Understanding the burden of oral cancers in India, he took up Head and Neck surgery. Under his leadership the Head and Neck surgery services has shown significant growth from a subspecialty in a surgical unit to a separate department providing individualised, modern care to patients with oral cancer. Well known for his meticulous planning and attention to detail, he introduced many innovative methods of surgical teaching and evaluation in the department during his tenure as the Head of the Department from 2010 – 2012 and 2015 to till his superannuation.
He spent three years in Essex, UK, on study leave under the Overseas Doctors Training Programme of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was subsequently inducted as the honorary Fellow of Royal College of Surgeon’s of Edinburgh in 2008.
Dr. Muthusami’s contributions to the institution are immense and he has brought in various valuable and innovative development. He has played a major role through the important posts that he has held within the institution. He had served as the Chairman of the Outpatient

r. John C. Muthusami, Professor of Surgery, superannuated on 29 th August, 2017 after nearly thirty years of dedicated and selfless service to the institution. He joined CMC Vellore as a medical student in the year 1974. After internship, he completed his service obligation at the Dr. Joseph Eye hospital, Trichy. On completion of his postgraduate training in general surgery, he worked at the Swedish Mission Hospital at Thirupathur following which he joined the Department of Surgery as faculty in 1989.

Apart from his administrative skills and contributions he has several publications and scientific paper presentations to his credit and is also a member of various scientific societies. Dr . Muthusami was loved and respected by all his students, faculty and co-workers . A person of dynamic and lofty thoughts together with his endearing personality has influenced and mentored many medical undergraduates, postgraduates, nursing and allied health students. Mrs. Renita Muthusami, his wife, recently retired as Principal from Ida Scudder School. Their elder son Jehrom works at Chennai as software professional and Joel, their younger son, works as an administrator, also at Chennai. CMC is indebted to Dr. John C. Muthusami for his service and contributions to the institution. May God give him the best of everything in every phase of his life.
Third Basic Course in Molecular Diagnostics The Department of Haematology and the Department of Pathology jointly conducted the “3rd Basic Course in Molecular Diagnostics”, all day hands-on training workshop between 28th August to 8th of September 2017. Molecular diagnostics have become an essential part of investigations required in providing optimal care and has become an important tool for the health care provider in making the right decisions. However, considering the dearth of trained personnel in this area, the course focussed on training participants from various academic, research institutions and private labs and from various parts of the country. The programme was designed to start with basic molecular techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis) and progressed to include more advanced methods (Real time PCR, Sequencing, Digital Droplet PCR and NGS). Application of these techniques in the diagnosis of inherited and acquired hematological diseases and solid tumors was emphasized. This training is designed to aid the participants in establishing and performing similar assays in their respective centers. This course also included lectures by internal and external resource persons and also included a lecture on “Next Generation Human Genetics: from Lab to Clinics” by Dr. Arindam Maitra, Associate Professor, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), Kalyani and West Bengal on the penultimate day.

The inaugural ceremony was held on 28th August. The devotion was led by the Chaplain Ms.Saramma Kuruvilla. The dignitaries present at the workshop were the Nursing Superintendent Dr. Premila Lee, Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Rajiv Michael, Addl.Deputy Nursing Superintendent Mrs. Regina Xavier, HICC Secretary Dr. Joy Sarojini Michael, Addl. Joint Secretary HICC Mrs. Ilavarasi Jesudoss and HICC officer Dr. Dhana Lakshmi. Aims and objectives of the course were explained at the outset, with a pretest for participants. The Office of the Nursing Superintendent, in collaboration with the Hospital Infection Control Committee, successfully conducted their 4th Short Course for Nurses of Mission, private and Government hospitals from 28th August to 2nd September, 2017. The course was designed as an update on knowledge and skills pertaining to Hospital Infection Control, through lectures, practical sessions, group discussions, skill demonstration, field and Microbiology laboratory visits by Medical and Nursing faculty. The Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai awarded 27 credit hours to the participants. A total of 45 delegates registered, representing 24 different hospitals from 8 states across India.

There were visits to Wards, CSSD, Laundry, Waste disposal sites, OR, ICUs, Microbology Lab and joint replacement room followed by demonstration in methods of environmental surveillance, detection of antibiotic resistance and testing in the Microbiology laboratory. Participants proceeded to set goals for implementation of standards in their respective hospitals. A post-test qualified all participants for certification. Her husband Mr.D.Narasimhan works as Hospital Attendant in Thoracic Surgery Office. Her son Mr.N.Sanjay Kumar is working in Apollo Hospital, Karaikudi and her daughter Ms. N. Ramya, is working as Staff Nurse in Accident & Emergency Department. Mr. G. Baskaran, Hospital Attendant Gr.I, Electrical Department retired on 5th September, 2017 after 32 years of dedicated service to the institution. He has three daughters and a son. The eldest daughter Mrs. Kavitha is a Staff Nurse in Neuro Ward and son Mr. Yuvaraj is a Junior Engineer in C.S.S.D. CMC community is grateful for their dedicated service and wishes them a joyous and peaceful retirement.
