RUHSA organised a workshop between May 5 and 7 , 2016, in the department as part of a mission to train Primary Health Care providers from different health care settings to take initiative in preventive Cervical and Oral Cancer project using the 'Educate, Screen and Treat' approach. This mission is supported by Global Innovation Initiative, in partnership with the University of Edinburgh and Cornell University, US, Medic Mobile, India, and Distance Education Unit, CMC. This workshop was preceded by a similar one in March this year, organised at Padhar Mission Hospital, M.P, and is to be followed by a third workshop which will be conducted in July at Christian Mission Hospital, Mungeli, Chattisgarh. Obituaries: Mr. Christudas Peter, father of Dr. Dincy Peter, Professor & Acting Head of Dermatology Unit-II, and father-in-law of Dr. Vinu Moses, Professor of Radiology, on 6th May, 2016. Mr. T. Rheumatology Co-ordinates CME on Lupus The Department of Rheumatology conducted a CME titled 'Lupus Revolution 2016', an initiative in keeping with World Lupus Day, organised by World Lupus Federation (a coalition of lupus patient organisations the world over) and observed internationally on May 10th. This event was put together in a bid to call attention to the need for improvement in patient healthcare services and recent research to explain the etiology and treatment for lupus globally. It was an effort to bring together various medical specialties involved in treating lupus and to generate an exchange of views to improve early diagnosis of the disease. The event was inaugurated by Dr. C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent, who himself being a gastroenterologist, shared multi-disciplinary approaches in taking care of lupus patients since it involves practically every organ system. The recent prominent global research involved in identifying improved therapeutic modalities of lupus were also discussed during this time. It was observed that the genes involved in the etiopathogenesis of lupus in patients from the Asian subcontinent were different from those in Caucasian or African populations. Following this, Dr.Vinoi George David, Professor, Nephrology, spelt out the challenges involved in the diagnosis and treatment of renal involvement in lupus. Recent changes in the diagnosis of lupus nephritis and the role of kidney biopsy (including repeat biopsy) for planning therapy were also deliberated over. Dr. Suresh Babu, Assistant Professor, Neurology, then went on to discuss the varied situations in which lupus can manifest itself and the importance of lower threshold for suspicion of lupus. He laid emphasis on the early institution of therapy as it significantly reduces mortality and morbidity in lupus patients. Unlike Rheumatoid Arthritis, the concept of “treat to target” is new in lupus, and the subsequent talk laid out how, when and why to modify therapy in lupus. It also discussed the various recent therapeutic agents in the pipeline for the treatment of lupus. The paediatric point of view was also represented, as Dr. Sathish.T, Professor, Child Health II, brought up the fact that lupus in children is more severe and difficult to treat, which furthers the cause for early suspicion and diagnosis of lupus. To conclude the event thematically, a quiz was conducted on lupus, which sought to trace the global journey in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. With physicians from the departments of Medicine, Paediatrics, Neurology, Nephrology, Haematology and Dermatology in attendance, the event appropriately acknowledged a chronic, potentially fatal autoimmune disease which affects more than 5 million people worldwide of all ages, races and ethnicities.
Mr. Kirubakaran Retires Mr. Kirubakaran, Audit Officer, Internal Audit Department, retires on May 11th, 2016 after 35 years of service in CMC. He joined the RUHSA Department in 1981 and moved to the Internal Audit Department in 1985. He was actively involved in the audit of various departments including Pharmacy Stores, the Department of Cardiology, audit of Staff Budget and Salary section. His wife, (late) Mrs. Chandrika Kirubakaran worked as a Sr. Secretary to the Nursing Superintendent. His elder son, Mr. K. Gideon David, works as a Staff Nurse in Accident & Emergency Services; Mr. David's wife, Mrs. Priya Gideon, works as a Staff Nurse in Neuro ICU. His younger son, Mr. K. Samson David, works as a Staff Nurse in Dubai. The CMC community bids farewell to him, thankful for his many years of sincere service to the institution and wishes him a blessed life ahead.

Occupational Health Education Series - Segment III The ongoing Watch Your Back Series, initiated by the Occupational Health Team reaches its third module this week, featuring exercises to alleviate back pain.
Basic Life Support Training Programme Invites Enrolment The Department of Hospital Management Studies & Staff Training & Development, along with the Medical Superintendent’s Office, has been conducting 'Basic Life Support (BLS)' training programme since February 2011, with the help of physicians from ICU as Principal Assessors for Doctors and Technical Staff who are involved in direct patient care. This BLS certification is valid for a period of 2 years. Programmes such as this are conducted to create a patient-safe environment at CMC by addressing life threatening conditions immediately. Instructors have been identified, trained and certified as 'BLS Instructors' and as 'BLS Instructor Aids' by the Principal Assessors, for optimal utilisation of faculty. 11 batches of BLS training programmes for 216 doctors and technical staff have been conducted thus far. The next BLS training programme is scheduled to commence on June 1st, 2016. The yearly BLS training calendar is also uploaded on the Enterprise Management (ELM) software.
