Christopher, Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine, updated the audience with recent advances in the field of Diagnostic and Therapeautic endoscopy of Lungs and Pleura. Professor Balamugesh T. delivered a lecture on Medical thoracoscopy-guided Pleural biopsy to help in quick diagnosis of respiratory diseases like Lung cancer and Tuberculosis. Chief guest, Dr. Roy Gnanamuthu, Thoracic Surgeon, CMC, reminded the attending physicians of the value of regular practice of thoracic endoscopy to further hone their skills. Continued on Page 2

Department of Dietitics celebrates World Food Day Department of Dietetics T hecelebrated World Food Day on 21st October, 2016, by organising a public exhibition. World Food Day is a day of action against world hunger, and commemorates the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of
the United Nations 71 years ago. Ms. Mahendri N.V., Head of Dietetics, welcomed the gathering and spelled out the objective for celebrating World Food Day. Continued on Page 2

he Department of Pulmonary Medicine concluded the 2-days’ Indian Chest Society workshop on Basic Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy on 19th October, 2016, where various topics on the art and science of Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy (Endoscopy of Lungs and Pleura) were discussed. Dr. D.J Christopher, Dr. Balamugesh T. and Dr. Barney Isaac T.J. performed live demonstrations of Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy via video transmission to the venue of the workshop. Delegates were provided 4 hours of hands-on training on Bronchoscopy and Thoracoscopy mannequins and cadaver goat models.

Lectures and hands-on training sessions of this workshop were appreciated and well received by the Respiratory Physicians, about 30 of whom attended from across the country. This workshop was awarded 15 credit points by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G. R. Medical University.

Dr. V. Senthil Kumar, Designated Officer of Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, was the chief guest for the occasion. He declared the exhibition open to the public and reminded that 21st October is also Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders Prevention Day, emphasising the importance of Iodised salt for maintaining good health. Mr. A Gowri Sundar, Food Safety Officer of Food Safety and Drug Administration Department was also present along with Associate General Superintendent, Mr. Sunny Kuruvilla and Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr. Debashish Das Adhikary.
Workshop in Medical Education Technologies for faculty The MCI Nodal centre for National Faculty Development, CMC Vellore, conducted the Revised Basic Course Workshop in Medical Education Technologies (RBCW) from 18 th to 20 th October, 2016, followed by a Sensitisation Programme for Attitude and Communication Module (AT-COM) on 21st October. The objective of this programme was to sensitise the participants to the implementation of the competency-based AT-COM Module as per MCI Directives. The programme aimed to capacitate medical educators / administrators of the 20 affiliated medical colleges of the MCI Nodal centre, CMC Vellore. This programme was awarded 8 CME Credit hours by the Tamil Nadu State Medical Council.
Graham Kendrick visits CMC CMC welcomed back to Vellore, Christian singer-songwriter Graham Kendrick, for a series of events from 20th to 23rd October, 2016. His previous visit was for the Merge Festival, 2015.
On 23rd October, Graham Kendrick led a retreat themed Stand firm in your faith based on Isaiah 7:1-14. That last evening of his visit, he led the College Chapel service, speaking on the text “Fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you,” from 2 Timothy 1:6.

On 20th October, he performed in the open air at the Student Nurses’ Hostel, College of Nursing, to an enthusiastic audience of about 1,400, including student nurses and residents of the hospital and Kagittapattarai campuses. He rounded off the evening with his well-known Shine Jesus Shine. On 21st October, he visited Ida Scudder School for morning assembly and received a spirited response from the children. On the evenings of 21st and 22nd October, he played to a packed Scudder Auditorium. The choirs Melodious Madcaps and Bel Canto trained by Dr. Barbara Isely joined him on Friday. A professional band from Chennai (Stephen, Amos, Pharez, Vineeth and John Praveen) backed him on Saturday. He played many old favourites as well as some brand new material.
The community benefited immensely from his visit and raised a unanimous 2 request for his return next year.

• Mr. John Sehar Memorial Essay Competition Mr. John Sehar, Public Relations Officer, joined CMC in 1989. After a short stint in the Blood Bank, he moved to the Public Relations Office and remained the public face of CMC for nearly two decades. He was known for his commitment to the cause of this institution. His contribution to the Department and the Institution as a whole has left lasting impressions. His name goes down in the history of the institution as an epitome of sacrificial commitment. The John Sehar memorial essay competition has been instituted to perpetuate his ideals. A prize of Rs.1000/will be awarded for the best essay on the subject - Commitment to CMC. The essay can be in English or Tamil and limited to a total of 1500 words. • Dr. Ida B. Scudder Essay Competition Dr. Ida Belle Scudder, affectionately known as Ida B. was the niece of Dr. Ida S. Scudder the founder of Christian Medical College. Ida B. was on the faculty of CMC for 36 years, serving as both Radiologist and Radiotherapist. She was known for her empathy for those in pain and her deep concern for the suffering. The Ida B. Scudder essay competition was instituted to perpetuate her ideals. A prize of Rs.2000/- will be awarded for the best essay on any subject related to the care of the sick that illustrates that the fullest possible identification with the patient is the best way to serve him / her and meet his / her needs. The essay should be in English and limited to a total of 2000 words. The last date for submitting entries is 21st November, 2016. The competition is open to all CMC staff and students, except the panel of judges and their families. 2. The decision of the judges will be final. 3. The prize will be awarded during the Founder's Day celebrations.
