he Department of Colorectal Surgery, in collaboration with the Departments of Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology, conducted the 7th Continuing Medical Education programme in colorectal surgery. The academic deliberations were spread over three days, 17th to 19th November, 2016. The theme for this year’s conference was Balancing Outcomes in the Management of Low Rectal Cancer – Oncological Results and Quality of Life. The conference was attended by more than 50 delegates from across the country and more than 10 eminent faculty from India and abroad, who have an
interest and vast experience in the management of low rectal cancer. The faculty from the United Kingdom, Australia, Sri Lanka and Brazil brought in new ideas and perspectives, in improving oncological and functional outcomes. The first day’s discussions, after a quick recapitulation of the history and evolution of management of rectal cancer, focused on reviewing its current status and the evidence that supports it. Care and Anaesthesia worked together towards performing the first ventricular tachycardia ablation involving activation mapping with ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) support in Asia.
The patient had suffered a myocardial infarction in 1997, leaving him with a scar and poor ventricular function. Abnormal passage of current through this scar resulted in his suffering from recurrent ventricular tachycardia at the rates of 230-250bpm.
The best way to treat this would involve mapping the abnormal circuits while the patient was in VT – activation mapping.

The following day, discussions were focused on newer surgical techniques, such as robotic surgery and trans-anal total mesorectal excision. New treatment paradigms such as watchful observation after chemoradiation were also discussed. The need for better understanding of the molecular basis of tumour behaviour, to enable individualisation of treatment was emphasised as a future perspective. There were extensive discussions and debates during the mock MDT sessions on all three days. These MDT sessions further emphasised the need for a multimodal approach in individualising treatment for low rectal cancer. Another highlight of the CME was a rectal cancer contouring workshop for postgraduates on the second day, organised by the Department of Radiation Oncology. The workshop began with sessions on pelvic anatomy, radiological description of pelvic and rectal anatomy, followed by a brief class on contouring guidelines in rectal cancer. Postgraduates and delegates had the opportunity to practice contouring on laptops loaded with the Varian software and CT images. Parallel sessions in medical and radiation oncology emphasised the role and future of newer techniques such as bone sparing IMRT and intensification of concurrent chemo irradiation in selected group of patients. The three-day conference, awarded with 25 credit points by Anna University, was packed with informative lectures and an exhaustive overview of existing evidence and literature. The academic content of the conference and the hospitality at the institution was well appreciated by faculty and delegates alike.

This however, is not possible, as the high ventricular rate in a patient with ventricular dysfunction would severely compromise perfusion to the brain and other vital organs. Activation mapping was made possible with the ECMO circuit, which ensured vital organ perfusion while the patient was in VT. The procedure was preceded by a week of planning and troubleshooting by Dr. Raj, Dr. Binila, Dr. Vinayak Shukla and Dr. John Roshan. The Medical Gas team led by Mr. Josam Titus helped improvise the available facility to provide the required support. Dr. Korah and Dr. Alpha Mathew provided access to connect the ECMO circuitary. The Anaesthesia team comprising Dr. Raj, Dr. Kirubakaran and Dr. Varsha, closely monitored the vitals and ensured that there was adequate cerebral oxygenation all through the procedure. Dr. Binila and Dr. Ebor ran the ECMO circuit to precision, titrating it to maintain appropriate haemodynamics. The perfusion team led by Mr. Shankar helped ensure smooth flow through the ECMO circuitary. The procedure was performed by Dr. John Roshan, ably supported by Dr. Anandaroop and Dr. Sirish; Cardiac technicians Mr. Stanley and Mr. Monik and the nursing team led by Ms. Joyce. The team is grateful to God and the institution for providing the support that made this possible.
Department of Paediatrics celebrates Children’s Day 2016
Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy was present at the programme along with Associate Director, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee and Deputy Dean, Dr. Vinitha Ravindran. He observed in his address to the assembly that adults often forget to be forgiving and united like children, adding that there is much to learn from them, especially given today’s divided society. The organising committee comprising staff and student nurses were pleased with the turnout of about 200, all of whom found the programme delightful.

Children’s Day, was celebrated in a special programme organised by the Paediatric Department on 14th November, 2016. Child patients, with the help of their parents, and nurses of the ‘Q’ Ward costumed to represent the diverse culture of the country and entertained the gathering. Musical and dramatic performances were put up by student nurses for the children as well. The children were then awarded with prizes from various competitions held prior to Children’s Day, and as per tradition, planted roses along with the administrators.

55 th National Pharmacy Week Observed The Department of Pharmacy organised the 55th National Pharmacy Week from 20th to 26th November, 2016. The theme for this year was Pharmacists for a Healthy India: Role in Prevention and Management Of Diabetes. This brought to the fore the importance of Pharmacy in health and disease, safe and proper use of drugs, especially anti-diabetic drugs, proper storage and so on. Various competitions pertaining to the theme were organised through the week, that included poster design, slogan writing (Tamil and English), Essay writing (Tamil and English) and a quiz programme for healthcare professionals, patients and the public. Approximately 300 persons participated in these events. An exhibition was held for the benefit of the public and patients, to create awareness about the safe and proper use of drugs. The exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Karthikeyan, Assistant Director, Drugs Control Office, Vellore Zone. Drugs Inspectors Mrs. Mahalakshmi, Ms. Saranya and Mrs. Manimegalai graced the occasion. Associate Director, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla and the Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee offered their felicitation on the occasion. The Pharmacy Week was concluded with a valedictory function, during which prize winners of competitions were awarded.

• Dr. Anjali Lepcha, Professor, ENT-IV, won the silver medal and second prize for Consultant’s Surgical Video Presentation at the 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Otology held from 18 th to 20th November, 2016 at Kozhikode, Kerala.
• Mr. Mohammed Azharuddin KO, Associate Research Officer, Neurochemistry Laboratory, Department of Neurological Sciences, was awarded the Best Poster Award at the 85th Annual Meeting of the Society of Biological Chemists (India) and the Symposium Theme - Innovations in Biological Research on Health and Diseases held at the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI), Mysore (21st – 24th November, 2016). The poster presentation was titled 'Common Parasite Antigens Induce a Cancerous Milieu in Cells of the Brain'. This study has been carried out under the guidance of Dr. Prabhakaran V.
