Dr. Anila Korula Retires
supervised and actively participated in the postgraduate teaching programmes held daily in the Department of Pathology. She has also held weekly inter-departmental sessions for D.M. Nephrology trainees and consultants, and has been a faculty at several nephropathology meetings, workshops and slide seminars both within and outside our institution, as well as in the recent lung carcinoma preceptorship workshop. She was earlier involved in organising the Pathology teaching programme for paramedical students. Dr. Korula has guided and mentored M.D. and D.M. postgraduates in their theses and university examinations. She has been an undergraduate and postgraduate examiner in CMC and other medical colleges in Chennai affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. Dr. Korula has published several articles in reputed journals, both national as well as international. She has recently authored a book, “Renal biopsy Interpretation: Current Perspectives� which will be a valuable resource for pathology and nephrology trainees and faculty who are involved in this discipline.
Dr. Anila is a meticulous histopathologist with an eye for detail. Her patient and persistent approach to diagnostic histopathology has inspired many of her younger colleagues. Her professionalism and her continuing and eager interest in keeping abreast of the latest developments in the various branches of histopathology are noteworthy. Her expertise in nephropathology and cardiovascular and pulmonary pathology will be sorely missed. She has a deep faith and has nurtured and supported many of her colleagues. She has managed a perfect work-life balance and her heart lies at the centre of her loving family. Dr. Anila’s husband, Dr. Roy Korula retired a few years ago as the Head of Thoracic Surgery. Her son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Prithish and Sophy Korula, from the 1998 M.B.B.S. batch are both faculty in CMC. Her daughter, Ashika and husband Harsha Mathew are settled in Kerala. We praise and thank God for her commitment to our institution and wish her good health and much happiness as she begins another phase of life.

r. Anila Korula completed her MBBS from the Madras Medical College and joined our institution in 1981 as a post graduate trainee in the Norman Institute of Pathology. She continued to work in the department upon completion of her post graduate training in 1984 and served in CMC for over 32 years. Dr. Korula was the Head of the Department of Pathology from 2006 to 2010, during which time she initiated the setting up of the Molecular Pathology and FISH laboratories. Dr. Korula is a highly skilled renal pathologist who has been involved in the reporting of kidney biopsies including kidney transplant biopsies for the past 26 years. Several pathologists who are recognised as able renal pathologists elsewhere, have been trained by her. Her other areas of interest include cardiac, lung and paediatric pathology, in which she gained experience during her time in Australia and New Zealand from 1987 to 1989, and later, in 1996. She has been involved in teaching Pathology to under-graduate and postgraduate students throughout her time in the department. She has

remember last year we had to call off our Christmas celebrations to express solidarity with the victims of Chennai floods. This year too, we are saddened by the passing of our late chief minister and the devastation left behind by the cyclone few days ago. The transition to a cashless culture is a new experience which has come this Christmas season. In this wet and wilted environment, what is it we must feel and do this Christmas in 2016?

Turning of the Sod at CMC's Kannigapuram Site Envisioned years ago, the Kannigapuram Services and Educational Facility of CMC broke ground at the site of construction on 20th December, 2016, in the presence of Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy, Associate Director (Admin) Dr. Anil Kuruvilla, Council Chairman, Dr. M.C. Matthew, Vice Chairman, Dr. Sanjeeth Peter, Medical Superintendent, Dr. C.E. Eapen, Principal, Dr. Anna Pulimood, Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee, Dean, College of Nursing, Dr. Selva Titus Chacko, General Superintendent, Mr. Ebinezar Sunderraj. It was a time of looking back and looking ahead for the CMC community that gathered to prayerfully reflect on the project at hand. The need for this upcoming facility was felt particularly in 2005, during the directorship of Dr. George Chandy, when it was first addressed. At the ceremony celebrating this soon-to-be establishment, Dr. Sunil Chandy acknowledged that it was an emotional moment for the collective family of CMC, particularly those who have been directly responsible for carrying forward the plan. “This is a statement from God that He continually engages with us,” he said, speaking of the favour of the Almighty that brought about timely sanctions and goodwill ambassadors. He extended his thanks to the General and Medical Superintendent’s offices, the staff of various support services and the Executive and Finance Committees, for staying dedicated to the undertaking. Dr. Chandy then urged the institution to be joyful of its pioneering accomplishments towards social welfare, thankful for the opportunities that have rendered CMC a substantial instrument in the healing ministry and prayerful concerning potential challenges that lay in its journey forward. Dr. M.C. Matthew and Dr. George Chandy, former Director of CMC, both key individuals in this project, turned the first sod, setting in motion the construction of what will soon be CMC’s latest campus. Dr. Matthew expressed his hope that CMC will continue to transcend beyond its technological advancements and credentials to remain a testimony of God’s work. Dr. George Chandy noted that CMC has reached the height of trust and legacy where, the more it expands, the more it will be flocked by people with needs. Dr. Sanjeeth Peter voiced his belief that this latest facility would represent three things: a dwelling place of the living God, an altar that nurtures all who approach it, and the centennial aggregate of the institution’s services, student training, outreach and advocacy earned from patients. The CMC Kannigapuram facility is expected to be the model project for Tamil Nadu, in that the replication of its design within the state will be permitted. By the time the facility is erected, CMC will have seen its milestone of one hundred years of medical education.

