The Shalom Family Medicine Centre celebrated God’s faithfulness in completing its first year of functioning on the 21st of July at a brief time of prayer and thanksgiving. The centre was started to meet the demands of the people of Vellore for increased access to the services of CMC. Located close to the Raymond show room, it functions from 8 am to 8 pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 8 am to 5 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and, till noon on Saturdays. With electronic medical records, online prescriptions and investigations, the centre has been completely paperless from day one. Only patients from Vellore are registered there and they have to come with a proof of residence when they come for the first time. Patients who have already been registered in the main hospital are seen as repeat registrations with the same number. The Shalom Dental clinic run by Dental Unit 1 has been well appreciated by the patients who come there. The centre has a lab collection area for collecting samples which are sent to the main hospital laboratory. There is a 4 bedded treatment room for minor procedures and short stay for a few hours if needed. The unit also has a well stocked pharmacy. Along with the Family Medicine specialists, a Nurse Practitioner is also available every afternoon to help patients manage chronic diseases and educate them about various health issues. The chaplain visits on Tuesdays and has been involved in counselling patients and their families. The unit served 30,357 patients till the end of June 2015, handled 33,674 prescriptions, performed 3551 procedures and sent 17,403 samples to the main hospital laboratory. We are grateful to the grace of the Lord Jesus who provided for us and the help from many in the institution to make this possible.

OBITUARIES Mr. Jeffrey Solomon and Mr. Joel Rajkumar, MBBS Batch of 2012 passed away on July 13, 2015. Mr. Jeffrey Solomon was a man of value and one of the hardest people to fit into a single piece of paper. As a batch, there’s so much we owe him for all the things he taught us. He was honest, sincere, dedicated and compassionate. He would have made one of the best doctors from CMC. He attended classes not as a ritual but was there to know how to save lives and make a difference. All this, while still being one of the coolest, most popular and talented guys in our class. It was this popularity and Mr. Jeffrey Solomon Mr. Joel Rajkumar talent that earned him posts in school, our class and in hostel, all of which he handled in a calm, composed and sensible manner. His creativity and brilliance shone through in everything he did without him even having to try. For those of you that attended the services over this past week, you would have noticed that the biggest impact Jeffrey made was by being the most caring and selfless friend most of us could have asked for. Even though he was a little shy at first, it didn’t take us long to learn that he had the biggest heart and reached out to people when they needed it most. Whether it was just lending an ear, finding every possible way to make us laugh, helping us look at things from a more logical perspective or teaching us the essentials the night before an exam, Jeffrey made time for his friends even when they didn’t ask. He was always the first person to help and the last person to judge. Jeffrey was fun-loving, always ready for adventure and lived life to the fullest without losing sight of his principles. His fear of the Lord was evident in the way he lived his life and he has been an inspiration to many, touching lives in one way or another. Although this loss has left a wound that nobody can ever repair, Jeffrey has left us with memories that nobody can ever steal and we will always love and miss him. Mr. Joel Rajkumar was an affectionate, gentle and caring young man. He was a wonderful friend to all of us in the batch and to so many others. He was a good listener, so you’d have to take the effort to start that conversation. He’d only make polite conversation to start with, not revealing much, but should you discuss things he’s passionate about, he’d explode into a rich conversation, and the silent guy he was would be replaced by a talkative young gentleman. He has helped his friends in many ways but did it ever so quietly and humbly. In areas of competition, Joel usually pushed himself to his limits to achieve his own standard of perfection, be it music or sports. He had a good talent for musical instruments especially the guitar. He had a wonderful voice and sang several times in the Scudder Auditorium. Joel had a passion for sports especially hockey. He was the college hockey captain and he raised the level of the game in CMC. He was very affectionate to his family and would spend much time talking to his parents and sister. Spending time with Joel would reveal that he was a gentle and loving person and you’d realize there was so much more to him than first impressions. Joel will be missed dearly but wonderful memories of him will always comfort us. We thank God for the lives of Jeffrey and Joel and believe they are with Him in eternal glory. Let us continue to uphold the families of Jeffrey, Joel and the MBBS Batch of 2012 in our prayers. Mr. Veslie Premkumar, Sel. Gr. III Pharmacist who worked in Level III OP Pharmacy, passed away on July 19, 2015. He finished Diploma in Pharmacy in 1999 from Thanjavur Medical College and joined CMC in 2000 as the first batch of students in Diploma in Hospital Pharmacy Practice. He was the Best Out-going student for this course. He subsequently joined as Staff in 2001 and has served in the OP Pharmacy, M Ward Pharmacy and A9 Pharmacy. In 2002 he was awarded the best Pharmacist award and in 2014 the best Dispensing Pharmacist award. He was a cheerful, committed and hardworking staff. His wife, Mrs. Shirley Mariam is presently doing PC B.Sc. Nursing. Let us uphold his wife, parents and family members in our prayers.

The Department of Clinical Virology has been re-accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) for the next two years till June 2017. 2-day workshops on “Good Start Practices (GSP) for CD4+T cell estimation and blood collection” for the laboratory technologists from ART Centres in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala were held on 22nd & 23rd and 24th & 25th June 2015 in two batches. A total of 46 Technologists from various ART centres have participated in this workshop which was jointly organized by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), BD India and Department of Clinical Virology, CMC. CR OSS ARM NEUR O TIZA TION IN AN AMPUTEE WITH CONTRALA TERAL BRA CHIAL PLEXUS CROSS NEURO TIZATION CONTRALATERAL BRACHIAL INJUR Y: A NO VEL SUR GIC AL TECHNIQUE INJURY NOVEL SURGIC GICAL The surgeons at the Dr. Paul Brand Centre for Hand Surgery, CMC Hospital, Vellore recently performed a novel technique to reinnervate the upper limb of a patient with left brachial plexus injury who had also sustained a below elbow amputation of the right upper limb. The patient Mr. R, a 25 year old economically disadvantaged electrician, sustained electrical shock while at work and fell from a tall building, sustaining severe electric burns to his right upper limb as well as a brachial plexus injury to the left hand along with head injury. He was initially treated at a corporate hospital in Chennai and underwent amputation of his right upper limb. He came to vellore with severe infection in the left upper limb as well as the stump. The combination of injuries left Mr. R totally dependent on others for all activities of daily living. Once the infection settled, it was decided to transfer the median and ulnar nerves of the amputated right hand to innervate the left upper limb. Professor Binu P. Thomas and his colleagues in the Hand Surgery Department performed this novel microsurgical anastomosis by an arduous 10 hour surgical procedure. Such a procedure has not been previously reported in the medical literature. By the grace of God, this surgery will help Mr. R to get back to independent productive life. In continuation of our previous week’s report, we are pleased that there is a 24% increase in use of the Cochrane Library during January - June 2015, in comparison to the same period of last year. India also recorded the 3rd highest number of full text downloads in the first six months of 2015 compared with other countries with a funded national provision. Of course, its credit goes to Cochrane South Asia team’s hard work at CMC, Vellore. Clinicians, health policy makers, students, researchers, media and health-service providers may visit the Cochrane Library www.cochranelibrary.com for high quality evidence. Given along side is the breakdown of visits to Cochrane Library during the first-half of this year.
