The first Certificate course on Hospital Infection Control and Antimicrobial Stewardship was successfully conducted from 20th to 24th June, 2016, by the Hospital Infection Control Committee, earning 30 credit points from the Tamil Nadu MGR University. 50 delegates in all took part in the course, comprising a mĂŠlange of clinicians, microbiologists and administrators from medical colleges, mission hospitals and private hospitals from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya and Nepal. The course commenced with an inaugural function lead with prayer by Ms. Saramma Kuruvilla, Chaplain, followed by invocation by the Infection Control Nurses. Dr. Hema Paul, the Organising Secretary and Infection Control Officer, welcomed the gathering, while Dr. Joy S Michael, Organising Chairperson and Secretary, HICC, laid out an overview of the course. Dr. Anna Pulimood, Vice Principal, HR, then emphasised the need for infection control and the role of antibiotic stewardship, in preventing hospital-acquired infections. Dr. Hema Paul proposed the vote of thanks. The course was designed to equip doctors on principles and practices of infection control and antimicrobial stewardship to enable them to function effectively and develop expertise in their respective areas. Hands-on practicals on hand hygiene and biomedical waste management were also facilitated, as were demonstrations on I.V line care and prevention bundles. In addition, site visits to intensive care units, common treatment facility plant of biomedical waste and central sterile supply department were organized as well. The course was concluded with a valedictory ceremony, where a report of the course was presented by Dr. Hema Paul. Following the course feedback delivered by participants, Dr. Ebor Jacob, Dy. Medical Superintendent, and Dr. George M. Varghese, Deputy Chairperson, HICC, offered felicitations and awarded certificates to the participants.
Clinical Virology’s Workshop for Lab Technologists A two-day workshop titled “Good Start Practices (GSP) for CD4+T cell estimation and blood collection” for laboratory technologists was jointly organised by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), BD India and the Department of Clinical Virology (National HIV Reference Laboratory). Held between 21st and 24th June, 2016, it was conducted in two batches. A total of 52 technologists from ART Centres in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala participated in this workshop. They were awarded certificates by Dr. Rajesh Kannangai, Professor and Head, Clinical Virology.
C-Ward Redeveloped A renovated ‘C’ Ward was dedicated with prayer on June 25th, 2016 by Dr. Rev. Finny Alexander and inaugurated by Associate Director, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla. Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, welcomed the gathering and explained the facilities added. Dr. Thambu David, Professor and Head, Medicine Unit-II, Dr. Shirley David, Professor and Head, Medical Nursing Department, Mrs. Ruma Nayak, Additional Deputy Nursing Superintendent and Dr. Ajay, Consultant, Medicine Unit-V, then expressed their best wishes towards the endeavour. At the close of the ceremony, Mrs. Bharathy R, Nurse Manager, ‘C’ Ward, proposed the vote of thanks The programme was well attended by the members of the department and all support services.

Retirements Mrs. Celia S. Robinson, Sr. Gr.I Clerk Typist, retired on 12th June, 2016 after 30 years of dedicated service to the department and the institution. She joined the Department of Clinical Microbiology in 1986. She single-handedly managed the department stores from the year 2000 right up to her superannuation. Her pleasant nature preceded her and held her in good stead amongst those she dealt with, earning her the ‘Most courteous employee over the telephone’ award in 2004. In 2012, she was presented the 'Exemplary Staff Award’ in appreciation of her work. Mrs. Radhamani Vinayagam, Staff Nurse Gr.I, Operation Room, obtained voluntary retirement on 18th June, 2016 after 21 years of service to the Institution. She completed GNM course in 1990 from School of Nursing, Victoria Hospital, Bangalore. She joined as Staff Nurse in CMC on the 1st November, 1994 and served in the OR for 21 years. She has functioned as scrub and circulatory Nurse in General Surgery OR, Septic OR, ENT OR, Day Care, TSSU and has also served in the Recovery Room. Her husband, Mr. Vinayagam has retired from service in the Railways. Her first son, Mr. Vivekanand has completed his Diploma in Nursing from KGF and works at a Private Ambulance Service in Vellore. Her elder daughter, Ms.V. Divya Deepika completed M.Sc. in Biotechnology and works as Assistant in Public Health Medicine in Chennai. Her younger daughter, Ms. Niveditha has completed her MCA. The CMC community wishes them well, as they move ahead into another phase of their lives, thankful for all their services to the institution.
Congratulations! • Dr. John Roshan and the Department of Cardiology (Electrophysiology) performed the first percutaneous ICD lead removal in the country using the Tight Rail device. This achievement would not have been possible without the able support of Anaesthesia (Dr. Raj and his team) and Thoracic Surgery (Dr. Vinayak Shukla and his team).
