for Healthcare Christian Fellowship International (HCFI). HCFI, founded by Francis Grim in the first half of the 20th century, is an NGO that works to bring healthcare to those who are medically under-served, among the marginal groups of society. The service ended with the breaking of bread – the communion service – where the entire community affirmed its faith and prayed for the new leadership.
2 nd Annual Symposium on Cell and Gene Therapy The Centre for Stem Cell Research (CSCR), (a unit of inStem, Bengaluru) organized the 2ndAnnual Symposium on Cell and Gene Therapy on 7th and 8th September, 2017. This symposium brought together scientists, physicians and others who have played a role in developing this field in the country. The symposium was supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).Dr.VijayRaghavan, Secretary, DBT and Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Secretary, Department of Health Research (DHR) and Director General, ICMR addressed the participants through video link. The programme this year focused on cell and gene therapy in Haematological Disorders, Gene Editing Technology, Non-viral Gene Transfer Technology and Cancer Cell and Gene Therapy. Over 100 participants from across the country and 18 speakers from around the world took part in the symposium. Professor Arun Srivastava from the University of Florida College of Medicine, USA delivered the keynote address where he discussed the evolution of gene therapy in the world and delivered the keynote address titled ‘AAV: From Almost A Virus to An Awesome Vector’..The symposium was well received by all the participants who were all actively engaged in the discussions. CSCR plans to hold this meeting on an annual basis to help promote this area of research in India through cross-discipline dialogue and collaborations on a diverse range of inter-connected issues relevant to the field.
Low Vision and Community based rehabilitation centre opened in CMC There are a large number of patients with incurable visual impairment and blindness in our country. Ophthalmologists generally focus on curative services. Centres dedicated to low vision rehabilitation are few. Services for assessment and rehabilitation of such patients were started in the department of Ophthalmology, Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore in 2001.

However the numbers and needs of patients and availability of range of devices and technology have increased dramatically over the years. To respond to this need, the Department of Ophthalmology opened a ‘Centre for low vision rehabilitation’ in the ‘Shalom Family Medicine Centre’ premises on 8th September, 2017. A team of Ophthalmologists (Dr. Lekha Mary Abraham, Dr. Padma Paul and Dr. Deepa John) along with optometrists perform an assessment and advise devices and lifestyle modifications for activities of daily living. The new facility has been made with special features of access to aid in mobility training. In addition we hope to be able to counsel these patients Continued on Page 3

to accept the new challenge, work towards skills retraining and vocational rehabilitation as also work towards Community Based Rehabilitation. Dr. Andrew Braganza, the head of the department welcomed the gathering including representatives from the Blind Schools, the Programme director and Senior Programme Officer of the Christoffel Blinden Mission (which has been supporting ophthalmology and low vision services for decades). Dr. Sunil Chandy, the director of the institution commended the team and wished them success in bringing to fruition a vision beyond the physical sense of the word. After the prayer of dedication, he requested Ms. Rajeshwari, a visually challenged care taker cum teacher of the blind school, to inaugurate the facility. The mission of this endeavour is to walk alongside persons living with low vision and incurable blindness to take them all the way to their infinite potential.
Awareness Programme on Healthy Diet Department of Dietetics along with Lions Club Vellore organised an awareness programme on Healthy Diet to the 250 Nursing Students of St. Johns College of Nursing, Vellore on 14th September, 2017. Mrs. Manimegalai, Incharge of Dietetics delivered a talk on “Good Nutrition”. The objective of the programme was to sensitize the Nursing Students about the importance of eating healthy diet. Displays of balanced diet, nutritious recipies and various food groups were much appreciated by the students and faculty. Dietitians Mrs. Jayalakshmi, Mrs. Anitha were present during the occasion.

Obituary: Dr. Margaret Riddoch Dr. Margaret Riddoch on 20th September 2017 at the age of 89 in the United Kingdom. Dr. Margaret Riddoch was on the staff of the Department of Anaesthesia and has been described by those who knew her as a gentle person and as a friend to many staff and students of yesteryears. Dr Riddoch had cardiac failure for a few years and her health had been deteriorating over the last three months. As one of the alumni put it, Dr. Margaret lived a very simple life, staying in the Women’s hostel, and eating the food there instead of staying in the Big Bungalow. After her return to the UK, her home there was also a modest abode. She continued to help a lot of people in her own quite way and kept in touch with staff and students of CMC. We thank God for the contribution of Dr. Margaret Riddoch and for the way she touched the hearts of our staff and students.
