s part of a mission to roll out Cervical and Oral cancer community screening project, RUHSA, Christian Medical College organised a training workshop on 28th to 30th of June for a committed team at Baptist Hospital, Bangalore. The aim of the workshop was to initiate a feasible “Educate, Screen and Treat� cancer prevention programme for the disadvantaged communities in the urban slums and rural villages of Bangalore, serviced by the Community health department of Baptist hospital. The workshop was started off with devotion
led by Rev. Joseph Devaraj and the proceedings of the workshop were introduced to the participants by Dr. Biswajit Paul. he Truebeam STx Linear T Accelerator facility in the Radiation Oncology Department was dedicated on 27th June 2017. This state of the art Linear Accelerator is capable of treating moving targets with high precision, advanced speed and accuracy therefore bringing leading edge cancer
care to our institute. This machine is capable of delivering Image Guided Radiotherapy (IGRT), Radiosurgery for both intracranial (SRS) and extracranial targets (Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy or SABR, also known as Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy or SBRT). The participants included Medical Consultants, Dentist, Nurses and Field Assistants from Bangalore Baptist Hospital and cancer screening team at RUHSA. The workshop was lively with interactive and practical sessions on Visual Inspection methods for cervical and oral cancer screening, Cryotherapy, tobacco habit cessation counselling and treatment modalities of pre-invasive and invasive cervical and oral cancers and also outreach education and screening camps.

Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director, Dr. Solomon Satishkumar, Vice-Principal, Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, Mr. Sukumar Solomon, Associate General Superintendent and Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Associate Director offered felicitations. In his address, the Director highlighted the need of developing well equipped cancer care facilities in our institute for the benefit of our patients. In his vote of thanks, Dr. Thomas Ram extended gratitude to all those associated with the installation of the machine. The dedication was attended by CMC faculty and staff both from Radiation Oncology and associated Departments.
Marriage Enrichment Seminar Another “Marriage Enrichment Seminar” was held on the th 17-18 of June, 2017. Twenty three couples attended the seminar. It provided an opportunity to take a break from the routines of life, reflect, interact and learn how to enrich their married lives. Dr.Jayakumar Christian, former National director of World Vision and his wife Mrs. Vidhya Christian gave thought provoking talks on the purpose of the family and some useful tips on parenting. Mr. Glenn Carr from Chennai, an expert in finances and investment, discussed the current status of the Indian economy and its significance for families and gave valuable suggestions on how to manage the finances and the need to plan for investing the money in the right way. Mr.George Jacob and Mrs Susan George led the singing and also took a session on conflict resolution, sharing their own personal challenges and how they deal with conflicts in their marriage. Mr Ashok Vedanayagam coordinated the whole seminar with the team from Sishya. He spoke of the role of faith in God in marriage and Mrs Sheila Vedanayagam spoke on the role of prayer in the married life. The openness of facilitators to speak from their own struggles was refreshing and appreciated by all. It was clear that they were not preaching, but sharing their own stories and how they could overcome the challenges they faced. In addition to the talks, a significant time was spent on small group discussions with the men and women sitting in different small groups guided by a facilitator. The couples were given dedicated time to talk to each other alone and discuss their marriage. The seminar ended with the Sunday morning service, which was almost a reenactment of a wedding ceremony, with couples renewing their commitment to each other. The Division of Critical Care organized the ninth Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care (BASIC) course on 22nd and 23rd of June 2017. This internationally acclaimed instructor – provider training course has been designed and endorsed by the Chinese university of Hong Kong. Twenty six delegates from the departments of Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, Accident and Emergency and ICUs in CMC participated in the workshop. The faculty of Medical, Surgical and Neuro ICUs delivered a series of lectures in the mornings and taught at the hands-on skill stations in the afternoons covering many aspects of the care of critically ill Continued on Page 3

patients with an emphasis on supportive management, particularly mechanical ventilation. The topics included were airway management, ACLS, acute respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic monitoring, diagnosis and management of shock, trauma, severe sepsis, arrhythmias, transport of the critically ill and acid base disturbances. The workshop concluded with a certifying examination, and received commendable feedback. This course is conducted twice a year by the Division of Critical Care.
Mrs. Josephine Sukumar Retires Mrs. Josephine Sukumaran, Professor, College of Nursing retired on 28th June, 2017 after an exemplary service of 32 years in CMC Vellore. After completing her Diploma Nursing and Midwifery in 1980, Mrs. Josephine worked in Bethesda Hospital, Ambur for four years and then joined CMC Vellore as a staff nurse in the year 1985. She completed her Post Basic BSc Nursing programme in the year 1992. After completing her PBBSc. she continued to work as a ward in-charge and later in 2000, she went on to do M.Sc. in Nursing. She worked with an enduring ability with cheerfulness that was much required to care for patients with chronic physical disability in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. As a charge nurse, she demonstrated leadership qualities and mentored many junior nurses. She was a great team player, willing to adapt to changing needs of the department and the institution and was outstanding in keeping people together as a team. She was a role model to her nursing colleagues. In the year 2006, realizing her potentials, she was sent to UK on Senior training fellowship for three months to specialise in Rehabilitation Nursing for people with Head and spinal cord injuries. On her return, she took charge of the Rehabilitation Nursing Department and played a vital role in the renovation and extension of the Rehabilitation building as well as the rehabilitation services. She contributed significantly to the patient care in rehabilitation institute. Mrs. Josphine was instrumental in introducing the assessment tool “SMART”. She takes a significant role in the conduct of the Rehab Mela every year. She has taken initiative to teach rehabilitation nursing for students in Diploma, BSc, PBBSc, Post Diploma and MSc nursing courses. She was an excellent fundraiser and has participated actively in the “A” ward Christmas Cheer Fundraising sale every year. Mrs. Josphine is a God fearing person who worked diligently and with commitment throughout her service period. Her husband Mr. Stephen Sukumaran works as an accountant and manager in the Working Women’s Hostel of the CSI Vellore Diocese. Her elder daughter Mrs. Rita Janet is a Lecturer in Occupational Therapy Department, CMC Vellore. Ms. Soni Jane, her younger daughter, is a marketing researcher in TATA Consultancy, Chennai and her son Dr. Runal John Steeve, has completed his MD in Microbiology and has joined as a consultant in the Virology Department, CMC Vellore. As Mrs. Josephine moves to the next phase of her life the institution thanks her for her commendable services and wishes her and her family God’s Blessings.

Mr. Manokaran, Sr. Selection Grade Dental Chair-side Assistant, Department of Dental and Oral Surgery retired from service after a total of 34 years on 27th May 2017. He joined as a Dental Hygienist in 1981. He was the first candidate of the Dental Assistant Course in CMC ( 1998-99). He has a daughter Gracia, Son-in-law Mr. Paul and is blessed with two grand children. We are thankful for his services and wish him a blessed and happy retired life. Mrs. Lisha Roy, Staff Nurse Gr.I, retired on 1st June 2017 after 24 years of service in CMC. She worked in KN ward for 3 months and was posted in ‘O’ Block till date. Mrs. Lisha is a very calm and quiet person who is hard working and interested to keep learning. She was very good in patient care which was mentioned in many of her evaluations. She talks, shows concern and communicates very well with her patients.
