Hail the Heaven Born Prince of Peace! And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!” - Luke 2: 13, 14
Christmas greetings in the Name of the heaven born Prince of peace, Jesus Christ!
The Hebrew word for peace is Shalom, which is widely understood as peace of God that would be experienced at the personal, communal and national level, in the midst of every possible life struggle. The apostle Paul calls this the "peace that surpasses all understanding"
(Philippians 4:7) – God’s supernatural peace surpasses natural understanding. The word Shalom also means unity and accord; it can therefore be achieved through a cordial relationship with God and also with His every creation. No one can live in isolation. The more we compartmentalise our lives, the more we distort God-intended peace. But, when we live in unity in spite of our differences, with the spirit of acceptance, Shalom pervades our day-to-day living. Another thing that often stands between us and Shalom is fear. We fear sickness, uncertainty, a broken relationship, financial constraint and such, which keep us from reaching God-given peace. Virgin Mary feared when she heard an angel saying she would bear a son in her womb through the Holy Spirit. Joseph was frightened when he heard about his fiancée being with child.
The shepherds were terrified when they saw the angel…but, the birth of Christ brought joy and peace in their lives, because they identified themselves with the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ. Herod was also disturbed, but in a different sense, when he heard about the birth of Jesus, because he had separated his life from the source of eternal peace. Jesus said, “I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!” (John 16: 33). May the heaven-born Prince of Peace enable us to experience His absolute peace, Shalom, in our lives. Wishing you a joyful Christmas and a fruitful New Year, Rev. ow can we have peace when we are surrounded by gloomy situations in every realm of our daily living – sickness, war, natural calamities and economic crisis? Is peace utopian? For many, peace seems to be an unattainable desire. However, dear friends, such dismal circumstances can no longer deny us the Christmas hope for peace and good will toward all humanity. During the birth of Christ, people experienced peace-less situations because of spiritual bankruptcy, moral deformity, political oppression as well as social marginalisation. Yet, God restored peace which He promised, by sending His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who would be called 'The Prince of Peace'.

Short Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine for Doctors The Department of Infectious Diseases, in collaboration with the departments of Wellcome Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, hosted the Tenth International Short Course in Clinical Tropical Medicine from 21st November to 3rd December, 2016, at IDTRC. Twenty five students including 15 from outside the country attended the two-weeklong course which offered lectures, clinical bedside sessions and laboratory practicals in bacteriology, virology, parasitology and mycology. Expertise was offered by international faculty from the University of Oxford, UK, University of Liverpool, UK, McGill University, Canada, Haukeland University and Center of Geographic Medicine & Tropical Diseases, Norway, Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, University of OTAGO, New Zealand and NIMHANS, Bangalore. Faculty from the departments of Wellcome Microbiology, Clinical Microbiology, Virology, Child Health III, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Dermatology, SLRTC Karigiri, CHAD and Infectious Diseases contributed actively to the learning process. This course was initiated in 2007 and has so far trained 90 Indian and 172 international students in the different aspects of Tropical Medicine. A Travel Medicine Workshop was also organised on 26th November, 2016 for nurses and physicians. Travel Medicine, which is just emerging in India, is a specialty dedicated to assessing risk for travelers and offering counsel to them with regard to prevention of illnesses and injury. Data is now available in geo-sentinel and other travel networks with regard to returning travelers. With increasingly cheap travel options being available and people becoming more adventurous, this is a specialty with increasing relevance and importance.
Hospital Day 2016 - Valedictory Ceremony The Valedictory function of Hospital Day 2016 was held on Dec 14 in the Norman Auditorium. Dr.C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent welcomed the gathering and said that he enjoyed visiting all the stalls. Dr. Sunil Chandy, Director thanked each department who put up stalls for their enthusiasm, dedication and innovation. Mrs.Jasmine Anand, Mr.Sadhu, Dr.Ivan James and Mr.Joshua gave feedback on their experiences during the Hospital Day and highlighted on the joy of working together. Students from various schools visited the stalls and asked several questions pertaining to health and illness. The cultural programmes organized on December 2nd and 3rd evenings were well appreciated by the local public & staff. Drs. Anil Kuruvilla, C.E. Eapen, Premila Lee and Mr. Ebenezer Sundarraj who were the judges for the event were specially thanked. Speaking on behalf of the judges, Dr. Anil Kuruvilla said that all departments had put in a lot of effort to organize the stalls that were interesting and educative. Our gratitude to the nurses, doctors & support staff for organizing the Hospital Day stalls despite the short time and bad weather. Congratulations! • Dr. Gagandeep Kang, Professor, Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory, Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences was awarded the Infosys Prize in life sciences for the year 2016, for her pioneering contributions to understanding the natural history of rotavirus and other infectious diseases that are important both globally and in India.
• Dr. D.J. Christopher, Professor and Head of Pulmonary Medicine, was nominated as member of the India TB consortium, under the aegis of ICMR, by the Director General of Health Services.
• Dr. Edwin Stephen, Professor and Head, Vascular Surgery, was awarded the FRCS Degree by the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow.
• At the National Conference of Indian Rheumatology Association 2016, held in Kerala from 24th to 27th November,2016: Dr. Ruchika Goel, Associate Professor, Department of Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology, was honoured with the Zydus Oration.
