After a baby is detected to have hearing loss, they are called for a retest by these technicians and counselled. Eventually, they are examined in the ENT OPD by a specialist. The goal is to correctly identify and fit babies who require intervention, with hearing aids by the age of 5-6 months, thus maximising their chances for integration into mainstream education. Dental Unit – I was honoured with a Skoch Award for its Tobacco Cessation Programme. Tobacco-related diseases are almost an epidemic in India. Our country records the world’s largest incidence of oral cancer, a tobacco-related condition in more than 80% of cases. Since these diseases are preventable, Dental Unit-I set into motion a Tobacco Cessation Programme, for the prevention and management of oral precancerous conditions in 2010. The USP of the programme, as identified by the Skoch Jury, is that all patients attending the clinic are screened for tobacco use and its oral effects. Tobacco users receive counselling, which may range from OPD chair-side counselling using visual aids, to group counselling over several days (assisted by the Lifestyle Medicine Department). Since its initiation, more than 3400 patients have been counselled. Till date, 2290 patients have made a commitment to stop the habit. However, not all keep their commitment. For this reason, telephonic follow-up for encouragement and review of compliance is carried out by the Unit Dentists, helped by a Chaplain. Patients with precancerous conditions, like leukoplakia, are followed up clinically and found to respond well to tobacco cessation (which is monitored by Nicotine testing of urine samples).
Haematology and Pathology conduct 2nd Basic Course in Molecular Diagnostics Continued from Page 1 Participants from various academic, research institutions and private labs across the country and two staff members from CMC attended the workshop. The programme was designed to start with basic molecular techniques (DNA/ RNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis) and progressed to include more advanced methods (Real time PCR, Sequencing, Digital Droplet PCR and NGS). Application of these techniques in the diagnosis of inherited and acquired haematological diseases and solid tumors was emphasised. The course also included lectures by internal and external resource persons. Dr. Anita Nadkarni, Scientist-E and Deputy Director, NIIH, Mumbai participated as the external faculty. This training was aimed at aiding participants in establishing and performing similar assays in their respective centres.
CMC dedicates new Emergency Medical Facility at Katpadi Railway Station The new CMC Emergency Medical Facility at Katpadi Railway Station was dedicated on 20th September, 2016. Medical Superintendent, Dr. C. E. Eapen, addressed the gathering at this ceremony, highlighting similarities between CMC and Railways. Following this, Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy gave an overview of the facility and assured that it would help patients commuting by train from different parts of the country. Mr. Maheshwaran, Station Manager, offered felicitations and said they as a team were grateful to CMC for its services to patients. Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj especially thanked the Katpadi Railway officials and in-house staff who helped make this facility a reality. An Emergency Team posted at the facility will provide first aid for train-travelling patients. The institution is grateful to Dr. Premila Lee and Team for accepting to post nurses round the clock and also for making the SOP for emergency medical care at this facility. The Emergency Medical Facility will function 24 x 7.

On 19th September, 2016, 2 new Tata 55-seater buses were dedicated in the Transport Department, with a devotional song and a prayer of dedication by Rev. Rainard Pearson of the Chaplaincy Department. Mr. M. Anbarasu of the Transport Department welcomed the gathering and introduced the new facility, following which the Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy offered his felicitations in the presence of Associate Director, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, General Superintendent, Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj, Vice Principal, Dr. Solomon Sathishkumar, staff and students. Retirements Mrs. Annie Gnana Jothi, Training Section Assistant Gr.I, Nambikkai Nilayam, retired on 8th August, 2016, after rendering 31 years of service since 1985, when she joined CMC. Her husband, Mr. S. Michael retired from the Audio Visual Unit of the institution. Their elder son, Mr. Jawahar Anto is an Electrician in CMC and their younger son, Mr. Praveen Raja is a Pharmacist at the Community Health Department. Mr. K. Rajendiran, Hospital Housekeeping Attendant, Gr. I, Hospital Annexe, who became a part of the institution in 1980, completed 36 years of service on 2nd September, 2016, when he retired. He has two sons and a daughter. His daughter, Mrs. Geetha Priya is a Staff Nurse in Schell Hospital. The CMC Community extends to them its thanks and wishes them a fulfilled retirement.
