As we present a record of the work done over the past year, we are conscious of the Divine at work in our midst and we are truly grateful for this gift. In the field of education we continue to offer student-centred, competency based education and respond to the huge gap that still exists between the need for skilled and caring health professionals and their availability. We are delighted that God has enabled us to increase the seats in the MBBS, BSc Nursing, PcBSc Nursing, Medical Postgraduate and Allied Health Science courses and are conscious that this blessing ought to be shared with those in greatest need. In the area of patient care, we have again been blessed with large numbers of patients and our efforts to ensure that each one has an experience of the Divine during their sojourn here, continues. Our dedication to patient-centred, ethical and compassionate health care requires redoubled efforts. Our quest for accreditation by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals (NABH) is in the final stage of a long process and has provided us an opportunity to reexamine our procedures and practice. We are grateful to our scientists as well as the many national and international bodies for partnering with us in our research. We're also grateful to our Institutional Review Board and other bodies which help us with decisions regarding the path and the direction of our endeavour in this field. Our outreach work, in the environs of Vellore and in partnership with our mission hospitals scattered across the length and breadth of our nation, is a task that helps to rejuvenate us. As we explore new ways of growing and deepening this partnership we hope that we will be sensitive to God's leading. About CMC CMC had its beginning in the mind and heart of Ida Sophia Scudder who was moved with compassion at the suffering of women in childbirth when she visited her parents who were serving in the Arcot Mission in South India in the late 19th century. She could not ignore the calling to provide medical assistance to the women of India. She decided to respond and translated vision to action, giving a lifetime of service to further the kingdom of God. With great resolve, she studied in Philadelphia and Cornell and then returned to India to open a one room clinic in January 1900 in Vellore. It was a time when epidemics and superstitions were rampant and the average life expectancy was 24 years. She had to battle with plague, famine, ignorance and taboos. In 1902, a 40 bedded hospital was funded by an American philanthropist in memory of his wife, Mary Taber Schell. She established a School of Nursing in 1909 and a Medical School offering the LMP course in 1918. In 1924, the hospital expanded to another campus in the centre of Vellore town. Dr Scudder believed in reaching out to the people in the surrounding villages and she did this by running roadside clinics where hundreds of patients would gather under a tree and wait for her van. CMC was upgraded to a medical college affiliated to the Madras University in 1942 and opened its doors to men students in 1947. Dr Ida planned, prayed and promoted her dream and was able to raise funds and attract a wealth of human resource from all over the world. After her demise in 1960, the administration of the institution was handed over to the Indian protestant churches. CMC became linked to mission hospitals run by these churches, committed to train health professionals to serve needy areas. In the next two decades, CMC made great strides in developing tertiary care, pioneering cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery and renal transplantation in India. CMC continues to be a great training institute in allied health sciences, nursing and post-graduate medical education. CMC has initiated numerous fellowship programmes and superspecialty degree courses. It has also established health 2
CMC Statistics management, distance education and e-learning programmes. CMC's graduates form a large proportion of the trained health care personnel manning the hospitals run by the churches in remote parts of the country. Research at CMC has always aimed to be relevant to the needs of the country. Several protocols for costeffective care and solutions to problems like leprosy, polio, childhood diarrhoea, invasive bacterial infections, spinal cord injuries and cancers have been investigated here. The Department of Biotechnology, Government of India has entrusted development and translation of stem cell research to CMC. From a one room dispensary CMC has grown into a tertiary level teaching hospital with 2600 beds that treats over 5000 out-patients a day, performs 2000 surgeries a month and delivers 15,000 babies a year. Today, CMC is considered one of India's finest medical college hospitals and attracts patients from all over the country as well as neighbouring nations. CMC is committed to patient care and its staff keep the patients interests uppermost and are willing to walk an extra mile. CMC is an amazingly complex and vibrant organization and maintains its Christian commitment through care of the marginalised and vulnerable. CMC has been a champion of stigmatised patients afflicted with mental illness, leprosy and HIV. It has tried to keep even high technology care accessible to the poor through various schemes so that no patient is turned away for lack of funds. CMC has stood for holistic medicine, integrating physical, psychological and spiritual care. Faculty and students stay on campus and so there is a sense of community living and student nurture. Patients flock to this small city because they believe they will get an honest opinion and care from committed professionals who live their motto, “Not to be ministered unto but to minister”. The challenge for CMC is to adapt to the changing health care scenario in India, to become a world class institution steeped in its core values of integrity, justice and service. General Services The Civil Engineering Department supervises the construction and maintenance of buildings, water supply, sanitation and roads. During 2011-12, a total of 17 major and 50 minor projects were completed for an overall value of Rs.27,14,67,624.00. Further 15 major and 15 minor projects are in progress for an estimated value of Rs.40,90,47,350.00. A total of 15,471 maintenance jobs in masonry, plumbing, carpentry, painting etc, valued at Rs. 49 lakhs were also completed. Electrical Engineering maintains 15 transformers, 7 generators and 62 lifts. During 2011-12, the total power consumed was 20,62,480 units, costing Rs.11,31,45,124.00. Mechanical Engineering maintains equipment in the wards, departments, operation theatres and OPDs. It also provides steam and medical gases to the operation theatres and critical care units. During 2011-12, 10,032 jobs were carried out and 74 new medical gas outlets were added to the existing outlets. Through the Asset Recycling Office, nearly 2,700 items were donated to Mission Hospitals, and over 1200 items were recycled within the institution. The Electronics Engineering Department maintains all Biomedical and Electronic Equipment, the Pneumatic Chute System, the OPD Patient and Nurse Call System, the Chapel Relay System and the Surveillance Camera System. Twenty laboratory stations and all canisters of the Pneumatic Chute System were upgraded with RF ID facility. This facility enables automatic dialing and traceability of canisters. A new zone, consisting of 9 stations and 30 canisters was installed exclusively for the Accident and Emergency Services. Every day, 15,000 to 20,000 samples are transferred to the 8
laboratories through the Pneumatic Chute System. The Electronics Engineering Department calibrated bio-medical equipment in the institution. The Environmental Engineering Unit was estabilished in June 2011. The main function of the unit is to provide drinking water to the Main Hospital Campus, the College of Nursing Campus (Kagithapattari) and Shell Campus. The unit also maintains the Sewage Treatment Plant that recycles water.