Comprehensive reports of their beginnings in CMC, accolades and initiatives contributed to the institution were read out by the appointing authorities, making for a representation of long-standing career curves.

Founder’s Day is observed in CMC on the birthday of Dr. Ida Scudder, in appreciation of services rendered by the retired staff of that year. This time, in remembrance of her 146th birthday, the programme took place on 21st December at the Ida Scudder Auditorium, where Dr. Anand Job, retired Head, ENT Department, presided as the guest of honour. Dr. Job in his address to the gathering, likened CMC’s growth to that of a tree – the seed of a single-bed dispensary in 1900 has now branched out into an extensive network of campuses owing to the dedication of its staff.

The Ninth Professor Benjamin M Pulimood Oration The Department of Medicine and Infectious Diseases organised the ‘9 th Professor Benjamin M Pulimood Oration’ on 2nd December, 2016. Dr. Pulimood is remembered by the Department of Medicine, as a remarkable teacher and clinician, by his patients as a compassionate physician, and by the institution as an extraordinary person with impeccable moral and ethical values. Dr. O.C. Abraham welcomed the gathering to this programme and the Principal, Dr. Anna Pulimood and Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy offered felicitations. The topic chosen for this year’s oration, Tuberculous meningitis, has perplexed clinicians for decades with regard to diagnosis and management and India has recorded the largest number of tuberculosis cases. Professor Guy Thwaites, Director, Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU), Vietnam, was chosen to deliver this oration. Dr. Thwaites trained in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in the UK. The oration was much appreciated as evidenced by the packed Wheeler Hall.
New Catheterisation Laboratory Dedicated The new Catheterisation Laboratory was dedicated for patient care in the old library area at the Cardiology Office on 13th December, 2016. This will replace the old mobile lab which used to be the Cardiac Electrophysiology Lab.

