International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction for Nurses
The chief guest, Dr. Orapan Thosingha, Secretariat of APEDNN, Thailand spoke on the objectives of APEDNN. The guest of honour, Dr. Prakin Suchaxaya, Co-ordinator of Health Programmes, World Health Organisation (WHO), India and Dr. Ani Grace Kalaimathi, Registrar, Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, explained the role of WHO in Disaster Risk Reduction and emphasised the need for specialised Disaster Nursing Training in India respectively. The conference souvenir was released by Dr. Ani Grace Kalaimathi.
Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, during his felicitation, enlightened the gathering with the concept that Disaster Risk Reduction starts in each citizen’s mind, which is the need of the hour. Dr.Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent, remarked that the impact of this conference will definitely make a rippling effect on Disaster Risk Reduction. A total of 975 international and national delegates from 15 countries and 15 states of India participated in the conference. Continued on Page 2

he College of Nursing, Christian Medical College proudly hosted the first International Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction - Role of Health Care Providers along with Asia Pacific Emergency and Disaster Nursing Network (APEDNN) based on Sendai framework 2015-2030, on 17 th and 18 th November, 2016. Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean and Organising Chairperson of the conference, welcomed the gathering and stated that this conference would be momentous in creating a platform for sharing and exchanging ideas, networking to have better insights towards Disaster Risk Reduction.

Representatives from 15 countries walked down the aisle with their country flag and took the Disaster Risk Reduction pledge. Mr. T.S. Ravi Kumar, Organising Secretary, gave an overview of the conference and Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean and Organising Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. The first day of the conference had four plenary sessions on Disaster Risk Reduction - in which 13 eminent speakers in the field made presentations. A mass casualty management simulation co-ordinated by Mrs. Asha Solomon, was presented by 30 student nurses, who enacted a real life incident, well appreciated by the delegates. It ended with a cultural programme presented by the student nurses. The second day of the conference had five plenary sessions on Disaster Risk Reduction; 16 speakers shared their expertise in the plenary. The conference on the whole highlighted different facets of Disaster Risk Reduction – Concepts and Governance, Capacity Building, Disaster Preparedness, Response, Hazard Vulnerability Assessment, Bio-disasters, Psychosocial Implications of Disaster Management and Challenges for Future Disasters. 21 Scientific paper presentations and 31 poster presentations were presented during the conference and the 3 best papers and posters were awarded. Prof. Alice Yuen Loke, Secretariat of APEDNN, Hong Kong, chief guest for the valedictory ceremony, stressed the challenges in reducing the risk of disasters. With a vote of thanks by Mrs. Jeyalindha Christopher, Additional Deputy Dean and a word of prayer by Rev. Arul Dhas T, Chaplaincy, the conference drew to a close, proving to be a time of integration to all who participated.
Initiatives of Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training

The Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training Department of CMC was instituted on November 14, 2009, to assess and address the training requirements of the staff in CMC, using both intramural and extramural faculty under the headship of Dr. Samuel N.J. David. The department regularly carries out programmes such as: Institutional Induction Training for Doctors, Technicians, Support Service Staff; Mandatory training programmes for all staff to sustain NABH certification; BLS and ACLS programmes for all medical staff and those working in patient care areas; Managerial Advancement Programmes for all young MBA graduates; Continuing Engineering Education for all Engineering staff, In-Service Training programmes for all staff and Mission Outreach Work. In the last few months, the following programmes have been undertaken by the department: 3rd and 4th Managerial Advancement Programme (MAP) - 21st April and 28th May, 2016: Staff at the managerial level benefitted from this monthly workshop that targets areas of hospital administration and health systems management. The present healthcare scenario in India was explored and a comprehensive study of the feasibility of MAP at CMC and the Six Sigma methodology was facilitated. 13th to 19th In-Service Training Programmes – 16th to 18th March, 5th to 7th April, 1st to 3rd June, 2016, 7th to 9th June 2016, 8th to 10th August 2016, 26th to 28th September and 10th to 12th October, 2016 respectively: This programme, systemised for speakers of English and Tamil, was aimed at instilling Leadership and Personality Development at the technical, secretarial and clerical level, as well as Hospital and Housekeeping Attendants (close to 55 staff members per session). The team comprising Dr. Sunil Chandy, Dr. Samuel N.J. David, Rev. Dr. T. Arul Dhas, Dr. Rabi Raja Singh, Dr. Reginald Alex and Ms. Sonia Valas, along with external faculty, promoted the importance of positive energy at the workplace, family and society at large. Internship Programme for CMC’s Management students – 13th March to th 4 April, 2016: In a twofold bid to reach out to mission hospitals, while training management students, the MOVE (Management Orientation Visit & Education) – MAP (Management Assignment Programme) – MITE (Mission Hospital Internship Training & Education) approach was implemented. In fulfillment of a 5-month internship programme, 9 management students visited The Leprosy Mission Hospital, Uttar Pradesh and EHA’s Landour Community Hospital and Herbertpur Christian Hospital, Uttarakhand. Areas of improvement in these hospitals were identified through discussions with the respective administrative bodies and projects were identified for management interns to address in due course of time during their internship through MITE. At the end of the internship, the management interns received robust practical training with opportunities to dovetail theory with practical knowledge at mission hospitals. 2
46 th Early Management of Trauma Course for Doctors The Department of Accident and Emergency Medicine successfully completed the 46th Early Management of Trauma Course (EMTC) from 13th to 15th October, 2016. In total, 29 delegates participated in this two-and-a-half days’ course. This time the course was elevated to an international level with doctors from Afghanistan (Sponsored by International Red Cross) and from Sweden attending as participants, in addition to doctors from all over India. Initiated in 1997, this unique course is an indigenous programme, which is conceptualised, developed and validated by Christian Medical College, and is in fact, the first structured training programme for the Early Management of Trauma in India. This course is designed to provide hands-on experience in prioritisation and early management of trauma and comprises lectures, scenarios and skill-stations on various aspects of trauma evaluation and management. The next course will be open to all as before, tentatively in the month of March / April 2017, with a total of 3 to 4 courses planned for the year.
Congratulations! • Dr. Nihal Thomas, Professor & Head, Department of Endocrinology was honoured with the Prof. M. Vishwanathan Oration on 19th November, 2016 at the 44th RSSDI (Research Society for the Study in Diabetes) annual meeting at Hyderabad. The 57th Annual Conference of the Indian Society of Haematology and Blood Transfusion (ISHBT) was held from 10th to 13th November, 2016 at Jaipur. The following awards were won by our faculty and students: • Dr. Malti Sathe Oration award was given to Dr. Alok Srivastava for the topic Cure for Major Hemoglobin Disorders in India - The Journey so Far and The Way Foward. • Dr. Arunkumar, Dr. Jayastu Senapati and Ms. G. Sankari Devi, Sr. Sel. Grade Molecular Genetics Technician Grade-II received the first prize for the best oral presentation in their respective categories. • The CMC team represented by Dr. Anupama Janaki Krishnamoorthi (3rd Year in Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology), Dr. Georgie Mathew (3rd Year in Paediatrics), Dr. Akhil Rajendra (2nd Year in General Medicine) received the second prize at the All India Quiz Programme. • Dr. Shreyas Hanmantgad, 2nd year DM in Haematology.
Upcoming Event Christmas Cheer Carnival and Hospital Day 2016 will be held on 2nd and 3rd December, 2016 on the Hospital Premises. Inauguration will be held at 8.30 a.m. on 2nd December, 2016 in front of Electricals. Several schools have expressed interest to visit the stalls. Please ensure that the stalls are set up the previous day evening itself (1st December, 2016). After the inauguration, the chief guest and team will visit all the stalls. Retirements Mr. K. Mohan, Sr. Gr.I Driver, Ophthalmology, retired on 15th November, 2016 following 28 years of service to the institution. He joined CMC on 28th June, 1988. His wife, Saroja, Hospital Attendant, took voluntary retirement from the institution and subsequently entered into eternity. Their son, Mr. Jayakumar is a Hospital Attendant in Ortho Plaster Room and their daughter, Ms. Vani Kavitha has completed B.Sc. Nursing in Chennai.