The Hospital Maintenance section and Hospital Housekeeping Attenders are entrusted with the task of maintaining cleanliness in the Hospital Campus. Since August 2006, Exnora collects garbage from the Hospital Campus twice a day.

The Postal Section handled 86,181 letters and 1,084 parcels during 2011-12. The Transport Department coordinates transport requirements through 164 institutional vehicles and through external agencies. The Department of Laundry washed and ironed 71,73,535 linen during 2011-12.
The Central Sterile Supply Department received 3048073 items for sterilization and processed 42,54,689 sterile packs during 2011-12. An average of 11,656 packs was processed every day and 7,50,868 items were supplied to the OPDs.

Research Research at CMC has always been an important part of the mandate to 'inculcate the spirit of inquiry' in our students and to generate and advance knowledge to improve the provision of curative and preventive services, to the people we serve directly and to the nation. Given the strong clinical base, CMC is a leader in medical research in India today, from assessing the needs of the population in terms of communicable and non-communicable disease to translating interventions that arise from basic research on pathogenesis and prevention of illness. The collaboration of faculty from diverse backgrounds with clinical and scientific expertise has been the key to the growth of research in the departments that recognized for their outstanding contributions both nationally and internationally. These include the Departments of Gastrointestinal Sciences, Haematology, Bioengineering, Virology and Community Health. Major areas of interest include inflammatory bowel disease, enteric infections, the intestinal microbiota, enteric vaccines, immune responses to enteric and viral pathogens, pharmacogeneomics of haematologic malignancies, genetics of haematologic diseases, mesenchymal stem cell therapy, non-invasive monitoring, production of low cost biomechanical devices and surveillance of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Other departments such as Endocrinology, Medical oncology, Radiation Oncology and Pulmonary Medicine are extending their involvement in clinical trials to undertake investigator initiated epidemiological and mechanistic studies. Basic science departments such as Biochemistry and Physiology are expanding their research portfolios and collaborating with clinical departments on projects that seek to understand why and how 12
inflammatory processes and toxins affect gut, renal and cardiac functions. A number of departments and facilities promote research within and beyond the institution by providing specialized training, academic resources and research opportunities. These include the Epidemiology Resource Centre, the South Asian Cochrane Network, the Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Biostatistics, the Centre for Stem Cell Research, the Basic Sciences laboratory, the Field Research Unit and the Infectious Diseases Training and Research Centre. CMC researchers are now funded by all the major national and international funding agencies, including the Indian Council for Medical Research, the Departments of Science and Biotechnology, the Wellcome trust, the National Institutes of Health, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the European Commission's Framework Programme. Expansion of the quantity with further involvement of faculty and departments and improvement of the quality of research through ensuring appropriate training, support resources in ethics, epidemiology and statistics and monitoring of research are key pre-requisites to ensuring the sustainability of research in the institution. During 2011-12, 441 Research Projects were reviewed by the Institutional Review Board. These included 78 external application and 274 fluid research projects. The total amount sanctioned for the fluid research projects was Rs.74,36,467.