Rehabilitation Institute Celebrates its Golden Jubilee The Department of Physical Medicine Rehabilitation (PMR) celebrated the Golden Jubilee of the Mary Verghese Institute of Rehabilitation on 26th November, 2016. On this day in 1966, the Institute was inaugurated by the Union Minister of Health, Dr. Sushila Nayyar. Dr. Mary Verghese, who was a student of the 1946 batch of MBBS, suffered spinal cord injury following a road traffic accident which led to paraplegia, leaving her wheelchair-bound. She was treated by Dr. Paul Brand, the then Head of Orthopaedics and was sent for rehabilitation under Sir George Bedbrooke in Australia, where she was trained to be independent using a wheelchair. On her return to India, she found that there were no centres of rehabilitation in the country and took up the challenge to pursue her studies in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation under Dr Howard Rusk, New York, USA. With Diplomate of American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the highest postgraduate qualification in this speciality, she returned to Vellore and started the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at CMC, Vellore and subsequently the Rehabilitation Institute in 1966. Soon, patients from all over India started coming to meet her to get treated and rehabilitated. Popularly known as ‘The Surgeon on Wheelchair’, she was a source of inspiration and strength to all who came to her for treatment. For her pioneering work, the nation honoured Dr. Mary with a Padma Shri award in 1972. The institute that began with two rooms admitting 16 patients, now has 83 beds and treats about 900 patients annually. Patients with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, children with cerebral palsy and amputees are admitted for rehabilitation. Apart from doctors and nurses, the multidisciplinary team includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, social workers, engineers and prosthetists and orthotists. The institute has been designated as the WHO collaborating centre for development of Rehabilitation technology, Capacity Building and Disability prevention. It has a gait lab, Urodynamics lab, vocational rehabilitation programme and community rehab programme. Sports activities are an interesting feature of the rehab programme and several former patients have won laurels in the state and national scene. Pursuit of a cure for Spine injuries and reports of cell transplantation at several centres led the department to institute a Spinal Cord Regeneration Laboratory at Rehab Institute, which was supported by the Department of Bio Technology. Follow up of patients is organised through annual Rehab Melas, monthly support groups and regular home visits.
To commemorate the journey over the last 5 decades, a coffee table book titled You Raise Me Up to More Than I Can Be, compiled and written by Dr. Pippa Deodhar, was released by the Principal, Dr. Anna Pulimood during the function. This book gives a good understanding of the institute and narrates stories of patients who have been rehabilitated to understand what rehabilitation means in real life.

At the Golden Jubilee celebration, Dr. Suranjan Bhattacharji, former Director and former Head of PMR, recounted the journey of the Rehabilitation Institute over 50 years. Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director, Dr. P Zacharia, former Head of Physiology, Dr. Vinitha Ravindran, Deputy Dean and Mrs. Ruma Nayak, Deputy Nursing Superintendent gave their felicitations. Mrs. Susy Koshy, Mrs. Anna Jacob John and Mrs. Anna Zachariah, who played a crucial role in helping Dr. Mary set up the facility, as well as artist Suresh, were honoured during the ceremony.
The plaque for a new Golden Jubilee floor was also unveiled at during programme, by Dr. Sunil Chandy. This was followed by a tree planting ceremony in gratitude of all who worked and currently work in the department. A refurbished canteen in the campus was dedicated by General Superintendent, Mr. Ebinezer Sundarraj. The celebration was well attended by retired staff and alumni of Rehab. 5
CMC College of Nursing turns two-time champion at Quiz Competition The annual Zenith Quiz on Mental Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing and general knowledge was conducted by PSG College of Nursing, Coimbatore, on 2nd December, 2016. Two teams from the CMC College of Nursing participated in the quiz. Among 32 teams from various colleges of South India, both CMC teams bagged first and second places. This is a winning streak by the College of Nursing, which secured the first place in this competition last year as well. CMC grooves its way to fitness! Zumba is a vigorous, dance-based Columbian workout regime that can help burn about 500 to 1000 calories in a one-hour session, depending upon the intensity. CMC introduced this fitness programme within its community in 2015, and it has become an engaging health trend since. Mr. Platinie Paul, a ZIN-certified Zumba instructor for adults and children conducts classes at the Community hall in the Hospital Campus on Wednesdays from 6 to 7 pm. Zumba for children is customised with games and activities into the dance routine. The Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism, who observed Diabetes Week recently, also incorporated Zumba into their programme and classes were conducted in Vidyalayam, and Ida Scudder School to make children aware of the importance of physical exercise early and through an enjoyable approach. Multi-Level Car Parking Facility for CMC Staff Installed The Multi-Level Car Parking Lot with 62 car slots was dedicated at the Centenary Grounds on 5th November, 2016. Mr. Jayasankar, Senior Engineer and Head, Planning, briefed the gathering about the inception of this facility and revealed that this parking lot is the first of its kind in Vellore. Director, Dr. Sunil Chandy felicitated the gathering and inaugurated the facility in the presence ofAssociate Director (Admin), Dr.Anil Kuruvilla, Medical Superintendent, Dr. C.E. Eapen, and Nursing Superintendent, Dr. Premila Lee. Mr. Ebinezar Sundarraj, General Superintendent (Ag), in his closing remarks extended his thanks to the Administration for their support and the Engineering Departments comprising Planning, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical, for setting up this state-of-the-art facility.
