In CORPORA 2017, more than 100 specimens including skeleton, bones, muscles, heart, nasal and oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lung, stomach, intestine, liver, pancreas, external and internal features of kidney, ureter, urinary bladder; male and female reproductive organs, brain, spinal cord, sense organs and endocrine
glands were displayed. Human embryos and fetuses at different stages of development were also displayed. The students also learnt about common health problems like infectious diseases, vitamin deficiencies and endocrine disorders. All specimens were tailor-made to be relevant to the school biology curriculum and all exhibits were annotated and labeled to facilitate self-study. In addition, staff were available at all times to provide explanation and to clarify doubts. General information on healthy diet, evils of smoking, immunization, perinatal care and organ donation were also provided in the form of attractive charts that the students viewed in the waiting area. A little over five thousand school students from 52 schools and 2 colleges benefited through this programme. Most of the students and teachers through their feedback

he Department of Anatomy, conducted an exhibition and teaching programme for school children called ‘CORPORA 2017’ from 3rd to 6th October, 2017. The Department of Anatomy has a large repository of formalin fixed specimens, plastinates, skeletons, bones and highly skilled faculty who have a strong commitment to teaching. The program was initiated with the aim to provide an educative experience for the school students in and around Vellore.
Dr. Ari George Chacko, Professor of Neurosurgery, is appointed as Head of Neurosurgery Unit-I with effect from 13 th October, 2017 on his return from sabbatical leave.

Inauguration of Suture Stores The dedication of the ‘The Pharmacy Suture Stores’ was held on 30th September, 2017 in the presence of the Director, Dr. J.V. Peter and the Medical Superintendent, Dr. K. Prasad Mathews. The departmental Chaplain Mr. Raja offered a prayer of dedication. The newly inaugurated facility is located at the basement of the Main Operation Theatre complex near the General Stores office. The Suture Stores will play a central role in coordinating storage and distribution of sutures to theatres and other areas of the hospital and peripheral campus.
Workshop on Laboratory Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistance The Regional workshop on “Laboratory Surveillance of Antimicrobial resistance” jointly organized by the World Health Organization South East Asia Regional Office (SEARO) and the Department of Clinical Microbiology was held from 9th to 12th October 2017. The workshop was inaugurated by the Director Dr. J.V. Peter in the presence of WHO/SEARO Regional Adviser, Dr. Aparna Shah. Professor V. Balaji, the Head of Clinical Microbiology and the Organizing Secretary, Dr. Aparna Shah released the laboratory manual on the detection of Antimicrobial Resistance. The Vice Principal, Dr. Biju George addressed the gathering reiterating the importance of surveillance data on regional antimicrobial resistance patterns. The workshop held didactic lectures, practical demonstrations, detailed hands-on training in the various methods of antimicrobial susceptibility testing and resistance detection. The workshop came to a fruitful end in formulating recommendations to the WHO in improving the detection and surveillance of antimicrobial resistance in South-East Asia, where the Department of Clinical Microbiology, CMC Vellore will serve as a centre for both technical and diagnostic support from India.
World Diabetes Day In commemoration of World Diabetes Day the Department of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, had organized a Cookery Competition on 7th October, 2017 at Darling residency Vellore in an effort to create awareness about the nutritional aspects of diabetes home management.
The judges for the event were Dr. Sanjay Kumar, Scientist, Centre for Stem Cell Research, CMC, Vellore, Mrs. Beaulah Premkumar, Professor and Head Medical Surgical Speciality-I Nursing, CMC Vellore and Mrs. Leepica Dahiya, Teacher in Spring Days School, Erayangadu, Vellore. The judges were very appreciative of the efforts put in by the participants and also stressed the importance of simple, healthy cooking. A total of 20 teams tested their culinary skills in cooking based on the topic “Breakfast for a pregnant women with diabetes”.

There are currently over 199 million women living with diabetes and this total is projected to increase to 313 million by 2040. Diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women globally, causing 2.1 million deaths each year. Diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy is called gestational diabetes. Diabetes diagnosed before pregnancy and conceived is called pre gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes occurs in about 7% of all the pregnancies. As a result of socio economic conditions girls and women with diabetes experience barriers in accessing cost effective diabetes prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment and care, particularly in developing countries, women with diabetes have more difficulty conceiving and may have poor pregnancy outcome. The first step in treating gestational diabetes is to modify the diet to keep the blood sugar level in the normal range, still eating a healthy diet. A diabetes diet is about having a healthy eating plan that including appropriate nutrients, low in fat and moderate in calories. It is a healthy diet for anyone. The only difference is that the carbohydrate intake should be kept under check .

The Consolation Prizes were given to S. Deepadevi and Sakthi from CMC, Mrs. Sundari Arumugan from Lions Club and Mrs. Meena Chaudhary from CMC.