Dr. D.J. Christopher, Professor of Pulmonary Medicine was elected President of the Association of Respiratory Care. The College of Nursing has been re-designated a WHO Collaborating Centre for Nursing and Midwifery for four years from September 2011. This is the third time that the College of Nursing has been given this honour. The College of Nursing has been identified by the Indian Nursing Council to be one of the five national Nodal Centres for strengthening pre service education in ANM Schools. Dr. M.V. Daniel, former Professor of Orthopaedics was conferred the life Time Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to Medical Education and Healthcare Services by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Dr. Debashish Danda, Professor of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology has been awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London. Dr. Deeptiman James was awarded the Professor M. Natarajan Gold Medal and Lupin Gold Medal for MS in Orthopaedics by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The Department of Cardiology was recognized as the ‘Best Specialty Department of India’ at the ICICI Lombard & CNBC TV18 India Healthcare Awards 2011. The Department of Cardiology, in association with the Department of Vascular Surgery performed India’s first case of Thoroco Abdominal Aneurysm Endovascular Repair using Surgeon fenestrated aortic stent grafts.

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery won the ‘Dr. Jamaal Memorial Rolling Shield’ at the state level Plastic Surgery Conference held at Thanjavur. Dr. Dilip Mathai, Professor of Medicine has been awarded the Indian Association of Clinical Medicine Conference Oration Medal 2010. Dr. Ebor Jacob, Associate Professor of Paediatrics has been elected member of the Executive Committee of the Paediatric Critical Care Council. Dr. Edwin Stephen, Professor of Surgery has been elected Treasurer of the Vascular Society of India for a two year term. Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Professor, Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory, was awarded the Dr. Y.S. Narayana Rao Oration Award 2008 by the Indian Council of Medical Research. Dr. George Mathew, former Principal, was conferred the Best Medical Administrator Award in recognition of his contribution to Medical Administration and Healthcare Management by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Dr. George M Varghese, Professor of Medicine was awarded the Young Investigators Award by the Infectious Diseases Society of America. Mrs. Grace Paul Narayan Rao, alumnus of the Diploma Nursing batch of 1944 and PCBSc. batch of 1968 was presented the Alumni Award 2011. Dr. Indira Agarwal, Professor of Paediatrics was appointed President of the Indian Society of Paediatric Nephrology for a two year term.
Mr. Jove John Robinson, Social Worker, Paediatric Oncology, Department of Child Health was awarded the ‘Best Social Worker of the Year’ at the Annual Indian Paediatric Oncology Initiative meeting. Dr. Joy Sarojini Michael, Professor, Department of Microbiology, was awarded the third prize at the 2011 Biovision Lilly Award ceremony at the 7th World Life Sciences Forum, Biovision, Lyon , France. The award recognizes young scientists living and working in a developing country, who have a track record of excellent research in tuberculosis. Dr. Karen Ruby Lionel was awarded the Dr. S.A. Kabir Gold Medal, the Professor Dr. T. Srinivasan Medal and Cash prize and Dr. V.G. Appukutty Memorial Gold Medal for MD in Anaesthesiology by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Dr. Krishna Balagopal was awarded the Medical University Medal for D.M. in Neurology by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Dr. Linu Paulson was awarded the Medical University Medal for MD in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Dr. Mary Jesudason, former Professor of Microbiology was awarded the Dr. H.I. Jhala Award by the Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists. Dr. Munish Aggarwal was awarded the Mrs. Suseela Santhosham Memorial Gold Medal for M.Ch in CardioVascular and Thoracic Surgery by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Dr. Neeraj S. was awarded the Medical University Medal for DM in Clinical Haematology by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. The Paediatric Nephrology Division, headed by Dr. Indira Agarwal, was selected for the ‘ISN Sister Renal Centre Programme’. This involves a partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles.
