Alongside the entertainment, the sports field was abuzz with activity including basketball, badminton, football, volleyball, hockey, tennis and other indoor activities like carroms and chess. The overall championship for sports was bagged by CMC and for cultural events by Sasthra University, Chennai. Pegasus 2017, organized by the batch of 2014 was a perfect platform for students to prove their strength in extracurricular activities. Congratulations to the organizing batch of 2014!

he annual inter-collegiate sports, arts and cultural fest ‘Pegasus’ for the year 2017 was held between 12th to 15th July at the College Campus, Bagayam. It was declared open by the principal Dr. Anna B. Pulimood. The programme was infused with a number of events from music, dance, drama and sports. Students from various universities came in to witness the excellent display of talents and creativity. This year saw new varieties in events and the audience were particularly enthralled by the play “The Park” and the music band “ Girish and the Chronicles”. The standup comedy and the DJ night was also a crowd puller. The rest of the days saw a string of informal events including laser tag, human football, and life sized Jenga and so on. The students and the audience were thoroughly entertained by these games and fun activities.

Educational Initiatives
Second National Symposium on Therpaeutic Drug Monitoring The 2 nd National Symposium on Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, with a pre-symposium workshop was organized by the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology from 10th- 13th July 2017, in conjunction with the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring and Clinical Toxicology. The symposium was organised as a tribute to Dr Denny Fleming who will be leaving to the UK after having contributed immensely to the department and the institution since 1998. The central focus of the symposium was on the significance of Thiopurine Methyl Transferase monitoring and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) of antibiotics, immunosuppressant and anti-cancer drugs for cost effective drug management. The symposium was well attended by a variety of delegates including pharmacologists, pharmacists, PhD scholars and clinicians from different medical colleges and hospitals in India and international experts, Dr Michael Neely (USA), Dr. Maria Shipkova and Prof Eberhard Wieland (Germany), Dr Gareth Veal (UK) and Prof Deborah Marriott (Australia). The pre-symposium workshop provided an overview into pharmacokinetic/ pharmacodynamics data presentation and pharmacometric approach to dose optimisation. The symposium concluded with various interactive sessions which grasped the attention and interest of all the participants. It was a great learning experience and an encouragement for other colleges and hospitals to initiate similar TDM Units in their own departments.
2 nd Certificate course on Psychiatric Hospital Infection Stewardship Workshop on "Essential Skills inControl ClinicalAntimicrobial Practice" A CME titled “Essential Psychiatric Skills in Clinical Practice” was organized by the Department of Psychiatry Unit II on 15th July, 2017 as an academic exercise in honor of Dr. Prathap Tharyan’s contribution to the Department and the Institution. The workshop provided a deep insight into understanding the physician- patient relationship, the role of non-specific factors, assessment of rating scales in clinical practice, use of analogies in psycho education and recognizing and managing depression in general practice. The participants included doctors, postgraduates, and students from allied health. Five credit points were awarded to this programme by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.

MEDICAL ONCOLOGY DAY CARE II
On 13th July, 2017 the Medical Oncology Day Care service was extended with the addition of a six-couch air conditioned facility. This is located in the vicinity of the older and well used day care room which has been working beyond capacity for the last 15 years. This has been a dream come true for several patients who wait for as long as 2 weeks to get their scheduled chemotherapy infusion. The facility was formally dedicated to the glory of God and the service of patients in the presence of Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director and other administrators, members from support services and the Medical Oncology family.

Retirements Mr. Mathew Asirvatham, Senior Selection Grade Training Officer, RUHSA Department retired on July 16th, 2017 after thirty four years of devoted service to Christian Medical College. Mr. Mathew was a passionate teacher, a kind and friendly person, someone who loved RUHSA and CMC with his entire being. He joined RUHSA in 1983, as a junior Assistant to then Programme Director Dr. Daleep Mukarji. He was later designated as Graduate Clerk during the integration of RUHSA with CMC in 1985. In 1987-88, he went on to do Diploma in Community Health Management in RUHSA and in 1989 Masters in Public Administration from Madras University after which he was offered Assistant Training Officer Position in 1990 leading up to his promotion to Sr. Selection Training officer in 2013. He has also procured a master’s degree in Psychology at a later date. His contributions to the department include many community outreach programmes and several NGO Project Evaluations in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa that he has coordinated. His skills as an excellent team leader and his rich experience and knowledge of subjects, was reflected in the success of all the workshops and events coordinated by him. His training programmes pertaining to management techniques were a rich source of information for all his students. His other achievements include Co-authoring in a book-let titled ‘Sexuality and Adolescence’. His wife, Mrs. Sujatha Asirvatham is a senior Pharmacist in RUHSA, They are blessed with two children, son, Thejus graduated from CMC as a bachelor of Occupational Therapy and is currently working in Qatar as OT consultant and daughter-in-law Thrupti is a post graduate from VIT, and daughter Thara after completing BSc in Nursing at CMC is currently pursuing a M.Sc. in Psychology at Christ College, Bangalore. As he retires, Mr. Mathew Asirvatham will be remembered for his commitment to the training of many students. His involvement in the daily operation of the RUHSA department will be sorely missed and may he receive all God’s blessings as he enters yet another phase of his life. Mr. C. Raghu, Hospital House Keeping Attendant Gr.I, Nephrology (AK Lab) retired on 5th June, 2017 after 30 years of dedicated service to the institution. His wife, Mrs. Marthamma is a Hospital House Keeping Attendant in Medical Genetics. He has two sons, Mr. Srinivasan who is working as Clerk Typist in Transport Department and a daughter Mrs. Geetha who is a Hospital House Keeping Attendant in M2 ward. Mr. F. Charles P. Daniel, Sr. Gr.II, Electrician, RUHSA (Rural Unit for Health and Social Affairs) retired on 10th June 2017 after 20 years of service to the institution. He has two sons and a daughter. Elder son, Mr. Dani Charles is working as Sales Representative in Service Ford, daughter Ms. Grace Fanny is doing 3rd year Optometry in S.I.H – R & LC., Karigiri and youngest son, Mr. Sami Charles has completed Hotel Management. CMC community thanks them for their years of service and commitment to the institution and wishes them a peaceful retirement.

Obituary Mr. Sathiyendran K., Electrician Gr.III, Mechanical Engineering Department, has departed to be with the Lord on 19th July, 2017. He joined CMC in 2011.
