The Department of Infectious Diseases in collaboration with the Departments of Wellcome Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology hosted the “Ninth International Short Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine” on November 16 to 28, 2015 at IDTRC. Twenty six students (including 9 Indians and 17 International) attended the two week long course which offered lectures, clinical bedside session and laboratory practicals in bacteriology, virology, parasitology and mycology. Expertise was offered by international faculty from the London school of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Albert Einstein College of Medicine New York, University of Oxford, McGill University Canada, Memorial University Canada, Haukeland University Norway and Center of Geographic Medicine and Tropical Diseases. Faculty of CMC Vellore from the Departments of Wellcome Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Virology, Child Health-III, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Dermatology, SLRTC Karigiri, CHAD and Infectious Diseases contributed actively to the learning process. This course was started in 2007 and has received tremendous appreciation from the participants and so far 80 Indians and 157 International students have been trained in the different aspects of Tropical Medicine. The feedback has been extremely positive and we hope to continue this programme in the following years with active participation from the CMC faculty. A travel medicine workshop was also organized on November 21, 2015 to educate nurses and physicians on different aspects of travel medicine. Travel Medicine is a specialty dedicated to assessing risk for travellers, educating them regarding the risks and counselling them with regard to prevention of illnesses and injury. With increasingly cheap travel options being available and people being more adventurous, this is a specialty with increasing relevance and importance. Data is now available in geo-sentinel and other travel networks with regard to returning travellers. The concept of travel Medicine is just emerging in India and hence this workshop was held to sensitize doctors to the same.

11 TH ANNU AL CONFERENCE OF THE INDIAN SOCIET Y OF BONE AND MINERAL RESEAR CH ANNUAL RESEARCH The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Christian Medical College, Vellore hosted the 11th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Bone and Mineral Research on November 27 and 28, 2015 which was preceded by a preconference CME – for Post graduate teaching on November 26, 2015. About 45 national and International Experts in the field of metabolic bone disorders led the deliberations. More than 500 delegates participated in this event. The conference was inaugurated on November 27, 2015. Dr. George D’souza, Dean, St. Johns Research Institute, Bangalore was the chief guest for the evening. The inaugural function was also attended by administrators both from the ISBMR and CMC. There were special quiz sessions organized for MBBS, MD/DNB(Internal Medicine) and DM /DNB(Endocrine) students. 20 Medical Colleges from different parts of Tamil Nadu and elsewhere participated in these events. There were 32 scientific abstracts presented in the platform/poster sessions of the conference. Attractive cash prizes and medals were awarded at the Valedictory function. The following topics were covered during the 3 days – Post menopausal osteoporosis and the latest trends in its treatment, vitamin D deficiency, sclerotic bone disorders, parathyroid disease, post organ transplantation bone disease, diabetes associated bone disease and thyroid related bone disorders. This conference was designated by the Centre for Accreditation, Dr. MGR Medical University, Tamil Nadu for a maximum of 30 CME credits under Category 1. Alumni Meet : The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Christian Medical College, Vellore organized an Alumni Meet for its past Endocrine and Diabetes trainees on November 28, 2015. It celebrated 20 years of the existence of their department from 1995-2015. It was attended by 17 Alumni with families apart from the current trainees and faculty. Professor M.S. Seshadri and Professor Nihal Thomas spoke on how the department had come into existence and how it has reached the current position. All alumni presented their memories from their tenure in the department and spoke about their current work and position. It was definitely a nostalgic moment for all, reminiscing their past and thanking the department and CMC, for having nurtured them to be able to hold their current positions today. HOSPITAL CONTROL SHORT TERM COURSE ON HOSPIT AL INFECTION CONTR OL The Office of the Nursing Superintendent in collaboration with the Hospital Infection Control Committee successfully conducted 2nd Batch, One Week Short Term Course for Nurses of Mission and private Hospitals from November 23rd to 28th 2015. The Course was designed to equip Nurses with current knowledge and skills related to Hospital Infection Control with sessions by Medical and Nursing faculty, practical sessions, field visits and group work. The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai granted 30 Credit points for the participants. The course commenced with the inaugural function on November 23, 2015. The inauguration started with invocation by the nursing staff and devotion by Chaplain, Ms. Saramma Kuruvilla. The Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee welcomed the gathering and Additional Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Mrs. Regina Xavier introduced the Course. Felicitations were offered by the Vice Principal, Dr. Ansu Pulimood, Deputy Dean, Dr. Vinitha Ravindran. Dr. Hema Paul proposed the vote of thanks. The pretest was conducted and aims and objectives of the course were discussed with the participants. The sessions consisted of wide spectrum of infection control, history and trends to quality management. There were visits to CSSD, temporary waste storage area, private wards, joint replacement rooms, microbiology lab and OR. Clinical skill stations for the participants were arranged to enhance the hands on training in clinical areas. The participants gave feedback about the sessions of each day. After every session, there was an active interaction between faculty and the participants. Practices from different parts of the country were shared and discussed and participants set goals for implementation of standards in their respective hospitals. Participants also requested for continued guidance and support from CMC Vellore and have formed a social network group for future interaction. On the final day, post test was conducted that qualified all the participants for certification. The week long learning activity concluded on November 28, 2015 with the valedictory function. The report of the course was given by Mrs. Regina Xavier. Two participants gave their feedback on the course. Dr. C. E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent and Dr. Premila Lee offered felicitation and congratulated the participants and gave away the certificates to the participants. The 40 Nurses from all over the country participated with enthusiasm and gave an encouraging feedback which has strengthened the resolve to make this an ongoing endeavor.

W ORLD AIDS D AY 20 15 DA 2015 The idea initiated by the Junior Red Cross (JRC) of College of Nursing and enthusiastically taken on by the Medical Nursing Department, resulted in the following activities being successfully implemented to commemorate World AIDS Day on December 1, 2015. The theme “GETTING TO ZERO” was clearly emphasized via Posters, Health Awareness talks, Video shows and PowerPoint Presentation carried out on the General Medical Ward floor, Patient waiting area and on the Digital notice board near the ISSCC building car park respectively. Every activity gave food for thought to the participants and the general public who have benefited immensely. These efforts would not have come to fruition except for the support from Dean, College of Nursing, Nursing Superintendent, General Superintendent, JRC Nursing Students, Staff of IDTRC and the blessings of our Almighty Father. RENO V ATED MIQ G YM RENOV GYM The renovated MIQ Gym was inaugurated on December 3, 2015 by our director Dr. Sunil Chandy. The dedication began with a word of prayer by the chaplain Mr. Raja. The Director congratulated the governing body on their efforts and said inaugurating a gym was a unique experience for him. He also said that he will look into addition of air-conditioning during the summer. The renovated gym boasts of a whole new range of equipment for both weight training and functional training. The gym will be a unisex gym open 24/7 to residents of MIQ and members of the MIQ establishment. MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME Marriage Enrichment Programme for Married couples was held on November 28 to 29, 2015 at New Exam Hall at Bagayam campus. The topics covered included Understanding different Personality types, Availability, Family Foundation, Discerning God’s will, Parenting teenagers, Conflicts Resolution, Power of Family prayer and Handling finance. CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR
Every year, December is ushered in a mood of celebration. Of Christmas. A month for families to get together, exchanging gifts, travelling, singing carols and watching the old year give way to the new. In the city of Chennai, there would have been many who had planned all these for themselves and their children. Some may have started shopping gifts for their loved ones. But circumstances took a different turn with the torrential downpour of rains. There has been untold misery, dislocation, destruction and death. The dreams of little children have been replaced by dejection. It leaves us wondering, should we and how should we celebrate Christmas this year. The first Christmas two thousand years ago has some similarity to what we are experiencing today. There was dislocationÆ Joseph searching for a decent place for Mary to deliver, shepherds awakened by the announcement of a strange birth, the wise men travelling miles of desert following a celestial GPS. In a village called Ramah, there was destruction and death of several new borns. Yet, the convergence of all towards the newborn baby Jesus brought Joy & Celebration. Can we make our celebration this year directed outward. A response of being available to the flood-stricken folks in Chennai may be appropriate. Let’s not receive any gifts, but give. If we do receive, can we give an equivalent in cash or kind to those unable to enjoy Christmas. Christmas is normally a time when our wards and campuses are lighted up. This year we will not. Instead, by our giving, lighten the dullness that surrounds those in Chennai. Join in friends to convert Happy Christmas to making Christmas Happy for someone else. Dr. Sunil Chandy Director
