Asha, Associate Professor, Department of Endocrinology, on her return from study leave.
This came in recognition of the department’s “multi-professional approach and use of blended learning with some really innovative approaches,” as observed by the panel of judges. Having catered diabetes patient care, training, education, basic science, clinical and epidemiological research, the department has also advanced a nation-wide training programme for doctors, nurse educators and foot-care technicians since 2003, which in the following year, was developed into a distance education programme. The department has undertaken initiatives to train healthcare professionals at national and international levels, and has launched an intense local training programme on foot care and footwear. Such efforts have proven to be prolific,
with 736 trained doctors in secondary care of diabetes (from the distance education programme), and several more benefiting from its other courses on offer, such as the diabetes counselor training programme, extensive CMEs, higher specialty training programmes, diabetes fellowship programmes, and the publication of The Practical Manual of Diabetes, with as many as 60,000 copies in circulation. It has been noted that the number of trained professionals qualified to handle the diabetes epidemic has grown tremendously by the agency of the department. This has earned the department the distinction of being the only medical team outside the United Kingdom to win in any of the categories of these awards this year. The award [Image on right] was presented at a formal ceremony to Professor Nihal Thomas at the town hall in Manchester, United Kingdom on the occasion the annual academic conference of the Royal College of Physicians.

Department of Psychiatric Nursing gathers Nurses of Tamil Nadu to discuss Child and Adolescent Health The Departments of Psychiatric Nursing and the Continuing Nursing Education together surveyed ‘Child and Adolescent Mental Health Nursing’ in a one-day workshop held on 10 th March, 2017. This workshop was inaugurated by Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing, and Dr. Premila Lee, Nursing Superintendent. The workshop facilitated a focused understanding of attachment, parenting skills, psychological trauma, impact of electronic media, empowering adolescents, the Juvenile Justice Act, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, suicide among adolescents, and common psychiatric problems among children and adolescents. The programme also featured a panel discussion which analysed the nursing care of children with neurodevelopment delay, eating disorders, emotional disorders and substance use disorders. Skill stations were set up to enhance skills on suicide assessment, identifying abnormal behaviours and behavioural strategies, to modify them. The CNE was attended by 50 nurses from various parts of Tamil Nadu who found the workshop a valuable learning experience. 7 credit hours were awarded for this one-day workshop by the Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council.
Congratulations! • At the 54th National Conference of Indian Academy of Paediatrics (PEDICON 2017) held from 18th to 22nd January, 2017 in Bangalore: The paper titled “Assessment and Analysis of sensory processing disorders of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” authored by Beena Koshy, Suman Bhattacharyya, Lincy Glory, Hannah Grace, Caroline Padankatti of Developmental Paediatrics, was presented as Free Paper (oral) and was placed first in the Free Paper Neurodevelopment Category. The paper titled “Association of Microcephaly at two time periods (at birth and at 18 – 24 months) and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in a cohort of Very Low Birth weight infants in India” authored by Samuel P. Oommen, Santhanam Sridhar, Atanu K. Jana, Reeba Roshan, Caroline Padankatti, Hannah Grace, Hima John, Niranjan Thomas, Manish Kumar and K. Anil Kuruvilla of Developmental Paediatrics and Neonatology, was presented as Free Paper (oral) and was awarded 1st prize in the Free Paper - Neonatology Category. • Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, Dean, College of Nursing has been elected an Executive Committee member of Global Network of WHO Collaborative Centre for Nursing and Midwifery from the SEARO region, for a term of 4 years from 2016 - 2020.

Allied Health Sciences Sports Day took place on 4th March, 2017 at the Oval Ground, Bagayam. It was formally declared open by Dr. Judy Ann John, Vice-Principal (AHS). Dr. Nitin S. Kekre, Professor and Head, Urology-II, was the chief guest at the event and awarded the prize-winners of the day.

(c) Sponsorship is allowed from only one sponsoring body, so children applying for C.M.C. sponsorship cannot also be sponsored by one of the supporting Churches of the Council. (d) Where there is more than one sponsorship obtained, the one received first which satisfies the criteria will be accepted. (e) No withdrawal of first received valid sponsorship is allowed. Staff children, even with CMC sponsorship, must still meet the minimum academic qualifications for the courses for which they are applying. Staff are urged to check the prospectus to ensure the eligibility of their children for the various courses before submitting their applications.
