nursing students.

Premier research institute CMC Vellore is engaged in cutting-edge research into the causes and treatment of diseases, and collaborates with hospitals and universities throughout the world. It is one of the leading contributors of medical research articles in India. There are numerous research programmes funded by national and international agencies as well as through internal resources. During the period of April 2019 to March 2020, a total of 830 research proposals were reviewed.
Dr. Gagandeep Kang Fellow of the Royal Society Dr. Kang, CMC alumna and Professor in the Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences at CMC, is a leading researcher with a focus on viral infections in children, and the testing of rotaviral vaccines. She has been described as India's 'Vaccine godmother'.
Dr. Priya Abraham Director, National Institute of Virology Dr. Abraham, CMC alumna, was Professor in the Department of Virology here when invited to be Director of the National Institute, two months before the first COVID-19 cases were reported in India.
Stem Cell Research Centre CMC's Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR), was established in 2007 as a collaboration between inStem, the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and CMC. CSCR is supported by the Department of Biotechnology of the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.

Department of Community Health The Department, established in 1955, is the epicentre of CMC‘s community health programme. It has its own secondary-level hospital, a training centre, mobile clinics and various outreach initiatives under its Community Health & Development (CHAD) programme. CHAD provides primary care to rural and urban communities nearby and to marginalised tribals in the Jawadhi Hills, upto 150 km away. The Department serves as a training ground for medical, nursing and paramedical students and is a worldrenowned centre for epidemiological and translational research.
Rural Unit of Health and Social Affairs (RUHSA) RUHSA was started in the 40s, in response to the needs of the 'most backward' K. V. Kuppam block. RUHSA provides affordable medical care, various models of community development and poverty reduction, and offers training for all levels of health and development professionals.
Low Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU) LCECU is a unique model of Social Responsibility designed by CMC in the early 1980s. The unit provides low-cost primary and secondary healthcare to Vellore's urban poor through Family and Community Health physicians.
College of Nursing Community Health (CONCH) CONCH, established in 1987, is a vibrant primary health care programme managed by nurses. Home visits form the basis of this programme, focusing on a population living in 25 villages.

What do you do when all your local doctors have given up on your 14-yrold son? For Kumar and his wife from Bihar, the answer was CMC. Advit had severe pneumonia and damage in multiple organs, including his kidneys.
David was able to study BSc. Respiratory Therapy at CMC through a scholarship that covered his entire course expenses. He loves to spend time with patients, sharing in and relieving their pain. Since he lost his father, his mother (a pastor) has cared for David and his sister. Thanks to the scholarship, he has no educational loan to repay.
Drainage tubes, haemodialysis, and expensive antibiotics were needed, along with a prolonged stay in the ICU. Thanks to gifts from generous friends of CMC Vellore, we were able to help with a grant from the Emergency Fund.

Gender equality From the very first years till date, 120 years later, women have always enjoyed equal pay and equal opportunities at CMC.
Pastoral care Led by the Department of Chaplaincy, pastoral care is offered in various ways. There are 19 chaplains from different language groups, including Khasi, Bengali, Nepalese and Mizo, to minister to the spiritual needs of patients.
CMC's mission hospital network includes 200 hospitals run by various Indian church missions, spread across the country. Trained personnel from CMC have been working in these rural hospitals since the early half of the 20th century, either for short - two to three years on average - or for longer periods. Their service is of crucial importance as rural India has a severe shortage of medical professionals and appalling health indices.
Green initiatives Sewage Treatment Plants, Water Recycling Units and solar panels have been set up in various campuses. Waste collection from residential areas and re-purposoing of useful materials is managed by a self-help group of disadvantaged women. And through the sustained efforts of generations of Nature-loving students & staff, the College campus, once near-barren, is now a green, biodiverse haven.
