T
he Department of Clinical Virology is a state-of-the-art National Resource Centre, responding to investigation of many viral infections – Hepatitis (A, B, C, D, E), Dengue, Influenza, HIV, herpes viruses and HPV. It began its Golden Jubilee Celebration on 12th October, 2016. The department is a NABL accredited laboratory since 2011. It is one of the few Virology laboratories associated with a medical college, offering the largest repertoires of diagnostic assays.
The Department was started as an enterovirus laboratory in 1966, as an initiative by Dr. Jacob Chandy, then Principal, and Dr. Telford Work of Centre for Disease Control (CDC), Atlanta. It was established and headed for two years by Dr. Roger Feldman of CDC and subsequently Dr. T. Jacob John took charge
in 1968, making it India’s first diagnostic virology laboratory. Some landmark initiatives of the laboratory include documentation of very low efficacy of oral polio vaccine, leading to the design and field test of ‘Pulse vaccination’ in 1981, and resulting in a polio-free Vellore in 1982 and 1983. Pulse polio immunisation was eventually adopted nationally, for polio eradication. In 1972, donor blood screening for HBV was established for the first time in the developing world. In 1986, HIV infection was detected again for the first time in India, in samples from commercial sex workers. By 1988, routine donor blood screening for HIV was established. The diagnostic virology laboratory became an independent Department of Clinical Virology in 1995 and expanded its diagnostic services immensely with the establishment of molecular tests in 1996. In commemoration of World Diabetes Day, the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism organised a Cookery Competition on 24th September, 2016, on the theme ‘Healthy Meal Box for 12-year-old School-Going Children’. The event, which took place at Darling Residency, Vellore. At the core of managing diabetes, is a healthy eating habit, which begins at home.
Given that childhood obesity is a strong contributor to diabetes, the Cooking Competition fulfilled its dual objective of creating awareness among homemakers, as well as encouraging their creativity. Diabetic diet does not mean living in deprivation, but is rather about wary food choices - most notably, limiting carbohydrates and cutting out sugars for a lifetime.

Currently, the Department of Clinical Virology has three main divisions namely, Hepatitis laboratory, Cell-culture-based diagnostic laboratory and Retrovirus laboratory, all of which carry out both serological and molecular assays. The celebratory function on 12th October, began with prayer by Rev. Pearson. After a word of welcome by Dr. Rajesh Kannangai, Head, Clinical Virology, Dr. T. Jacob John briefly sketched the history of the department. The programme was felicitated by the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, the Principal, Dr. Anna B Pulimood, and the Medical Superintendent, Dr. C.E Eapen. Two eminent virologists in India – Dr. S.P Thyagarajan, former Vice Chancellor of Madras University and current Professor of Eminence & Dean (Research), SRMC, Chennai, and Dr. V. Ravi, Professor of Neurovirology and Dean Faculty (Basic Sciences), NIMHANS, Bangalore – graced the occasion. Dr. M.K. Lalitha and Dr. Mary V. Jesudason – both former Heads of the Department of Clinical Microbiology – were also present. Dr. Roger Feldman reminisced about earlier days in the laboratory and honoured retired staff members of the department. A guest lecture on ‘Oral Vaccines in the Developing World’was delivered by Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Director, THSTI, Faridabad. The inaugural ceremony was followed by the scientific session, Virology: the Past, the Present and the Future. Dr. Ramanda Kamath, paediatrician at Westmead University, Sydney and Dr. P.S. Sundar Rao, former Head of Bio statistics in CMC, who worked with Dr. Feldman, shared their experience and the challenges in carrying out community studies in the 1960s. Drs. T.J John, G. Sridharan, Priya Abraham, Asha Mary Abraham, Rajesh K, Shoba Mammen, Mahesh Moorthy and John Fletcher presented an update of work conducted in the department in the last decades, in various areas like polio, hepatitis, neuroviroloy, HIV, respiratory viruses and arboviral infections. Dr. P. Vivekandan, IIT Delhi and Dr. Magesh Babu, SNHRC, Vellore, reflected on how the training in Virology at CMC shaped their careers and described the work currently carried out by them. Well attended by faculty, Ph.D and post graduate students from different colleges including CMC, the scientific programme was awarded 10 credit points by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R Medical University. This golden jubilee celebration will continue and culminate with a national conference in July 2017.

The judges for the event were Dr. Preethi, Post Doctoral Fellow, Wellcome Research, Mrs. Susan Tharakan and Mrs. Sheby Rajiv, Campus Manager, Kagithapet Residence Assocation, CMC Vellore. A total of 21 teams participated and the results were as follows: First prize: Ms. Sharon and Ms. Nandini; Second prize: Mr. Vinod Kumar; Third prize (shared): Mrs. Roseline Raj and Ms. Anita. Consolation prizes: Mrs. Evangeline, Ms. Sandya, Mr. Murali and Mrs. Meenakshi. The department also conducted a Dia-Quiz on Diabetes and Endocrine Disorders for Nursing Students at the College of Nursing on 11th October, 2016. Mr. T.S. Ravikumar, Professor and Head, Accident & Emergency Nursing, was the Chief Guest at the event. A total of 211 students participated in the preliminary written test, of whom 4 teams qualified to the final round, with the following results: First Prize: Ms. Harini, Ms. Jenitha, Ms. Angel Mariam and Ms. Ramalakshmi. Second Prize: Ms. Nilophar Begum, Ms. Monica, Ms.Renu Raju and Ms. Soumya R. Third Prize: Mr. Paul Ebenezer, Ms. S. Ramya, Ms. Anju Chacko Philip and Ms. Vanitha. Dr. Joy Sarojini Samuel, Vice Principal, is appointed Chairperson Selection Committee for Postgraduate Admission process 2017 with effect from 25th October, 2016.

Valiathan, National Research Professor, Manipal University.
